There is a reason I have been hyping this book up for months. Now after reading the ARC copy. I am at a loss for what to say. Those who know me, know I am annoying and DO NOT STOP TALKING. I have zero filter. But now, I don't know where to begin. So I'll ramble my feelings and hope it comes across ok.
Attention to detail in this, is impeccable. Illene offers up her sources and research in the beginning of the book which shows the time and effort that has been poured into this. ATOGAF is fiction at it's core, but the historical accuracy has been educational for me and wholly immersive. I found myself questioning if I could do what Grace has done? Would I survive if this happened to me? Could I use or eat that? It's masterful in how the facts have been woven in. You know by the extensive content, that the author has fact checked every word and detail crafted into this novel, and enjoyed the process.
The genre is somewhat a niche one. It's Time Travel, it's historical, it's dark and gritty romance, it's political. If there was more of a fantasy element (some magic at play) it would be on the epic scale in my opinion. It's not aimed at the mainstream, but certainly, this book carries enough in it, for most readers to be gripped.
The FMC is likeable. She is so strong willed and determined. Her history is not a nice one. She differs from female characters in recent books as she isn't whiney. Yes she has emotions, but in no way does she rant and rave about it for half a chapter. She cracks on, like we all have to do in life. I found her really relatable and likeable. And you know what else? She doesn't body shame herself and then say how sexy and curvy she is in the next breath!
Some issues raised in this, are still prevalent today. The book blends Ancient Roman culture and Todays seamlessly as Grace is from the present day. It does make you stop to think about how little we have come as a race. Have we changed at all much in 2000 years?
I really could go on forever about this. Illene is an author of dark fantasy romance, but in no way has she used historical facts to romanticise the traumatic things that are in the past. They're just present in the time period of the story. The romance element is light and not part of the plot. The book is better for it, in teasing us with verbal sparring and tension.
For lovers of time travel, for admirers of Gladiators, for people who yearn to know more about history. For those who love a found family, raw emotions and aren't afraid to shed a tear over a fictional person. Give this story a try.

If you've never read anything by Susan Illene, you are truly missing out.
She creates such complex characters, worlds, and situations. Plus, the MFC is 28!!!!
You never know what the outcomes will be, the tears you might shed, nor the chaos that will be unleashed.
While I do not want to give anything away, I imagine, if you liked TVD, The Wolf King, Xena, and Outlander, you will likely love this. It has so many elements, twists, and growth you don't expect. Its not quick either. You are not watching some teenager take down the 1000 year old warrior after 3 days of training. You are watching a character train, grow, and evolve!

What happens when a 21st-century accountant from Kansas suddenly finds herself in the middle of a gladiator fight in 1st-century Rome? Well, thank heaven she grew up on a farm, and is not as athletically challenged as I am, because my own survival chances in that arena would have been approximately zero.
I loved that her physical transition into a fighter took months and didn’t happen overnight, as so often happens in romantasy. Her body has to adapt, but her mind has to undergo an even greater transformation as she learns to survive in a world so completely removed from everything she knows. I especially appreciated how authentically that world came across, with all the historical detail woven into everyday gladiator life. Having studied ancient Roman history for a few terms, I recently visited an exhibition on gladiator life and really appreciate the groundwork that went into this. Impressive!
A love triangle, a friendship that exists somewhere between life and death, and the very understandable daily struggle with hygiene in ancient Rome had me hooked.
And then there are our MMCs: Remus, smelling of woodsmoke and pine, and Arack, smelling of sage and musk. I’m not completely sold on either of our MMCs yet, but maybe I’m secretly rooting for the tortured, mysterious Remus!
The overall story arc surrounding the why and how of the time travel is still very much at the beginning, and I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

After reading the blurb, I was instantly intrigued, but I can't say the book quite met my expectations.
Grace is freshly divorced and enjoying a vacation in Rome after leaving an emotionally abusive relationship when she suddenly time travels to ancient Rome, landing in the middle of the Colosseum. From that moment on, she has a difficult path ahead of her, and more than once, I felt that her reactions to certain situations contradicted her character or what had previously been established about her.
Throughout the book, I found the writing to be somewhat inconsistent. Certain parts felt awkward, especially some of the dialogue. I also felt that some descriptions were repetitive and, at times, unnecessary, particularly considering that there is a glossary included in the book. I appreciated the use of Latin names for the things that appear throughout the story, and I think the clothing items, for example, are described sufficiently when they are first introduced, which is great. However, later on, the plural form of a word would be used and then explicitly pointed out as being the plural form, which felt unnecessary.
There is also an event that happens around the middle of the book without much, if any, foreshadowing. It felt very sudden and came completely out of the blue.
What I really appreciated, from beginning to end, was the author's ability to keep me interested in the story despite all of my earlier complaints. It took me a while to become fully invested, but I was intrigued enough to keep reading. Some of the things that happen in the book were fairly easy to predict, but when it came to the overall plot, I felt like I was kept in the dark—and, honestly, I still do even after finishing the book. We get some answers, but I still can't quite figure out where the author is going with the story.
It honestly baffles me that, despite having such conflicting feelings about this book, the author managed to keep me wanting to read on. I don't think it's a bad book, but I do think it could have benefited from some additional editing and tightening.

I DID NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN and suddenly I was at the end wondering how it was already over. 😭
While there isn’t much spice, the sexual tension is absolutely THERE. The slow build, the aggressive banter, and the anticipation had me completely invested. And the FMC?! SHE IS BEING BUILT INTO SOMEONE WHO IS GOING TO BE SO. DAMN. BADASS and I am HERE FOR IT. 🔥
I really appreciated the historical context woven into the story. It was obvious that research went into creating the world, and I loved that this wasn’t simply a gory story about arena fights. Susan rocked creation of the characters, their histories and their relationships, which made me genuinely invested in what happens to everyone. When it did come to the fighting and training details… THEY ARE ON POINT. 👏🔥

I picked this one up because I’ve realized I really enjoy time travel/portal-type stories, but I was a little unsure about the ancient Rome setting. I’ve just never been particularly interested in Roman history, so I wasn’t sure how much I would enjoy a book that drops a modern woman right into the middle of it.
I was very pleasantly surprised because I ended up really enjoying this.
One of my favorite things was how easy it was to understand the historical setting even though I went into this knowing very little about Rome. There are obviously a lot of unfamiliar customs, terminology, and details about what life was like at the time, but they were explained naturally as Grace encountered them. I never felt like I was being handed a giant history lesson or an info dump. I found out afterward that the author has a history degree and a military background, which made a lot of sense because both the historical details and the training/fighting elements felt like things she’d put a lot of thought and research into.
There is a glossary in the back, which I didn’t discover until I finished. 😂 I really wish I’d known it was there because there were a few times I couldn’t remember exactly what a word meant and it would have been helpful to have while I was reading.
I really liked Grace, and I liked the friendships and side characters around her too. She’s originally from Kansas, which is a tiny thing, but as someone from Missouri, I always enjoy finding a Midwestern main character. 😂 There are also two male characters who seem like they’re going to become increasingly important as the series continues, and I have some suspicions about where all of that is heading, but I’m keeping those to myself.
This is the first book in a trilogy, and it definitely feels like the beginning of a larger story. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, but in a way that made me want to continue rather than leaving me frustrated.
I did have a couple of issues. Something fairly significant about Grace is revealed around the middle of the book, and it felt surprisingly abrupt to me. It seems like it’s probably going to be important to the larger story, so I almost wished there had been a little more groundwork leading up to it rather than having it suddenly appear.
I also thought a couple of the choices near the end felt slightly tacked on. The book had stayed almost entirely with Grace’s perspective, and then suddenly we get brief glimpses from other characters along with some of the steamier content. I’m not opposed to changing POVs, but because the book hadn’t really been doing that before, the change felt a little like an afterthought. The spicy scenes gave me a similar feeling. There aren’t many and they’re not overly graphic, but they seemed to show up rather suddenly near the end instead of feeling completely integrated into the rest of the book.
Those things didn’t take away much from my overall enjoyment, though. This was a really quick, easy read for me, and more importantly, I wanted to keep reading it. Considering I started out unsure whether I’d care about ancient Rome at all, that’s probably the biggest compliment I can give it.
I’m somewhere around 4.25–4.5 stars, which I’m rounding up to 5. I’m definitely planning to continue the trilogy because I want answers to several things this book has set up, and I’m very curious to see where Grace’s story goes next.

As a Classical Studies student, this book jumped out at me straight away, and it did not disappoint, not even close.
Susan has clearly done her research; every historical element feels considered and authentic. What I appreciated most is that she hasn't glorified or glamourised Rome and that period into something it wasn't. So much historical fiction sands down the brutality and complexity of the ancient world for the sake of spectacle, but this story resists that, and it's so much stronger for it.
The premise itself is such a brilliant hook. The FMC is a modern woman ripped back in time and given a brutal ultimatum: become a gladiator, or die. That stakes-first setup grabbed me immediately, and it never let go. Watching her navigate a world she has no context for (except for some history lessons from her mother), while trying to survive it, made for such a gripping read.
There's also a slow-burn love triangle running through it, with tension building between her and two very different characters. Nothing is rushed, the romance simmers in the background for most of the book, and it's only right at the end that things finally come to a head with one of them. It's the kind of slow burn that pays off exactly when I thought it should have

Honestly, this book took me through every emotion (tension, heartbreak, hope, anger, prode) sometimes all within a single chapter. And it never felt manipulative; it felt earned. That's the mark of genuinely skilled storytelling.
I am already counting down for the next book in the series. If this is the standard Susan is setting from book one, I have no doubt the sequel is going to be just as epic, if not more so.

Honestly, this book took me through every emotion (tension, heartbreak, hope, anger, prode) sometimes all within a single chapter. And it never felt manipulative; it felt earned. That's the mark of genuinely skilled storytelling.
I am already counting down for the next book in the series. If this is the standard Susan is setting from book one, I have no doubt the sequel is going to be just as epic, if not more so.
A must-read for anyone who loves historical fiction, Roman history, time-travel romance, or stories that don't shy away from showing history as it actually was.

Whenever asked where I would go if I could of anywhere in time I typically answer with Ancient Rome, it has always fascinated me and I am forever wanting to know Spartacus’ real name. When Susan talked about wanting to make a book where someone time traveled back to Ancient Rome I knew I needed that book in my life. It is so much better then I ever anticipated and it is quickly one of my favorite books (tied with The Realm of Zadrya series also from Susan). I helped beta read and even from the beta to the ARC so many small things where added that made it even better.
The level of research put into the book is astonishing and makes it so much more real having the FMC facing the challenges of that time period. I definitely could not handle the smell or hygiene they had in that time. I love the care and time it took to give us a glimpse into the past and how life would have actually been especially having all of today’s modern comforts.
Grace is a strong FMC that not only faced a lot of challenges in her modern life, but then gets thrown into one of the most difficult situations. She is forced to fight for her life constantly and learn how to survive in the wildly different time. She is such an incredibly strong character to face how she’s treated and still try to fight to have some basic decency. Additionally using her modern mathematical knowledge of accounting to her get out some potential trauma inducing situations.
There are two MMC options and as off book one we do not know who she will end up with. I have a clear side of which MMC I hope she ends up with. One of them is super shady feeling by the end, and the other definitely seems like he has no chance to get back into Graces good side. It is honestly a toss up on who she may end up with. Again I have my hopes of who it’ll be 👀

The side characters add so much to the story but either helping Grace cope with her new life or showing that there are plenty of challenges to overcome. Other gladiators help her training whether it’s willingly or being ordered to, they help her become a b*das* warrior. Her last fight scene is so epic and I love little details added to make it incredible.
The story definitely has a lot of dark, gritty and difficult moments how how many characters are treated, but it shows the strength they all have to make it through all they are put through. There is bit story element that definitely had me bawling and I was not prepared for 😭😭.
The twists that were added were perfect and soooo unexpected. The ending has the largest twist of revealing where/when Arack is from had my mind blown 🤯 and I really did not anticipate the twist at all.
Overall I freaking loved this book soooo much it is everything I needed and more from a time travel to Ancient Rome gladiator book. I need book 2 immediately, to bad we don’t have actual time travel to travel into the future to get the rest of the series.

Due to Mount Etna spewing out a hell of a lot of ash I coincidentally and unintentionally ended up in Rome whilst reading this which was quite amusing. A whirlwind by chapter two wowee. I think it was an interesting concept and clearly very well researched (I say this like an expert but my knowledge comes almost entirely from watching Spartacus lmao). I couldn’t get behind Grace as a character to begin with but I think round about the 30% mark I started to enjoy her a lot more! Found some of the chapter endings to be rather abrupt. Thoroughly enjoyed the Jack Sparrow quote. The fights were the highlight for me! Felt like watching an episode of Spartacus in my head. Okay actually…. Perhaps Remus was the highlight. No the fights. Maybe a bit of both.

This book was such a delight! It was refreshing and creative in the sense that it was different from many of the romantasy books currently out. I liked the time traveling aspect of the story as well as the mystery surrounding Arack’s and Remus’ backstory.
I was so impressed by the great lengths the author went through to depict accurate historical references to Ancient Rome. It’s different from other Roman inspired books in a way you can really appreciate.
The story moved at a steady pace allowing you to get to know the characters well. The slow burn is agonizing!!!! The yearning and tension is everything!!
I truly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend to anyone.

Have you ever been so obsessed with a story that it takes over everything, where all you want to do is keep reading and reading and never want it to end? Well, that’s exactly what this book is for me, a complete obsession!
Though can you blame me when it’s a cross between Outlander, Spartacus and Xena all in the one book? I think not.
We meet Grace, the FMC who is an accountant from Kansas. While holidaying in Rome after a messy divorce, she ends up landing smack bang in the Colosseum, in the middle of a gladiator match 2000 years into the past. Hello Ancient Rome!!
Between training for months on end to become a formidable gladiator at the Ludus Magnus (Gladiator school) and surviving the hygiene practices of the time (Ah no thank you), Grace finds herself surrounded by things she has only read and dreamt about in history books. I love Grace’s character, she’s strong willed and a fighter but is also highly adaptable to the ever-changing situations around her. I’m so excited to see where Illene takes her in the next book.
My favourite thing about this story though is the amount of historical research that went into this book which is shown at the very beginning in the author’s note. For example, did you know that gladiators would have to get their body hair plucked out one strand at a time? Or that they had to use a sea sponge on a stick after they went to the bathroom then clean it in vinegar? I had no idea of either of those things until I read this book, and let me tell you I am forever grateful of modern conveniences because GROSS, and there is no way I would survive being thrown back into that time, not even a little.🤣
As usual Susan Illene’s writing and worldbuilding is immersive, playful and energetic. She has created a story where everything flows together brilliantly, intertwining facts with fiction in a perfect balance. Be prepared for that ending though because I wasn’t, and now I need book two like tomorrow or better yet today!😁
Overall, this book is five stars and is now one of my top ten reads not just for this year but all together (remember when I said I was obsessed). With time travel, gladiators, slow burn romance and witty lines, this is a story you’re going to want to read!

I have been in love with this book since I opened it.
The characters, main and side, all have so much dimension that I felt like the book never fell flat. Susan makes you feel things for all her characters in this book, whether it’s empathy, annoyance, or sorrow.
I will say my favorite thing about this book is not only the banter, but Grace’s tenacity throughout the book. She constantly proves she will not be painted into a corner no matter the time period. I absolutely enjoyed A Time of Gladiators and Fate by Susan Illene.
The idea of a modern woman suddenly finding herself in ancient Rome, right in the middle of the Colosseum, was already enough to grab my attention. But throw in gladiators, time travel, dangerous alliances, and not one but TWO intriguing men, and I was completely sold.
Grace was such an interesting character to follow. She's thrown into a world where pretty much everything is against her and watching her navigate this completely unfamiliar and brutal reality was one of my favorite parts of the story. She's strong, stubborn, and not afraid to speak her mind, even when keeping her mouth shut would probably be the smarter choice. And honestly? I loved that about her.
I also really enjoyed seeing her growth throughout the book. Going from a woman trying to escape one difficult chapter of her life to someone who must fight for her very survival in a world she doesn't understand is such an intense journey. She's forced to adapt, to push herself beyond what she thought possible, and to discover just how much strength she has.
And can we talk about the setting?!
Ancient Rome, gladiator training, the Colosseum, politics, and the harsh reality of life during that time made the story feel so immersive. I loved how the historical details were woven into the plot while still leaving room for action, humor, and all the character moments that made me want to keep reading.
The contrast between Grace's modern perspective and the world she's suddenly thrown into also brought some entertaining moments. Her sarcasm and the culture clashes added a bit of humor to a story that can get dark, and I really appreciated that balance.
Now, let's talk about the men…
Because of course, we have TWO very different men catching Grace's attention, and I was curious to see how that would play out. One is the demanding gladiator trainer who pushes her to her limits, while the other is a mysterious and wealthy sponsor who seems to know much more than he's letting on.
The tension, the banter, the secrets… I love when a story makes you question the characters' intentions and keeps you guessing about who you can trust. And with both men bringing something different to the table, I'm curious to see how these relationships will develop in the next books.
A Time of Gladiators and Fate was such a fun and intense read, with an original premise, a strong heroine, an immersive historical setting, and just enough romantic tension to keep me invested. If you love time travel, gladiators, strong female characters, slow-burn romance, and stories where the main character must fight tooth and nail to survive, I recommend giving this one a chance.

It’s very clear that Susan Illene knows her Roman history because the level of detail in this was insane. Ancient Rome actually felt lived in rather than just being used as a cool backdrop for the story, and I loved seeing Grace trying to navigate being dropped into a completely different time period where basically everything she knows about society and how she should be treated no longer applies.
That being said, sometimes there was almost too much detail. There were points where it started to feel more like I was getting a Roman history lesson than reading a story and it pulled me out of it a few times. I appreciate the research because it clearly added a lot of authenticity, but I definitely think some of it could have been stripped back without losing that.
I really liked Grace as an FMC though. She was probably my favourite part of the book. I liked that she was capable and stubborn without suddenly becoming unrealistically good at everything just because the plot needed her to be. Watching her adapt to the situation she’d been thrown into and actually work to survive was really enjoyable.
And when I say slow burn… SLOWWWWW burn. This book said you will wait and you WILL deal with it 😭 I don’t necessarily mind that, but by the end I did feel like I’d spent all that time waiting for things to really kick into gear only for the payoff to fall a little flat.

This one didn’t hit like it could have. It felt over narrated and a bit immature. Grace’s past emotional trauma would have been more impactful with a couple well placed flash backs versus the over explanation of her internal thoughts to try to draw connections with the reader. She could have had a really empowering character arc if she embraced her role in the past that she was transported to but instead she hid in her comfort zone and somehow was always enabled to stay there. It felt like rather than rebuilding herself into a stronger woman and overcoming the hardships of Ancient Rome she just seemed to always find something that was too hard or she was unwilling to overcome.
The slow-burn romance love triangle also seemed underdeveloped. We could have had some really great broody moments from Remus or some sexually charged encounters. Instead we got these strange meetings where she’s both turned on but also offended? The banter was meant to be fun and flirty but missed the mark somehow. The lust with Arack seemed to be based out of a social debt rather than any attraction that came off the page.

We follow a woman who is sent back in time to Ancient Rome – into a world of gladiators, brutal arena fights, and a reality that definitely isn’t romanticized or made prettier than it was. And honestly, that was one of the things I enjoyed most about this story.
You can really tell that Susan Illene has done her research. The historical setting feels detailed, well thought out, and believable. It genuinely felt like being transported back to Ancient Rome, and the harsher realities of that time aren’t glossed over.
This is also a true slow burn, and the story takes its time allowing us to really get to know the characters. Not only the FMC, but also the people she fights alongside in the arena. I became so invested in some of them that this book actually had me close to tears at one point. 🥺
The romance builds very slowly, so the spice is only 🌶️, but for this particular story, I think it works really well.
Most of all, this felt fresh and different from so much of what I normally read. I haven't read many stories with this kind of setting and premise, and I loved getting something that felt genuinely new to me.

You can tell Susan put in a lot of time and research to try and make you feel as if you were the one dropped into Ancient Rome.
I will admit I did struggle for the first few chapters of the book as it was like information overload and made it feel quite slow(my comprehension isn’t exact great at the best of times never mind in a heavy info drop). The reminder of something’s throughout the book honestly helped my significantly with this.
Aside from that I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the fights, the fact the fmc had to train and work hard for what she achieved.
The friendships and other relationships with the fmc were extremely well written, I especially loved the potential 2 mmc‘s. I can’t wait to see where these relationships progress in the future.

How would you cope with traveling backward in time from your modern life to first-century Rome, where all the rules are different, with your wits, self-worth, and courage behind you? That's what Grace asks herself time and time again throughout this book.
I loved this book from start to finish. Grace was so funny throughout, using her knowledge and her sharp tongue while she navigated her new reality. The world-building and descriptions of her life in Rome - it's true what Grace says throughout the book: she only knows what she's seen in movies and books; now she got to experience that life firsthand - was so much fun to read. From her disastrous arrival, her first nights in the training school, to her first tournament, the story sweeps you up and doesn't let go until the last page.

I loved this book from start to finish. Grace was so funny throughout, using her knowledge and her sharp tongue while she navigated her new reality. The world-building and descriptions of her life in Rome - it's true what Grace says throughout the book: she only knows what she's seen in movies and books; now she got to experience that life firsthand - was so much fun to read. From her disastrous arrival, her first nights in the training school, to her first tournament, the story sweeps you up and doesn't let go until the last page.

Thank you for this ARC. I wasn't sure I'd like this as I'm not a fan of historical books usually but let me tell you, I WAS A HUGE FAN OF THIS. The way history and time travel are addressed was incredibly engaging and had me hooked.i also leaned a lot, too! I loved Grace's current time knowledge and how jarring going back in time was for her. Female friendships and finding who you are are prevailing themes. I think at this point, if Susan Illene writes a book, I will be reading it and it will never disappoint me. Her writing, world and character building, and enthusiasm for her craft shine in her work. I laughed, cried, and cheered while reading this book. I cannot wait for book 2!

It’s clear this book was fairly well researched, and the author did a really good job at seamlessly including explanations for words or items in the text. I initially felt a little unsure on the way the book started and about Grace as a character, but the more I read the more I grew to like her. I really enjoyed the friendships she formed with other characters and the descriptions of the fights were personally the highlight of the book, so incredibly gripping! Also, it’s impossible not to fancy Remus. I tried. And failed. Bring on book 2 (with more Remus and more fights 👀)?

Get ready for your new obsession! Spartacus plus Outlander plus Xenia Warrior Princess with heat and humor. You won’t be able to put it down. The pacing was perfect, the historical facts accurate but not overwhelming, and the perfect blend of characters.
Having accidentally traveled to First Century Rome, Grace’s mouth gets her into trouble more times than I can count. But she’s determined to survive in this dangerous time until — or if — she can get back home. While she has just been liberated from her toxic ex-husband, she now has men controlling her again, and she just does not take that lying down — although, there are some she would lie down for.
I can’t even talk much about the main male characters as that would spoil the story! But there are two, they are muscled, they are of authority, and they both want Grace. However, that’s where their similarities end. One is mysterious, helpful, and protective. The other is demanding, dangerous, and loves pushing Grace’s buttons. The witty banter is delicious!
You will even fall in love with the side characters. Susan does a fabulous job painting the full picture. You will laugh, cry, laugh again, and ball your eyes out over and over. Heck, at one point I was laughing as I was crying!
The ending will completely blow your mind! This is a trilogy, so I cannot wait to get more of Grace’s story and what’s to come for her next. Thank you, Susan, for letting me be a beta reader and listening to my suggestions for MORE HEAT! It was perfect.

I feel we're only getting started with the world building the complexity of the characters, I can't wait to read the next one.

A great read for those seeking an earth based, historically minded, fantasy. Plenty of tough moments and character building scenes, mentally and physically (can I get abs just by reading about others getting them? #wishfullthinking). Have you had one of those books that hits all your emotions, provides a fresh storyline, resonates with you on "What would I do in this situation", requires you to google images from history for a deeper understanding, and leaves you wanting so much more?
I loved this book and dread waiting for the next one especially with how it ended with two key character POV's. It threw me off at first, but it also let's the readers imagination go wild with possibilities on the future once you see the internal intent and conflict.
I appreciated the supporting characters and team conradere opposed to always having one stabbing others in the back. There was none of the mental and verbal diarrhea from the main characters taking away from the story or dragging it out either.
I really enjoyed the historical aspect of the story wrapped around engaging characters. Ms Illene did a brillant job with teaching and conveying many key points of history from the first century (AD). Many key events discussed in the book happened in the first century after Jesus died, Pompeii fell and the Jewish temple was destroyed.
Very refreshing for a avid reader, and I'm grateful for the advanced copy from a favored author who never fails to engage and captivate me.
I do recommend all her series, because the subject and characters are always unique and keep you engaged.

I got an ARC for this (thank you!) and I must say it was different than what I’d normally read.
It was interesting reading about the Roman era and how the different genders were treated (NOT appealing for slaves and women of course 🤦♀️!!)
My favourite part of the book would definitely be the beginning with the time travel.. I do love a good portal storyline. I also loved how resilient Grace was.
However I think the story dragged a bit for me…. Nothing really got solved or happened and Grace is no closer to getting any answers on how to get home.
And the love interests…. I always did feel like Arack was a bit off though I also don’t agree with how Remus handled things.. I’m not a fan of insulting someone you claim to like and trying to destroy their self esteem. Would I read the next book? Probably because I definitely want to see what happens in the end!

A Time of Gladiators and Fate is a story with a unique premise, a strong root-for-able FMC, and enough momentum through the last half of the book to make me eagerly await Book #2 (2027!).
In a word, this book was refreshing. It starts off fun, a bit light-hearted, and in the middle of ancient Rome. Illene doesn't try too hard to do a ton of expository atmospheric work, which I appreciate, but she really doesn't have to: she's telling a fun and original story right from the beginning. What I enjoyed the most was the strength of the FMC. Particularly for a book in this genre, I appreciated that Grace was formidable from page 1, even if her growth and rebirth are load-bearing themes throughout the book. We didn't have to spend 350 pages to finally see her stand up for herself.
What felt particularly skillful was how the tone subtly shifted as the story progressed. The book begins with some delightfully wild plot assumptions and a sense of humor about its own premise, but gradually settles into something more reverent and pensive. Without losing the momentum of the story, Illene begins asking more serious questions about what strength looks like in context, in a world that isn't always fair or kind, and after experiences that fundamentally change a person.
Grace's progression and growth are similarly patient. Once Illene establishes the story, she gives Grace's experiences the weight they deserve rather than rushing toward transformation. The payoff at the end is that much more satisfying because we've been given the time to experience that progression alongside her. When something important happens, Illene takes care to show it from Grace's perspective rather than telling us about it in a throwaway paragraph. With a balanced hand, she conveys Grace's determination to survive without reducing strength to simply being unbreakable.
Fans of plot-driven romantasy will devour this. There are definitely darker elements, so check your trigger warnings at the beginning.

This was an interesting and fantastic read. I love how you get some history about gladiators woven into the story. There’s heartache, sorrow, a strong found family to rely on and the banter was so good! I was hooked right from the start.

I loved the concept of this book. Greco-Roman mythology and history have always fascinated me, so the chance to read about a modern-day woman sent back to first-century Rome and forced to join a ludus (gladiator school) to earn her freedom had me screaming, YES PLEASE.
The author does not shy away from the indignity those of lesser status faced in those days, nor does she hide the brutality of the gladiator lifestyle. She also makes an effort to keep the setting as historically accurate as possible, including the hygiene options available to our main character. While Grace does start with a little leg up, having had a history teacher for a mother and not being entirely clueless about the world she finds herself in, we still see her struggle to adjust to her new time and her lowly position within it. She has to grow stronger, both physically and mentally, and by the end of the book we see her enter her death goddess phase.
The banter between Grace and the men in her new life, along with the modern-day references, gave me a Percy Jackson vibe (and I can't help it, I laughed out loud at "if only he'd had a ballroom"). The irreverence and sarcasm in Grace's character make what could have been a much heavier, more historically dense read into something lighter and more entertaining. We get the history and definitions we need as they become relevant to Grace's situation, but the book doesn't turn into a history lesson or spend pages immersing us in every detail of first-century Rome. At times, I could imagine this premise taking a more Outlander-like approach, but I'm not complaining about the direction the author chose to go.
The story is a fast, engaging read. There were a few times I felt some information - a detail, a definition, or what have you - was unnecessarily repeated, and the writing could have used another pass or so to really shine, but I truly enjoyed this book.
I laughed, I almost cried, and I felt invested in Grace's journey, as well as some of the side characters.
I also felt the love triangle was well done. I still don't know which of the potential love interests I want Grace to end up with, which is rarely an issue for me, lol, not that I'm complaining.
The overarching reason for her time jump certainly adds to the story. I won't divulge any spoilers here, but I do want to say I CALLED IT. You'll know what I mean when you get there. And I sincerely do want to know what happens next, and I want to learn the answers still hanging in the air by the end of the book. So I'll be waiting for the next book, for sure.
