Faith’s War is the 6th novel from this accomplished author of stories about what women did in the 2nd World War, their relationships, the work they took on, and the hardships they endured. This latest novel shows us the hardships that the people of Malta endured during the war, especially as they waited for the convoy which would literally stop them from starving, and being overrun by the Nazis.
Faith is a young nurse, working in Malta in 1941. The story tells of her work with terribly wounded soldiers, as well as the friendships she makes with other young women, and the blossoming romance with a(of course very handsome!)doctor. An interesting sub plot is the fact that Faith discovered just before she left England, that she was adopted. And her mother seems to have been Maltese. So she is searching for her roots, whilst being constantly being bombarded during Nazi night raids, trying to have the occasional bit of fun, and meanwhile falling in love! It ends happily! The chapters leading up to the arrival of the ship bringing supplies, which limped into Valletta harbour in tatters, are really tense and very moving. A really good read!
