Dr. Caroline Leaf is a cognitive neuroscientist with a PhD in Communication Pathology specializing in Neuropsychology. Since the early 1980‘s she has studied and researched the Mind-Brain connection. During her years in clinical practice as a Communication Pathologist she developed tools and processes that help people develop and change their thinking and subsequent behavior. Her scientific Science of Thought techniques have transformed the lives of patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), learning disabilities, emotional traumas and released the potential of thousands of young students and adults.

She has presented her unique Switch On Your Brain with the 5-Step Learning Process® and the Metacognitive-Map™ learning tool to thousands of students worldwide.

She developed the Geodesic Learning™ theory (how we think and process information) that has been conservatively shown to increase thinking, behavioral and academic performance by 35-75%. This revolutionary theory explains the Science of Thought, stating how thoughts form, how we process information and the power of the non-conscious mind and the relationship between the non-conscious and conscious. It explains that everything you do is first a physical thought in the physical brain. You think, and then you do, which cycles back to the original thought, changing it, and the thoughts connected to it, in a dynamic interrelationship. This was a great book with some inspiring ideas. I loved how Leaf used her Christianity beliefs in companion with her scientific knowledge. She even helped me see a different meaning behind some specific scriptures. Leaf explains the science of the brains chemistry in an extremely easy way to understand. Coming from someone who has anxiety and is always stressing about something, I feel like Leaf offers a lot of solid ideas for learning how to change thoughts and control unhealthy emotions. Even if you don't think you struggle with anxiety, ADHD, depression, ect., there isn't anybody who couldn't benefit from reading this book.

Our daughter, Bridget, gave me this book for Christmas. There are only 138 pages in this book. I couldn't put this book down. In fact, I read it in just a few hours today. Dr. Leaf states that reserachers say that 87% of the illnesses that plague us today are a direct result of our thought life. Once you read what she has to say on how your brain works and what happens to your body when we think negative thoughts, you can't wait to get to the last chapter and learn the steps to controlling your thinking. It is an excellent book.

I had the honour of hearing this enthusiastic and knowledgeable author speak at my Church over a period of three days.I even got a copy of my book signed:) I was in awe by how she used her psychological research to prove the word of God. The main focus of the book is how thoughts affect our brains; toxic thoughts can physically and emotionally harm us. The good news is that we are able to transform our way of thinking and live more positive, fruitful lives.

Although the writer is a PhD, the book is written in simple English and the psychology concepts are very easy to understand. It was a quick read and very enlightening!

If I were to summarize “Who Switched off my Brain?”, in one sentence, it would be that: toxic (negative) thoughts, and the emotions that they are associated with, will physically alter the human body in a harmful way and by becoming aware of this process we can implement strategies to reduce negative thinking and moderate the corresponding chemicals that harm us.

At a more in-depth level, Dr. Caroline Leaf starts the book with an explanation of the physical process that takes place in our brain as we have thoughts and generate emotions. Not having had any education in the field of biology I may not be a good indicator of how technical/complex a discussion on brain function and chemistry should/could be; however, while I did find myself rereading several of the paragraphs, from a laypersons perspective the information was still basic enough that I could grasp the concepts. For example, Dr. Leaf explains that, “What you think and feel prompts your hypothalamus to begin a series of chemical secretions that change the way you function. The hypothalamus also directly influences the pituitary, another major gland within the brain. In this way, the hypothalamus gland is definitely warm actually the facilitator and originator of emotions and responds to life circumstances, such as fear, anxiety, stress, tension, panic attacks, phobia, rage, anger and aggression.”

Dr. Leaf goes on to explain that, “Thoughts that you don’t deal with properly become suppressed and can cause emotional and physical harm.” In other words, the negative thoughts we hold onto eventually cause a negative chemical response in our bodies that have a long-term, disastrous effect on our well-being. Fear, in and of itself, has vast and far ranging implications for our physical condition, “Research shows that fear, all on its own, triggers more than 1400 known physical and chemical responses and activates more than 30 different hormones.”

If we are feeling guilt, anger, resentment, self-doubt, cynicism and any other negative emotion we can think of, it is easy to see that our body eventually starts to rebel with digestive disorders, muscular tension, stunted growth in children, and a whole host of life threatening diseases
In spite of all the adverse effects of holding onto negative thoughts and emotions, Dr. Leaf uses the latter part of the book to present ways in which individuals can “detox their brain” and bring better health and harmony into their lives. Just as our thoughts can cause illness and disease, so too can they rejuvenate and restore health - but it all starts with awareness and the desire to break old habits and consciously create new, positive ones. Some of the steps to wellness include: consciously controlling our thoughts, expressing our emotions, taking responsibility, learning forgiveness, and various other practical actions we can take.

When we consider that, “87% of the illnesses that plague us today are a direct result of our thought life… what we think about affects us physically and emotionally. It’s an epidemic of toxic emotions.” then reading a 140 page book filled with information on how to reduce, or even eliminate, those toxic thoughts and emotions seems like the deal of a lifetime - and for many of us it might just be.

This book sort of felt like quasi-science. There were mentions of studies done and research shows this but there was no reference to what studies these were or who did them.

While I think there are some good things in this book and that I agree with the fact that our thoughts and emotions can affect our physical well-being, I don't agree with it to the extent that the author holds to be true and that we just need to change our thought patterns to become healthy again. There definitely seems to be some missing facts here. But I'm not a scientist so what do I know.

I also didn't like the drawings in the book of the brain dressed as a person with a hat on. I didn't find they helped me understand the brain at all and felt they were actually childish.

This is, by far, the most practical book on cognitive development and mind change I have ever read. The practical five step process she developed is very simple and very powerful to use. I have had mental breakthroughs using her system that I have needed for decades.

Not only does she offer the practical system, she goes into great detail (but not too confusing detail) into how and why our thoughts have the effect that they do on our brain cells. This detail allows us to have confidence in applying the principles she teaches. It also gives us insight into how and when to use the principles she teaches. I have read this book over five times and have used it to develop my own system for cognitive training for myself and my peak performance coaching clients. Other than the Bible, there is no other book that has given me greater transformation. I can not say enough about this book.

Note: the original version goes into more scientific detail. However, it does not have the practical system I discuss here in this review. The revised version does have the practical system but not as much scientific detail. So, based on your needs, select your version accordingly.

Very good book. I would recommend it to everyone who wants to understand how the mind and the power of our thoughts/words work. The author is a Christian psychologist/therapist, but she does not push Christianity, she just states that she is a Christian and that works for her. She believes that faith is an important component for a healthy life/mind, and challenges the reader to find their own belief system.

Dr. Leaf's way of explaining scientific/medical processes is simple, and all audiences could benefit from reading this book. She has been doing research in the cognitive science arena for more than 20 years, and counsels individuals in need. Her knowledge is refreshing.

I really tried to get into this and I thought it would offer real insight. At best it was warmed over info that you could get from any self help book wrapped in a neuroscience disguise.

I found this to be fascinating and very helpful. I am interested in scientific research that relates to my everyday life which is in abundance in this short book about the brain. The beginning chapters were pretty technical and had a lot of words related to the brain that I am unfamiliar with so that part dragged along a bit for me. However, after reading those beginning chapters, I have a much better understanding of how thoughts are processed and stored.

Caroline Leaf goes into a lot of detail in the first four chapters about how inter-related our thoughts are to our emotions and our health. Who Switched Off My Brain gives scientific research that supports what the Bible has said relating to our thoughts and thinking on things that are positive rather than negative. I liked the last two chapters best because those are the ones which focused more on how we can actually take control of our thoughts.

There are 13 techniques listed in the last chapter to implement to detox our brains. The one that "jumped" out at me describes exactly how if feel Mondays through Fridays which I share with you here:
"Rush, rush, rush! Hurry, hurry, hurry! Busy, busy, busy! The ever-increasing pace of life is called the “acceleration syndrome,” and it is causing a global epidemic of hurry sickness. The next time you think you don’t have time for exercise or relaxation, think again. The reality is simply that you have chosen to fill your time with activities and things other than exercise and relaxation." P. 135-136

I really need to relax during the weekdays too! Just to give you a sampling of some other things I learned by reading Who Switched Off My Brain?: Laugh and play every day, exercise, take time alone for prayer, love others no matter what, forgive freely, don’t eat when angry, touch, and root of stress is fear.

The book feels like a very simplified application of neuroscience, neuroplasticity and epigenetics, how we can change our thoughts and our brains in the process. It does not contain enough objectivity or information for the reader to make a fair evaluation. I guess the author tries to make it simple, and the notes in the back show that it is much more complex, but it still feels a lot like popular neuroscience(or neuroscience for dummies). Together with this science, she leaps to scripture and show how ideas are manifested there, but it’s often a very direct way. There is no extra theology in between. What I would have liked, is a little more dense read, and maybe take the step into psychology before going into the scripture and explaining the reasons why the scripture tell us the same thing as science. This book however is a 150 page big type fast read, so it is a bit gritty and direct in its approach. Leaf is not a very good writer in that sense, but she does put forth a somehow convincing argument nonetheless. An example is the sentence “Science and the Bible teach us not to fear!” but so does our human nature, and there is a lot more to fear than it only being good to avoid it. The last part, when Leaf goes through every one of her “Toxic Dozen”, it becomes a bit self helpy and formulaic, but also practical.

The Goodreads description of this book surprised me. The author quotes the Bible maybe a handful of times. I wouldn't describe this as a scriptural guidance book so much as a book about the brain with the occasional Biblical quote thrown in.

Leaf does a great job of breaking down how the brain creates and stores memories. She discusses: why we save some memories and not others, how to form new memories, and how children are affected by their brain chemistry. Chapter Six, detailing coping mechanisms, was particularly helpful. It's not a long read nor does it use complex language, which was nice.

I'd recommend this book to anyone- as we could all use fewer toxic thoughts and more positive ones in our brains.

I love the premise of this book and of Dr Leaf’s take on toxic thought but I was very disappointed with the structure of the book itself. 5 of 6 chapters were filled with repetitive info, some irrelevant, and illustrations that didn’t make sense or, at best, didn’t add to the concept. The last chapter was the best but still not very in-depth if you are looking for practical application. Again, I’m a fan of Dr Leaf’s work but I would start with another Of her books instead of this one. Hopefully they are better written, organized, and more helpful in general.

This book is a highly practical guide to removing unhealthy patterns in our lives. It focuses on a process of gathering details, reflecting on their healthiness (or destructiveness), journaling in order to map out what is happening, revisiting the issue with greater clarity and then reaching out with a new, healthier habit.

Dr. Leaf has identified twelve debilitating processes that lead to breakdowns in thinking, health and spiritual well-being. She calls them the “dirty dozen”. They are: toxic thoughts, toxic emotions, toxic words, toxic choices, toxic dreams, toxic seeds, toxic faith, toxic love, toxic touch, toxic seriousness, toxic health and toxic schedules. Combining brain research from her PhD, Scripture and practice steps for each toxic effect, Leaf maps out a health plan for the reader to follow.

The chapters are short, highly accessible and tightly woven around the subject matter. There are few anecdotal diversions which leaves a work that succinctly provides tools for healthier living. Very enjoyable read.

Dla pierwszego znajomego i dla tych, którzy próbują samodzielnie sobie pomóc, nie prosząc o wsparcie - są dobre wskazówki. Polecam nie-specjalistom szerokiemu gronu odbiorców.

Nie do końca zgadzam się z koncepcją książki: jeśli jest to propaganda religijna, to należy o tym powiedzieć; jeśli informacja są przeznaczona dla docelowych odbiorców medyczno-religijnych, należy to również przekazać czytelnikowi z wyprzedzeniem. W przeciwnym razie dyskryminacja jest odczuwalna, jeśli ktoś wierzy w swojego boga, innego niż ogólnie przyjęty.
W 2021 roku książka jest przestarzała pod względem treści i znaczenia: klienci i ich terapeuci są teraz znacznie mądrzejsi.

The first part of this book was so-so for me. It felt like an odd mixture of technical information written in a non-technical way so it wouldn't scare you off. There was nothing wrong with the information, it just didn't blend well in my opinion. And, there was hardly any story-telling, and this would prevent many people from reading the book.

The last part of the book was excellent. This is where it laid a practical, step-by-step plan to deal with toxic areas of your life. Caroline Leaf calls them the "Dirty Dozen." I plan to keep the book close at hand for the next week or so to pick it up and read these practical sections again.

This book exceeded my expectations! Not only does it explain the science behind thinking and how that correlates with your health, but it also gives you very practical solutions for dealing with toxic thoughts. It is a short read but gives you much to think about. It can be slightly confusing in the science-y parts of the book, but it is generally easy to comprehend. Also, she quotes the Bible like it is truth, which it is. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially to people who often struggle with toxic thoughts and health problems related to stress. This book could help so many people.

Dr Caroline Leaf is a brain scientist who has specialized in the science of thoughts for over 20 years. She is also a Christian. In this book, she explains scientifically (though in layman's terms) how our thoughts affect our bodies, and even our genes (epigenetics). She shows how to utilize this knowledge to better our mental and physical health.

Some minor annoyances...

She throws in Bible verses here and there that are pertinent to what she is discussing, but not always taken in context to the greater Bible passage that it came from. Also the verses are taken from the NLT version which used quite a bit of artistic license in its translation. I personally think a more literal translation like the NKJV would have been a better fit.

The interior graphic design of the book is very amateurish. Bad spacing, too many different fonts and cheap clipart really didn't do this wonderful book justice.

Nitpicking aside, I only had one real issue with the book...
I docked one star because in chapter 18, she discusses an experiment involving baby monkeys that were starved of contact from older monkeys to see the affect on their health. Not only can I think of several flaws off the top of my head which renders this experiment ludicrous, but I also believe that authors should stop quoting the findings of animal experiments because it seemingly justifies this cruelty. Animals are not for experimenting on.

Despite its flaws, I really believe this is an important book that should be read by almost everyone at some point in their lives.

It is a quick and easy read but there are sections that require meditation and I get the feeling that if I read this book a few times, new pearls will be revealed each time. I'm about to go for round two.

The reason why I didn't give five stars is that a lot of the information presented is scientific, and just not very interesting or of use to me. The author did a great job of relating the scientific to Biblical Scriptures, which is not easy. In fact, it is hard to convince scientists that there is a God, so it was refreshing to read a book that explained the physical processes going on in your brain, and then give recommendation how to get mental healing from toxic issues by relying on scripture philosophies. I do like many of the activities that are recommended.

I follow Dr. Caroline Leaf on IG and love her posts so I thought I’d check out one of her books from the library. Maybe some of her newer books are better? Most of this book is a dry scientific explanation of the mind-body relationship as it pertains to toxic thoughts. The last chapter was practical application. I feel like the first five chapters could have been condensed and the last chapter practical application could have gone way deeper. Overall though, helpful info to know and apply to your life and thought patterns for sure.

I can't say I like her writing style, it has that yucky self-help book tone that turns me off and for some reason nothing she has written so far has stuck in my brain. Yet nonetheless, I am pleased that a Christian scientist wrote a book on this subject, i hope I enjoy the last half of the book more then the first half

After seeing DVD series of Dr. Caroline leaf, my brain just saw the light and I was able to believe in healing, and to work on a plan to achieve my healing. Understanding how the brain works through her shared knowledge saved me from several years of Chronic depression. For this reason I was excited to read this book and I wasn't disappointed. As a Christian, it was very enjoyable all throughout because everything she mentioned resonated with my beliefs, but if you are not Christian, many of her phrases and things she mentions might be a little less relatable, however, I hope it doesn't discourage you from reading her books because after all she's a scientist and regardless her religious beliefs, she also shares very valuable scientific information that can be extremely helpful for someone who is trying to become a better person. Also, if you are very visual, I recommend watching her cds, which will show images of everything she explains about how the brain and the mind works.

Dr. Leaf breaks down the way the brain works and creates memories and thoughts, and explains how we can work within our own brains to rewire them from toxicity to health in 12 main areas of our lives. This is vital! I now feel the freedom to throw out a lot of other books on healing and self-help that were good but didn’t quite scratch the itch... this truly scratches every itch and, best of all, it’s written in basic, clear writing.

This book is a must-read, and I recommend taking the time to go through all of her exercises for 21 days and rewire your brain! I read the content but since this is a library book I ordered myself a physical copy so that I can take 21 days to do the toxic thought detox.

Very interesting book with a lot of details about how your brain works in a way that makes it understandable. Author doesn't really think you should used medication for mental health issues unless it is absolutely essential and uses research to show how changing your thinking should improve your mental thought processes and effects on the rest of your body. Not sure I agree with this coming from healthcare background.

Really good book on your thought life and how to examine it both spiritually and from a natural health perspective. She gives great tips on handling toxic thoughts and being mindful of stress and the effects it has on your body and life in general. It’s a very practical book too. I enjoyed it. Some of it was a little over my head (like the more in depth scientific terms etc) but a lot of it was useful and beneficial for normal daily life application.
