Mike Travis is in trouble... ...he is displaying all the signs and symptoms of demonic possession with no–one around to help him. On top of which, his old friend and mentor Dai Bricks is also in need of help with only Mike to turn to. Despite his misgivings about his own spiritual and mental health, Mike agrees to go to Dai’s aid. Well, of course he does! Together they go the village of Aberth on the Welsh border, where things are falling apart, as the dead are returning. Dai’s friend, Gwyneth falls foul of the source of the upheaval and it is her death that triggers his determination to put things to rights; a determination that has untold consequences for them all, as an old adversary makes a re-appearance. Sin Eating is an old Welsh custom where the sins of the dead are removed and assumed by the local Sin Eater, allowing the deceased to pass on without the burden of their sins; it’s an old custom that has not died out in Aberth, and has devastating repercussions. With the appearance of traditional death omens, such as the Corpse Candle and Phantom Funeral, the village of Aberth is under siege with the clock ticking towards Samhain, the night of the dead.
Unfortunately, having enjoyed the first five books in the series, I found this one very disappointing. The plot wasn't original and felt overblown; it was pretty much just a rehash of the basic plot of Long Shadows (Mike Travis #2). There was only one brief, decent twist; the rest was very predictable.
There were quite a few instances of characters having contrived catch-up flashbacks to the other books; in my opinion, a lazy writing technique. They contain spoilers for the previous books, if you haven't read them, so this is NOT a stand-alone story. On the other hand, there was too much unexplained mystery surrounding another new character, Beckett. I believe his story is told in another trilogy by the author and if, like me, you haven't read those, you are left with a lot of unanswered questions. I wish the author had spent more time on this story, instead of using it as a vehicle to promote her other books.
I felt the overall quality of the writing was poor and there were far too many grammatical errors in the Kindle version. Despite having a soft spot for the series and the main characters, I can't rate this any higher.
Sadly I've arrived at book seven, meaning the last book in this particular series. It was a fantastic read and I highly recommend it. The good news is that Mikes about to become a demon hunter in a different, (shorter) series of books. What a guy he is being a paranormal investigator, protector of Avalon and now a demon hunter! Let's see what he gets up to next.
