Secrets of the Seas #3
Tides of Passion
Hunted by a pirate. Bound by circumstance. Drawn to each other against reason.
Society darling Abigail Ross has everything: wealth, beauty, and a future carefully planned. That is, until the notorious Captain Thorne forces her into hiding in New Orleans with a reclusive widower who wants nothing to do with her. She's told it's the safest place for her, and she's inclined to agree-no pirate would think to look for her in the middle of a swamp.
Since his wife died, Lucien Moreau has turned his back on the world. Whispers follow him wherever he goes, branding him a madman. A murderer. He's long since stopped caring, so long as he's left alone with his ghosts. But the bright, headstrong socialite he's forced to protect begins to unravel his carefully guarded solitude.
When Thorne strikes again, Abigail finds herself in the middle of a dangerous pirate hunt. As secrets about her father's involvement in a government plot are revealed, she faces a choice: stand with family and keep her gilded life or walk away and lose it all.
The race is on to find those guilty as the line between survival and surrender begins to blur. And the undeniable pull between Abigail and Lucien becomes harder to deny-until resisting each other feels far more dangerous than any pirate on the horizon.

About the author
Lauren Everly
3 books19 followersLauren Everly first discovered her love for historical romance at the age of twelve, when she stumbled upon a hidden box of Johanna Lindsey novels in her mom’s closet—an accidental find that sparked a lifelong passion for dashing heroes and bold heroines. Now living in the heart of Middle Tennessee with her husband and three children, she’s a flight attendant by day and a writer of sinfully delicious stories by night. When she’s not jet setting around the country or putting steamy words to pages, you’ll find her tending an expansive garden, baking something wonderfully sweet, or out exploring the beautiful scenery of TN. Her love for travel, both in real life and through the pages of history, continuously fuels her imagination. For Lauren, the best romances—like the best adventures—are the ones that leave you breathless and longing for more.

I am SOOOO sad that the Secrets of the Seas series is OVER but what a phenomenal book to finish it out with!
I adored Abigail from her introduction in Waves of Desire, and I am so glad to see her get her happily ever after as well. This from the get-go was a fun filled story! and I loved the through line that Lauren wove into all 3 books (Thorne iykyk) I also loved our jump to New Orleans even though I adore Savannah! We still had action, love, and some spicy scenes.
Lucien was so tormented, and it was amazing to watch him shed his shell the more in love he became with Abigail! The way that man took care of her, SWOON!
I will now eagerly be awaiting whatever Lauren writes next, but my heart is back in Savannah!

Now, if you've been here very long at all, you know, I'm not a big reader of romance novels. Yes, there are a few scattered here and there on the blog, but for the most part, I'm not particularly interested in them. Romance was more of my mom's thing, but... we did both enjoy a good historical romance.
I recently saw a video on YouTube that the historical romance sub-genre was dying, along with the various reasons why they felt it was happening - publishers not renewing contracts for authors who write historical romances, removing the old "clench covers" or "bodice ripper" covers and replacing them with illustrated/cartoonish covers, younger readers being "embarrassed" to be seen reading romance novels, and the "death of the mass market paperback". The aforementioned reasons were both mentioned in the video and in the comments. Obviously, I set out to prove that historical romance wasn't dead... by going to NetGalley. And guess what I found? Yep - historical romance!
Which brings me to Tides of Passion by Lauren Everly. This is book 3 in the Secrets of the Seas trilogy. While you probably should read the books in order, you don't necessarily need to. I was perfectly able to follow the story in this book without having read the first too books in the series.
Characters
Our female main character, Abigail, is a spoiled rich girl - yet doesn't actually act like it. I found her endearing, especially since she was more than to do things she never would have dreamed of doing back home in Savannah.
Our male main character, Lucien, is a swamp-dwelling former sailor, who is gruff and grumpy. I loved him as well, because Ms. Everly showed the raw side of grief and guilt with him.
Our villain(s) are, of course, meant to be hated, but by the end of the story, I wasn't entirely sure I should hate them. Especially knowing their motives... I just couldn't actually hate them.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere here is hard to describe. There's danger, adventure, and a lot of water/ships involved in this book. The book is set in 1803 and it feels like it. I'd say Ms. Everly did an amazing job of capturing 1803, including the newly purchased Louisiana territory. It felt real and I could picture many of the places described in the book.
Writing
Ms. Everly's writing style works well with her subject matter and is easy to read. I actually appreciated the fact that we got over the 50% mark before getting to any spicy scenes. Yes, there are a few spicy scenes, but not nearly as many as you might find in other romance books. She does the one bed, grumpy/sunshine, and forced proximity tropes well... and might I say, I'm not the biggest fan of forced proximity or one bed tropes, so that's saying something that I think they were well done.
Plot
The plot for this book is simple - girl and father are being hunted by pirates, forced to leave their home to escape, and girl falls in love with person she probably shouldn't, while being hunted by said pirates. And it works. It's good plot and the way Ms. Everly executes this plot will leave you wanting to know what's happening next in the book. You won't want to stop reading. Trust me.
Intrigue
You'd think a romance book that isn't listed as a romantic suspense or mystery would have intrigue. But this book definitely does. Why are these pirates hunting Abigail and her father? Why is Abigail's best friend's husband on the side of the pirates? There are twists and turns you'll figure out and ones you won't. But even if you do, it won't matter. And the ones I did figure out, I only figured out a few moments before reading the reveal.
Relationships
To say the relationship between Abigail and Lucien is rocky is an understatement. But then again, would it be a romance novel if there weren't issues? This isn't a rom-com book - you won't find one giant problem to overcome and then book, happily ever after. Not here. There are problems, plural. Miscommunications. Misunderstandings. And flat out stubbornness. You'll find it all and more.
Ending
The ending was perfect. I won't ruin the ending because, duh. But there are things in the epilogue that will make you happy and maybe make you a little sad, depending on how you feel about some of our characters. But the ending brings the series to a close without needing anything else to tie it together.
I gave this 4 stars because it is endearing, fun, high-stakes, and moderately paced. I really need to get copies of Books 1 and 2 in the trilogy so I can read Abigail's friends, Samantha and Josephine's, stories.

An eerie swamp, a grumpy widower, and pirates chasing their prey? Say less!
This high-seas adventure was even more fun because I got to buddy read it! We both fell in love with the moody, gothic atmosphere from the historical New Orleans to the bayou and high seas adventure!
That hurricane scene wasn’t the only thing dangerous... the spice deserves its own warning 🔥
🐊 "He won't take you. Not while I still draw breath."
Lucien and Abigail were made for each other. As a grumpy widower, Lucien tried (and totally failed) to keep Abigail at arm's length. Seeing him slowly heal, open his heart again, and finally admit how he felt was *chef's kiss*.
🐊 "For the briefest instant, he wondered if she was a ghost—because no living creature ought to look like that."
I loved seeing Abigail discover who she really is instead of living by everyone else's expectations. Their relationship felt sweet, protective, and full of undeniable chemistry!
And Lucien teaching her how to fish? EXCUSE ME... that was ridiculously swoony.
Can we talk about Pierre for a second? I absolutely adored him. Everyone needs a friend like Pierre in their life!
🐊 “This isn’t a routine trip. It’ll be dangerous. Hell, from the sound of it, we’ll be lucky to make it back in one piece.”
Pierre’s grin widened. “Sounds like my kind of voyage.”
Add in pirates, danger, unexpected twists, and plenty of swoony moments, and this was the perfect ending to an incredible series!

What an unexpected surprise. I adore historical romance books that feature a strong woman, and this book has not one, not two, but four of them.
Abigail is sheltered, not weak, innocent, but not naive. And I appreciate that she articulates what she wants and has a clear moral compass of right and wrong which really lends to understanding who she is as a character.
Lucien is the definition of grumpy, but in the most endearing and protective way. Even though he initially doesn't want Abigail in his home, he still goes out of his way to protect her and make her feel comfortable. And his story arc of learning to love again after his wife's death is really impactful - is it okay to let go? is it okay to love someone else? am I betraying you and our marriage? These questions make Lucien human and as reader I really connected with his internal struggle and learning to move on.
Also, can we take a moment to discuss the spice? WOW. Lauren knows how to write spice and it left me yearning for Lucien! And Lucien and Abigail together? Fireworks. Seriously, the spice was so good and we got it multiple times.
One last note - the plot is pirate-focused, there are high stakes, Abigail is on the run, Lucien is going after her, and I was not expecting the twists at all; it made me giddy when I got to that point. I need to go back now and reread her earlier books because this was such a delight.
Thank you Dragonblade Publishing, Inc. for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Abigail is sent to hide in the Bayou after a threat to her and her father. She meets Lucien who at first thinks she is spoilt brat, he has no time for her. He is grieving for his wife and through his grief he shut himself off from the world. But what he wasn’t expecting was for Abigail to bring life back to him.
And as the story goes on it becomes very hard for both of them to resist the pull between them.
And when a threat looms that could tear them apart, Lucien must make a decision, can he let Abigail go and deny is feelings for her or get her to stay and give himself permission to live life again💕
I hadn’t read a historical romance before and I had such a great time buddy reading again with @blueowlreads and to say I was blown away by this story is an understatement. It’s incredibly written, I loved every minute reading it , you can feel the emotional turmoil Lucien goes throughout the story wondering can he open his heart to Abigail and to love again and for Abigail she chooses him, he’s her home and her heart belong to him💕 and for a historical romance I wasn’t expecting the spice to be 🔥🔥🔥

Thank you Dragonblade and NetGalley for the E-ARC for Tides of Passion. This finale of the Secrets of the Seas trilogy has been my absolute favorite! The mystery laid out in book 1 slowly unfolds over the trilogy and the pacing for each piece of the puzzle given was pristine.
Abigail reappears throughout the first 2 books, with just enough page time to not take away from their stories, but leaves you wanting to know more about her. She is a fortunate, romantic at heart, kind FMC, who betters herself throughout the story. Lucien is a broken, grumpy hermit, who’d holler “get off my lawn” if it wasn’t already a swamp. The 1811 Bayou setting was a great change of pace and I hated every second I had to put my book down to come back to the 2026 MidWest. I found Tides to be the steamiest of the trilogy, and Lucien was FINE. Like, add a new name to your list, Fine. Both characters overcome their own fears and there are plenty of twists to the story— I fully suggest sitting down and giving this book your undivided attention.

Tides of Passion by Lauren EverlyLauren Everly delivers a thrilling finale to the Secrets of the Seas series with Tides of Passion. Abigail Ross, a society darling forced into hiding, collides with Lucien Moreau, a widower branded a madman. Their reluctant partnership sparks a grumpy/sunshine slow-burn romance set against pirate danger, government intrigue, and family secrets. The ebook flows with Everly’s signature blend of Regency elegance and high-seas adventure. The forced proximity and one bed tropes heighten tension, while Lucien’s brooding isolation contrasts beautifully with Abigail’s spirited resilience. Readers will savor the gradual trust and passion that builds between them, culminating in a satisfying, heartfelt conclusion.Perfect for fans of pirate romances, slow burn historicals, and Johanna Lindsey-style adventures, this ebook balances danger, desire and emotional depth.

This is a very exciting historical romance series. Its full of swashbuckling pirates, danger, and a story that has grown through the previous books in the series and culminates in this one. You can read and enjoy each one as a stand alone because they all have different heroes and heroines, but there is a back story that links them.
Our heroine this time has been brought up as a typical "Southern belle" . She has been protected and spoiled by her father's wealth. She is about to get a very rude awakening, and face more danger than she ever thought possible.
Our hero has been hiding from life since the death of his wife. Some things can't be hidden forever and secrets have a way of being discovered at the most unexpected times.
Great fun.

Tides of Passion is the third book in the Secrets of the Seas series. What is a historical romance without a misunderstood band of pirates?
Abigail and her father are forced to flee their home when danger comes their way. A business acquaintance hides Abigail to keep her safe.
Grieving, Lucien protects Abigail and slowly sheds the past grief as he sees what the future could hold.
There are many hidden truths, misunderstandings and lies to overcome for all involved. Including her father whose hands are far from clean.
This was a fun book to read. Lots of detail, spice and angst to enjoy.
I received an ARC from NetGaalley for an unbiased review.

Pirates, Thrills, Romance
A new author for me and I love stories about pirates although this pirate story was not about the pirate since he was just a villain.
The story deals with two delightful and intriguing characters that had many emotional issues to deal with.
Those issues turned this story into an enjoyable story that has a high amount of passion. It is certainly fan worthy.
I enjoyed the story and the ending was marvelous and complete.
Mature Advisory:3/5

Abigail really goes from the fire to the frying pan - from having to leave her home, to being kidnapped. I did feel for Lucien, having lost his former wife. His grief was very real. It ended up being a mix for me about having empathy for the two mmcs and yet also disliking some qualities about them.
Thank you to Dragonblade for the copy of this book. Opinions are my own.
