The Merchant Guild wants a monopoly. The Dungeon Regulatory Commission wants paperwork. The feral monsters just want to eat the guests.
Matthias Bauer’s cozy frontier inn has a new a domesticated, non-lethal training dungeon operating right under the floorboards. By turning a starving Dungeon Heart into a profitable agility course, Matthias has revolutionized the local adventuring economy. But success on the frontier attracts the worst kind of bureaucrats and saboteurs.
When Inspector Vane of the Dungeon Regulatory Commission arrives to condemn the property, Matthias must prove his basement is a highly regulated hospitality amenity. To complicate matters, the corrupt Merchant Guild has escalated their economic war from embargoes to outright sabotage, culminating in a magical arson attack on the new Crafting Wing. And if that wasn't enough, ancient feral monsters from the unsealed lower levels have decided to breach the dining room.
Armed with a cast-iron skillet, airtight liability waivers, and his loyal staff—including a foxkin manager, a grumpy dwarven smith, and a lemon-scented cleaning slime named Grumble—Matthias is ready to defend his business. In a world of magic and mayhem, German efficiency might be the deadliest weapon of all.
I have been enjoying this series immensely. The plot, writing, and character development are all good. I love stories where people learn and grow. My only problem with this book and the previous one in the series is that the author and/or the editor forgot to remove alternative versions of specific scenes in the story. It's confusing and annoying.
My reviews are my own. If you enjoyed this book, I'm glad you did. If not, I respect your opinion, so please respect mine. This is simply my perspective, so let's keep the discussion courteous. My review is honest and voluntary. As a reader, I read to escape the world and its issues, and my reviews reflect that.
Same issues noted by another reviewer, the books don't follow an organic progression, they jump all over the place, they are repetitive, things that were solved on previous books, come back as an issue. The timeline is a mess, not allowing the reader to really focus in the story. The whole series needed a better editor and I'm so done with the "German" thing. It is ok to be proud of where you come from but don't push feed it to others.
Onward and forward to my next adventure. Happy reading!!!
