This picture book would benefit the social studies teacher when covering Japan. The picture book does an excellent job of presenting the numbers one to ten in Japanese, using each number to introduce concepts about Japan and its culture. For example, the number six, which is ro-koo, in Japanese, the author describes that there are six major sumo tournaments in Japan each year. Children would be interested that the average sumo match lasts only ten seconds, so there are many matches in each tournament.

This book offered a simple counting system to learn Japanese numbers from 1-10. A cultural relevance to the numbers were included. I would like to learn more about the culture that was presented in the book in regards to time... Are the traditions still relevance given the original publication date of the book (1987). For example, in traditional marriages, are nine cups of sake still drunk?

It was alright. I learned a few new things. Much like the other books in this series I want the book to be longer.
