The bell that holds power over death has been lost. The race to find it has begun, and our world hangs in the balance.
Caroline and Owen search for the bell across the land of the living. Ben Dejooli, now known as the Walker, searches the land of the dead. Their mission is to protect the bell and keep it secret. Others seek the bell as well, but they have different plans... plans that could disrupt the careful balance between life and death that has stood since the beginning of time.
When a young boy finds the bell out in the plains of Texas, he quickly becomes the target of a showdown between the lands of the living and the dead, and those that want to rule over both.
B. B. Griffith writes best-selling supernatural thrillers. He is the author of the Vanished series, the Tournament series, and the Gordon Pope thrillers. He lives in Denver, CO, where he is often seen sitting on his porch staring off into the distance or wandering to and from local watering holes with his family.
This is the second book in the Vanished series. You must read the first book to understand the premise of the story. If you enjoyed Follow The Crow, you will like this one.
Things I liked: - Unique plot - Keeps you in suspense - Interesting characters - Love the New Mexico/Texas references
Kindle Unlimited There are several memorable characters who carry over in the series. Carolyn Adams is an oncology nurse at the main hospital in Alberquerque, working on the Intensive Care Unit for cancer patients, which is separate from the main ICU. Dr. Owen Bennet also works with cancer patients at the Alberquerque hospital. Both also donate time to the Chaco Health Center on the reservation. The other constant throughout the series is The Walker. The Walker is a changing personality, an escort, one you will learn to appreciate as things roll along. And, of course, the crows.
The second in this paranormal series, set for the most part on the Navajo Reservation in NW New Mexico /Southern Utah/NE Arizona, and sold as The Vanished Series Books 1-3, Beyond the Veil is a continuation of The Vanished but completely stand alone. The story is much richer, however, if read as a series. In Beyond the Veil, we have Ben Dejooli, Caroline Adams, Owen Bennet, and the (new) Walker from the first novel. We also hear from Grant Romer and his grandfather. Grant is a tweenie, riding his bicycle all over the oil fields outside of Midland, Texas. His grandfather is a tool-pusher on one of the rigs, returning to work from retirement when Grant's parents are killed in a car wreck. Grant has a special second sight and a very close bond with Chaco. The giant crow Chaco and Ben's childhood friend Joey have starring roles as well. This is a very entertaining and compelling book. I couldn't put it down.

Okay, my very favourite character was Chaco. I loved that bird. I liked how the crows led the way to Grant and protected him. Abernathy (Pap) is a great character. Ben becomes the Walker. I am not sure about the Soul Map and the strings or the Veil. When I picture them in my mind all I can see is a cartoon of a moving veil and I cannot picture the soul map at all. Douglas and Parsons are crazy. I really like Owen why Caroline cannot, is beyond me. Grant is a good little soldier.
I was liking the first book, but this one evolved to a too much "handwavium" where things just happened without too much explanation as to the logic of the magic and the mistery part of the first book wasn't present here. Besides, this is just a personal irk, but I'm not much into love triangles, not much love here, this isn't a romance, but it's just another point to add as to why I disliked it. I'm not going to read the final book in the series.
Unique writing style, for sure, but the story felt pointless somehow... Like sitting a class where the professor was droning on and on and you were fighting to stay awake... He knows his stuff, but you just can't stay awake...
This is the second book in the series and it opens with action and ends with action: this book barely takes a breath from the end of the first book to an epic battle to keep the land of the dead from fully opening and overwhelming the land of the living. The bell has found a new guardian in the form of a very brave and resilient young boy, who is befriended by Chaco and found by Caroline and Owen who have been searching the country for him. Together they learn of a threat from beyond death that has stopped souls from passing and which threatens to release demonlike creatures into this world to spread chaos and despair. Ben Dejooli, Death, and the members of the Circle of Crows unite to fight off a new threat. As with the first book, this story looks at the nature of love, sacrifice and duty which call upon ordinary people to act in an extraordinary manner for the sake of those they love and for those they don't even know, but all who need to find Death and a passage to their final destination. Lots of good Navajo lore, the strong and sympathetic characters and a fresh look at the supernatural forces that are common to all humans.
This is the second book of this series...and I got through it in maybe two days. Went really fast. Very enjoyable fantasies...love the input from Navajo culture and the developing characters in the books. I enjoyed this one as much as the first installment of the series. I especially enjoyed the new character, Grant, who is an 8 year old boy. As a person, he is great. And the other people from the first book, and Chaco, the 'crow' love him and his insight. I think what I really enjoy about these books, is the imagination behind them, and the combining of cultures and religions to talk about life after death. These books also talk about the fight between good and evil, and some of the ideas are things I really believe as concerns how people leave this earth and how their personalities and choices impact what happens next.
I'm going for the next book, because I'm enjoying these way too much!
When I say this series is a 'can't put down', I am not kidding. Beyond the Veil was every bit as enthralling as Follow the Crow. These characters are some of most unique I have read in a long time. I dare you to have a favorite. This story goes into some strange lands- literally. Having a 'soul walker' maneuvering on several planes of soul is way, way out there, but Griffith creates these imaginative landscapes in a way that is totally believable. There is nothing not to love about this series. I have already started the last in the series. If you haven't read Follow the Crow- do it. Now. You won't be disappointed.
Book 2 continues with more information about the bell that keeps order in the land of souls and about its newest Keeper and the Guardians. Caroline and Owen continue to be key players and The Walker sees his role convoluted and strained by the 2 agents encountered in book 1. In addition, the 2 agents have ripped the fabric of the veil freeing chaos and troubled souls. Leaving the Walker trying to wrangle Chaos. It leads to interesting circumstances and new goals for The Walker and the team on the living side of the veil. Book 3 promises to be a wild ride to determine the outcome of this supernatural and original series.
Holy moly! This series just keeps getting more interesting with each installment! Now the main character has died but he has a job in the afterlife. I can’t say more than that without spoilers but what is really interesting is how differently other people think about death, the supernatural and how various “worlds” interact with each other. It’s also the first book of fiction I’ve read that discusses how death affects our feelings, how we are not in control of our emotions and how they effect our decisions and in so doing who we end up spending time with and how that informs our story. Already started the next book!!
This is an interesting bridge story -- I'm pretty sure it couldn't really stand up on its own. It's too deeply steeped in what comes before; I won't go on about the ending.
Still, it is remarkably hard to stop reading. The story moves like lightning in an Arizona sky -- or Texas, or New Mexico, where most of the story takes place.
The Bell has been found and it's now up to Caroline & Owen to protect it -- while Ben guards the thin areas where souls go.
An amazingly well-woven story, and a surprise around every page turn.
The second book in the series didn't ring my "bell" nearly as much as the first book did. The paranormal aspect of the story line really flared in book two. Started to lose me in places, in fact! Almost put it down a couple times (down, as in giving up). Still, no quitter me. So I read on. Went on to the third of the series, but not sure if I will continue if the series does. Hard to say at this point.
I didn’t realize that the second novel was going to be quite different from the first one (which was mostly rooted in the regular world we live in.) This second novel is a lot like the work of one of my favorite authors, Dean Koontz. Weird and otherworldly. I loved the descriptions of things and happenings. Super cool and easy to visualize!!
The Vanished Series by B.B. Griffith - Book 2 Beyond the Veil - This book begins where Book 1 ends. You must read Book 1 to understand what is going on. Ben has died from his illness and is The Walker. Caroline and Owen are looking for the bell. All of this makes perfect sense when you read the book. It is a fantasy about life and death mixed in with the Navajo lore. A truly fascinating book. I have the 3rd book and will be reading tomorrow. Griffith is a good writer.
The fight for good over evil told in an interesting way with very unique heroes….a Navajo police officer, a nurse, a doctor, a kid….and lots of other individuals from all over the world all with turquoise totems. The two agents are vanquished or neutralized, but the fight isn’t over yet. This is a different telling of the heaven and hell story, where souls are sent after death. The one that we are all used to, from the Bible, is pretty fantastic also.

This is the second in the series. It is not as quite as good as the first book. I have heard the writer compared to Hellerman, but he is not a Hellerman! The style of the book is, perhaps, but not the writing. I have just started the third (and final?) book in the series, I hope it lives up to the promise of the first book.
This is book 2 in the Vanished series. This incredible story continues when the bell is found, therefore gaining a new Keeper. The storyline is fantastic as are the characters. I felt like this was a combination of What Dreams May Come meets The Game of Thrones ! You will love this series! On to book 3!
From the moment you start reading you won't want to put this book down! It's packed with action from the first page to the last. I was unsure about continuing this series as the first book was entertaining, but wasn't one of my favorites. So happy I decided to read this second book! You won't be disappointed.
The story continues. This book spends time painting a picture of the authors rendition of what the “between” world looks like (beyond the veil). The characters seek to complete their souls purpose. Grant is one of my favorites! Not the genre that I would usually pick but I am finding it enjoyable.
A clear step away from Navajo beliefs but is a step towards evil and madness and that is always chaotic and ugly. Every author who writes about evil always ends up in a very dark place and then tries to explain that dark place. This author knows how to tell a story and it resonates with the reader. It will be very interesting to see where this tale takes us.
I was in tough shape before recent surgery between immense pain and frustration I was having a hard time concentrating. This story sounded interesting and has been a great and healing read. Thank you BB Griffith for your insights and courage for writing something encouraging and written so well. You made a difference for me.
A second book in a series that is as just as good as the first. The characters are like friends now. Owen and Caroline search for the new keeper of the bell. The walker is still waking the soul map and then the agents start interfering and Chaco works at keeping everyone on the right path.
This story kept me on the edge of my seat. A dark fantasy with very human characters that are almost constantly in danger. This is an explanation of heaven and hell that sounds more real than the religious one, and is very believable! Can’t wait for the next book!
Loved it. It had a great connection to the first book. The characters are people you just have to root for. Who doesn’t love a smartalek crow? I loved the way the book 2 had a conclusion.....but. Looking forward to book 3. So glad I bought the 3 book set so I can keep reading.
I could not put this one down! Read it in one morning flat and still reeling. Wow. So many twists and turns, with awesome team moments that bring to mind the avengers: end game thrills. Can't wait to start book 3!
As I was reading, I got flashes of Tron and The Stand among others. This is not to say that the plot is derivative but perhaps I’ve just read too much sci fi. At the book’s heart is Navajo mythology and it is for this that I’m following the series.
LOVED book 1. Probably those more into the fantasy aspect of that one will love this one too. I think I was more enchanted by the heart of the Navajo in book 1. Will still read book 3. Well written. Well told. Audiobook is well done.
