The Song Beneath Saltwater opens in the quiet fishing community of Tidebreak Cove, where we meet Evelyn—content with her life, yet undeniably different. From the very beginning, there’s an undercurrent of something not quite right, a subtle sense that she is meant for more than the life she knows. Evelyn (Evie) comes across as sharp-witted and resilient, someone who doesn’t shy away from challenges—even those she doesn’t yet understand.
The story begins by grounding us in her familiar world: her home in Tidebreak Cove, her close relationship with her father and her mother, Cora, and her childhood sweetheart, Rowan—a hunter with whom she can already picture a future. But as the ocean begins to call to her—both literally and metaphorically—everything changes. When the deep finally claims her, she’s thrust into a world of ancient courts, hidden truths, and responsibilities she never expected—but refuses to run from.
From there, the story unfolds into a captivating mix of tidal magic, dangerous alliances, and hidden truths, with a touch of romance woven throughout. At its core, the story follows a hidden princess who discovers she is the last heir to a lost underwater kingdom. She must navigate war, prophecy, and dangerous court politics as she struggles to reclaim her place—all while being pulled between two very different paths, and two very different loves.
I’ll admit, my first impression during the opening chapters was that the story moved a bit slowly. However, that slower pace serves an important purpose—it builds the foundation for Evelyn’s journey of self-discovery. Once the story finds its rhythm, it becomes incredibly hard to put down. The deeper I got into the book, the more invested I became in both the world and the characters.
One of the strongest aspects of this story is its balance. While romance is certainly present, it never overshadows Evelyn’s growth. Her journey to understand who she is and what she must do to protect both of her worlds always remains front and center.
That said, the romance adds an extra layer of tension and emotion, especially through the soft love triangle between Rowan and Kaelor. Rowan represents her past—familiar, steady, and full of genuine love. Kaelor, on the other hand, brings something entirely different. As a protector who has guarded the depths for centuries, he carries a quiet strength and mystery that makes him stand out. What makes Kaelor especially compelling is that he never tries to control Evelyn’s choices. Instead, he supports her from a distance, allowing her the space to step fully into her identity.
In many ways, choice becomes the defining element of Evelyn and Kaelor’s connection. His unwavering respect for her independence, along with a promise tied to her past, creates a relationship built on trust and understanding rather than obligation. Watching that dynamic unfold is one of the most rewarding parts of the book.
And then there’s the ending. Without giving anything away, I can confidently say it left an impression. I finished the final pages both amazed and a little heartbroken—immediately needing to talk about it. The cliffhanger is strong, but it feels earned, setting up the next installment with plenty of unanswered questions about the deep, the magic, and Evelyn’s role moving forward.
Overall, The Song Beneath Saltwater is a beautifully layered story of identity, destiny, and choice. It’s a journey that pulls you in slowly, then refuses to let go—and I, for one, am more than ready to dive into the next book.

I am writing this with a pretty heavy heart. I never like to give authors anything below a four star rating, but I am afraid that is what I am going to have to do.
Let me begin with the positives. I love the world, the characters are interesting, and the idea of the story is a great one. I was sat for the first half of the book. Had no issues.
However, as I continued I found it harder and harder to go back to the book. I would pick it up and then put it down just a couple of pages later. I struggled to read 10% in a week, and it had nothing to do with the idea, but instead the execution.
It is the composition of the story, the very foundation of the writing, and I feel like it needs to be edited more and made to flow better. Reading on my phone, I am used to formatting being a little wonky, but the choppy nature of the writing and the lack of descriptors to better help one figure out who is talking were absent through a lot of dialogue scenes.
I often had to reread segments to figure out who spoke first because the conversations flipped so fast as to be only one quoted reply per line with no break. Think a tennis match, or even when you are sitting watching a conversation and you ping back and forth.
Those were my main issues, but it also bothered me that they didn't speak in full sentences sometimes. It would be a back and forth of one or two word responses and it felt cold and impersonal and also added to that choppy feel.
I feel that with a lot of editing and some rewriting to better help the cadence and flow of the story it could become something amazing, but for now, for me it just didn't hit the mark. I really hope this helps and under no circumstances do I want the author to think that I disliked her idea, I just feel it wasnt ready yet.

King Kaelor rules the abyss a hidden kingdom deep beneath the sea protecting a world that seems to be fracturing more every day. Evelyne thought she knew who she was until one day the sea started calling her name.
This story takes you on an enchanting journey filled with ocean magic, political intrigue and ancient secrets. I loved the dialogue in this story and will be looking forward to reading its sequel. However, the story was a little slow to start. This is pretty common with romantasy/fantasy and easy to get past. In the end I found this story to be an overall enjoyable and engaging read. I liked the strong FMC, the unique setting and magic system. My biggest critique is the actual formatting of the story which could at times be a bit distracting, while the overall content was great. I do think one of the love interests is slightly problematic and that also detracted from the story in some ways. While I did really enjoy this story, it does ends on a cliffhanger and the sequel isn't out yet; so if cliffhangers and unfinished series aren’t your thing I would add this to your TBR and wait for it to be complete.

The magic system in this book, and the premise, is so different from most of the books out there. I feel like most of the Romantasy books have fallen into a standard mold, and this breaks those molds. Evelyn knows what her life will hold with Rowan, but when she is taken below the surface to Coralheart, a whole new world opens to her and some things in her life begin to make sense. And let’s not forget Kaelor, the King who knows what needs to happen but who will never take choice away from Evelyn. He knows that binding the two together will keep the seals secure on the prison under the Trench, but he wants her consent. Too often, the MMC domineers over the FMC, but the way he handles Evelyn sets a new standard for respect.
I highly recommend “The Song Beneath Saltwater” for the Romantasy reader who wants something new and refreshing to read. I do not give out 5 star reviews, honestly I can say that it feels like most books fall into the same pattern lately, but “The Song Beneath Saltwater” does not follow that pattern and is the fresh book many of us needed. I can’t wait for book two and to see how Evelyn navigates all of the new world opened up to her.

I have been in the biggest funk lately. I've lost interest in so many of the things I usually love. Reading, hobbies, even just finding the motivation to do something for myself has felt almost impossible. Then I picked up this book... and somehow it completely pulled me out of that slump.
I finished it in less than two days because I genuinely could not put it down. From the very first chapter it had me hooked, and by the end I was practically falling off the edge of my seat. Every time I thought I knew what was coming next, it proved me wrong.

I really enjoyed The Song Beneath the Saltwater. What stayed with me most after finishing it was the atmosphere—there’s something very immersive and emotional about the way the story unfolds. It feels like a book that invites you to slow down and sit with its characters, its setting, and the feelings running underneath everything.
The characters are one of the book’s biggest strengths. They feel emotionally grounded, and their relationships seem to carry much of the novel’s impact. Rather than relying solely on dramatic events, the story appears to prioritize character development and emotional nuance. That makes the connections between the characters feel meaningful, keeps me engaged in their journeys, and allows me to have a more intimate and genuine experience with them.

I'm not one to pass around five stars like its not a big deal, because to me it is. A book has to hit a lot of expectations to get my five stars... I'll take them to the grave if I have to, but Sabrina hit me out of the blue with The Song Beneath Saltwater! It is draws you in, like a soft melody, and every chapter keeps building to something more.
The main character, Evie, is so relatable. She's unbothered by the biggest events happening to her, but throwing herself across chaise lounges dramatically if her favorite pen is missing (mind you that's not literal, obvs). I see Evie in myself and I was so very excited to get to know her, see her growth, and eagerly await her sass. The male leads (Kaelor and Rowan) are just on my "to-do" list.... Well, Kaelor is. Rowan irks me. Naia could be my little sister and there are so many other characters that build this world and story so well!

This book was great - FINALLY a unique setting, world, and magic system other than the typical fantasy tropes right now, and I'm greatly appreciative of that.
Evie was probably my favorite part of the book. She's relatable, likable, and very much in that stage of trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs. I'm really excited to see her growth throughout the rest of the series because I think there's a lot of potential there.
Team Kaelor, obviously. Rowan still has some personal growth to do, but I have faith he'll make us proud in future books.
My only qualm is that the beginning was a bit slow for me, which honestly isn't always a bad thing in fantasy to help establish the setting and characters. But if a book is going to take its time getting there, I usually expect a longer book. Though that's probably just the greedy reader in me wanting to spend as much time with these characters as possible. Already counting down until the next book comes out!

I read this as an ARC reader and couldn't have been more blown away by it!! I read this entire book in just a few days because I literally couldn't help myself and read every chance I found.
The world and the magic in this book are very different than anything that I've read and it was very captivating. The storyline kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat, I thought I knew what was going on but I was wildly wrong on many parts.
I absolutely love the fun, witty banter and found myself giggling throughout the whole book. The world building is beautiful and very unique, the characters and relationships are very well done and you can't help but fall in love.

This book, The Song Beneath Saltwater by Sabrina Bennett was a refreshing change from all the books I have ever read. The premise of this book caught my eye and gripped my attention right from the start.

Pros:
The story was very unique and captivating. I could not put it down.
There was a lot of mystery.
A lot of snarky/sarcastic one liners.
The colors added to the mystery.
For me the concept was so new that I had a hard time imagining what the scenery, sensations and concepts looked like. It added to the mystery.
It would be interesting to see it turned into a movie. How would the script writers and directors make it all work visually and conceptually?
Cons:
Almost too many one liners.
So many shades of silver. It was overwhelming.
A lot of repetitive descriptions.
I would have liked more character development.
Some sentence structure was awkward.
Found a couple punctuation mistakes.
It would have been nice for Evelyn to have another interaction with Maren and Cora. I won’t say why or even who they are. You will have to find out.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fast paced. Very detailed with restraint to the world building. I can tell book 2 is going to open up even more secrets. I absolutely LOVED the banter between FMC and 2nd MMC. It was fun, quick witted and snarky. I found myself smiling throughout each interaction between fmc and each character.
If you enjoyed the back story to Aquaman but wished it was a strong female instead, this is the story for you.
I’m excited to see what lays ahead for Evelyn and what the future holds for her and the two mmc’s.

The Song Beneath Saltwater is a beautifully written story that blends emotion, mystery, and unforgettable characters. The atmospheric setting and heartfelt relationships kept me invested from beginning to end, while the steady pacing allowed the story to unfold naturally. Although a few moments felt predictable, the emotional depth and satisfying conclusion made it a worthwhile read. If you enjoy character-driven stories with strong emotional themes and a touch of mystery, this book is definitely worth picking up.

Just wow!!!! I randomly stumbled across Sabrina’s Tic Tok page and signed up for her Arc team, let me just say I was hooked from the first page. Only took me 3 days to read and cannot wait to read book 2. The characters were so well written, I felt like I was under water with Evelyne and Kaelor throughout the progression of the story. Since it hasn’t been released yet I don’t want to give spoilers but really hope you give this book a chance and fall in love with it like I did ❤️

I can’t believe Sabrina left us on a cliffhanger like that! I absolutely enjoyed this book. This new take on an underwater world was so refreshing. I have never read anything like this before. Evelyne is a strong no bs woman who seeks answers when nobody is forthcoming with them. Kaelor is 100% my choice for her. He’s got humor and is so respectful of her. I feel like Rowan sees her as a possession. I can’t wait for the second one to come out!!

The beginning was a tad slow but I enjoy some good world building; however, once I got further in I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN LOL. I love a strong FMC in books and can’t wait to see how Evelyne evolves in the next book!!

ARC Reader here thank you to the author for allowing me to be one of the 1st people who got to experience this wonderful story… Imagine yourself growing up believing one thing and then suddenly finding out you really don’t know who or what you are. Well that is exactly what happens to Evelyn, the sea called her name and turns her world upside. She now has to find out what happened to her and why she was sent to be raised on land.

I absolutely loved this story. The world, the beautiful scenery, and characters completely pulled me in. My only complaint is that I wanted more. I found myself wishing we had spent more time exploring the surface and getting to know more about the people and the world on shore before exploring beneath the saltwater. The ending left me eager for answers. I can't wait to read the next book and see where the story goes.

I was hooked from the very beginning! The Song Beneath Saltwater is one of those books that pulls you in and refuses to let go. My favorite character for sure has to be Evelyn. She was witty, determined, sassy, and so easy to cheer for. The emotional moments hit hard, the story flowed beautifully, and I finished the book wishing I could read it again for the first time. Definitely one of my favorite reads! Starting the sequel, The Storm Beneath Saltwater now!

The POV and writing style for me, was a little difficult to follow at times. Although i loved the story, i did find myself struggling at times to dedicate time to read it. About 60% in I felt more invested and wanted to get answers. I enjoyed the slow burn, the unique setting and story. I have started on the sequel as a beta reader and I’m looking forward to the story unfolding further!

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. The world building is new and interesting. The characters are excellent, our FMC has a humor that had me giggling as I read. Finally a book with no spice but lots of tension! You will love the slow burn. I cannot wait for book 2.

I cannot say enough good things about this book!! It is so different from other fantasy/romantasy book I have read. If you like a slow burn, enemies to lovers, love triangle, this book has it all. The world building is exquisite and the don't get me started on the characters. Some you will love, some you will hate, and some you will love to hate!!!

Received as an ARC. This is a new author to me and this book was amazing . The first few pages just wrap you up in this story and eventually new world. The banter, the suspense, the two men who she’ll have to chose from- past or future. Best read so far of 2026

This book was lovely to read. My first siren story I’ve read and I enjoyed it. This story made me laugh out loud, kick my feet, swoon and maybe once or twice throw it across the room. The FMC was spunky and really just amazing. I definitely recommend this book, especially for a summer read.
