Child/God- The apt title attracts you along with its beautiful cover.
At first, it seems that story hovers around Raghav Malhotra. As you advance with more chapters, you will see a common man struggling with common problems and trying to move away. And there, the purpose of book connects the readers.
Yes, Author beautifully describes the characters' lifestyle and situations in such a minutest details that you could feel scenes moving around in your imagination.
The story is not about Rishi and Raghav. Also, it's not about Leela, Aparna, Sandy, and other characters. It's about how we see the world in our perception.
In this one and only grand and heavy book, you could find the gist of The Alchemist, The monk who sold his Ferrari, You can win, How to love your Job, One minute manager, and mix of other biographies put together.
Every element is present in the book from Suspense, Love story, Conflict, Struggle, Erotica, Unexpected events, and even unbelievable ways of implementing teachings of the Holy Geeta in practical life.
Author has a good style about his writing that urges you to read on till the last page. And even you want more. It might be possible you read few chapters twice or thrice seeking for solutions of your personal problems.
Can Ravana become Rama? Are we all Gods? Do we transform a Child god into a human? Can a human be transformed into a God?
If these questions intrigue you, then it's a book to answer all your questions.
Without a doubt, grab the book. Read it slowly to absorb the unheard, unspoken, unbelievable but real and true wisdom.
It's not often that you come across a book that keeps you so hooked that you lose your hunger and your sleep! The book Child/God by Ketan Bhagat did exactly that to me! This week, I hardly slept since I had taken the book in my hands on Monday. After returning back from office, there would be an acute desire to begin reading. Finally, I finished it yesterday night at 1130 pm. Well, Ketan Bhagat and Chetan Bhagat are brothers. But the similarity ends there. They write on completely different themes and their writing style is also unique.
My review: Well, I liked everything about the book. It begins well, has an interesting story line, and the language is lucid. The book is more about relationships - relationships between husbands and wives, mothers and sons, fathers and sons. It is a story of how the protagonist turns into a devil from a man and his slow transformation to a better version of self. The transformation is assisted by the birth of his son, whom he compares to God. The book is highly philosophical, and I won't recommend it to those who can't understand it. However, the author puts it up so comfortably that all philosophies seem very easy to master. Kudos Ketan! Loved your signature on the book! Hope to read more of you!
Child/God is a multidimensional story of Raghav. An employee of an IT firm, not-so brilliant in his school and college days, always compared with his studious, smart, and intelligent brother, getting married to a pampered, headstrong, stubborn girl, whom he himself spoils even more by mollycoddling, a wannabe writer. Frustrated, angry, and fed up with the life, Raghav assorts to several methods to overcome the depression of leading a meaningless life. His life gets a new meaning when a little cute baby boy enters his life to play the role of God himself. How Raghav's life changes afterwards is the thread of the story.
Being a seasoned writer's brother, it is more difficult to get acceptability to one's writing since his writing would be compared with his brother's , time and again. But, surprisingly or not author proved with his book that he is not in the industry to exploit a celebrity. Strong, touching story-line, captivating narration, compelling cliffhangers; the book has everything that makes a bestseller.
The book is huge for Indian standards. The page count is 351 but word count might be nearly one lac since the dimensions of the book is more than what we generally see. Hence a lazy reader might find it difficult to complete the book. Some of the unnecessary details could have been cut short. But it is an inevitable fact that the huge book never bored me as a reader.
The book had a lot of autobiographical elements or I felt so. Hence the first person narration was giving a feel that Ketan was talking not Raghav. The book can be categorized into multiplicity of genres like philosophical, parenting, self help, contemporary and many more. Raghav's character would make us wish if all fathers were like him.
An excellent blurb speak everything about the book. A lot of care is taken in character development. The plot is complicated but the narration is simple. Soon to be made into a movie, the book will be the next talk of the town.
I recommend the book to all readers who are looking for a book with substance, emotions, and values.
Reviewed for the publisher Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book as a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Truth be told , I recieved this book as review copy & as soon as I started the book , I found the plot is so sticky that it kept me glued to the book till the very end . Ketan Bhagat has pen down a Page turner , true and direct-from-heart story which holds the breath of the reader in some stances . Plot revolves around the main protagonist Raghav Malhotra who works in an IT Company , intelligent and ambitious extrovert who keeps the grin around himself by cracking jokes and cheesy lines . But as happens in the Indian-society , he is always compared with his elder brother Rishi since his childhood days who is a successful writer , an IIT product who scaled the economics of family and hence the apple of everyone's eye . But Raghav is never envied of his brother's success rather always proud of having him but with time events turned into manner that as always ego and race to act smart put cracks in relationships which stressed Raghav and spat with his wife settled him to drown in work silently inspite of chirpy Raghav . But as said by legends , birth of a child is considered as the birth of almighty , a child who fills any crack into relation . With newbie in family , Raghav's life filled with joy , he realised how society try to module us in their ways . Apart from seriousness , author has bolted the contents in humorous ways , planting characters like Dog Uncle , who lives his life on his own terms , calling dogs more faithful than any human . Only situation i faced with the book is that its not handy , as big as any register which makes it difficult for reader to carry it while moving . So I suggest author to look at the size , if possible Re-publish in the bit smaller size . In short , Child/God is a must read book which enlightens readers with the true joy & meaning of life . A Self help book it can be called !
Child/God is not the dollar-paperback sort of stuff that characterises the output of most Indian writers today. If anything, it veers towards – yes, believe it – literary fiction.
The book deals with the life of Raghav Malhotra, a Delhi boy with an unremarkable academic record who nevertheless manages to go to a premier MBA college and gets a typical middle-management job with an IT Company. His wife Leela is a yoga instructor and Raghav’s primary ambition appears to be the success of her enterprise.
The biggest influence in Raghav’s life, however, is his elder brother Rishi Malhotra, whose own career has been spectacular – IIT, IIM, Investment Banking and then a career as a bestselling novelist. The other is his mother Seema, whose abandonment of the boys’ father in their youth has been a definitive event for both the brothers.
From here we are taken through the next couple of years in Raghav’s life during which he runs through a gamut of emotions and events, from a near-breakdown in his marriage to serious strain on his relationships with both his brother and his mother.
As Raghav slides into a moral quagmire, the Book shifts to the titular subject – the emergence of his son as the driving force for him to re-examine his life. Avoiding spoilers, all I can say is that Ketan stays away from the clichés that would typically attend such a transformation. No soppy father-son moments (well ok, a few, but not too many). No sudden transformations. Under the guidance of the redoubtable Dogfather and drug-addict-turned-spiritual-guru Balraj, Raghav plumbs the depths and rises again, with the transformative impact of his son Ish being not so much by way of actual divinity as by providing an example of the key to a happy life.
Positive aspects: - To the heart Indian book. With some hindi lines, author connects well with the reader. - Room for everyone who reads. From parents to children, from singles to about-to-be-doubles, everyone will find themselves linked with the story. (I have actually lived it.) - Well described emotions. At times I found myself so involved in Raghav's depression that I was so upset to talk to anyone. - Very grasping. I have skipped two books in a row to read this one. It was hard to keep it away. Negative Points: - Not anything serious in particular, but size of the book is quiet scaring! For a person like me, who thinks twice before carrying course books--having 374 pages extra in my bag was not less than miracle but this book worths it. From the page signed by the author to the author's picture at the end, I liked everything in the book (one star is only for Rian's picture!) There is no need to rate it but as a formality I have to give my ratings, ie. 4.5/5.
Read Child/God. Really deep read. Makes you think of all the decisions you have taken in life and even question your state in life! A big book in terms of size and to excite a reader to read it completely, shows the capability of author. Many of us, can relate to Raghav and his many challenges/doubts in life. I will definitely recommend this book to anyone who interested in a thought provoking read.
Well I have completed with Ketan Bhagat second novel Child/God. After a long time I have read something which is really worth and I enjoyed it. I even read his first novel which was written wonderfully and had lot of things which can make you think and learn. Chetan Bhagat mostly writes about college, love life, youth, etc but Ketan Bhagat has the ability to write beyond that. He writes about family, life after marriage, wisdom words, children, friends, how you should make your life better and his both the books has all these topics covered which is very much required to balance your life. He has a unique way of writing skills.
Coming to the story, author has done a great job. The story is about Raghav Malhotra who has ruined childhood and not appreciated by anyone because of his casual behaviour, low grades, his own parents compare him with his own high professional big brother Rishi Malhotra who is the author of blockbuster novels and scripts. Raghav is the husband of most beautiful wife Leela who is a yoga teacher and always accepted Raghav as he was. The first part of the story is all about how Raghav was compared and never accepted by any of his family member, not even by his mom due to his failures. He used to run yoga classes with his wife and was very passionate about this business. He works in an MNC there also he is trashed each and every time and he also became frustrated Indian husband who was bored with his wife. His brother was rich, famous, great marketing, writing skills, youth icon, celebrity. Raghav also wanted to become writer but his brother became an obstacle and never supported him and Raghav manuscript was rejected by every publisher as his brother never wanted him to come in same profession. Because of all this he was killed from inside and started consuming alcohol, drugs, daily argument with his wife and slapping her and even going to red alert area to have sex. Yoga classes also shut down and Leela got pregnant but Raghav was not happy and neither had he taken care of Leela. He almost had dead feelings and emotions.
The second part is the turning point which changed Raghav when his wife gave birth to a child called Ish. Raghav named him as living God as he considered his Guru who brought him back from the depression. He started observing his child carefully rather than teaching him right and wrong. He started relating his situations and his life with his child and taking actions on it. He started spending time with his wife and son and focusing on only important things in life and left all bad habits. He started doing yoga and again working on the manuscript rather than worrying about who will publish and who all will read. He made proper schedule, he looked younger than before, had wisdom words in his speaking. All this happened because he observed his child who changed his life from all side. During this whole story lot of characters are described who made the reading fun and helped him to create his own identity rather than knowing him as Rishi Malhotra brother.
Good points about this book. I liked the cover page of the book and printing is also great with proper font size. Lot of memories are described in this book which can take you back to your childhood. Lot of information about different places is given with proper details. How to deal with problems and difficult situations, focusing on important things in life and how one should live their life without any fear, ego and failure with wonderful examples quotes. Lots of incidence are described which are real and the story is properly written which won’t let feel the story is running fast.
Limitations of this book. Last book written by the author was of 373 pages and this is of 351 pages with increase in its length too. This book is bigger than the last book so it is very difficult to read but the suspense made me read the whole book. Some part of the book is boring and you would like to skip it. Repetition of sentences and paragraphs are there at some places. This book is way different from the other books and very much interesting. Author has unique way of writing skills and he writes about the present condition of each and every person is facing today with solutions. Yoga has the power to change you and it is very well described. You can learn lot of things which can change you and your thinking when you read it. Ketan Bhagat can write better than his brother. This is a lengthy book but it was fun to read and I would give 4*/5 for Novel Child/God of Mr. Ketan Bhagat.
Writer – Ketan Bhagat Publishers – Rumour Book India Genre – Fiction/ Contemporary ISBN – 978-81-929532-4-3 Page Count – 351
Platform: The story is about the Raghav Malhotra who has enjoyed ruined childhood & life up to the marriage. Completely careless, not sincere and moron Raghav is the husband of most beautiful wife Leela and brother of high professional Rishi Malhotra who is the author of blockbuster novels and scripts. Things change when he completes a novel and asks his brother to help in it. The big brother neglects his demands with buttering. The situations become worst with the rejection of book by publisher, demoralization by family and fight with the working wife. Its all about how he conquers the scattered things and how becomes sincere with the new entry of god in his life in the face of infant. Raghav Malhotra becomes “The Raghav Malhotra” with the time and finds his own strength but how… to know, you would have to read the book. Strength Of Book: Platform is knitted very well and justice is done equally with each character discussed. A unique topic is discussed which many of peoples are suffering from. Admirable literature is used to explore the attention of mind. Also, real social incidences are connected in the story to make readers more familiar with characters. Writer knows what readers want to read and hence briefed each thing very well. Readers won’t feel the story is running so fast. Step by step, authors has made story matured to grasp the mind of bookworms. Love, life, violence, frustration, tension, learning, situations and all the remaining things which a person really goes thorough are embedded very well to let reader feel he is reading his own story. Curiosity of reading next page doesn’t end up to last page. Perfect blend of one’s real life is presented in the novel with the spices of fiction. Centralized person played its role in amazing way and made story alive in effective manner. Also, Countless memorable moments are expressed. Weakness Of Book: Abuses and vulgar words are used too much. Though an author writes all the things which demands reader attention but it could be more impressive if it was without these shits. Besides this, I didn’t get any weakness in the book. Conclusion: Our country has got the precious writer and Ketan is best among rests. I have read many of Indian authors, but he is unique and adorable. I really have no words to say him thank you for writing such incredible novel. The art by which he crafts his views and make unknown things familiar is unbeatable. No such work is done in history and I am sure not going to be for next hundred years. And I accept as being an author I really can’t imagine ever what he writes in heart touching way. Outstanding work is done, nothing could be better than this Child/God. It must be converted in blockbuster movie.
What an amazing book. You start reading the book with not much of an expectation but very soon, the characters start talking to you and at some point or other, they start resonating with you. you start relating to the characters, circumstances & social setup. Very soon, you also start feeling the painful journey that Raghav (protagonist) goes through. His desperation to be successful in life and all his attempts falling flat, rejection coming from all walks of life make you reach out to him. sometimes, you feel angry at him and there are times, you feel terribly sorry for him but at the end you always want him to be happy somehow. The transformation that the child brings to the whole scenario is organic. the perspective presented comes across refreshing and brings such a beautiful change. Its a must read who is about to be a father or has been a father recently. It will almost seem like your own story.
Out of sheer curiosity, I picked up the book and I feel good that I wasn’t wrong I picking this. It’s a great tale and maybe for the first time has parenthood been discussed from a fathers point of view.
It’s refreshing to know how much and whom all can a child influence.
Child always is known to have a drastic change in a mother’s life. We all know that. This book tells about how a father feels about a child. Interesting precept to see the world through child’s eyes.
Very fluent narration and even for once you won’t feel bored or not connected to the story. Somewhere I even felt it as a story of the author and his brother too. Thanks to their sharing the same passion for writing. It sounds like his family story.
well, i got this book by chance. i knew nothing about ketan and his writing skills. ketan came to our college to promote his book (this is his 2nd novel). since, i had not read any novel for months, so purchased a copy and had no expectation from it. As you start reading this book you would start making comparison of ketan to that of chetan. he also has got good skills as that of his brother . But as you read further (the book is quite a thick one),you will realize how much talented ketan is. he not only possesses good humour skills but also has a deep understanding of relations. this is not a father-son story but more of finding real value of life through a child/god.
Ketan Bhagat thinks different and I thoroughly enjoyed reading his thoughts, most of which can be practiced in our day to day situations. I felt that only negative point was the frustrations against rishi ( the elder bro) was a tad too long.
Interesting and gripping story about this guy who gets his life all messed up and is totally confused and finally he sees God in his child and his life turns for the better.
