I was going to a land they couldn’t access so even if I died, they’d never find me. I would never see them again. Tears pricked my eyes, but I was determined not to cry. How could I grieve for them when they were safe? I wasn’t.
It had been ages since I’d eaten chocolate, and I tore it open on our way out of the shop. It turned out to be an alarming green.
‘Green tea,’ Marla assured me.
But behind her back, Liam mouthed, ‘Grass.’
I felt completely alone.
How are you alone? It was Liam.
I couldn’t help but smile. Stop listening.
But then you really would be alone.
