Kevin Brophy called it “engrossing, authentic and important fiction”.
Song of the Curlew (ECG Press 2022) is about dreams, coming of age, community, love, and racism. It has been described by best-selling Young Adult author George Ivanoff as “an extraordinary book”.
Les has also written and directed short content: the short film, The Here Now (2023), about a woman who can’t escape her grief; The Other Side of Paradise (2021), about a man trapped in his own vengeance; The Abnorms (2020), which was shot entirely in lockdown, and plays with idea of an interdimensional invasion from demonic entities; and the concept trailer for Little Diva Rising (2019).
He’s currently working on a horror feature, Heritage, in conjunction with Glamm Productions.
He’s had four screenplays optioned, and a raft of unproduced screenplays place as finalists in over one hundred international competitions. His stories and articles have also been published extensively.
A lifetime writer, Les has a love of storytelling, and has always wanted to tell stories.

Review of advance copy received from Author
First published in 2018, August Falling has been published again this year as The Author's Cut, giving readers a new chance to experience this bittersweet story.
I really enjoyed this book. Even though it's not a love story, it shows us who we become as individuals and who we become when we are part of a couple. We all bring our own past, fears, and experiences into a relationship, and this book shows that very well.
One thing I liked was how the truth about August's sister was revealed slowly. The author did not tell us everything at once. Instead, we slowly discovered little pieces throughout the book, which made it feel more meaningful.
In this version, there is one page that really stood out to me. That page alone expresses August's feelings so well - the shock, the overwhelming emotions, the impossible situation, the feeling that it could not be true, the confusion… everything. It was a powerful moment that helped me understand what August was going through.
The book also made me think about acceptance. We can not change our partner's past, but we can choose how we respond to it. Loving someone means accepting that they have lived a life before they met us, with both happy and painful memories.
Julie was my favourite character. I admired her strength, kindness, and the way she kept moving forward even though she had been through so much.
I had mixed feelings about August. There were times when I understood why he acted the way he did, but there were also moments when I felt frustrated with him. His choices sometimes made it difficult for me to like him, even though I could see he was trying to heal.
I did not expect the book to end the way it did, but I actually liked the ending. It was not a typical happy ending, but it felt real and stayed in my mind. It made me wonder what would happen next for both Julie and August and where their lives would take them.

August is a good guy trying to rebuild his life after his divorce. He works in a call center- that’s bad enough really, but he can’t seem to find anyone or anything that makes him happy. He meets Julie, who’s fun and quirky. Can he move forward and be happy with her, or will he let the secret she has ruin everything?
You will root for August as he makes his way through his life while trying not to be an angry, anxious mess.
A thoughtful story about what happens when you stop judging people and finally figure yourself out. A must read.
