This anthology has twelve remarkably diverse stories of which at least half are extraordinarily good.
The reign of Shahabuddin Ghauri, a learned man from Nishapur, the fort at Nandana in the picturesque Pothohar country and its despotic keeper, an escaped girl, and a traveling family of proud members of the Gakhar tribe who provide refuge - Only Asad Muhammad Khan can make an era alive with such sharp and quick strokes, and subsume the reader in the story. 'Qaflay kay Sath Sath' is a quintessential historical tale from Asad Muhammad Khan about ordinary lives in times of arbitrary exercise of power, courage and mutual loyalty of traditional people, their sense of survival and the human capacity for helping each other and of self-sacrifice.
'Waaris' is a sharp and impactful story about the Baluchistan missing persons told in the third person and revolving around a leftist activist who is being taken away never to return, and who leaves with rare aplomb and sport, while frantically trying to safeguard his comrades.
'Cocoon' is Asad Muhammad Khan's avatar as a writer of the surreal and the macabre - the narrative voice and perspective of a child whose history and location remains a suspenseful enigma till he manages to escape from his underground abode and discovers a reality which he only received in the past in a warped and misrepresented form.
Every anthology of Asad Muhammad Khan contains a story or two set in a red light district setting. He neither romanticizes the context - far from it - nor does he sensationalize or make it over-sordid. Instead, he captures the characters and their lives in this most unusual and ancient setting with remarkable deftness, sensitivity and realism. 'Chootay Bore Ka Pistool' brilliantly encapsulates the sense of self-worth amongst the courtesan community and yet the feeble tools it has to safeguard it against the contempt and hubris of the gentry and the public opprobrium that it constantly apprehends. There are so many shades of gray here from the considered senior civil servant to his tactful 'special' aide (everyone in that setting doesn't have to look and manifest as a salivating and salacious freak) to the pragmatic and worldly-wise Laaji sahib striking a balance in her marginal world.
'Ik Tukra Dhoop Ka' reminisces about old friends, especially Jaun Elia. 'Daro Ka Adda' describes a day of uninhibited celebration at a cheap, local liquor outlet on part of various classes of people who are reduced otherwise to a life of toil and penury. 'Dhamakay mein chai how buzurg' is surreal and sarcastic tale of a suicide bomber who finds himself in a facility administering enemas. 'Malangni ka Qissa' revolves around religious obscurantists creating their politics from any opportunity, including artistic output. 'Bob ka chaikhana' is a short sketch of an idiosyncratic teahouse.
'Dani ki Kahani' is a heartwarming story about the triumph of good over evil, even as it is set in the underbelly of society with its lawless, ruffians, harlots, human smugglers, drug peddlars and other undesirables. Bhoora Jabir, Allah Bakhsh Sheedi aka Yar Muhammad Makrani aka Yaroo Sheedi aka Kala Sher, Baila Bai Wala Jaway and Malbari are such vibrant and memorable characters. The dialogue is particularly impactful with the author capturing Makrani and other dialects and usage. The story is masterfully told from the perspective of a fifteen year old boy who has grown up in the prostitutes' quarters.
'Madhobai ki adhoori kahani' has a dream like feel to it and introduces the protagonist Mian Mahmood Hassan Khan aka Mamoo Mian in the teak forests of Burma to the remarkable character of Albaila Singh who is as magnanimous, friendly, light-hearted and fun-loving as his name suggests.
'Humsai' is a long and scintillating detective mystery and adventure story set in Asad Muhammad Khan's native Bhopal and with Mian Mahmood Hassan Khan aka Mamoo Mian again as the protagonist. The story unfolds at his estate that separates the estates of arch rivals Thakur Nahar Singh and Mumtaz Ali Khan, both close to the Nawab of Bhopal, who were always at loggerheads with each other. A huge dispute involving family honor emerges between them and threatens to escalate into a bloody communal riot. Narrated by a family retainer Najeeb ullah Khan the story has lovely descriptions, dialogue, wit, local dialect, and an exploration of norms of tolerance and co-existence as well as old world propriety that ultimately prevails over forces of fissure and division. The landed and aristocratic but dubious and quarrelous Nazir Khan Bangash, the extended picnics of the unsavory called 'Bhopalion ki Got,' the milk-selling community of the religiously conservative and less tolerant neighboring Gwalior state, Kammo the comical cleaner, the town of Deepalpura with its extremist organizations, the labyrinthine houses of local Hindu merchants and money lenders, Dhapi Ghosan the feisty and faithless owner of cattle, and the Moriarty like Shukla who was the devious element behind the entire intrigue — tale is full of memorable characters and steeped in the local culture and social milieu, and very enjoyable.
