She’s running from a past, he’s duty-bound to protect her.
He stands on the other side of sorrow and despair with a love so vast and strong it reaches into her soul and sparks the courage to become the woman she dares.
Cora Williams is an ex-con with no place to go but Gibbs City, Missouri. A small mid-western town where she hopes to remain undisturbed and unobtrusive. With her nephew Jack, her wants are simple, to hide from the horrors of her past.
Sheriff Virgil Carter is a WW2 veteran with demons of his own, but Parker County is his to protect. That includes a young, beautiful woman newly released from prison who longs to be left alone.
Love often comes like sleep, softly, quietly and unexpectedly. You just have to close your eyes and dream.
It stops in the middle of the story leaving two main mysteries unsolved - made me angry.
This is half the length of a regular novel. I don’t mind a series as long as each book has a completion - like Harry Potter. This book does not. It feels more like a TV soap opera - tune in tomorrow for more.
I enjoyed the first part. It kept my interest. But not the last half. Events and dialogue were predictable, nothing special or different. Word gets out that Cora is an ex-con. Some people treat her bad, others treat her nice. Cora is a Mary Sue character - smart and perfect in all ways as she responds to terrible circumstances. The story lacks interesting characters.
The two main mysteries are: What did Cora and others do that put her in jail for five years? After Cora was released from jail, someone was murdered. What is that about and why was the body place in Cora’s former cell?
DATA: Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 177 pages. Swearing language: strong with religious swear words but not often used. Sexual content: none. Setting: 1947 Missouri. Copyright: 2015. Genre: romantic suspense.
It is a good read BUT the set up of "books" is just a ploy for the reader to spend a lot of money. I got "book 1" as a promo free download, mid story that "book" ends and each subsequent "book" is $3.99. If I had gotten a full book as the free download and it was the quality of what I read I would gladly buy other books by the author, and frequently do. But because the first "book" did not qualify to me as a book I won't pay a bunch of money to read a serial.
I liked this book. The story of a woman doctor who is sent to prison and then released and totally abandoned by her family except her Aunt Rose.
I wasn't paying attention when I put this book on my Kindle to see that it is a series. I hope the second book will show up someday on the free books. I would like to continue the story.
'I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review'
Cora was a respected and successful doctor until she shot her sisters husband. She had her reasons and she would do it again, however she may not have had such harsh sentencing if her father had not seen to it that she got punished to the fullest. After years in prison she is out on probation with no where to go and no money. Then she finds out that her aunt left her, her house when she passed so she goes there. Only she's not alone, she also has her nephew. While on probation she has to check in weekly with the local law enforcement. This scares her to death as she had experiences in prison that she doesn't want to talk about let alone think about and any type of law enforcement puts the fear of god into her. She did not expect Virgil. He just won't leave her alone and it's not that he distrusts her, he looks out for her.
My Opinion:
I have read almost all of Geri's books and loved them all. This one however is on a whole new level. I don't just give it 5 stars. I give it 5+ stars. I could not put it down. It was riveting and emotional and although it is very different from the authors other work it probably in my eyes anyways some of her best work.
This was pure delight to be transported to a time period that I have only studied at school, though I must also note from a different country.. Don’t let that sway you. History, even in a fictional sense, done fairly accurately, is always a joy to read and to learn from. To see how far we’ve come and have we learnt from the past, to live in our present and how our future is to be shaped.
Take a step back into the past and reminisce on a time that was anything but easy or simple, for the town of Gibbs City, Missouri. Post WW2, 1947. You’ll be drawn into the life of Cora and Virgil. Their story, their journey isn’t going to be hearts and roses. well not yet. It’s ambivalent. It’s a lack of trust in men in general and Virgil in particular. It’s a system that has filled Cora with fear and horror. it’s learning to start over from scratch, when you have little to no resources and little to show who you were and who you’ve now become. All because of mistakes made and no one, not even family, to stand in your corner.
You’re an ex-con. That fight and the prejudices that come along, won’t be an easy battle to overcome, but Cora wants to keep her head down, live quietly, work hard, to ensure her a new start.
Though mistrust stands in their way, it will be the kind hearted, generous town sheriff who wants to protect his town and the new lady that has arrived, that will turn their lives upside down. He will be her champion, along with some beautiful and budding friendships, that will pave the way for Cora to find herself. She wants no trouble, nor attention, yet trouble has a way of finding her. Trouble is definitely stirring and growing.
It’s background is steeped with the hardships facing a small country town following the war. The author, I believe has depicted the triumphs, the struggles, the prejudices, that both men and women faced, Their mannerisms, their fortitude and resilience to face adversity both socially and economically within their family, friendships and as a community.
It’s a story of courage, learning to take second chances when those chances seem so scary. Learning to trust and survive, when trust is so very fragile and resources are at best… minimal. Somehow, some way… Cora will find inner strength to make it work. It’s definitely worth an investment into Virgil and Cora’s life and the paths they will travel to find love. Easy… no! Definitely worth the hardships and troubles they will face as truths and lies are exposed.
** You need to take note: this is just Episode 1 of an 8 part episode of the Women of Courage series. It does end with no conclusion - there is still so much more to delve into with Virgil and Cora in further episodes. It will be a costly to get to it’s conclusion. Maybe something the author needs to consider for future books written this way. The concept of episodes is not wrong… but price point does need to be considered for the reader/consumer to keep them coming back for more. That’s my only slight sticky point from a retail/marketing perspective and doesn’t detract from a wonderful read. You need to decide if it’s worth your time and investment.
I wanted a low key story to read that was realistic but suspenseful, and that is what I got from this story. It wasn't corny in any way but a simple story to read. Shady characters, lovable characters, a bit of mystery thrown in. It's like a small town, "everyone knows each other" kind of environment. I loved it!! Great for just a simple read without all the emotional head trauma. It does leave you hanging though as there are two mysteries not solved in this particular episode.
This story kind of abruptly ends and needs to be continued with the next book, Episode 2. If you look at the series, there are 8 of them. Not sure I REALLY want to continue the series because it will end up costing a bit of money as the books are short novels (this one was like 200 pages). I hate when authors do this because what used to be one complete novel back in the day are now serials and that ends up costing just as much as say a hardback novel that was 1,000 pages for a complete detailed story. This first episode was free, but the next one is $3.99, so do the math on a total of 7 that you have to pay for and it gets quite expensive. It really all depends on if you care about that or not.
This was a great start to a series. I downloaded this as a free book on my Kobo and just finished the first installment. Wow! I really enjoyed it it was a quiet and unassuming read but very heartwarming.
I’ve read a few reviews and I have seen some comments about people being ticked off that they have to pay for the next installment to read. I don’t think that’s a terrible thing, authors have to make a living after all this is their craft they work at it just like we work at our own crafts. The book was actually about three hours long in reading so I thought it was a good amount of time and the next installments aren’t that expensive and actually quite cheap to my mind so I don’t mind paying. They’re quite good so I will keep reading.
I don't often read books set in the past, but the 1947 setting described in Book One of Love Released didn't seem too much different than current time, so I would recommend it to people who don't usually like historical fiction.
I would not call "Book One" a stand alone novel. The last page of the book has a very short intro for Book Two and ends on a cliffhanger, so you'll want to have Book Two available shortly after you finish this one.
Quick, but enjoyable read. Some problems with word usage and grammer, which almost put me off right at the beginning, but the characters and story are engaging. I do feel that the books are kept short in order to have a longer series that involves more purchases. I read these 208 pages in an evening.
What a wonderful story of hardship and friendship. Cora is an ex con and ends up taking care of her nephew Jack. Life in the small town hasn’t gone the way she hoped. The sheriff befriends her and looks out for her and Jack. Not my usual genre but I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to read it.
I hate books like this where you have to read 5 more books to gin st the story. This isn't a series where each book comes to a natural conclusion. L seems to me that one long story was written and then divided up into several books. It's like ending on a random chapter. The story line was good, but the presentation is what put me off.
Cora pulls herself up by her bootstraps and shows a woman can be strong and overcome adversities. Also a mother will always protect and love her cub. The county sheriff adds his kindness and warmth to help Cora. Cora is strong and will succeed no matter what ..............
Great book. Love story with some mystery mixed in. I will probably read the next one even though I usually don't like having to read to read books in a series in order to find out how something ends. I usually like to read a book that has an ending. But this was pretty good so now I am curious as to what happens next.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I am looking forward to reading the next in the series. I loved the characters but was a little disappointed by the sudden ending - such a cliff-hanger !!!
The characters seem to be mostly good or mostly bad. It's a depressing setup, and just when things start looking up, it ended. I was not expecting it to end so abruptly, before the story was finished. Kind of aggravating.
I don't do book reviews but it really grinds my goat when a story that is a good read is so broken up into multiple books. This "episode" enticed me to read another but no more. The first 2 "episodes " should have been, in my opinion, 1 book.
Would have given a 5 star if it had a ending. You’ll need to read the next book to get answers. But I liked the story as far as it went in this book. Should have said Part1 not episode.
Excellent story but did not realize that it is not a "stand alone" book you must purchase the series to finish the story (bit disappointing) leaves you lacking after completing book 1
What a waste of time! I was going to give this book 3 stars until I got to the ending. Be warned!!! It ends right in the middle of the book. I wouldn't even consider it a cliff hanger. It's like, one minute they are at a hardware store getting ready to buy stuff to fix up the house, and then it just ends. Obviously the author wants you to buy the next books in the series but this book needed to be a lot better if the author expected me to keep going. And I would have been fine having read just this one book even though I didn't love it if there was at least some kind of conclusion to it. And then have it continue on in the second book for those who were into the story. But no. This ending is so unsatisfying that it ruins the entire rest of the book. At first, I was liking where the story was going. I like the unique premise where she has been in prison and is now trying to get back on her feet. I like that the lead male and lead female weren't all over each other instantly. I hate nothing more than insta love. There weren't any stupid romance novel cliches and the book felt very genuine and original. So I thought I was really going to enjoy this book. But as I got further along, I started getting impatient. It got way too slow and boring. The interactions between Cora and Virgil were ALWAYS very very short and simple. The entire book. The author desperately needed to construct a situation in which I could see them really interact. See them start to have chemistry. See them getting to really know eachother. But nope. There is not one situation in which they interact for a good amount of time. I like a slow building romance, but not a sand still romance. Like for example, here is an excerpt from the book during one of Cora and virgils encounters:
"So we're still on?" "Oh yeah, why don't we make a day of it?" Her whole body looked tense. "I don't know." "Come on lighten up a little." "I don't trust men." "You know you're safe with me." She chewed her bottom lip making it redder and riper than before. "I know that, but still." "I don't want you to be afraid." "And I don't want to be hurt." He left and went to the office...
What??? He just left after she said that? Wait ! No! Have the conversation people!! That's want a romance is all about. I want to listen to them together. I want to hear their conversations and through those conversations see them becoming closer and trusting one another etc. Why did the author end the conversation at that moment? He left and went to the office??? Really? I get the idea behind leaving an audience hanging, but it needs to be done correctly. It needs to feel like an ending, but an open ending. Like a mini cliff hanger. But judging by the way this whole book ended, the author needs a little help with her endings. And maybe it gets better in the next book with their romance and them getting to know one another, but I've just lost interest because of how slow this first book is. Plus, I see there are a bunch more books in the series and I don't want to risk continuing if the author ends each book the way she ended this first book.
This is the first book in a very long serial (at least 8 books) where a number of women of courage are explored as part of a continuing storyline.
It is set in 1950s small town USA – where redneck attitudes prevail and there is a an amount of resentment and anger from men who have come back from the war to find the economy tanking and no jobs for them.
Our heroine in book 1 was a surgeon who was sent to prison – as orchestrated by her father – for what was apparently attempted murder. But she is released after 5 years, early.
In this age, qualifying as a surgeon, let alone as a female surgeon was very difficult and expensive. Such a woman attracted a great deal of attention, resentment and envy.
When released from prison she finds that her father has emptied her bank accounts – to pay for her lawyers he claims even though he is very wealthy – thrown away all her clothes, and ensured that she cannot get her medical licence back or work in a hospital.
She is now penniless and homeless.
She is helped by servants to obtain some clothes and is given a ride to the dilapidated house she inherited from her aunt in this very small town we mentioned.
She arrives with no more clothes than those on her back – and – her nephew! Her father had been looking after her sister’s child – in a very grudging way, never seeing him and letting nannies look after him – but once she is released from prison, he decides that it is her job to look after the child.
He even made her the legal guardian of the child.
And so she has to find a way to survive, with courage, for herself and the child.
And in this town she meets several women who have a very hard life. And she forms very strong bonds with them as support her through these trials.
The story tells us about small towns and the lies and gossip that they are rife with. About secrets and that what is on the surface is often not what is underneath.
And gradually, bits and pieces of what life in the women’s prison emerge. Where guards were largely unchecked in their behaviour. And as result, what happened to the women in their charge.
I find this a compelling look into life for women in prison at the time and the power that men still had over their life.
This book was given to me by the author for review.
This is an introduction to the 'Women of Courage' series and whilst it may only be a short novella, the author has managed to construct an interesting story line; one that has managed to capture my interest so much, I have already purchased the second book of Amazon.
The story is set in 1947 and we as the readers, are introduced to Cora Williams as she is being released from jail after serving her time. The confident surgeon who entered the jail five years earlier has been beaten down and only a shell of that woman remains.
Ostracized by her parents, she is driven by the family butler to Gibbs River to start a new life with her nephew Jack. She has no money (her father took everything she owned) besides a home belonging to her late Aunt Rose.
Sheriff Virgil Carter feels a strong sense of protectiveness towards Cora Williams. He believes Cora is entitled to a new life in Gibbs River despite her criminal record but other members of the town are opposed to his way of thinking. He assists Cora every way possible to ensure she is given the chance she deserves.
Whilst there is attraction between the Sheriff and Cora, her distrust of men in general, hinders any possible romance.
