Robert Thorogood is an English screenwriter. He is best known as the creator of the BBC 1 Murder Mystery Series, Death in Paradise.

Robert was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland and read History at Downing College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he toured with the university's student comedy troupe Footlights in 1993 and was elected President in 1994. Soon after leaving Cambridge, Robert set up a theatre company that toured small theatres and schools, the highlight of which was a production of Molière's The Miser that he directed and acted in alongside Robert Webb, David Mitchell and Olivia Colman.

Robert wrote for many years - selling scripts to the BBC, ITV and independent film companies - but before 2011 the only script of his that was actually broadcast was a Radio 4 afternoon play called From Abstraction about the life of Paul Wolfskehl.

In 2008, Robert entered the inaugural Red Planet Prize and was a chosen finalist, where he was able to pitch his 'Copper in the Caribbean' idea to Tony Jordan. By 2011, when the show was finally broadcast - making it Robert's first TV broadcast credit at the age of 39 - Robert had become something of a poster boy for 'never giving up on the dream'.

In January 2014, it was announced that Robert had signed a deal with MIRA Harlequin to write three Richard Poole Murder Mystery novels, with the first being published in hardback in January 2015.

When Judith’s Greek husband, Philippos Demetriou, drowned off Corfu 49 years ago, the police looked very closely at Philippos’ English wife, despised by the Demetriou family. But the case was deemed an accident resulting from a stubborn man misjudging his own abilities and going sailing in a storm.

Those who’ve been along since the series’ debut, The Marlow Murder Club, know quite a bit about that accident. And while longtime fans will love being reunited with Judith, Suzie Harris and Becks Starling, The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts works beautifully as a standalone, as well.

In addition, two D-list celebrities, a footballer (soccer player for the Yanks) and a Mickey Spillane-type mystery writer, are shot to death, and, naturally, Judith, Suzie and Becks investigate. The threesome can’t get their usual support from the Maidenhead Police Station’s Detective Inspector Tanika Malik, who’s been sidelined, but Judith, as usual, finds a way around that. But not even knowing how clever Judith Potts is prepared me for the shocking ending! Such a great addition to a fabulous series.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press in exchange for an honest review.

When Gary Best, local footballing legend, is found dead the Marlow Murder Club want to be on the case but before they can get to the bottom of this death, another local celebrity is killed. The gang should be on the case but with their police contact, Tanika, suspended from duty and Judith hiding some dark secret, will they get to the truth before another famous Marlow resident is targeted?

This is the first of the series that I've read and while I found the plot and relationships easy to follow, it didn't particularly resonate with me. The plot felt quite forced at times and a lot of the dialogue was extremely clunky.

I'd watched a couple of the adaptations and enjoyed the cosy feel but the book simply wasn't for me. I didn't particularly warm to any of the characters - they all felt like caricatures. Its a shame, because the adaptation was really quite enjoyable.

However, since I'm coming at this without having read previous books I think it's only fair to try an earlier book in the series to get more perspective.

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts is certainly a cosy crime novel and I should imagine that if you are a fan, then you will enjoy this latest episode. I'll go and try a few of the previous novels.

Thankyou to Netgalley and HQ for the advance review copy.

It was lovely returning to these feisty women. Their relationship with each other is so entertaining and the way they solve murders and work with the police is funny at times. They get their man eventually but, I love the way they manipulate people to get information. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

Full review on my blog: https://www.pagetostagereviews.com/20...

The last Marlow Murder Club book ended on the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers, and we dive straight back into the action in The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts. Our puzzle-whizz protagonist Judith is the key suspect in a murder this time around, bringing the action much closer to home than the characters are comfortable with.

And, despite this new development understandably taking up a lot of Judith's time in this book, there's also a brand-new case to solve alongside it as another prominent Marlow resident bites the dust. However, her friends Becks and Suzie have to do more of the heavy lifting this time around as their inside woman in the police, Tameka, is also out of action. This change in direction gives Judith's friends more agency and depth, shaping them as individuals instead of as an extension of Judith.

While Judith will forever remain my favourite of the friendship group, it's great to see Becks and Suzie's personalities shine through as they take over the sleuthing reigns. Becks in particular is a force to be reckoned with and I'm glad she's finally breaking free from her label as "the vicar's wife" as she is a kick-ass investigator in her own right with great ideas and unafraid to put them into action. After four books (and two series on TV) this development was much-needed and so appreciated! I also absolutely adored that they've been pulled brought into Judith's puzzling world and I'm excited about future puzzles and wordplays in the books already.

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts will immensely satisfy fans of the Marlow Murder Club series as, aside from centring on another strong, local whodunnit story, it really moves our characters forward. We get to learn so much more about Judith's past (the good and the bad) alongside seeing Becks and Suzie shine. The only main character that was sidelined more in this book was Tameka, but it served the plot and I have a feeling we'll get to see a lot more of her again in the next book.

One of the things I love so much about Robert Thorogood's writing is that it's both gripping and fast-paced; he doesn't waffle on with unnecessary plot points or background information but gets straight to the point (save the occasional red herring, of course, to keep everyone on their toes). This is the perfect formula for readers to don their own investigative hats as they follow along on the adventures with Becks, Suzie, and Judith. And makes the inevitable conclusion – whatever it may be – immensely satisfying as you feel a part of the action. It's a very clever strategy and one that has me hooked on the Marlow Murder Club for however long Thorogood will release new stories!

'The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts' is another great addition to the Marlow Murder Club series (and potentially the series closer). As always with this series it has a clever mystery, humour, emotion and our ever present loveable core cast of characters. I really enjoyed central mystery in this one but there was also added intrigue with us finally being promised the backstory about Judith and what happened to her husband all those years ago.

As always there are plenty of twists and red herrings and a reveal that I genuinely didn't see coming. I'm glad we've also had a resolution to the story around Judith's past that has been hinted at in all the previous books and if this is the series closer it gives us a great sense of finality in that respect. The friendships at the heart of this book add warmth and heart and whilst Judith's side quest took away from that a little we were well rewarded in the end and it was great to see Becks and Suzie get more time to shine.

While it took a little time to fully settle into the rhythm of the story, once it did it was hugely enjoyable and yet again gave me a fun and satisfying read that delivers exactly what I look for in this series. If this is the end I'll be sad to say goodbye but from start to finish this series has been an absolute delight.

Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for inviting me to review a digital review copy of "The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts" in exchange for my honest and voluntary review.

My favourite cosy crime series is back with its fifth entry! Anyone who has been following the series will know there’s been an ongoing background storyline surrounding the ambiguity of the fate of Judith’s late husband. The previous book, Murder on the Marlow Belle, concluded with Judith receiving a visitor who would raise more questions about this…

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts takes place a day after the events of Murder on the Marlow Belle. As well as the visitor at Judith’s door, our unlikely trio, consisting of the puzzle setter and her dog walker and vicar’s wife friends, have more murders to solve!

The celebrities of Marlow are dropping like flies, so it’s down to Judith, Suzie and Becks to investigate and expose who’s behind the deaths. With ringleader Judith preoccupied with her personal predicament, it’s great to see Suzie and Becks take charge and come into their own with all the sleuthing skills they have learnt over the years. I love how their friendship is written.

As mentioned, this is part of a series and due to the particular storyline and the way it follows on timeline-wise from the last book, I really do think it’s worth investing the time to get up to speed. It’s cosy in the sense of the characters and the fact that the murders are not dark, but the series isn’t twee. The puzzles and mysteries are fun and well written. Plus if you’re a fan of the TV series Death in Paradise then you will be pleased to know it’s the same writer!

Thank you to Rachel Quin and HQ Stories for the proof.

Another successful book in the cozy crime series featuring the Marlow Detective Agency. I very much enjoyed this outing for the ladies, which sees them acting mainly without their police force friend Tamika, who has been suspended and replaced by another officer.

The replacement, Brendan, very much disapproves of the ladies being involved in police business and when two deaths occur of famous Marlow residents he warns them to stay away. In addition to this storyline, a woman appears from Judith’s past to uncover some secrets that have previously been hinted at involving the death of her husband many years ago.

The storyline is fun, witty, full of crossword puzzle elements and features some characters who have become like friends. I particularly enjoyed this book and the view into Judith’s history which gives her character more depth and understanding.

I would highly recommend reading this book and the others in the series for a great cozy crime thriller.

This book, as always in this series, did what it says on the tin. A little intrigue in a bucolic setting, female friendships, a rogues gallery of characters, some surprises (but nothing too jarring - of course). Love me a cosy crime and this series is one of my top choices of the genre. Didn’t 100% love the very end (no spoilers..) and think the reactions around it could’ve been developed further. Still a solid cosy crime read. Thanks for the ARC!

The three amateur sleuths are back at it but this time around Suzie and Becks have to step up, ‘cause Judith is distracted and even Tanika has been sidelined. Amusing and quirky as always, with fun and puzzling murders and blackmail, and more questions than answers.

A great multitude of suspects pop up, each one looking more and more guilty, and nothing to go on but their word. Who’s lying and are they little lies or big lies? But someone who is definitely under scrutiny is Judith, ‘cause her friends know she’s keeping secrets… and we’re all finally going to get the truth at the end.

I enjoyed the drama throughout, how it all connects eventually. But if I had one big criticism, it’s that the explanation is too large. The denouement, laying out all the answers, was so long and wordy that it started to feel very unrealistic and take me out of the story.

Still, this series is always a fun and easy adventure. I love the characters and am always eager to return to Marlow.

Fun. It's not as good as the first or fourth book in this series but fun nonetheless. I loved the extra insight we were given to Judith in this book and wanted more. A prequel spin-off of young Judith in Greece by any chance??

Would I recommend this novel? Yes, for fans of the series, it is a must. In places, it feels just a little too lightweight, but it's a good read

This book finds amateur sleuths, Judith Potts, Becks Starling and Susie Harris involved in discovering who is behind the blackmail and killing of two deceased men.

Without the help of their police contact, they must go it alone.

For Judith, this is a difficult time as an unexpected visitor arrives bringing up unwanted memories.

I found this book brings together many outstanding questions from the previous books about the main characters.

Even after watching the TV series The Marlow Murder Club I still thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.

I really enjoy spending time with the characters in the Marlow Murder Club. I love how each of the women are different, but work so well together and how each are strong in their own way.
The mystery surrounding the murders in this book definitely kept me guessing, although I did have an inkling at one point.
This is a great series and I really want to watch the TV show now to see it come to life more.

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts the 5th instalment in the 'Marlow Murder Club' series, by Robert Thorogood. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait for book 6. Two dead celebrities. One village full of secrets.

The story is set in the charming village of Marlow, England, which provides a beautiful backdrop for the mystery. The quirky trio of Judith, Suzie, and Becks is once again at the center of the story, and their interactions are both humorous and engaging.

The plot is cleverly constructed, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing.

The book leaves readers with some answers to Judith's past, overall, "The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts " is a fun, entertaining read that combines humor, mystery, and theater perfectly.

I love this series and I legitimately clapped like a sealion when I heard I was getting a proof.

The way that Murder on the Marlow Belle ended had me desperate to discover what happened next. Though Judith has always been central to the mysteries of the Marlow Murder Club, this book had her past holding centre stage.

I will be writing a full review closer to publication, because I have so much to say.

𝗠𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀

As soon as I discovered the victim was a local football legend my heart sunk. I hate sport and football is right at the top, I just don't get the thrill of kicking a ball for an hour and a half against others trying to get it and do the same. This is going to sound really bad and please remember this is fiction but I was overjoyed when another body turned up and it became apparent that sport would not be involved in the story after all.

What I have really liked is the mystery surrounding Judith's husband that has been running quietly in the background throughout the series. With a surprise visitor turning up will we finally get the answer of whether Judith herself is capable of murder!

While I have enjoyed this series, they seem to have lost a bit of the magic as the series has gone on and the humour which grabbed me in book one is also lacking.

Judith’s past life has caught up with her so when Tanika approaches the 3 ladies asking for help to solve famous footballer, Gary’s, murder she’s too preoccupied to be her usual nosy problem solving self. When another a celebrity is murdered and Tanika is suspended the women realise they need to act quickly. Will Judith be able to put her past ghosts to bed to be able to help? Will Suzy and Becks cope without her? Will they catch their murderer?

I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as previous ones. It felt a bit forced at times, and also a little daft at others. I still think the women are cracking and without question will read the next instalment 🤣

Book Review: The Mysterious Affair Of Judith Potts

Two celebrities are found dead in the quiet town of Marlow—first a famous soccer player, then a bestselling author. In this fifth installment of the Marlow Murder Club fear is spreading and Judith, Suzie, and Becks must uncover the truth behind a tangled web of secrets, blackmail, and scandal. With their police ally suspended and Judith’s past about to resurface, the personal stakes rising and the Marlow Murder Club races to stop the killer before they strike again.

This is the fifth installment in The Marlow Murder Club series, and unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

One thing that continues to feel unrealistic is how readily a police inspector seeks out—and even encourages—the involvement of an 80-year-old woman and her two quirky friends in active murder investigations. While I understand the series leans into charm and eccentricity, this aspect feels increasingly hard to overlook.

After reading both book four and this installment, it’s clear the author is aiming for a trio of endearing, unconventional amateur sleuths. However, what once came across as quirky and fun now feels more like selfishness and entitlement. Judith, Susie, and Becks started out as characters I genuinely rooted for in what was a lighthearted cozy mystery series, but over time, they’ve become frustratingly indifferent to the people around them.

That said, the characters are well-developed, which is precisely why this shift feels so disappointing. I’ve become invested in them, making it frustrating to no longer enjoy their company the way I once did. At the same time, the author does a commendable job of highlighting the importance of strong relationships and the role they play in our lives.

The pacing also felt slow, and it took me longer than usual to finish simply because I wasn’t eager to pick it back up. There’s an attempt to build suspense around Judith’s past, but it remains mostly on the back burner, making it easy to forget rather than adding meaningful tension.

The novel does touch lightly on the topic of domestic abuse and the lengths a person may go to in order to survive, which adds some depth to the story.

I was genuinely excited for this fifth book, but ultimately, I found myself disappointed with the direction the characters have taken. Still, the author’s writing style remains smooth and easy to read, and the mystery itself is neatly resolved without loose ends. I’m less convinced about how seamlessly certain elements—particularly those involving Judith’s husband—align with earlier explanations in the series, though that may be more a matter of memory than execution.

Overall, while I personally didn’t enjoy the evolution of the characters, it is still a well-written mystery, and readers who appreciate quirky, character-driven cozies may find it entertaining.2 1/2 stars🌟

Robert Thorogood’s writing is like having a cup of tea and one biscuit. You intend to stop at just one, but of course you go back for more.
One chapter leads to another, and before you know it you’re halfway through the book. His writing is comforting, addictive and thoroughly
entertaining.

Judith, Suzie and Becks are at it again, this time with a double murder to solve in the fifth book of The Marlow Murder Club series by Robert Thorogood.

Judith’s past is catching up with her. She’s been keeping secrets, and a stranger is determined to bring the truth to light. The story begins where the previous book, The Murder on the Marlow Belle, ends, with Judith receiving an unexpected visit that raises questions about her late husband’s death. If you haven’t read the earlier books, I’d definitely recommend catching up first.

This series has become a truly cosy and joyful read for me. I’ve loved returning to these well-established characters, who complement each other perfectly. The humour and banter in this instalment are even more apparent, and there’s a wonderfully familiar warmth in the way the ladies interact with each other and with the local residents. They’re more confident and forceful now — and even the vicar’s wife is starting to take a few risks!

The murders themselves aren’t dark; this remains very much a cosy mystery, but with clever plotting and satisfying twists. You may think you’ve guessed the solution, but there’s always something unexpected waiting. Judith keeps you on your toes with the way she pieces everything together, often running rings around the police.
The novel is full of wit, humour, and just enough clues to keep you guessing.

You’d think I might start to tire of the series by now, but these characters continue to thoroughly entertain me. I always look forward to seeing what the three ladies get up to next, they've become like old friends.

Thank you to Rachel Quinn and HQ for the proof copy, which I received in return for my honest opinion.

Okay but can we talk about how absolutely delightful this book is???

Because The Mysterious Affair of the Judith Potts completely charmed its way into my heart from the very first page, and I am officially obsessed. I’ve watched the Marlow Murder Club on PBS, but I had never read the books. I feared I’d be lost stating with book 5, but that definitely was not the case. It was thoroughly enjoyable from the first to the last page.

Judith Potts might be one of my new favorite cozy mystery heroines ever. She is clever, fiercely independent, wonderfully eccentric, and exactly the kind of character you can’t help but root for. A crossword puzzle creator who lives happily alone by the river and absolutely refuses to be ignored? ICONIC behavior, honestly. And Becks and Suzie? Absolutely incredible. The three of them together are pure cozy mystery magic.

And the mystery itself? SO GOOD.

Just when I thought I had things figured out, another twist popped up and sent me right back to guessing. It has that perfect classic whodunit feel that cozy mystery lovers crave, with clever clues, charming small-town vibes, and just enough suspense to keep the pages turning way past bedtime.

Highlights:
• Judith Potts is an absolute legend of a main character
• The trio of amateur sleuths is pure cozy magic
• Classic whodunit vibes that feel fresh and clever
• Twists that kept me guessing until the end

This book is cozy mystery perfection; clever, funny, charming, and impossible to put down. If you love small town mysteries, strong and quirky female characters, and a puzzle that keeps you guessing, you absolutely need this one on your shelf.

I already can’t wait to spend more time with Judith, Becks, and Suzie.

Many thanks to @poisonedpenpress and @robertthorogoodwriter for the ARC. It was truly a privilege to read and review this absolutely delightful mystery.

If you love cozy mysteries with humor, heart, and a brilliantly clever sleuth, The Mysterious Affair of the Judith Potts is one you won’t want to miss. 📚✨

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts a cozy mystery novel

This was the first book I have read in the series, even though it was book 5, I felt I was able to follow along easily, and of course the mysteries themselves were fun to try and solve, and there were both murders and a main character mystery going on at the same time!

There is not 1 but 2 murders to solve for Judith, Suzie and Becks in this story, and they both happen to be local celebrities, one an author and one a football player. The 3 friends of course can't not investigate, so they start doing their thing. They usually have some assistance from DI Malik, but she has been put on leave, and a guy nobody likes put in charge. The ladies are able to get some information from him with their own stealthy ways, but have to stay unseen as they investigate to avoid getting put behind bars themselves.

There are so many possible suspects as the sleuthing starts, I really had no idea who the murderer could be. I kept changing my guess as the story went along, but was not remotely correct when all was revealed. As the friends are investigating the murder mystery, Judith's own past has come back to haunt her, in the form of being accused of murder herself!

I loved each of the characters, who bring a unique perspective and way of getting information. The most cryptic of course being Judith, who is into cross word puzzles, leaving a clue behind for her friends at one point, that they can't seem to decipher. As the murderer is revealed, I was amazed at how elaborately they had planned out the 2 killings. Judith also reveals her secrets from the past, which the reader has also been guessing at the entire story.

Good luck to any reader who takes on figuring out this mystery, it is such a fun read and had a lovely unexpected ending.

Thank you so much to Poisoned Pen Press, the author, and netgalley for a copy of this book!

Some fav quotes:
"“This is how we solve crimes. We investigate, you try to stop us, and then together we catch the killer.”"

""I said I was sure that being made love to by him would be like being jumped on by an old and very ugly toad.”"

"Judith caught Suzie’s eye, the pair of them thinking the same thing. They were two women hiding in a changing room as a man took his clothes off. The absurdity of the situation hit them both at the same time, and Judith’s hand went to her mouth to stifle a giggle."

"The women looked at each other and realized, as they stood in the warmth of the winter sun, that they’d always have each other. Through thick and thin. Good times and bad."

This book came out yesterday.
I started the audiobook for this today.

I.... inhaled this book in one sitting.
...Oops.

An incredible, INCREDIBLE book. I was SO happy to be back in Marlow with the wonderful Judith Potts, and her friends Becks and Suzie. But this book finally, FINALLY shines the light on the biggest mystery of them all. What actually happened to Judith's husband? And will her past finally come back to haunt her?

As with the other books, not only are we dealing with yet another murder in Marlow, but also the mystery of Judith's ex husbands daughter coming to Marlow to accuse her of murder. Judith, naturally, is completely shaken by this and hopes she can keep this contained... but as always, she eventually let's her friends into her troubles. But... is that the best idea? Or will it make her predicament more complicated?

As for the murder mystery, they are on their own as their friend is suspended from the force. A famous football player who lived in Marlow turns up dead. His wife is shocked, as she doesn't know why someone would kill him. Even though they can't get any major help from the police, Judith and her friends really can't help themselves from investigating. Because this murder may be linked to something bigger than only murder, and they need to get to the bottom of it.

I loved the reveals throughout the book, and I really adored how the book wrapped up. I do really hope there will be more books in the future, but with the way this books ends, I wouldn't be super sad. Because the story wraps up in the most beautiful way.

If you are looking for a super cosy murder mystery series, then I cannot recommend the Marlow Murder Club any higher. It's quite frankly the best murder series I've read!!

**My thanks to Poisoned Pen Press for providing me with an advanced review copy via NetGalley**

I loved this installment in the Marlow Murder Club series, which finally unearths some of the secrets buried in Judith’s past that have been teased since the very first book! In this title, a contemporary murder coincides with Judith being accused of murdering her late husband by his recently-revealed illegitimate child; Judith and co. must therefore try to solve the current case while clearing Judith’s name, all while dodging the increasingly hostile police (their ally Tanika having been placed on leave). This layering of mysteries works really well and kept my interest keen throughout the book, particularly at the points where the current and cold cases seemed to converge.

Suzy and Becks are in fine form in this book, and spend some time investigating on their own as Judith is preoccupied with her late husband’s case reopening. The contemporary case also proves just as interesting to unravel as the mystery of Judith’s past, featuring a cast of interestingly nasty suspects, secret societies, hidden tunnels, society balls, and other exciting goodies of a murder involving the wealthy.

If you’ve read the previous installments in the series but aren’t sure whether to continue in it, I can highly recommend that you do so; I think this is Judith Potts’ best book yet.

Judith, Suzie and Becks are back, and once again Marlow is absolutely not coping. The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts picks up straight after The Murder on the Marlow Belle, with Judith facing some uncomfortable truths about her past while two fresh murders and a dash of blackmail land on their plates.

Robert Thorogood’s writing is still like having a cup of tea with one biscuit that accidentally turns into five. It’s comforting, addictive, and ridiculously easy to devour. The humour and banter shine, and being back with these characters feels instantly familiar and cosy.

The murders stay firmly in cosy-crime territory, with clever plotting, playful twists, and just enough misdirection to keep you guessing. You’ll think you’ve solved it. You probably haven’t. Another delightful, chaotic time with this amateur sleuth trio.

P.S.: Was this the final book in this series?? It felt a bit final or something?
