I would say that this is the most succinct, restrained, mature and probably most enjoyable of the three autobiographies I’ve read from members of The Smiths. This is told with a great deal of warmth, sincerity and relatability and Joyce is just so easy to like. He really comes across as a remarkably affable guy with real sense of self-awareness, never losing perspective or whining about how hard done by he may have felt about the things that didn’t turn out the way he would have liked – instead brimming with sheer gratitude for all the great stuff he got to experience in those highly successful years.
