Carmela is a werewolf who's sole purpose in life is to breed the next generation. She's practically held captive by her father, never allowed to go out or be herself. Until one night he gives her some leeway but of course that's when everything goes wrong.
This book is set in the future where all comforts we now know are gone. Society has completely changed, gone is the ability to get new clothes, phones or anything that we think of as being a basic. The supernaturals are known about and hunted down by government agencies on a daily basis, and human casualties mean nothing to these hunters.
The subject of abuse is very in your face in this book through physical, emotional and mental scenes. This story is a lot darker and depicts "alpha males" in a darker light. I think it's extremely powerful and can be very uncomfortable to read about, but it does show how these types of abuses affect people which is what the author is going for.
As you read you start out with Carmela's point of few but as you progress in the story you get an additional two more POVs. I didnt mind Carmela's and the vampires, but I didn't really care about reading about the third person. She just didn't have a place in the story for me, I guess.
Like I said, this book is pretty dark and is a LOT different than most of the paranormal romances I've come across or read. I thought it was well written but not for me.
18+ This is a darker read with the subject of abuse being a biggie. There's also talk about rape.

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!!
The cover definitely made me notice it which is why I bought it :)
This is the first part in this novella serial series. If you are not sure what all the means, it is simple :) Novella is the length and for this book about 60 pages. Serial series are where one book is broken into parts or episodes like a TV series. Only with a book serial you can miss any of the parts or you will be missing major content. It must be read in order :) This serial is not complete yet, so this means waiting in between parts and usually at the end of each part is a cliffhanger. If you don’t like cliffhangers, the solution is simple, wait until the whole thing is complete and then read it :) Personally I like not having to wait a whole year for the new book, so I don’t mind serials which are usually published monthly. I am know sure on the rating of this book, but I’m thinking adults only with the violence and abuse.

Her dad needs his butt kick, her mom is abused, and her cousin….well I’m not sure what to think of her yet but so far she needs to be slapped. Derek is a sexy vampire, and he seems like he is a good guy so far….helping out. Brendan only showed up at the end, so I don’t know enough yet to decide if I like him yet. Carmela so far is unsure about both, so we will see if she chooses one or the other or who knows both :) There is some action, and there is definitely some underhanded things going on, but I’m not sure exactly what yet. I just know I liked it and I’m ready for part two :)
I recommend this book to people who like serials with shifters and vampires and that is unique. Off to read the next part :)

Beneath the Broken Moon part one: Another one knock out the park. This storyline is about a wolf shifter and a vampire romance. A great series from Sarah Makela as in all her books it captures you and don't want it to end. Just in part one there is magic, love, conflict, fantasy, action adventure, political conflict, something for everyone this series. The dialog is so original, imaginative, exciting. With characters that are handsome, sexy, intriguing, little shy, engaging, fascinating and beautiful. Sarah weaves with her expert talent, fantasy paranormal love and she tease us with a story that makes you want it to never end but as this is only the first part WOW. With a cliffhanger that makes you anxious for Part Two of a series.
The storyline takes place in the future. The world is in turmoil from nuclear blast to the moon almost causing the destruction of humans. Now the paranormal is part of normal. The population of humans feels threaten by the werewolves and wants to either kill or capture them for experiment. The werewolves are almost extinct and is use for a food sources for vampire. The vampires and the werewolves has always been age old enemies. Some vampires craved werewolf blood because it is a divine elixir that like a drug to them because it holds a strange allure of power that the werewolves has because of the moon. This just makes the centuries of feuds between the two even more mortal enemies.
Carmela Santiago is a werewolf who lives with an abusive and very manipulative father. She feels her only value is her ability have pups and therefore she is able to mate an alpha werewolf. Her father intends to prearranged a marriage with someone she doesn't even know. Her job is to become a future Alpha Queen and spend her time doing nothing but producing pups so that there is more of her species. But after seeing the horror of her father and mother's loveless marriage and being raised by a cruel and abusive father. Carmela doesn't want to be a part of a arranged mating. She wants to fall in love with her mate and he her so that their life will be full of tenderness and respect. But that's just a dream because she has a noble birth and her father has already decided her future.
Derek Ashmore is a vampire who has lived for centuries and had magic. But before he became a vampire he was a medical doctor. Now Derek is a member of the high Council. But as he watched the beautiful werewolf run from the human hunters he made a split second decision and pull her into his home.
Carmela was hardly ever allowed to leave her home but for once her father allows her to go to the theater with her cousin Chandra. But Carmela and Chandra wanted to stay and watch the late show. Now she wishes she had listen to her gut and stayed home but she didn't want to miss the theater. Now the theater was being raided by the Cazador, human hunters who killed werewolves or capture them for experiments to test their weapons. As Carmela is running away she is shot in the arm by the overweight hunter to slow her down for his partner to catch her. suddenly she is running in the alley she is pulled in a door by a vampire. She thinks the vampire is handsome but werewolves couldn't think vampires was handsome because they are enemies. Derek Ashmore couldn't believe what he had done saved the beautiful werewolf. He gives hisself a excused she needs medical attention. Why else would he do such a foolish thing, they were enemies after all. His first thought was he couldn't let her leave. He wasn't sure what do with her. When Carmela awaken she began to talk and told him that she was to be given to another werewolf arranged by her father and if he let her she wouldn't tell about his home. He just had to trust that she wouldn't tell anyone about him or he could make her forget the whole thing. But could he forget her. Beautiful she werewolf, handsome, sexy vampire and a handsome alpha wolf.

This is the first in a series although I was able to read it as part of another group of books. This is a book made for adults only with the not only the physical and sexual violence Carmela, her cousin Chandra and her mother suffer at the hand of her father but the violence others are subjected to.. Carmela finds herself drawn to a vampire Derek, who rescued her but the two groups are sworn enemies and although she tries to fight her feelings for him she finds herself fleeing to his house for protection once again. She is also drawn to the werewolf, Brendan, her parents hoped she would mate with. The three are then forced to join together, with the city vampires and members of Brendan's fathers pack, to save Chandra and Derek's friend, Elliot. I found the book a suspenseful read because there were so many twists and turns and you never knew what was going to happen next. I am holding out hope that in the next book Chandra will find someone to care for her like Brendan and Derek care for Carmela.

Starting into this book I wasn't sure what to expect with it being the 1st werewolf/vampire I've ever read but once starting I had to finish. I love it! The detail and descriptive writing is great, plus I'm wondering when book 2 is coming....I must know if Carmela and Derek get to.....not leaving no spoilers sorry. But if you like romance,drama,action,and suspense then you need to read this.

I received this in a big bundle of free books for my kindle. This was okay. It was a little short but I get that it was a part of a serial. I will have to look into the rest of the serial.

Very disappointing book! Before reading this review, you should know that I have never bothered to review a book before. I am ONLY reviewing this book because the rating of 3.8 is so very suspicious, and I think readers should be aware of what they are getting.
I realize that everyone has their own take on books. Most goodreads reviews seem to include a ton of negative reviews as well as the positive reviews. This one, shockingly, doesn't. Most of the reviews I read were glowing.....and led me to expect a lot more from the book than it delivered.
I am not a harsh critic. I often quite enjoy books others found a lot of fault with. I rarely notice things like character develop and world building. Most books I just enjoy and don't even think about those things.
Perhaps that is why this book was such a disappointment. Because I did notice the writing. There was nothing really wrong with the book- it was just really boring and...lacking. More so than just about any other book I've ever read. Which is saying a lot!
The characters weren't well formed or very likeable, the writing felt awkward. I'm not sure how to describe the writing. It just didn't flow. What the characters said and did seemed stilted and wrong. Though the cover is very sexual, there were no sex scenes in the first book. (However, there is physical abuse and incest.)
I almost never quit a book, but if this book had been any longer than its 70 pages, it definitely would have been DNF!
Anyway, if you like stories about vampires and werewolves, you might like this. Just go into it with low expectations and you'll be fine.

Carmela know she should've just stayed home that night, but she went to the movies with her cousin. When the Cazador's attacked the theater, Carmela was making her escape when she was snatched inside a dark house, with her pursuers outside she could make a sound or fight the said snatched even. Only just great she was snatched by a vampire while shot in the shoulder.
Darek couldn't take the chance that the little wolf wouldn't go tell her pack where he was, that maybe just the lie he kept saying so he didn't have to face the truth that Carmela was something special for reason unknown to him. He wanted her but the species where at war it was to dangerous to even go there. When she leaped from the upstairs window, he didn't see that one coming. No what to do?
Carmela meets her father's suitor for her, Brendan. When they spot Derek in the city, Carmela is hit with the pang of guilt of leaving how she did.
This book may hold a few triggers inside of abuse and sexual content,The scene is heard not told in part one. Over all a very wonderful moving story.

This is a very action packed, emotional roller coaster. Carmela is such a strong character who has basically been kept a prisoner in her own home most of her life. She's been promised to a young alpha, but hasn't met him yet, and fears he'll be just like her father. Just before they're due to meet, a rare night out with her cousin ends in gunfire and both girls running for their lives. A stranger puts his own life on the line to save her. Derek is a vampire and they don't normally go around rescuing werewolves, but he's drawn to Carmela and can't resist. He tells her she has to stay, for both their safety, but she leaves anyway, fearing for her cousin. If course, her father takes out his anger on them anyway and then sends her on her date to meet her soon to be mate. Brendan is instantly attracted to her, but yet again, her night out is interrupted with gunfire. This time Derek saves them both, but may have just put all of their lives in greater danger.
Wonderfully written with lots of twists and turns and great characters.

Camela is a young woman who has just been attacked by the Cazador which are humans who murder paranormal beings after the moon was split and now there are three moons on earth and things are definitely not what they use to be. Because she is special to her people but treated worst that a slave. She is frightened for her mother. She meets a vampire Derek but they both know that is not acceptable he saves her life and she flees. She is being put up to the upper echelon best suited for her fathers needs. She very unhappy but trying to do what is required of her by going out with Brendan. Very interesting story line the characters I find somewhat interesting. This is part one of a series. I purchased this book.

Carmela is the alpha's daughter, but the alpha is a mean jerk who treats her badly. So you end up hating him from the start of the book.
Carmela and her cousin are out at the movies when the movie house is a tacked.
There is sooooo much tension and drama in this story it just pulls you in to what is happening in the attack and then latter dealing with the dad wow!
the story is written in the first person and every so often it changes from different characters. I couldn't put it down I had to see what happened to Carmela. It seemed no matter now hard she tried it was never good enough for her alpha. I am hooked!

Sarah, Sarah, Sarah!! Why, must you end it like that I need more like now!!!! Omg! This book was really good!! Carmela is a werewolf with a strict father, she is destined to be mated with another wolf. And being the only born child has no choice. Things change when she is saved by a vampire named Derek from the Cazador, who are basically supernatural hunters. And I have a feeling things are going to take an interesting turn in the next book!! I can't wait to read it!!!

Carmela is a werewolf who is to take a mate her father chooses. Her feelings are not considered and she is living in an abusive home not being allowed to do anything. The one night she gets freedom she has to run for her life. Now her father really will be mad.

Her father has arranged marriage for her and she is hoping that once she's mated, she'll be happy. She going to learn some things about herself when her life really gets interesting. Enjoy I did. This is part of a bundle.

Love the characters names! I like how there are a werewolf and a vampire involved in the story! It suspense, romantic and well written! I liked how Derek became possessive of Carmela when he saw with another man. I liked how it ended! It was a great story!

Beneath The Broken Moon is a brand new shifter/vampire romance series from Sarah Makela and it totally rocks. It has a little bit of everything I love in a great book! If you love fantasy, magic, adventure, social, political and family conflict, action, paranormal beings, romance and angst, then this is definitely the book for you! Please be aware, this is Part One of a series, not a stand alone story, so there is a cliffhanger. The story is exciting, original and well written. The characters are fascinating, intriguing and engaging. And this is only the beginning! The story takes place in a somewhat dystopian future world shattered by a nuclear event on the moon causing the near destruction of the human race. The remaining humans are now aware of the nocturnes and seeing them as a threat, seek to kill or capture them. What better way for a government or the rich to thrive than by oppressing the less fortunate and simultaneously keep down the population. Werewolves are now almost extinct and food sources for vampires are scarce. If you love fantasy, magic, adventure, social, political and family conflict, action, paranormal beings, romance and angst, then this is definitely the book for you! Please be aware, this is Part One of a series, not a stand alone story, so there is a cliffhanger. The story is exciting, original and well written. The characters are fascinating, intriguing and engaging. And this is only the beginning! The story takes place in a somewhat dystopian future world shattered by a nuclear event on the moon causing the near destruction of the human race. The remaining humans are now aware of the nocturnes and seeing them as a threat, seek to kill or capture them. What better way for a government or the rich to thrive than by oppressing the less fortunate and simultaneously keep down the population. Into a dreary and dangerous post-apocalyptic world there's a war waging between humans and nocturnal creatures (werewolves and vampires) that has them constantly being hunted and fearful of being turned in. This group of hunters, The Cazador, are a deadly and mysterious military group whose insidious plans are just beginning to emerge as they not only kill nocturnes but experiment on them as well. As if living in fear of The Cazador wasn't bad enough, there's the centuries-long battle between werewolves and vampires fueled by arrogance and bigotry. In the middle of all this chaos fate has brought the desperate and injured werewolf Carmela to the doorstep of her vampiric savior Derek for an unforgettable meeting that profoundly affects them and will ultimately change the course of their lives.

She's jealous of the opportunities Carmela has as she sees endless abuse in her future from her uncle and it leads to some unpleasant moments between her and Carmela that I fear could get uglier in the future and diminish my sympathy.
Derek has been a vampire a long time and you can sense his becoming tired. He lives a solitary existence pulling away from vampiric duties he once partook in. His only friend is fellow vampire Elliot who provided some comic relief and is trying to keep Derek active. Meeting Carmela excited Derek but confused him as he knows their being together would result in death for them both. He can't get her out of his mind and seeing her with another man brings out a possessive side that I look forward to seeing more of. Derek is a good man, not overtly violent as some vampires are, and his loneliness ate at me and has me rooting for him to claim Carmela for his own.
This was a fast-paced story, with almost too much happening at times to fully flesh out, teeming with sensuality. Carmela's father is truly vile with his deeds repugnant. He's losing control as seen through more and more marks being left on his wife and niece Chandra, and his increasing vileness of acts towards Carmela too. Derek is the only bright spot in her life and thoughts of him sustain her through the violence being done to her. With his possessive side kicking in I look forward to his actions in the next installment as he seems to be a man who takes what he wants...and right now he wants Carmela no matter what the fallout might be. With these strong main characters comes equally compelling secondary characters in the mysterious and playful Elliot and the battered and bruised Chandra. Their short time in the story left a large impact and I hope to see more of them. From the first page to the last this tale laid compelling groundwork for the future, fully immersing me in this gritty and warring world, and has me on edge waiting for the next installment. Fans of the paranormal will want to jump onboard for all the excitement and romance just starting with Beneath the Broken Moon: Part One.

The only thought floating through my head was the almost-kiss
WHOA!! and WOW!! Now THIS is a story that I could oh so happily and eagerly get lost in! In fact I just did! Sarah has definitely outdone herself with this one! I love the mix of species, the hints at what is going on in this world, the little bit of a darker tone to the storyline, but it does have some humor that offsets these parts or lightens things up, not that it is needed mind you! There is so much going on! Sexy parts, funny parts, darker parts, bits that break your heart, bits that make you gasp or say WTF?! You know, everything that makes a great story well…great and keeps you holding your breath and craving more! While this is not “horror” darker, it does have a great deep story that begs you to uncover all of its secrets! This is definitely not a light & fluffy story, which in my opinion is completely fantastic and the perfect draw for me! I am not usually a fan of stories told from the views of multiple first persons, but this one is different. Sarah has written it very beautifully and with each chapter switching viewpoints means that it doesn't flip 'all the time' which makes it quite easy to follow and it also gives insight from each character, letting us in on their thoughts. However it doesn't tell the same scene over & over again from each character which I think is why I am enjoying it very much! It may pick up on the last bit of the last character, but then it takes over and goes forward with the other characters story. Carmella is an interesting person whom I can't wait to get to know better. Same with Derek. I did find it quite interesting that Sarah has chosen to tell actually very little background on the characters, the different species involved or even how many even exist in this world. The story just starts off running - literally - and you get bits & pieces here and there that keep the storyline moving forward while also giving you the insight as to what is going on and why. This actually drew me in right away and I found myself very disappointed when I got to the ending! I cannot wait to keep reading! I NEED to know what is going to happen! If Carmella doesn't want Derek, I will happily take him off of her hands for her. I haven’t read that many of Sarah’s book as of yet, in fact I have recently started to work my way through them all, but this story is by far and away my favorite! I personally think, again having only read a couple of her books so far, that this is in fact her best work to date! I hope that there won’t be too long of a wait between each part of this story! I am usually a very impatient reader, but this one has me itching to get the ENTIRE series RIGHT NOW! So yes, I recommend this to anyone who likes a great, slightly darker, but with some humor, sexy & oh so awesome paranormal story!

Werewolf Carmela Santiago is attacked by hunters and bearly survives. She's rescued by a vampire, an enemy of her kind. But he saves her by removing the silver bullet she was shot with. When she wants to leave the vampire's house he refuses, but Carmela isn't taking no and flees through a window.
Vampire Derek Ashmore sees a werewolf in trouble and comes to her aid. He knows he shouldn't, she's the enemy, but there is something about her that draws her to him, there's an attraction he doesn't understand. When she escapes, he lets her go as he knows they can never be together.
When Cole sees Carmela out with her mate-to-be, he feels a jealousy that burns in his chest. When his caught watching them, he realises that his friend has been observing the situation. But it doesn't matter as nothing can ever happen. They are from two different worlds.
This was a fascinating world of werewolves and vampires. The storyline is a little different to others I've read but still captivating. Cole and Carmela, the main characters, are interesting and likable, but as they are still evolving it's difficult to say exactly. There is parts of this book that I'm not sure needed to be there. I understand what the author is trying to say and explain, but I'm just not sure if it works or not. Otherwise, I found this book enjoyable and I'm looking forward to book two in this series!

BENEATH THE BROKEN MOON – SARAH MAKELA
Beneath the broken moon is a great read and a nice introduction into the characters. For the broken moon series I would have liked more information as to how the moon broke, why and what happened after.
Carmela Santiago is a female werewolf and in this time frame females are needed for breeding as the race is becoming extinct. Her abusive A**hole of a father has a fellow shifter chosen to be her mate she is not at all in favour of this.
While out with her cousin, hunters attack the movie theatre while escaping she is shot and rescued by a vampire Derek Ashmore. Has she gone from bad to worse as werewolves and vampires are sworn enemies. She agrees to go on a date with the man that her father chose. Who seems to be a kind and caring man (werewolf) Brendan Kelly he is not at all what she is expecting. Will this sexy vampire be the end of Carmela’s heart or will she settle for the man her father has chosen for her?
As this is not set in our timeline I felt some more back ground information would have been helpful to clarify what has happened and how they arrived at how they have reached where they are.

How could a night go so wrong? Carmela and Chandra were just out to have a good time. Just a little fun when the place they were at was raided by the Cazador. Could they both escape and make it out of this alive?
Carmela was destine to be the Alpha Queen. Her father had plans for her and it did not matter whether she wanted to mate with the alpha her father chosen for her, for she did not have a say. Her father was a cruel man. I truly hate him. I don’t believe that man could love anything. Hope before this series is done bad falls upon him. Carmela never thought that she would be saved by a vampire by the name of Derek. Vampires and Werewolves were mortal enemies. Did he wish her harm? Did she look like easy prey for him?
Derek never dreamed he would put his life on the line for a werewolf. He just could not get her out of his mind. Will things end madly for him since he could not resist saving her? Will he ever be able to get her out of his head?
I can already tell that this is going to be a great series. There is so much chemistry between Carmela and Derek. I love paying attention to the way the authors describe the voice of the male characters. In this one it was his accented voice was smooth and husky like sex on silk sheets..lol Love it. I also loved the fact that his breath smelt like mints. If you love shifters and vampire books you will love this one.

The characters arel written well they show a different side to shifter relations than most paranormal books do. The story takes place in the future where there has been a nuclear event on the moon causing the near destruction of the human race. Humans are now aware that shifters and vampires existance. Humans see them as a threat and have created hunters to kill or capture them. Werewolves are now almost extinct and their culture has become all about influence and producing offspring. Vampires are stonger and enemies of werewolves. They have been feuding for centuries and find each other mortal enemies. Werewolf Carmela Santiago doesn't agree with having arranged mates but she will do what she is told because her father is abusive. Her father believes her only value is her womb and her ability to be mated to an alpha werewolf Brendan Kelly. Carmela is rescued by a sexy vampire Derek Ashmore and she can't understand her immediate attraction to him. This leads Carmela to extremely mixed up emotions. What will she have to do to escape the life she is forced to live?
