The Elves Lost Their Magic.
The Princess is a Dragon.
The Halfling is a Shifter.
And Witches Rule the Realm...

Liss has spent her life trapped in Cradelow Valley, dreading a bleak future of rigid structure and forced Engagements. The Darkbane elves lost their magic—and possibly their minds—long ago, in the time Before. But Liss still believes in magic and the outside world. So when the Council announces a dangerous decree at her Sixteenth ceremony, she curses clocks and determines to find a way out. A way to freedom and, hopefully, more. If her best friend doesn’t try to stop her.

Goddess, why is Dev always so careful? It’s exhausting.

If only there were someone out there she could trust...

Meanwhile, beyond the confines of the valley, Zan the changeling is a decade into scheming ways to rescue his half-sister from the witches who kidnapped her and stole her magic—powerful, crystal-based magic of the Yansu dragon-elves.

Ayer was the Yansu crown princess, which makes Zan...

It doesn’t matter. There are rumors of curses breaking and Darkbane elves returning to reclaim their realm. If that’s true, then his moment might finally have arrived.

Just imagine, the Darkbane elves and dragons united against the witches...

The fallout would be epic.

Get spooky year-round with this nostalgic and whimsically wicked, multi-POV YA Epic Fantasy. For fans of immersive worlds like Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and fantastical, folkloric slow-burns like Uprooted by Naomi Novik.

Noelle's first foray into the writing world was a chapter book co-scribbled with her first-grade BFF, titled Horse & Mouse: Unlikely Friends. Since then, she's penned countless poems, unfinished drafts, and seven whole novels (six of which are now covered in proverbial cobwebs and hoarding space on her Little-Hard Drive-That-Could). Needless to say, The Valley of Lies was a long time coming. But She's finally here, in all her weird and wonderful whimsy, thanks to an absolutely epic ensemble of friends, family, and a miniature dachshund called Penny. CHEERS!

The Valley of Lies

Noelle Penny

“The Valley of Lies” is the first book in “The Lightkeepers Trilogy”.. It is a promising start.

Ms Penny does an excellent in the fictional world building that is so basic to much fantasy literature. We have a map to which we can refer as the story progresses. There are a multitude of tribes inhabiting this world and throughout we learn relevant material involving the geography, history, and politics which have an important bearing on the relationships and belief systems of the characters.

The characters themselves are involved in quests which may involve visions, riddles and tests. One of the best things in this novel, though, is that the author creates very vivid characters who are interesting in themselves. And this applies to the “villains” or morally “ambiguous” individuals.

The use of developing the complex plot through particular individual viewpoints works efficiently. We can see how the various story arcs relate to each other as well as being able to follow the rush of events in the main story line. Of course there is a tremendous climax which is satisfying but leaves things open for the later books. The author does
give us an epilogue and a “sneak Peek” to indicate possible ways events might go.

This is a very interesting opening volume and I look forward to what is to come. I have received a free copy of,this book and in return I have voluntarily agreed to give it an honest review.

This book was such a beautiful journey. I don’t even know how to put into words how much I loved it.

The characters completely stole my heart. I found myself getting attached to every single one of them. I laughed with them, hurt for them, and celebrated every little victory.

The world-building was absolutely gorgeous. It felt so vivid and magical, and somehow matched the stunning cover perfectly. I could picture everything so clearly.

That ending tho… I was NOT prepared. I just sat there staring at the last page, trying to process everything.

The fact that this is only the first book in a trilogy has me so excited. I already miss these characters, and I honestly can’t wait to see where this journey will end.

This is the kind of book that reminds me why I love reading. Easily one of my favorite reads this year!

*I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.*

Sometimes, no matter what the world tells you, you need to believe that there is more than what they say.

A traditional fantasy epic in the vein of ACOTAR and Quicksilver (minus the Spice - But including the magical lands and fantastical creatures and sorcery) this books is absolute yes for anyone seeking that same sort of spellbinding adventure, without the s*x and titillation that those books are known for. That isn't to say there isn't romance, but without the explicit heavy handedness that can turn younger or more conservative readers away.

The story follows two main plotlines, one following the titular 'Valley of Lies' where a race of elves have been banished by witches for the crimes of the past, and a would-be Dragon Queen, enslaved by those very same witches. A changeling, goblins, and wraiths form a rich tapestry which makes this world feel like a real place with its own culture and history. There is a great deal of potential here and it is well worth exploring.

Valley of Lies is a strong start for what will eventually be a trilogy of upper YA Fantasy books by Noelle Penny. Her first major published work, this book was a long time coming, this being Penny's seventh full length novel (the rest remaining unpublished), and it proves right out of the gate the Penny wasn't wasting time in those unpublished manuscripts. While it does fall victim to some of the pitfalls that beginner fantasy can bring (over lore dumping, slightly unrealistic conversations in order to inform the audience of what is going on etc.) those don't happen as often as in many other first novels that I have read, and I have to assume some of those kinks were worked out in those other books.

A really fun read, and I can't wait for part 2.

4 Stars.

An epic tale of Witches, Elves, Dragons and more. The journey was a quick one, or maybe I just read it quickly, but I can't wait for more! Liss has spent her life in the Valley with other Elves. Her dreaded 16th birthday was coming and the dread of knowing she would soon be a Bearer, little did she know things were going to get worse for her... bad enough to take a major risk...

It was an incredible read, it took a little bit for the story to fit together with all of the POV's but it all came together eventually. I love Liss, she really doesn't settle for less, her hope for a better life with magic and adventure was great to see. I also don't blame her for wanting to leave the valley, I would too girl!

Dev was such a sweet character as well, maybe a little cowardly and manipulative at times, but he still really cared for Liss. While it may have not been in the best way he was still a good friend. Liss's relationship with Zan was adorable! They definitely seemed like a good fit. They worked well together and their relationship seemed to progress realistically especially with all that they've been through in their short time together. So that goes without saying the characters and their personalities were incredibly written.

Overall it was a great read with well written, loveable characters, a great plot and a fantastic fantasy atmosphere. I am very excited to see where the story goes from here! I will be patently waiting for the next book.

I was very lucky and honoured to have been given this advance copy.

It’s based around Liss who has been trapped in Cradelow Valley, to which she then decides that she wants to venture out in order to find about her identity, what’s happened in the past with elves, the realm etc but on her 16th birthday ceremony she puts curses onto a lot of clocks & finds a way out (there’s a lot of magic, mystery written within this book).
I don’t want to go into with more detail as you need to read it and find out what happens.

WOW, you get hooked right from the start, flows very well, pacing is good, there’s loads of twists and turns that you don’t want to put this down as you always want to know what’s happening next all the way through to the very end.

This is one of the best fantasy books I’ve read so far, it was well written, lots of characters you get to meet along the way, which kept the book moving as you get to know them more intimately & by being in their head instead of seeing them through someone else’s eyes.

I would highly recommend this book if you love fantasy, great for YA and older

The Valley of Lies
Lightkeepers Trilogy book 1
By Noelle Penny

⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶

🏰Epic High Fantasy
🐈‍⬛World building
🧙‍♀️Hidden village
🧚Curses and magic
🏰Mythical beings of all sorts
🐈‍⬛Enemies to lovers
🧙‍♀️Soul bonds

Okay so this was a long book that really kind of dragged on and was confusing in parts, I really feel there was a lot of details that just weren't necessary for me personally, and the back and forth between the 4 POVs would have been fine if they were more on track. But I absolutely loved the concept Noelle was trying to put to paper, and for the most part she succeeded, it just felt too dragged out for me, and then the last 15%? Was rushed as though she was running out of time to get in even more detail...
I really really wanted to love this book as the blurb drew me in along with the bright colours of the book cover.
But it was a little more miss for me than it was hit...

I absolutely hate leaving negative reviews so on a good note I will say if you love books with a lot of detail in the plot, epic world building and mythical beings ranging from witches to changelings then this is the book for you.

Bigger isn’t always better.

So I went into this book really wanting to like it. It has a lot of aspect I really like! Elves and culture shock are things I sorely miss.

However, this book felt like it was trying to do too much at once. Four POVs made it so every time I was starting to sink into the plot, it would change. The pacing never felt right.

There were also some writing choices that felt strange and wishy washy. Oh the captor is performing experiments on the captive. Oh but he respects her consent sexually. (Not that that stopped the author from implying more happened and then taking it back in later chapters)

Also (minor spoiler)

There was a lot of stuff started that felt like I didn’t get enough of for one book. Multiple Times characters are shocked to find out someone is or did something, but it’s not made clear WHY that thing or status is a big deal. It made it hard for the stakes to grip me.

Overall the premise of escaping your isolated society was promising and it started strong, but it became bogged down with the four POVs and some strange writing choices that eventually just made me not care anymore.

I will not be continuing this series.

Thank you to the author for this advance copy. This is my honest review.

The Valley of Lies is a haunting fantasy tale filled with magic and intrigue. We’re introduced to the world from the multi POV and it unfolds so smoothly. The characters are complex and carry an emotional depth that makes you invest in each one of them. The heroes aren’t perfect, and that’s what makes them so wonderful. They are each flawed in their own ways, but it makes them relatable. The charming, yet sometimes clueless Zan, was my far my favorite! And even though you may hate the villain, you still enjoy discovering more about them. There may even be one or two that you hope the author gives some redemption to in book 2 or 3!

There are sweet underlying love stories woven in. It includes some emotionally charged moments, with a few light kisses, making it a great choice for younger readers, or readers who like clean romance in their fantasy.

You’ll feel immersed in this world, from the vivid imagery to the emotions pouring from the characters. The more mature themes in this book are handled well, conveying the plight of the elves and other species under the witches’ control.

You’ll be sad when it ends. But no fear, it’s the first in a trilogy, so there will be more of your favorite characters still to come!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I am UNWELL. This book lives in my head now.

Okay so I need to talk about EVERYONE in this book because the whole cast is unhinged in the best way.

LISS. My girl. A rune-sketching, rule-breaking dreamer who refuses to believe the valley is all there is, and then just…

The Council telling her to accept her fate

ZAN. 🐈‍⬛🔥 Horned, snarky, secretly soft, turns into a giant wildcat.

Zan when he's a giant wildcat and still thinks he's being subtle.

DEV absolutely wrecked me. His whole arc is such a quiet tragedy hiding under "loyal childhood best friend" — and then…

AYER deserves her own shrine. A DECADE of captivity, of being paraded and tortured and passed between three siblings like property, and she never stops being someone worth rooting for.

Now let's talk about the Triumvirate, because this might be the best villain trio I've read in ages.

DOMIRA is deliciously vile — the eldest, the one holding all the actual power, the one who turns Ayer's captivity into court theater and genuinely enjoys it.

Domira to literally everyone in her own family

FOSWIDA is TERRIFYING and I mean that as the highest compliment. A centuries-old witch stuck in a child's body…

Foswida when Domira interrupts HER game to make it about herself

And Edril — look, I already know I'm alone on this one, but I am fully, unapologetically obsessed with him as a character. I am waiting for his redemption arc, and if I don't get one, I will fix him myself. I said what I said.

This cast — heroes, love interests, and a villain trio that actually feels like a family, tragic backstory and all — is so fully realized that I finished this book emotionally exhausted in the best way. GIVE ME BOOK 2. 😭📖🐉

I received a pre-release copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion, and I've already pre-ordered my own copy. That should tell you everything you need to know. 🐉📖

When I first dove into this book, I was immediately sucked in because it gave me The Giver vibes. You can tell pretty quickly that there is way more under the surface of this book, and I was immediately hooked. Liss had me as a cheerleader almost immediately. As a reader, I love a badass MFC who stays true to herself even when it's inconvenient, and she was all of that from the very first moment.

Enter Dev, an absolute golden retriever if you ever met one, and you just want to be on his side. I was screaming at them out loud, so I definitely wouldn't call this a quiet read, because these two had me loud! Watching them unravel the secrets underneath everything they thought was new is an absolute pleasure ride.

I absolutely love when a book keeps me guessing, and this one absolutely did. Each time I thought I knew what was happening, I was wrong. And all of that happened before the book was even halfway through.

Once Liss took her bravery on the road, the novel started introducing new characters to invest in, and I was already ride or die for her. I would have followed her anywhere... unlike some people!

Zan took me by absolute surprise, and he was entertaining from the very first moment. The way he loves his sister is swoon-worthy. I love a sibling bond that stands through all sorts of evil nonsense. And speaking of evil nonsense, that villain trio was completely hateable in exactly the right ways!

Ayer was the one that I invested in the least at first and the most by the end. Everything she goes through and has been through makes it impossible not to love her. Watching her find her voice and take back her life completely locked me in.

This book changed shape entirely for me at least twice and I was so happy it did. It was a wild ride from beginning to end and the one thing that has me mad about the ending is that I have to wait for Book 2. Wahhhh!

I received this as an ARC copy and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.

So this book is really a 4.5/5 for me (I'll get on that later).

Valley of Lies is a standout book for me. The worldbuilding was interesting. The cast ("four"), centers around Liss, Ayer, Zan, and Dev. All of them were likable (although there were times I wanted to cuff Liss for how she acted). But that's not a bad thing. Making Liss have flaws MAKES her character all that more believable.

The worldbuilding I think was my favorite aspect of this novel. There's a lot to unpack (i.e., different creatures, magic, history, and mythology), but I enjoyed learning more about it as the story continued. This is where I think Noelle's truly shines. She doesn't infodump all of her lore up front. Instead, she sprinkles it throughout the novel. It is hard to succinctly give lore to a reader without it sounding like its all being dumped at once.

My main issue with the Valley of Lies was the pacing. This is a long book, some portions felt slower than others or a little more drawn out than I thought necessary. Sometimes the lore does work against itself, because there is a lot to track over four characters.

Overall, I had a really good time with Valley of Lies. It has a lot of heart behind it. It has an interesting and imaginative fantasy world, and characters I wanted to keep following (and would!). I would absolutely continue to follow this series. I want to see where it goes next!

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

This is the type of fantasy world that I ADORE--layered, heavy on the world building and one that has history. And not just one history but multiple ones because sides matter, interpretation matters, culture matters! This book delivers all of that.

Another thing this book does that I don't see often is that our MC might be the one addressing the conflict head on but the others aren't just complacent--they address it in their own ways which is so cool to see.

Liss is such a fun protagonist. She's headstrong but not a brat. You can see why she pushes so hard and her wanting to question everything rather than just accept it as fact. I love curiosity and smarts in a protagonist and she's just one! Dev, Zan, Ayer and our trio--yes, trio--of villains are just as well layered.

Honestly, the only thing I can say that bugged me was I like my POVs to enter a bit more organically but that's a taste thing and once the characters are present, I'm all in.

Can't wait to see where this goes. But that ending… ooo, it's a shocker. In the best way.

The Valley of Lies is a wonderfully imaginative start to the Lightkeepers Trilogy, packed with magic, dragons, witches, shifters and elves. There’s so much going on within this world, and I loved the feeling that there was always another secret waiting to be uncovered.
Liss is a great protagonist. Her determination to escape the life that has been planned for her made her easy to root for, while the different characters and their individual stories added plenty of intrigue. I particularly enjoyed the twists surrounding the elves, dragons and witches, and the idea of magic being something that has been lost—and perhaps isn’t quite as lost as everyone believes.
The multi-POV storytelling worked well, gradually bringing the different threads together and giving the story a bigger, more epic feel. There were moments where I found myself trying to work out who could be trusted and where the story was heading, which kept me turning the pages.
A fun, twisty YA fantasy with plenty of potential for the rest of the trilogy. I'm definitely curious to see where Liss, Zan and the rest of these wonderfully chaotic characters go next! 🐉✨📚

ARC Review

I enjoyed this book. I really liked how there are so many character point of views. There is a lot of each character trying to figure out what’s going on and who they can trust. I especially like Dev and Zan’s characters. They are appear to be on opposite sides of temperament but have the totally loyal, golden retriever vibes. Liss’ character is definitely a seeker. She really does want to know all about the world. Ayer is the character that I’m most excited to read about more. I really look forward to seeing her confidence grow.

This is a book about magic, curses and nothing and no one being what they actually seem. It definitely takes you on an adventure. There are bonds forming and getting to be explored in this book. There appears to be somerhing something so much deeper happening and I want to see what it is.

ARC- Wow, this was an epic high fantasy with twisting storylines and amazing characters that I really enjoyed.

First person/4 people POV
Epic High Fantasy
World building
Witches, Dragons, elves, and changelings
Curses and magic
Other Mythical beings
Yearning
Soul bonds
Spice - There are elements of romance, but the characters are young (one FMC is 16). There are implications of some conduct, but its closed door and for the plot.

This was a long book that I felt did well with moving between four POVs and their differing storylines. I loved the way they eventually converged. There was a unique feeling to the magic, and the storyline felt fresh. The final 15% felt like it packed in a lot, which was hard to follow at times, but I expect that with a large battle. All in all, a great fantasy book, and I look forward to book 2.

An elfish society set for 300 years in a closed valley. With no fresh blood they need to run breeding programme.
Sounds unsettling? Yeah, Lyss thought that too.
That's why she wanted to find out what expects her Elsewhere. Her friend (and betrothed, yikes!) is not very happy with this.

Meanwhile outside the valley a dragon-shifting princess is held captive by whiches who contained her magic. Her brother wants to help her and during his quest he meets... Lyss.

A very subtle fairy tale with coherent mythology and multiple POV. A magical world letting you forget about everyday life.

Not everything is simple. The characters meet many obstacles and dangerous situtions. Yet, if I was to paint the scenes from this story (something I totally am unable of 😅) it would be in pastels.

This book is an excellent example of multi-pov done right. I’m surprised this is the author’s debut novel. She switches between characters who are together or she does a nice job transitioning to a far off character. It’s nice not being dropped right in.

I loved all the magic creatures in the story from dragons, to shifters, elves, witches, and brownies. I loved how the main FMC does not give up on what she believes. Hope is a big theme in this story. And of course the best part is the found family.

My only criticism is the ending got a little muddy for me. I kept losing track of what was happening and would have to reread it.

Other than that, it is a fantastic read. I can’t wait for book 2.

This story has a whimsical feel and characters you want to win. Villains you love to hate, though I won’t lie, there is a warlock that cracks me up. And even the ominous siblings have a layered back story. It’s full of beautiful descriptions that made me stop just to admire them. I saw myself inside all the details and all the feels. Frustration with some, including all the schemes. The teenage me in Liss—headstrong with all the naivety. The yearning in the boys who love her. Oh, and there is a dragon 👀. This story was so well written. I can’t wait to see what else the author conjures up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Zan cursed in kitten" 🤣 my favourite quote from the whole book. It's pretty serious most of the time, and then this little gem pops up.

This book was amazing!
It kept my attention the whole time, with mysteries and clues, building up perfectly to the finale which was suspenseful and pulling at the heartstrings all at the same time.
I wanted to pull my hair out at that ending - it was almost a happily ever after, but not quite. I hope they manage to succeed in their next quest. And that both heroines get the happily ever after they deserve.
And let's not forget that sneak peak to the prequel novella - gimme gimme gimme!

This is a really nice book! This is the first book in the lightkeeper series and honestly I can't wait for the rest of it.

I love the world building, the pace, the character and the multi POV. But the best part is the story, there's always a twist or a little something that makes it better. With all great series comes a great world that needs to be set and I'll admit that in the beginning I was finding it a bit long. But it's SO worth it, everything you learn gives the story a lot of depth.

By the end of the book I couldn't believe I had to wait to read the next, I am really invested in the story and the great character!

I definitely recommend it to everyone who loves fantasy, magic and magical beings.

I feel really lucky to have had the chance to read this book as an ARC, thanks to the amazing author.

4.5 stars! Such a good book and interesting story. All the characters were great and watching the relationship growth and interactions between the 4 main ones was perfect. The Triumvirate was the perfect amount of unhinged and spooky with lots of suspense (I’m lowkey terrified of Fossie). I loved the ending and final showdown! This book isn't even out yet and I already need the next one! (This was an unpaid ARC provided by the author!)

It was a great adventure, maybe a little slow for me at the beginning.
Good characters & especially Liss who absolute want to proof there is something else beyond het city & that magic still is somewhere. Dev, the overprotective best friend the we have Zan & Ayer dragon blood brother & sister altho Zan is a changeling but still same bloodline has his sister.

Now waiting to have the opportunity to read book 2

All I have to say is…Zan 🫠

This story is written very vividly. Just like the cover. I felt as if I were there in each scene. The characters are layered, flawed and incredibly relatable. Even the villains have a deep and empathetic back story. I relate most to Liss. She doesn’t let anyone shake her resolve (for good or bad). But my favorite character is Zan. Awkward, adorable, funny. But most of all he’s loyal. 🥰

This was a good YA fantasy. This is multi-POV, and is a story that you will want to take your time with. There is no need to rush this story, it is meant to be taken slow, investing in the story one POV at a time. This does have a good bit of world building but it isn’t dumped on you all at once, you gradually learn more making it easier to understand. The way this book left off, I definitely want to read the next book asap when it’s released.
