I received an ARC copy of Reign of Silver & Stardust, and unfortunately, this one just wasn’t for me.
First, I feel like I need to start with the giant space elephant in the room: this is sci-fi. Or at the very least, it’s a pretty heavy sci-fi/fantasy mashup. I went into this expecting romantasy based on the description and was very surprised when it started giving me YA The 100 vibes instead. Sci-fi is one of the few genres I genuinely do not enjoy, so I fully admit that probably influenced my experience with this book. Maybe it’s categorized or described more clearly elsewhere, but the Amazon description definitely did not prepare me for what I was getting into.
Beyond the genre surprise, I struggled with the world-building. I constantly felt like I’d been dropped into the middle of an already established series—or maybe accidentally started a spinoff without reading the original. Information would be introduced without enough context for me to really understand it, while other things would be explained and then basically repeated half a page later. The mythology and history of the “world” also felt somewhat stilted and unclear, which left me with a lot of questions that kept distracting me from the actual story.
I also had a hard time with our MFC. She’s 23, but she comes across as incredibly naive, especially considering she’s apparently spent most of her life being despised simply for existing. I would expect someone who grew up under those circumstances to be a little more cautious and aware of the people around her. And then there are the prophetic dreams about our MMC, which mostly left me going, “Wait…what?” I’m assuming there’s more explanation coming, but within this book they just added another layer of confusion for me.
As for Valorek…I actually like him. His name? Not so much. 😂 Why does this man seem to be the only person in the entire book with a full-blown alien name? But I digress.
Valorek is likable, but he’s also weirdly naive and makes some dumb choices. This man meets our MFC, knows she’s supposed to be the enemy, and approximately 30 seconds later is basically like, “Sure, I’ll help you.” Sir??? Maybe take a minute? Ask a follow-up question?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m rooting for these two. But I’m also rooting for them while acknowledging that they are both kind of idiots.
A whole bunch of other stuff happens, obviously, and several more questionable decisions are made before we reach the end.
I hate leaving negative reviews, and this is one where I think my rating is especially subjective because I probably never would have picked it up if I’d realized how heavily it leaned into sci-fi. I don’t think Reign of Silver & Stardust is necessarily a bad book, it just really wasn’t the book for me. I do think the sci-fi elements should be made much clearer in the description so readers know what they’re getting into.
If you enjoy sci-fi/fantasy blends and stories with The 100, Dune, or The Expanse kind of vibes, you may have a completely different experience with this one. Unfortunately, for someone who thought she was walking into a romantasy and instead unexpectedly found herself in space…I was not the target audience.

Catalina, a mortal, is on a spaceship, living a life of a second-class citizen because of her family history. She begs her sister, an immortal and an officer of the Queen's Elite Cadre, to take her for an illegal visit to the Old Planet. There she meets a man she had seen in her dreams, but then the visit goes awfully wrong.
The world building is quite elaborate and detailed, there is plenty of action, the narrative moves between places, and there is a strong sense of space and time. Space travel takes the appropriate amount of time, it's tedious and difficult and expensive and hard to arrange, and similarly there is realistic world building on the planets, where there are additional rules. There are lots of plot lines, and many characters who are connected in interesting ways. There is some character development -- the plot line with Eli in particular is both a little unexpected and well-done, and an interesting deviation for the "standard" of the genre. There is one conversation toward the end about jealousy and immortality which I thought was very insightful. So in other words, there is a solid foundation for something strong.
What did not click: continuity, informational and emotional. An example plot line that just didn't make much sense to me is the one between Valorek and James. Valorek starts off despising James, yet blindly follows his insane plan -- that James refuses to elaborate on or explain anything about. And as they proceed with great sacrifices along this insane plan, new questions just arise and arise and remain unanswered, and Valorek's lack of curiosity about (for example) whether what they are doing is saving or kidnapping defies imagination and undermines any character building.
Plot tension is heavily dependent on people withholding key information from each other well past reason -- the romantic leads worst of all. Even when the secrets are small, everything must be dragged out, and when the secrets are bigger, the stakes of what is withheld are not clear. This is one of my least favorite plot devices, and I just don't find lying romantic, so that undermines a lot for me.
Minor quibble: the prophetic dreams. They mash magic into the sci-fi frame without need, and they undercut the first real meeting -- destiny arriving ahead of the person.
Promising setup, uneven follow-through. Three stars.

Spice: 2/5 I had high hopes and felt like I was only given 5 minutes. 😭 There was a lot left to be desired here.
Pace: 3/5 mediocre it was on the slower side as far as the story developing. There was times I was sitting with anticipation like something big was going to happen, but then nothing really major occurred.
Readability: 3/5 good technical writing, easy to understand, but the content was a little lacking for me.
Character development: 3/5 other than the protagonist I didn’t feel really connected to any of them. I didn’t really feel like I had a good picture of any of them. I did enjoy the heroin and her love for her sister. Valorek was there he seemed like a good guy but it felt like there was so much more to uncover there. It is a trilogy so perhaps it’s coming in a later book.

My thoughts: This was one of very few sci-fi fantasy romance books I’ve read. I thought it was ok.
Jealous unwanted sister seeks sisters killer and blames herself for her death. Trains to impersonate her, but meets a boy. I thought some of it was cool like the different places and the concept of immortality. i just didn’t feel invested in the plot or the romance to keep me interested. The romance took almost half way through the book to even be a thing. No angst. I have zero interest in finding out what happens in the future books. I’m sure there are people who will eat this up. Definitely worth a try for yourself.
It felt like a mix between Star Trek, star wars and the 100, with maybe a touch of vampire diaries. The characters seemed slightly immature for my taste. Take out the 2 seconds of smut and this could easily be a YA. The stuff with the sisters friend I was waiting for some tea to come out there. Again maybe it’s in the next 2. Idk 🤷🏼♀️ I think it could have used more emotional engagement especially with the sister. I could’ve used at least 3 solid smut scenes. I like to FEEL the energy and the angst.
Do not go in hoping for smut city.
Definitely try for yourself. You are sure to enjoy the heroin

I actually started writing Catalina and Valorek’s story over a decade ago. Back then, it was rejected by traditional agents. When I tried to release it on my own as short serials (don’t judge, ha!), it flopped. The truth? At the time, I didn't have the writing skillset or the experience to do this massive, intricate world justice. So, I put it away, but these characters never truly left me.
Over the last several years, you’ve known me for writing dark, emotional contemporary romance (like King of Beasts, Entangle You, Empire of Ache & Ruin). Writing those books taught me how to craft deep tension, high stakes, and complex characters. And all the while, Catalina and Valorek were waiting in the wings.

Okay, this was definitely a different one for me! 🚀✨ This was my first sci-fi/romantasy mashup, and honestly, I think the storyline had A LOT of potential.
Catalina and her sister are sent on what I’m just going to call a spaceship 😂 to check on the mortals living on the “old planet.” Things obviously go sideways, a fight breaks out, and Catalina has to hide because—plot twist—she’s mortal too. While hiding, she runs into Valorek, a man she instantly recognizes because he’s been showing up in her dreams. 👀
Then things get even more chaotic when Catalina’s twin sister is killed, and Catalina decides to take her place. Meanwhile, Valorek’s sister is sick, and the only cure is on another planet, so Valorek and his family sneak onto the spaceship to go find it.
Now add secret identities, space travel, romance, dreams, and a whole lot of drama… and you’ve got yourself a book. 😂
My biggest issue was the romance. Catalina and Valorek fall for each other FAST, and it was just a little too cheesy for me. 🧀❤️ I also felt like the plot started losing steam as the story went on, which was disappointing because I really think this book had the potential to be SO good.
That being said, I’m not ready to give up on this series yet. There’s definitely enough here to keep me curious, so I’ll probably give book 2 a shot and see where this story goes. 🚀📚
Final verdict: Interesting concept, questionable cheese levels, and enough potential to make me keep reading. 😂

I really wanted to like this one because the premise had a lot of potential, and there were definitely parts of the world that I found interesting. Once things started getting explained, I could see what the author was going for.

Reign of Silver and Stardust is a interesting take on a virus causing immortality and destruction of the world.
For those lucky enough to become Immortal, they are elevated in status and look down upon those without immortality. Catalina is one of those people who was unlucky enough to not be granted immortality while her twin sister, Ry, was.
Watching Ry have a completely different world of her own, made her want to do something reckless. She wanted to she the Old Planet at least once. Ry eventually agreed.

Poor Catalina spent her entire life in the shadow of her sister. Families were only allowed one child, and she was the younger sister. The bond that these two have, though, showed that Ry never thought of Catalina as a spare or unwanted. They shared a bond that any twin sisters could have. I loved the way these two girls are always looking out for each other. Catalina just wanted to keep up with her sister, even though Ry was immortal and she was not. When Ry is killed, Catalina makes it her mission to avenge her death. Though becoming Ry, Catalina learns so much about her sister that she didn't know. It makes you feel even more sad for Catalina, as she felt so close to her sister, but they weren't as close to each other as maybe they were..
During different times, including in Catalina's dreams, she meets up with Valorek, who is also on the hunt to help his own sister. Fate brought them together to help each other on their journey. I just finished reading Reign of Silver and Stardust and I really enjoyed it! It had the perfect mix of story building/world building, while also having an engaging story line! I enjoyed the fact that this wasn’t another Fae realm, or another pre technology world (after so many books that all have similar worlds, they tend to blend together). This one stands out with space travel, and traveling between planets. Loved the characters (definitely love Valorek and Catalina’s energy) I do wish there was a glossary in the beginning that gives little snap shots of how to pronounce things, as well as giving quick explanations or definitions to some of the things that are in this world. There was a few times that I had to go back and try to find the answers or re read a section to understand what was happening. So pay attention, and some of it makes more sense later on in the book. I do wish the book continued more before ending the way it did, but now I’ll have to impatiently wait for the next book to come out! ;) Excited to see what happens next!

Science fantasy isn't a genre I typically reach for, but the premise immediately caught my attention. The mystery was easily my favorite part of the book. Every time I thought I had something figured out, another twist or reveal kept me turning the pages. I also really enjoyed the political intrigue, hidden identities, and the way the plot gradually unfolded.

After reading the general summary of the book from the author, I was really excited to read this book. I know when signing up for the ARC read it was stated that this book was a dark romantacy with enemies to lovers. I feel as if this is more of a sci-fi romantacy. When I think enemies to lovers, I think of the characters hating each other at first sight; while these didn't. The characters had an instant connection. For a book to be dark, I think of it as a lot of death or a lot of darker themes. Most of the themes in the book didn't seem dark.

Like what's with the physical spark with Catalina and Valorek? I assume a fated mate situation but nothing about that type of love is mentioned anywhere in this book but it's obvious that it's more than a lusty instant love thing. But they have each other for now and it better stay that way.
Why did dr. Darius leave there is way more to this story than his son is immune.
I want to learn about this immortal killing virus.
Side characters have small.plot stories I need to finish.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it to be fast paced, have an interesting dystopian-esk premise, and enjoyable characters. I was left with questions along the way that would typically be answered later in the book, but sometimes left me confused.
On that vein, I felt a bit more background or world building may have been nice towards the beginning of the book as I had a difficult time grasping what had happened to set the scene for this society. These questions were mostly answered later in the book (and maybe that was on purpose) but it would’ve made my reading experience more enjoyable.
I enjoyed the characters and found their depth and dynamics interesting. I definitely will be reading the second book to see what happens.

I really enjoyed this book! The world building was moderately complex but easy to understand. I was surprised by the space setting and didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I feel like there is a lot of set up for a really good story here, but there are a few things I would like to see as it continues. I would be interested to know more about James and his story, because I have a bad feeling about him and what will come. I also wish Valorek hadn’t so easily followed his dad’s plans, just because he seemed to dislike him towards the start of the book. Also, where the heck is Wela?! Finally, I am still confused and caught up on why Catalina was having dreams about Valorek before they met. I would love to get more about that, in some sort of star crossed lovers type of story line or whatever else Diana Hicks comes up with. I really feel like this has set up a great story and I can’t wait to read more!

It was a solid story, but it definitely leaned more towards a straight sci-fi than something mixed with romance, which wasn’t quite what I was expecting with the way it was advertised. At the start, I was so confused as to if Catalina was a female or not because as a soldier, people refer to anyone as "sir". It just threw me off. Once I figured that out, I could focus on Catalina's relationships and journey; especially with her twin sister, Ry.
I enjoyed getting in depth, several chapters of what led up to Ry's death and the other characters surrounding that detail.
I do have to admit that Eli's relationship with Catalina got kinda weird for me because he went from hating her to suddenly almost being in love with her..... but I get she resembled her twin.
Wasn't a super fan of the insta love between Catalina and Valorek, but they grew on me and they're pretty cute together! Their meeting was pretty interesting.....

I especially loved Catalina's character and the emotional journey she enraptures in Reign of Silver and Stardust. I am very excited to see where the story continues in book 2.
Ry's character was also very interesting to me and I wish we got to see more of her romantic relationship in this book but maybe that could be a future novella (One I would totally read!). That being said the relationship between Catalina and Valorek was the star of the book! I am so excited to see more of their story. <3

The FMC Catalina she goes through struggles with accepting who she is. Her sister is immortal, but she isn't. She deals with some hardships along the way. She has a mystery to solve and the green eyed MMC Valorek who she has to figure out what he means to her.
the MMC Valorek he deals with trying to help his sister. He deals with what he feels is betrayal. Having to stow away to save his sister. Along the way, he learns that not everything he knew was the truth. Now he has to deal with what Catalina means to him and figure out what's happening between them.

This is a great love story. Two different planets when humans become two different people, one has abilities and one is a normal human. There’s a connection between mmc and fmc almost like it’s fate. The family aspect is complicated and friends that will do anything to help.
What is life like when only one child is allowed? If you grew up being the “spare”, how would that affect you?
The author tells a good story where you can imagine the world/worlds the characters live in and you end up rooting for the underdog. Even though it has twist and turns, I believe this is a relaxing read and not jam packed with action. There is action in it, but it improves the story not overwhelms it. It reads like a movie and I cannot wait for the second.

The author tells a good story where you can imagine the world/worlds the characters live in and you end up rooting for the underdog. I enjoyed this book overall, but it didn’t completely work for me. The story kept my attention, and I was interested enough to finish it, but I felt like it was missing some depth. A lot of the characters and plot points had potential, but nothing was really explored enough for me to get fully invested.
It also felt a little all over the place at times. The pacing was uneven, and some parts felt disconnected from the rest of the story. I kept waiting for everything to come together in a bigger way, but it never quite got there.
That said, I did enjoy it, and I’m excited to read the second one. I’m hoping it has a little more depth and gives some of the characters and storylines more room to develop. Definitely good, just not quite great for me.

While the plot was intriguing, the delivery fell flat. There were times when it seemed like whole paragraphs were missing. Several times I was confused about what was going on because of this. The whole story could have been told in half the time.
The relationships & characters are weird & dont flow concisely. Because of this they dont feel real & it was hard to connect with anyone.
There wasn't much detail in some instances to paint a full picture of the scene, other times there was unnecessary information. Lots of repeated information throughout.
I almost didnt finish this book. However, I think the plot is worth pursuing & want to see the author grow so I will give the 2nd book a chance when it comes out.

I had a great time reading this story. The book gave me a dystopian/ sci-fi vibe, which I love. The book had depth and the world building was explained in detailed where I felt like I was the one in the story. There’s magic system, traveling between worlds, and so much mystery. It absolutely has it all. The FMC experiences trauma growing up and throughout her life as the unwanted one. But what is more important finding revenge or her potential love interest? I feel like I’m not too sure which side is the good side and who exactly is the bad guy which rarely happens. The ending ends on. Cliffhanger that leaves you wanting to know what happens next. Definitely looking forward to book 2!

This was so unexpected for a Diana book. From the very beginning, it was completely up my street.
The story was tense, emotional, and full of intrigue. What really stood out was the side quest Catalina becomes part of, completely unaware of what's really happening around her. That subplot added such a tangible sense of suspense, and I found myself desperate to uncover the truth alongside her.
There are so many secrets still waiting to be revealed, and it feels like this is only the beginning. Who will Catalina end up with? What else has been hidden from her, and from us as readers?
I'm already eager to see where Diana takes this story next.

it was a definite mid read for me. I was not expecting it to be a space themed with different planets and worlds right out of the gate - I thought it was more fantasy like with kingdoms and stuff.
Around 20% I was waiting for things to start moving, but the world build was making it hard for me to understand what was happening.
I felt like I was throw into the middle of the world and I trying to piece together things to figure out what the FMC was talking about.
The MMC definitely fell first & hard, I did enjoy the romance and tension between them but the premise to me was eh, and I didn’t feel satisfied with the ending.
