Contains biographies of every Pope from St. Peter through John Paul II. The biographies are grouped into eight sections, each preceded by an essay describing the historical period each pope lived in. The book includes 162 pages of black and white photographs and portraits and 121 engravings.
I noticed that the entries for the early popes usually state that "little" or "very little" are known about them. But Charles A. Columbe's book Vicars of Christ are able to provide short biographies of these same popes. Although Mr. John doesn't state the reason for this, I'm guessing that he doesn't consider oral tradition to be a reliable source.
