The unconditional love that we all long for can be experienced in the practice of loving-kindness. In this popular form of meditation, the love inherent to our own nature is gradually expanded until it embraces infinite beings. Tulku Thondup introduces a new four-stage format for this practice, rooted in the traditional teachings of Tibetan Buddhism: We first meditate on the Buddha of Loving-Kindness as a body of unconditional love and receive his blessings. This spontaneously awakens his unconditional love in our heart. We then find the whole world reflecting back to us as a world of love and peace. Finally, we remain in oneness in the realization of ultimate love.
Interesting. Theravada got gospeled, & Buddha as Christ figure. Not a problem for me personally but several times while I read this I made that Scooby doo what-the confuzed noise. RrreaaHh? Wait, what? *Checks cover again*
Just…not for me. A very theistic approach to Buddhism which is not what I’m in it for. Also, the meditation practices outlined here are really…not for beginners to meditation. It’s a weird combination of esoteric Buddhist visualization with a Christ-like deity. Which might work for folks! But not for me.
Excellent book on Buddhist perspective of invoking and channeling the love and light of the one infinite creator (avalokitesvara) via loving kindness meditation. Also worth archiving.
