Crea lives in upstate New York with her dog and husband. She has been writing since grade school, when her second grade teacher had her class keep writing journals. She has a habit of creating secondary, and often time tertiary, characters that take over her stories. When she can't fall asleep at night, she thinks up new scenes for her characters to act out. This, of course, is how most of her meant-to-be-thrown-away characters tend to end up front and center - and utterly swoon-worthy! Don't ask her how many book boyfriends she has...
When not writing, Crea is an avid reader. Her TBR pile is several hundred books high (don't even look at her kindle wish list or the unread books on her tablet). Sometimes, she enjoys crafting; sometimes, exploring nature; sometimes, traveling. Mostly, she enjoys putting her characters on paper and breathing life into them. Oh, and sleeping. Crea loves to sleep!
You know that, I do like to read about broken boys and how they come together 🥰 I knew something was up with Kairo and why he was so shit towards his family, I kinda recognized myself in him 😥 Malcolm was such a good match to him, enjoyed their dynamic too well.
It’s timeeeeee! At long last we finally get Kairo’s story. Not gonna lie, I really felt for him. I can understand why he’s been so prickly. That is until Malcom walks in and slowly takes down all of Kairo’s defenses.
Malcom was perfect for Kairo. I love that he saw him for who he was and realized what Kairo needed. He helped him come out of his shell without forcing it, which is what Kairo truly needed. Their connection was truly beautiful. Malcolm took such good care of Kairo and that was something that he really needed after feeling like he wasn’t worth it for most of his life. Kairo was so good to those around him and I loved how he was with Maria and Lucy. And his conversation with Jalon at the end was so so needed,
I received a copy from the author and am voluntarily sharing my honest opinion.
Another Van Doren book, don’t have to tell me twice. I love this series. And we are back at it with insight into Kairo, finally
Who better to bring this man into the light than Malcolm, brought back from the ranch by Voss, friend to Azlan, presumably dead by his family, can he find out why Kairo keeps his family at arms length and reach him.
Kairo, snarky with his family, finally letting a select few, Noaz, see him, lets in his found family, and his chosen family L and her mom, wants more than anything to let go of that childhood pain of nothing.
Kairo is for sure one of my fav Crea Reitan books. Hands down.
Whenever I saw Kairo in the other books he was an a-h0le, but I always felt drawn to him in an inexplicable way. I am so glad I finally got to read his story, get to meet the real him.
Kairo van Doren is one of those characters that deserve all the love in the world. Not because he went through something deeply traumatic or whatnot, no.. because he was overlooked all his life. He was left behind. His needs were always secondary to any others and I truly understand where he is coming from.
I am so glad Crea didn't give him a tragic story, choosing instead to give him a real one. Sometimes life hardens us just by being real, and this is exactly what happened here.
Malcolm was the perfect partner for Kairo. He brought to the surface all those needs Kai has in a way that didn't felt forced, he was just there. He gave K the space he needed to come out of his shell on his own terms. I love him for that. They were perfect for each other.
Kairo needed someone who will see him and not run away, Malcolm needed someone to take care of, so, yeah, they truly werw perfect.
I am so glad we got to see Kairo and Jalon have that heart to heart at the end. I feel like Jalon was given a shty hand in life, and acknowledging his shortcomings for sure wasn't an easy task, but he did it so Kairo can have that closure and finally understand that he is loved and wanted. I am glad it was Jalon who reaced out first, this will help with the new chapter in Kairo's life and I am so glad for that. All of them deserve happiness, and Kai getting his HEA is one of those moments when I am reminded once again that there is someone out there for all of us. One day we will all get our HEA.
10/10. 5 stars are not enough. I cried too much reading this book for it to be just 5 stars. Kairo made me emotional in a way that I didn't expect.
Can't wait for the audiobook, I will listen to it on repeat for sure given how much I loved the book.
I picked up Kairo right after finishing Arath Van Doren’s book, and it felt like the series had been building toward this one.
If you’ve met Kairo in previous installments, you know him as the sharp tongued, standoffish, sometimes outright abrasive member of the family, the guy who keeps everyone at arm’s length with his thorny exterior. This book flips that on its head in the best way, (and after Lorne I think he might be my favourite Van Doren.)
The story follows exactly what the description teases at…. Malcolm walks into Kairo’s world (and office) completely unfazed by the walls and barbs. He sees through the armor almost immediately and starts gently (and sometimes not so gently) dismantling it. What unfolds is a slowburn MM romance heavy on emotional vulnerability, hurt/comfort, and the kind of deep trust that doesn’t come easily, especially for someone like Kairo, who’s carrying serious childhood wounds and a bone deep fear of never been chosen first.
I went in not particularly liking him based on earlier appearances. By the end, I was fully invested. The author did a great peeling back the layers to show why he is the way he is. The moments where his softer, protective side peeks through, especially with those that aren’t family by blood (both a chosen family) hit hard. It’s so satisfying watching him learn it’s okay to be cared for.
Malcolm (we met him in another Van Doren book) He’s the steady, patient force Kairo desperately needs. His own baggage from the “Creaverse” adds a little more to this story. Now I love a little DDLG/GB and caretaker/Daddy kink dynamics feel real rather than forced. The way he challenges Kairo without pushing too hard, and the quiet persistence, made their connection so swoony.
The “I have to push you away to protect my heart” phase is painful in the best way, and the reconciliation/rebuilding was definitely not easy. It balances the spice, sweetness, and darker Van Doren style plot threads nicely.
This series does enjoy its crossovers and updates on the growing found family. It slots in well without requiring you to have read every prior book, (though context definitely helps.)
It’s classic Crea Reitan, steamy, emotionally intense, with some darker themes and content warnings you should check. The pacing is slower in the emotional buildup, which worked for me.
This one surprised me by making me genuinely love Kairo. If you enjoy MM romances with prickly characters who get the gentle (yet firm) handling they need, and stories about breaking down walls to find real connection, this delivers.
It’s a solid addition to the Van Doren world, it’s tender, spicy, and healing in places I didn’t expect.
Highly recommend for series fans or anyone who loves a good hurt/comfort redemption stories.
I always love the author’s notes at the beginning of the book.
We met Malcolm Confringo in Voss where he had been through trauma, and was captured as a target by sick people who wanted to hunt. He was the one who kept Voss’ boyfriend alive. And of course, we met Kairo Van Doren as the dickhead of the family.
Well, let me tell you Kairo is in essence not quite the dickhead that we met! While the van Dorens are known for their wealth, power, and luxury, Kairo lives in an old apartment and takes care of the people around him. Chicago is Kairo’s town, his town is under attack by masked men, the American gestapo, to clean up the city, orders from above, from the fuckhead who’s destroying the US.
The family is aware of Kairo’s absence, in person and in mind. He became hostile and doesn’t want anyone’s help. Jalon, the oldest brother, is concerned and asks Malcolm to visit him.
When Kairo meets Malcolm, he wants to dislike him, but the huge man is just very likeable. Malcolm pierces right through Kairo’s armor. Good Boy is just one of Malcolm’s endearments for Kairo. Read for yourself what Malcolm has in mind for Kairo. What followed was downright intense; Kairo didn’t stand a chance against Malcolm. Oh boy you’ll love watching them, it’s everything. Those sky-high walls are slowly and carefully coming down. Showing his real self wasn’t easy, explaining his feelings was even more difficult.
But, there’s more going on in this story, you really have to read it yourself.
This was a very intense story. Feelings are all over the place. I loved the super focus on Malcolm and Kairo, their dynamic was overwhelming, their chemistry off the charts. The family is, of course, present. The conversations are insightful, my heart was happy for Kairo. It’s all quite captivatingly written, I read it in one sitting. This was another wonderful addition to the Van Doren series
Eek! I've wanted to read Kairo's story since we met him in one of the previous Van Doren books, and his story did not disappoint. We finally get an explanation for why he's such a complete asshole AND get to learn a bit more about Malcom - who we meet in Voss's book on the human hunting farm. And while I don't think that the reason behind his dick behavior necessarily warrants how he's acted since he was much younger, I honestly couldn't help but melt when you learn about his true nature. Kairo is kind of a big teddy bear who loves very fiercely. He's just erected very high walls and as it turns out, Malcolm is just the person to tear them down. The spice is definitely better than we've seen in the last several installments of the Van Doren series, with elements of baby girl/good boy and spice mixed in with hurt/comfort. There's a look into a whole "daddy" dynamic, but it was very brief and honestly a little too repetitive when it did happen. But damn, all the scenes were pretty freaking hot. And the dynamic presented wasn't what I was expecting the story to be and it was pleasantly surprising!
I really liked the story, but I do wish it would have been longer. It's established why Kairo has been acting how he has and he vows to work out his behavior. There's a scene that is the start of him repairing his relationship with Jalon and maybe a sort of start with Noaz, but I would have liked to have seen more of him repairing his relationships with his family and what that looks like maybe on a slightly longer term scale. We could have seen more spicy scenes that way too. But it was still good and I definitely recommend reading this one!
This author completely ruined Kairo, and in doing so, pretty much spoiled the entire Van Doren series for me.
Kairo was introduced in earlier books, and I was genuinely excited to finally read his story. Instead, we were given a whiny, clingy, insecure weakling who bore little resemblance to the confident, formidable Van Doren brothers we'd come to know. He wasn't written as a little or even as a submissive partner. He was written as a caricature, with traits that felt less like a believable personality and more like the author's apparent contempt for stereotypically feminine characteristics projected onto him. Baby girl? Really? Even the attempted explanation in the book made no sense.
What made it even more frustrating was the relationship dynamic. Malcolm takes no responsibility for betraying Kairo's trust, yet somehow Kairo is the one groveling, apologizing, and begging for forgiveness as though he alone was at fault. It was infuriating to read and made the romance feel completely unbalanced.
At this point, I've had enough. I'm done reading this author. I keep giving them chance after chance after chance. I said in a previous review that the only consistent thing about this author is their inconsistent ability to write a genuinely satisfying story. Unfortunately, this book only reinforces that opinion.
What a disappointing way to waste a character with so much potential. And thusly tarnish the whole Van Doren series.
Kairo’s turn! I’ve been looking forward to his story for a while. Kairo has come off as prickly and a jerk through a lot of eyes. Though in recent books, it looked like everyone was starting to realize something. That he isn’t what he appears. And he may be hiding who he is behind a very tall wall. But no one has been successful getting past his defenses. Until Malcolm. Malcolm is a survivor of a very messed up game. He owes the Van Dorens for getting him out of there and they’ve helped him give him a new purpose. So when Jalon asks Malcolm to go to Chicago and see if he can help Kairo a bit, he goes. But mostly because he is very curious about Kairo himself. He may have heard different things about Kairo, but he won’t judge until he gets there. And to his surprise and delight, Kairo feels like his. Now to prove it to him. To earn his trust and show him that Malcolm sees everything he is hiding about himself. And that Malcolm can take care of him, be there for him… if he lets him. I loved this story! It was so great to finally know more about Kairo and see the big heart he desperately hides. And Malcolm is absolutely perfect for him. This was just a great story all around!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
“He deserves to smile and to accept that someone is here for him.” - Malcolm
“I’m screaming insanely because if he leaves, I may fall apart entirely.”- Kairo
Kairo has always seemed grumpy and does not want to be around his family, a mystery. But it turns out that he just needed someone outside his family (that he shared so much history with) to be a constant presence and that was Malcolm. Malcolm has been through a lot in the last year and he is welcomed into the family after he spent a lot of time with Brek and Voss. He is the perfect person to really get to know the real Kairo. Kairo does a lot for other people and he's actually a very sweet guy with a big soft heart. Especially to Maria and Lucy. Malcolm saw a part of him that his family doesn't know about. I love how gentle and patient Malcolm is with him while also keeping him accountable to his actions and the feelings of others. He deserves that, They are so good together. The conversation between Jalon and Kairo is so beautifully written and was so necessary for their relationship. What a personal growth! This whole book totally surprised me and is absolutely a 5 star book for me. My only complaint is that I wish it was longer.
Kairo Van Doren, ruthless, cold, unfeeling, and the outsider to his own family. He neither wants nor needs anyone. Malcolm is still dealing with his own dark corners, trying to put his pieces back together. His life forever changed after being hunted for sport and killing his way out of it. Jalon asks Malcolm to go to Chicago to supervise an arms shipment. Malcolm didn’t expect to want to stay, his reaction to Kairo overpowering and intense. Of all the strange characters in the Van Doren universe (and there’s a multitude to choose from), Kairo is definitely the the last one I ever thought I’d like so this book was a nice surprise.
Some Van Doren bloodletting was to be expected but what I didn’t expect was the humanity Kairo extended to strangers. Giving them a better life than they ever hoped to have. Lucy was a wonderful character and showcased just how human Kairo really was.
I sort of expected Malcolm to be more hardened from his ordeal in the woods. I think giving him Kairo was the authors way of apologizing for what she put him through.
I liked this book. Full of angst, blood, and hotness but still basically a soft love story.
Review Copy requested and reviewed on behalf of OMGReads.
I just really know these two will break up in half a year...tops. --- I really enjoyed this, until I didn't.
I hated the end. I disliked Malcoms demeanor. We learned that he knew that he did something to scratch on the trust that Kairo gave him. Yes he was right, but what I hated the most, was that he lets Kairo grovel and doesn't even once aknowledge to Kairo, that he KNOWS that he shattered Kairo's trust.
Instead he puts "Threats" to the relationship aka "that cannot happen again, I will not play games with you". In general, yes this is fair. No one likes to play games. But for someone who allegidly (because I'm not so sure about that.) knows what Kairo needs, he puts a lot of pressure onto him. He expects Kairo to change immediately. After 38 years of life.
Instead of giving him a secure attachement (WHAT KAIRO NEEDS) in saying "I won't leave you again, instead we will both take a step back in future and talk about it when we both calmed down." He basically threatens "If you do this again, I'm gone." to someone with abandonment issues.
Yikes. This kind of destroyed the whole book for me...
I didn't think I would learn to like Kairo, let alone love him, but Reitan did the impossible and completely turned my way of thinking around. With the glimpses we've had previously of Kairo, I didn't think he was the type to be able to be redeemed, or to be understood - I definitely didn't think that he would be one able to find love. But then Malcolm came along, and it 100% was for the better.
To say I was shocked at what a good guy Kairo is under it all, too, would be putting it mildly. I won't give spoilers, but the face he puts forward to the rest of the Van Doren's is just that - a face to hide behind. He really is a good guy deep down, and the more I read, the more my own dislike slowly chipped away. He genuinely has a heart of gold; he just can't help but last out at his family.
So glad to see Malcolm back in the series! I had hoped that we hadn't seen the last of him, and knowing the Creaverse, I knew the liklihood of him returning was high - but having him fall for Kairo? Perfection, honestly. I don't think anyone else would have been able to tame that particular Van Doren.
I really enjoyed Malcolm's persistence with Kairo, and that this story does take place over such a long period of time. I love that Malcolm was slowly able to break down Kairo's walls, even making it so that he asked for what he wanted or needed when the time was right.
Another great entry in the Van Doren line, and I can't wait for more of the Creaverse (esp. Daddy Jalon's story!)
Thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity. These are my honest thoughts that I have provided voluntarily.
It’s not often you have characters that feel so close to who you are yourself. Did I ever expect Kairo to be that character?Throughout the entire van Doren series, which I love deeply, I never expected the -insert bad word here- to be that character. But he was and this broken man healed a little part in me. I love characters that make you feel seen. And when they find someone who sees them and takes the time to heal them, now that just melts me completely. Kairo was always distant throughout his appearances in the Van Doren books. Standoffish and a bit of an unpleasant person all together. The way Malcolm sees through him so fast and gives him exactly what he needs, that man is amazing. The little quips he has for Kairo, how he breaks down Kairo’s walls, I could have read many more chapters of that! I love the Van Doren men and their ever growing family. Throw in the plots that Crea comes up with to accompany their love story and it’s a solid win every time!
I was excited to read this book as we have gotten glimpses of Kairo, throughout the series, the grumpy brother of jalon who seems to dislike everyone. This man was so misunderstood and I loved that we got to see that and the underlying cause. Malcolm is the man who brings him back into the life of the living, Malcolm has seen hell and been through unimaginable trauma himself from the Hunt. Now working for the Van Dorens he is sent to check in on Kairo, from the first interaction he knew there was more to the man then hs personna he shows is family. I loved everything about this story, how Malcolm pushes Kairo out of his comfort zone and gives him the physical touch he has been craving and so much more. It was truly heartwarming seeing Kairo open up and finding out what made him act the way he does with his family. Devoured it in one sitting. I was given this book as an ARC for my honest review.
Baby Girl, Good Boy & Daddy Hurt / Comfort Caretaking Healing Dark Romance
Obsessed. Absolutely obsessed with this.
I have been waiting for Kairos story. I always wondered what made Kairo so angry and combative.
Ughh these two were everything. Ughh Malcolm was everything. Slowly showing Kairo he can be trusted. He just kept showing up. I loved all the little things Malcolm did for Kairo.
Kairo just wanted someone to simply choose him, just him, ughh my heart I freaking loved this.
I just wanted to hug Kairo.
Kairo and Lucy… eek my heart. This was everything I wanted and more for Kairo.
This was filled with healing and I loved every second of it. I am so happy that kairo is happy now.
And daddy Jalon, ughh I cannot wait for his book!
I love this world Crea Reitan has created. The Van Doren world is everything.
↓↓ Oh fuck yeah. Kairo and Malcolm. I have wanted more on Kairo since his grumpy was was first introduced and Malcolm since he was introduced in Voss.
Anytime Kairo has appeared in other books, I've wanted to throat punch the hell out of him. He was such an ass but I figured that based on Crea's characters, there had to be a reason.
This man, this grumpy ass of a man, has a secret heart of gold. The things that he does for his city makes me ooey gooey warm and happy inside. He protects his heart and fear of rejection the only way he knows how, with anger.
Malcolm was the perfect and I mean that, he was the perfect person to love Kairo and bring him out of his shell. He pushed Kairo past his limits which he absolutely needed but he was also patient, kind, gave him his own choices and most of all, he picked him over everyone and everything every time.
This was everything I hoped it would be and then some. I love the Van Dorens and hope this series/world never ends.

I ended up reading Arath and Kairo in the wrong order, but that's my bad, meaning when I got around to Arath, Kairo was back to his usual self before he met Malcolm, and wow did Malcolm make his presence known when it came to Kairo.
We met Malcolm in one of the previous books, Voss, and he was actually one of the guys rescued from the hunts that were taking place, so it was nice to see him again and find out where his life had led him since his rescue.
Throughout the series, Kairo has honestly not been my favourite person at all. He's abrasive, bordering on rude and not very nice to his family, but by the end of this story, I was rooting for him to get his happy ever after. He has a really good story arc from start to finish, but you'll have to read the book yourself to see exactly how that goes down.
I had a feeling when we got Kairo’s story, he would be one of the softest MMCs in the VD bunch, and in so many ways, I wasn’t wrong. He always seemed to feel so intensely. He was standoffish with his family, but he way he was so interested in the new babies and wanted to know them spoke to my heart. It seemed he desired but feared connection. Jalon threw Malcolm into his life. Malcolm, who had already been through something horrific, is helping with VD work while also trying to piece together what remains of a future that has all but written him off. The connection between the two men emphasized their soft spots in a world that didn’t show them kindness. This is still a story that showcases the dark side of VD, but you absolutely see a side of these two that everyone can love and celebrate. If you’ve been on the fence about Kairo, don’t hesitate to pick this one up.
Gah when I tell yall I've BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!!! I just knew there had to be more to the grumpy Van Doren than we have seen in other books. Kairo was mean, grumpy and sometimes downright cruel to those around him. Leave it to Malcolm to break down those walls and get to the bottom of it.
When Malcolm blows into Kairos life, the man tries so hard to keep Malcolm out and to not let him get too close. Kairo doesn't let anyone get too close because of some unresolved issues. And boy will those issues break your heart when they come to light. Kairo just needed someone to love all of him and prove to him that's he's worth sticking around for. And Malcom is just the man for the job.
There's push and pull, sweater moments, angst, and of course plenty of spice. Great addition to this wild family.
I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest review.
Now Kairo so misunderstood. That Malcolm sees right through it on the very first day. I like how Kairo open up to Malcolm only. But he’s very possessive just like every other Van Doren. But more in my opinion because he wants to be the center of Malcolm‘s entire world in attention. And that he’s also really trying to redeem himself. Also started opening up his family. From Malcolm’s you see him trying to live after everything he’s been through. He also is loving and caring partner because he knows what his partner needs right away. Both together have an amazing power dynamic. And it shows just how much trust Malcolm and Kairo have with each other. And you’re also getting to know more of the families backstory and more about Jalon. I can’t wait to read more of this family.
This is Kairo's story. If you've read the rest of the Van Doren series, you know that he's the brother/uncle with a chip on his shoulder who acts like a jerk & won't let anyone close. In comes Malcolm, who we meet in Voss's book. He's already survived a horrible life altering experience, which ended with him staying with the Van Doren's at their main home/compound. Malcolm is sent to Chicago (Kairo's area) to see if he can get close to Kairo and keep an eye on things there. Kairo is very hesitant, but Malcolm keeps showing up and being there. We get to see the softer side of Kairo in this book and understand more where his issues stem from. There's definitely some ups and downs, but overall the story is about them finding love and healing. Would definitely recommend.
I always knew I’d love Kairo. I have been waiting for his story since the first book he appeared in. I loved everything about their love story until the last 40 pages. I was torn between a 3 star and 4 star simply because I was SO disappointed in Malcolm. While he may not have been wrong, he never once acknowledged the hurt that he caused. Then him telling Jalon stuff too, really changed my opinion about him. I stuck with 4 because I truly loved the direction Crea took with Kairo. This book did a great job bringing his personality and the reasons he is the way he is to life. Not to mention Crea is just a great writer.
Kairo has been seen as the mean, rude, jerky individual from this series. We know he is keeping something close to his chest and pushing people away with his attitude, but we aren’t quite sure what it is. Kairo just needed someone to break down his walls and help him with his pain and see that he could be loved. Enter Malcolm, who doesn’t stop until Kairo finally lets him in. I loved seeing these two interact and watching Kairo trust someone enough to let them into his deepest, darkest thoughts.
Ever since I first met Kairo, I’ve been hoping to read his story someday.
The time has finally come, and I’m overwhelmed! I knew that behind his rough exterior lay a deeply wounded soul.
Malcolm manages to see through his wall, revealing Kairo’s true heart to us. I’m so happy that Crea Reitan has gifted us with this sensitive and incredibly emotional story! Kairo is one of those books that will stay with me for a long time.
This book is part of the Van Doren world and we finally get to see what Kairo is all about. In the past books he was aggressive, mean, and surly to his family. He wasn’t such a nice guy but I knew there had to be a reason. Family trauma can manifest in many ways. I’m glad Malcolm was the perfect guy for him. He showed him he didn’t need to be that way and come to find out Kairo cared deeply about people. This story was more tame than the rest of the Van Doren series, but I think Kairo deserved some sweetness.
Kairo just overtook every single Van Doren and became my favorite. I knew his redemption was going to be a good one based on how mean he was in the previous books and this book didn't disappoint at all. Since meeting Malcolm he has always been a protector and obviously that's what Kairo needed in his life. I loved seeing the softer side of Kairo that we saw when he held any of the babies in the family. This has definitely become my favorite book in the series.
I have been ready for this one since he was introduced. I knew he had some issues, and he wasn't just awful to be awful. I felt so bad for him. I honestly did not want this to end. I love how Noaz is with Kairo as well. They may not be close, but Noaz has tried. I loved Malcolm getting a happy ending as well. I loved him in Voss's book, so I am glad he gets joy as well after all the trauma. My only complaint is that I wish this was longer. I want more of them both.
Kairo has intrigued me from the very beginning. At first, he seems very standoffish and doesn’t seem to fit in. Malcolm is determined to find out why, and I’m so glad he is!
What starts out as a job turns into so much more. Malcolm not only helps break down the walls Kairo has built, but he also helps him rebuild new ones. When Kairo’s trust is broken, it takes him a while to come around again, but when he does, Malcolm is there to catch him.
