The Warlock Brothers of Book One

Mason Blackmoor just can’t compete with his brothers, much less his father. They represent the epitome of black magic, strong, dark, and wicked, and though Mason tries to live up to his respected lineage, most of the spells he casts go awry. To make matters worse, his active power has yet to kick in. While his brothers wield lightning and harness the cold, Mason sits on the sidelines, waiting for the moment when he can finally enter the magical game.

When a dead body is discovered on the football field of his high school, Mason meets Drake Carpenter, the new kid in town. Drake’s confident demeanor and quick wit rub Mason the wrong way. Drake is far too self-assured for someone without an ounce of magical blood in his body, and Mason aims to teach him a lesson—like turn him into a roach. And if he’s lucky, maybe this time Mason won’t be the one turned into an insect.

Not surprisingly, the dislike is mutual, and Drake does nothing to dispel Mason’s suspicion that the sexy boy with a southern drawl is somehow connected to the murder.

If only Mason didn’t find himself inexplicably spell bound whenever they are together, they might actually find out what danger hides in the shadows.

Jacob Z. Flores lives a double life. During the day, he is a respected college English professor and mid-level administrator. At night and during his summer vacation, he loosens the tie and tosses aside the trendy sports coat to write man on man fiction, where the hard ass assessor of freshmen level composition turns his attention to the firm posteriors and other rigid appendages of the characters in his fictional world.

Summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, provide Jacob with inspiration for his fiction. The abundance of barely clothed man flesh and daily debauchery stimulates his personal muse. When he isn’t stroking the keyboard, Jacob spends time with his daughter. They both represent a bright blue blip in an otherwise predominantly red swath in south Texas.

This is only the second book I've read by this author - but it certainly won't be the last. Here Jacob Z Flores has created a world which I already love...anyone who likes YA stories that have a fantasy/paranormal twist will like these. I love that whole it's our world but with elements much of society doesn't know about theme of books and TV and this embraces that genre so well.

Mason is a character who is hiding a secret and this affects how the world at large views him. Even his closest friends don't truly know him, this seemed very metaphorical to me of teenagers the world over. He has an image to uphold, but truly he only has that image as a way to shield himself. I love that Drake was able to work his way through the shield and into Mason's life, intended or not.

At times this book was laugh-out-loud funny. My particular favourite was 'park whoring'. I'm a park whore fan myself - could watch it for hours. Even if I do call it free running... The whole book managed to find a great balance between humour and action.

I'm eager to find out more about this world, though this story wrapped up I'm not done with these characters. t feels to me like there is a whole lot more to find out about the Blackmoors and the world they inhabit. I also feel like there is more to Aunt Millie than we learnt about here...I often have a feeling in these kinds of tales that the general public in the worlds know more than they are letting on. More than the supernatural characters realise...Danny from Teen Wolf anyone?? I like this because it feels like the simple story we're shown in the first book is just the first layer - I can't wait to read more of this series to see where it goes.

A really enjoyable read, and as I said, an author I'll be looking out for more of.

3.5???

Eeesh. I read this right after the book was released and I should've written a review sooner. I'm horribly behind.

I enjoyed this book. I've been a fan of Mr. Flores since the first Provincetown book, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the change in writing style. Spell Bound is paranormal and although technically young adult, there is a bit of steam in the book as well.

Some readers may find issue with the world building, but I never felt bogged down by it. It may be way over simplifying things, but if I had to describe the book in a few sentences it would be this: Take a small bit of Harry Potter (magic), a few grains of Fantastic Four or X-Men (abilities), add in a tiny dash of shape shifter, pile on high school senior m/m angst and that is "sorta, kinda, maybe" the foundation of the book.

I have no doubt that I'll be picking up the next book in the series.

This was good. I really liked the relationship between Mason and Drake. The mystery really ouzzled me. I kept waiting for Drake to be the bad guy, unknowingly. I knew he wasn't a shifter. 😊 The rest of the Blackmoore family is very interesting and i canNOT wait for Theo's story. I do recommend this. 4.25 stars

No time for a real review because I need to dive into the next book.

This was so much fun. Flores certainly created a world that was made for me and I cannot get enough. I feel like I read this at the speed of plaid (if you get that reference- I love you) and couldn't stop to do anything because I had to know it all.

I adore the Blackmoor family and Mason's book was a great introduction to them all. I totally need to see how Thad thaws (get it?) and how Pierce is restrained. OMG! I just love these brothers and seeing who the 4th book is about and the POV we get in it has me giddy as a badass motherfucking warlock...gah! You know what I mean.

The world building was so easy to get into and that is always helpful. I loved the whole black, gray and white magic deal and why Havenbridge is such a special place.

My heart breaks for Drake and I adored the cocky motherfucker and how his connection to Mason finally let Mason be the powerful warlock he was meant to be and not just turning himself into Kafka novel.

The romance between Drake and Mason was totes swoony and boy howdy they sure had adult stuff going on below the belt but I am a perv and don't mind.

Anyway. Book was hella good. I wish this were a cable series because it would be amazing and OMG, I need to go start my fellow ginger's book and see where it all leads.

I am in love with this series right now. Can't stop, won't stop.

3.75 stars.

I can't believe I read a YA book and liked it. Yes, it was really YA and some parts just a little too young for me but it was charming and adorable so I didn't cringe or roll my eyes too terribly much.

Thankfully the next book features an MC that is out of high school because I dunno how much YA I can take.

Work has burned me out to the extent that I can't even properly formulate some basic thoughts on this one! I liked it and the romance was sweet with a little steam (this is an older YA romance). I'm not sure the YA paranormal genre is really my thing though.

I am very impressed with the author's versatility -- this is the third book of his that I've read and they're all completely different.

Main Characters: Drake Carpenter and Mason Blackmoor
Key Themes: Magic Users, Mystery

MM romance between a teen warlock from a powerful family and a poor orphaned shifter. This story definitely did not leave me spellbound. I just could not get into it.... the story felt somewhat formulaic, the characters were not particularly compelling or consistent, and parts of the story just did not make sense to me.

...from the moment we met, Drake and I had been spell bound...

First, I must make a confession that paranormal~witch is not a genre I'm usually into, but...I'll make exception for this one.

Because this story captivating me from the very start and I can't put it down !

It's sweet, I can't stop grinning and enjoying the interaction between Drake and Mason.

Can't wait for what will happen next since the unique fact that Derek not affected by the spells !!!

Is he really just a human ? Or...

“Mason?” he asked. His voice was low and throaty.

“Yeah,” I replied. A husk deepened my tone.

“Will you kiss me?”

I smiled and ran my fingers along his lips, which pursed against my touch. “I only kiss boyfriends, remember?”

He nodded. “Then kiss me.”

Nicely written with a good flow to the story. I like the separations between the types of magic. Mason and Drake were good together. There was a build up to the next book between the two dark warlocks. Entertaining for a YA book.

Wow! What an explosive first book in the series!

Now, before we being, let me say that parts of this are YA, but it's a YA that is for 18+ only or mature 16+, because there is a lot of sexiness going on in here. It's very true to the single-mindedness of teenagers going through hormonal changes and having one track minds, but it also accepts that teenagers have sex. So, if you don't want to read about that, maybe just convince yourself to view Mason and his friends as 20 year olds stuck in high school, because seriously, you don't want to miss this story.

Right from page one, it packed a punch. The magical aspect of the story was – rejoice! – well explored and a major factor of the storyline. Far too often, I'm offered a story about a witch/warlock and there's limited on-page magical use, conjuring, discussion and history. I got all of that here, when it was the right time, when it made sense and without any of the laborious stereotypes that might make it corny.

I have to admit that I wasn't sure about Mason as a main character for a little while, at the beginning. He was so cocky, with a bad boy swagger and so convinced that he was this badass who ruled the world that I didn't know what to make of him. Then he met Drake and he had a little challenge on his hands that blew up into the sweetest, hottest romance I've ever read between two teens still in high school.

When it comes to characters, I loved them all! Each one was diverse, entertaining, interesting and added something to the story. I loved Mason and his brothers; Thad and Pierce; as well as their dad. I loved Drake and Adam, Elliot and Aunt Millie. I hated Miranda, as I was supposed to, without thinking her completely evil. Most of all, I wanted to see more of Elliot and Adam, from the minor characters.

I was intrigued by Adam, as a 'minor' character with an interesting storyline. At first, I thought maybe he and Pierce had a love/hate thing, but then he showed interest in Mason, which just complicated everything and made him even more interesting. Then there was the part where he asked to speak to Mason and had something to say but was interrupted...nothing more juicy than a secret I don't get to hear!

I also have to confess that, at first, I hated Mason's brothers. The way they made him feel, once we saw him outside of the high school environment, nearly broke my heart. Here was this kid being ragged on by two older brothers and his dad, all of whom were out of control trigger-tempers and considered him the useless black sheep, disappointment of a family member. He was ignored, mistreated and disrespected by everyone – especially Miranda! – that it got to me, after a while. Then I began to understand the dynamics more and it all made sense. It was no wonder he wanted to live up to the big-man-on-campus image he had in high school when that was how he was treated outside of it. For such a badass, Mason is sweet, charming, naïve and adorable in all the right ways. Drake is just the same, but on a much deeper level. I love them both, together and apart. They're perfect for each other.

And, while I'm in a confessing mood, I should also say that I cried. Twice. The first was at the water hose incident, when I realised just what Mason had to deal with from friends and family alike and how strong he had to be not to break down in tears the way I did. The second came later, with the simple but effective and heart-ripping quote:
“No boy should be without his momma.”

For me, the intrigue just kept building until I barely knew what was real, what I was sure of and what might happen next. I was curious over what and who Drake might be, even until the end; I was curious over Adam's behaviour, the way Drake's parents died, then the mention of Mason's mother loving him but that she'd always been hiding a secret she never told him of. After that, things blew up and the supernatural hi-jinx began for real. As did the intense teen-lovin'.

I loved the way that Mason and Drake discussed knowing each other's secrets in such a natural way that made it so easy and so simple to misunderstand each other's real meaning. The cleverness and the utter excitement I felt every time they tip-toed around 'what' they knew, only for us readers to know they weren't talking about the same thing, was great.

That is the genius of Flores' writing. It's my first book by this author and I can already tell it won't be the last. It had action, adventure, magic, romance and a whole host of sexiness. The balance between romance, high school drama and a rampaging magical adventure was stunningly well crafted, well written and gripping from page one. What's not to love?

~

Favourite Quote

“He ran a finger through my dark locks and then kissed my nose. “This was perfect for our first time.”
“First time?” I asked, my lips drawing into a huge smile. “Does that mean there's gonna be a second and a tenth?”
Drake chuckled and shook his head. “I swear. One-track mind.”
I rested my forehead against his. “You haven't answered my question.”
“Yes,” he said, sighing. “Seconds. Tenths. And maybe even a one hundredth.”
I grinned broadly. “Think we can get to a hundred by tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow?” he asked. “I was thinkin' tonight. You're such a slacker.””

This is a New Adult fantasy story with adult references to gay sex and plenty of strong language. We have a male protagonist who thinks of new arrivals in school in terms of how hot they are, guys of course, and whether he can be bothered to bully them. But this school is different because this town uses magic and goes to Sabbat coven. Some of the young people get together and ask why they have to use white, grey or black magic just because that's what their parents do. Why not choose for themselves? I haven't heard of grey magic but I suppose it's like grey hat hacking. They are told that they evolved as homo magus and are separate from the rest of the human race.

A murdered woman is found on the school sports field. Proctors, Conclave and warlocks are to investigate. Maybe it's not to do with magic but they believe an ill wind is blowing their way and they can't take chances. There is also a possible shapeshifter in town. However between construction site accidents and more dead bodies, life becomes alarming.

To me it's peculiar that in a modern world where he can work magic - if undercover - and nobody thinks twice about his being gay, our protagonist Mason is constantly complaining and swearing. Get a grip, kid. And learn to use a computer.

Something that annoys me is that when two schoolboys have sex with each other, there is no risk of pregnancy of course, so teens reading this book might not think there are any consequences to any sex. I'm not sure how the message would be conveyed in this context, but I believe it should be. I also think it's worth mentioning what the age of consent is for various activities, if the situation involves kids at high school. Mason seems quite immature, but I know guys mature later than girls.

I'd term this a dark fantasy and I'd have enjoyed it a lot more without the constant flow of invective, something women authors seem able to dispense with in urban fantasy books like Kitty And The Midnight Hour. Gay men looking for fantasy reads will probably like the story if they are not put off by the reminder of school days.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Not by the author, because I’ve read Flores before and have loved it. No, what I was surprised by was the vastness of this world and the different direction this author took from his normal contemporary safe haven. Not to say his contemporary isn’t wonderful, but Flores may have found his calling with Spell Bound.

What I like about his one is Mason’s growth. Mason Blackmoor, son of the soon-to-be leader of the Order of Black, is the proverbial black sheep in the family, waiting for his powers to come to fruition and questioning every move his family and his ancestors make. Mason becomes a new person in this book. Instead of trying to be someone he’s not or who he thought he was, he becomes exactly who he is—strong, brave, courageous, and beautiful.

Drake is equally wonderful. The boy is forgiving and fun and big-hearted. He’s had a ton going on in his life and needs to find stability and protection to feel safe. To his surprise, he finds that in Mason. As this book is written in Mason’s POV, any growth we see form Drake is filtered through Mason’s mind, but still, it’s enough. I love Drake’s candidness. He is who he is and makes no apologies for it.

Probably my favorite part of this book is the misunderstanding. I’m not going to go into what it is, because I would like you to be surprised, and maybe a little like I did. You’re welcome in advance.

Warlocks, Witches, and Wizards, Oh My!!! Jacob did a great job in this paranormal suspense novel that is very entertaining, exciting, and Hot!! Mason and his family of warlocks are threatened by an unknown darkness who is out to kill them, especially Mason. Mason has met a human who has changed his world which has helped him tap into his hidden powers. Drake, even though he is human, is different, and the covens are bewildered about what to do about him. The story is strong and flows and the character development is amazing, with each individual character having a significant part in the story. We are going to see alot of these 3 Warlock brothers, the Warlock father, and Drake. Excited to read the next sequel to this series. Have a feeling it is going to get really exciting and even Hotter along the way. This story is totally different from the past stories Jacob has given us. Another side of him that is interesting and exciting. Highy recommend this!! If you like the paranormal, suspense, action, and Hot MM Sex and Love, you will love this.... Don't miss this series. A Twist in Jacob's Type of Novels...A Must Read!!

Drake and Mason stole my heart. They're so cute together. This is enemy to lover (or can I say, a 'pretend enemy?).
I love the banters between Drake and Mason, the 'still teenagers', but 'a growing up boys' in them. *grins*.
Drake and Mason are funny, witty, and adorable. They're definitely made for each other. A spell-bound.

I loved Aunt Millie :(
And Dad and Pierce and Thad are awesome ! Can't wait for another story to come!

Mason is a warlock like his father and his 2 older borthers Price, a manwhore that passes from man to woman like we change underwears and Thad a bookworm, the brain of the family. His mother was also a warlock but she died for cancer some months before the story starts. His family is one of the 3 protectors of the Gate, the source of their powers. The author never really explains what the Gate is or how it was created or by who, he only tells us that the other 2 families are one of wizards and the other witches and that there is a Conclave of 9 ppl that watches over them. The author also tells us that these familes arent friends, they just work together and nothing more, and when we see Miranda, part of the witches family, always antagonizing Mason,we understand that she does it not bcs she really hates him,but just bcs her family raised her with this idea of superiority and the fact that Mason most of the time, well always, fails his spells cheers her up and makes her laugh at him. While Miranda may "hate" Mason we see that is not the same for all the other magical kids. Elliot, a wizard, for example considers Mason his friend and Adam, Miranda's older brother, is in love with him. Sadly for him he will never have the time to confess, bcs from the first time Mason and Drake meet there will be no one else. They will be spellbound. The author explains what this means. 2 souls reincarnated that always find each other along the centuries and are destined to be in love forever.

Mason and Drake first meeting isnt all roses and unicorns. Mason is sitting in the cafeteria with his friends, the bullies of the school, not that he is a bully but these guys just want to follow him and he doesnt stop them. In the end they arent really bad, and also accept the fact that Mason is gay. The warlock likes them, they are simple guys but with a good heart and sometimes they act like bullies bcs they didnt have an easy life and just want to be noted. He and his friends are used to be left alone, Mason knows that the other kids in the school are scared of him. Also if he never acted as a bully, Mason is sure that they are scared of him bcs maybe they can feel his powers and also if no human knows about their existence, maybe they can still feel that he is different.

Mason is surprised when someone asks him to sit with them. He is ready to tell the guy to go away, not in a kind way, but then he sees him. Drake is beautiful, the hotter guy he has ever seen, and also if his attitude isnt one of the best, the guy is sassy, sarcastic and always talks back, Mason cant tell him to go away.
Mason has had other experiences with boys, but never more than make outs and just one time he got on third base with one(probably Hand Jobs or humping), but he is still a virgin.

{"Mind if I join ya?"......."Uh, are y'all deaf or something? 'Cause if this is the short-bus table, it don't bother me none".}
{"Are you calling us retards?" Brandon asked......"}
{"Not really." ......."I'm just sayin' if y'all happen to be special needs, then that's no skin off my teeth."}

And while Mason cant reply and just stares at Drake and is torn between punching him or kissing him, his friends continue to argue with him.

{"This is our table, newbie",Eddie said...."Why don't you take your hillbilly ass somewhere else?"}
{"That's not very hospitable."}

When one of his other friends, Simon, tells Drake that maybe he is the retard, Mason gets angry he doesnt like ppl using that word and tells them so.

{"Maybe you're the retard."...Cause I don't think you're hearing what we're saying."}
{"Oh, I hear you."...."I'm just choosin' to ignore you."}

Mason asks him way he came to them to cause trouble, but Drake replies that he was just being friendly and that his friends acted like jerks. In the end despite the protests, Drake still sits with them and doesnt leave.

Weeks later when Mason will ask Drake again why he sat with them, he will reply that he had felt a pull towards him and had followed his instics, that told him that Mason was like him.

At start Mason thinks that Drake is also a magical creature, he thinks he is a shifter, but he is wrong. The pulling he felt was born from his soul and the fact that also Drake has lost someone dear to him, his parents few months before, makes him understand why Mason acts like a lone wolf.

While we read about this slow burn romance btw the boys, we also see another part of the story. Someone is murdering ppl and the covens need to stop them.

Some days after their first meeting at school, Drake and Mason arent friends yet. They are what we could call frenemies. They like to bicker and annoy each other, but what they hide is the fact that they really like each other. They are just 18 and were never in love. Like Mason, Drake is a virgin and also if his friends in Texas used to go around and sleep, he wasnt like that and always waited, and when in the end of the book, he and Mason will finally make love, we both see how happy they are to have done it for the firt time with the person they love.

They dont know what to do about their feelings, but they cant stop from chasing each other. One day when Mason is in his car he sees Drake doing parkour as he always does. He is gonna ignore him, but the boy jumps on his car and smirks at him and then continues running. In that moment Mason decides to follow him and thank god he did, since some time later someone tries to kill them both and only Mason's powers save them.

The law tells that he shouldnt use his powers infront of a human, but he is sure Drake isnt human (he is wrong) and anyway he didnt understand what he was doing. Luckily the Conclave couldnt see what happend bcs their enemies are using a powerful clocking spell that makes them unable to see whats going on in the city.

From the moment Mason saves his life, the 2 boys start spending a lot of time together. They still bicker and I loved it, but we also see the sexual tension and the feelings that are starting to grow. Mason's family really liked Drake, is impossible not to love this blond sarcastic angel with hazel eyes.

Also if the book was wrote in 1 POV and i dont usually like it, the story was really interesting and the fact that there were only 2 sex scene and when those happened made me love it.

Drake was smart and loyal, a kid that is living with his aunt bcs his parents died in a car accident. He uses his sarcasm to hide his feelings, but he is brave and kind. When Drake meets Mason, a boy with beautiful blue eyes and black hair, he feels attracted to him, but at the same time cant stop bickering with him. They are typical teenegers new to love.

When Drake's aunt dies, killed by Mason's enemies and the boy doesnt have anywhere else to go, Mason tells him to stay with him and his family. The fact that this dramatic episode happens after their first date, was really sad. Only few days before Drake had been attacked by the shadow weaver and put into a hospital, there he and Mason had had their first kiss and become boyfriends.

{"So you've never had a boyfriend?"}
{"Nope."}
{"Would you like to have one?"}
{"I thought we agreeded to go slow"}
{"I wasn't asking to be my boyfriend. I was asking if you'd like to have a boyfriend. There is a difference."}
{"Yeah, right", he said, staring at me askance. I poked his side, pretending to be annoyed. "Will you just answer my question?"}
{"Yes,"..."I would like to have a boyfriend one day."}
{"Then maybe you will. And maybe he'll even be a truly unique individual with dark brooding looks, a kickass car, and a charming personality."
{Drake sighed. "He sounds yummy. I'd love to meet him." I glowered, and he snickered.}
{......."Just so you know", "I'm not like any of the boys back in Texas, okay?" He bit his lip and leaned in for a kiss....."Slow, remember? I only kiss boyfriends."}

Their first kiss will be at the hospital few days later.

{"It's about time you woke up.".."You'll do just about anything to get attention, won't you?"}
{"This from a guy wearin' a see-through hospital shirt. Did you lose yours again?"}

Few minutes later Drake's aunt enters the room. She is happy to see her nephew finally awake and also knows that the boys need some time alone.

{.."I'll be back in a bit"...}
{"Well, that wasn't very subtle," Drake muttered."}
{"Nope. Not at all."...."But since we're alone and all."..}
{"I was attacked and conked unconscious, and you're hittin' on me?"}
{"Well, you do look darn cute in that hospital gown."}
{"I look darn cute in just about anythin' "}
{"I wont argue with you on that".}

{"Mason?"..."Yeah" I replied...."Will you kiss me?".}
{"I only kiss boyfriends, remember?" He nodded. "Then kiss me."}
{"I thought you'd never ask."}

That scene was really cute. Finally a book not focused on sex but with a story. With no cheat or rape and full of romance and first times. YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

They start spending a lot of time together and Drake sometimes also fakes to be annoyed to see him always. We all know that he is joking and Mason enjoys their debates.

{"Don't encourage him, Aunt Millie"...."I'll mever get rid of him that way."}
{"As if you want to get rid of me. I'm quite the catch, right, Aunt Millie?"}
{"If you mean like the cold and the flu, then yes. You're quite the catch."}
{"You two!"..."Anyone listening to you both would think you didn't like each other one bit".}
{" I don't," I protested, scrunching up my face in fake disgust.}
{"Yeah, me either." Drake turned up his nose and looked away.}

I smiled so much at this scene, they are 2 dorks.
Sadly the author never makes us forget about the drama in the story, not that I'm complaining bcs I adored it, but soon the happiness of the boys is tainted by Aunt Millie's homicide.

Drake is now living with Mason's family, but their enemies dont give up and in the night attack the house. Mason and his family try to kill the vampyre, pet of the dark shadow weaver, but is too strong for them. Also with Mason's powers now active, he too is a shadow weaver, they dont have a chance. When Drake comes out of the house and sees what's happening he is shoked and doesnt understand. He is angry that Mason lied to him not telling what he really is, but at the same time he cant stop trying to protect him. Drake is just human, and their enemies think he is weak and ignore him, but that will be their downfall. Drake is brave, and with a stick to the vampyre's heart he is able to kill it. The dark shadow weaver now outnumbered decides to leave, but not before telling them that his plan will not be stopped.

Later that night Mason and his family have a meeting with the other covens and here there was a scene that almost made me cry.

The other families want to erase Drake's memories, bcs he is human and shouldnt know about them. Drake begs them and cries that he doesnt want to forget about Mason, and also if the other boy loves him and is also crying,he knows that this is the right thing to do he loves him so much that he wants to protect him and he will leave him alone if this means that Drake will stay alive. Drake is still crying and arguing with the others, but at the same time he tells Mason that he will always love him, despite what he is saying.

While they were casting the spell I was like "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, pls NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!", and thank the gods the spell didnt work, something that never happened before and I want to know why.....

Anyway, Mason and his father stop the other leaders who wanted to try again the spell and puts Drake under his family protection.

A week later there is Aunt Millie's funeral. Is a sad day, but there is also some light.
Drake asks Mason to make love to him, that also if he misses his aunt, this is the right time, bcs she would like to see him celebrating his life and being happy.

{"I think it's time"..I grimaced. That was Drake's way of telling me it was time to go to sleep."Okay. Let me just brush my teeth, and I'll be right back."...."Not for sleep", he said. "For bed."}

Mason asks him if he is serious bcs is the day of the funeral but Drake replies that his aunt would want to see him live.

{..."Mason, I want you inside me"}

....

{"Um, you haven't had sex before, right?"}
{"No. Why?"}
{"Well, since I haven't either, I figure it's safe without. Well, you know."}
{"Only if you're sure," I said.}
{"I am. For my first time, I just want to feel you. Nothin' else."}

DEAR AUTHOR, ARE U TRYING TO KILL ME WITH THIS SCENE? TELL ME...

When they come, Drake tells Mason that if he wants he cant just stay inside him all night, and Mason replies that if he is ok, he would like to stay there longer than just that night. Drake agrees.
So damn cute.

{"You can stay there all night if you want"....."I was planning on staying here a little longer than just tonight. If that's okay with you."......."Fine by me",......"At least until it's my turn to fuck you.".....I wiggled my eyebrows at him. "Didn't I tell you? I'm a total top."...."Not with me, you're not."}

And Mason really likes that idea, and me too XD

The book ends like that with them laying in bed together.

This scene was really sweet and romantic and let's say this, also HOT. They are both virgins and incesure about what to do, but Mason goes slow and is gentle, and Drake loves every moment.

We still dont know why that dark shadow weaver attacked Drake,why he wants Mason or which is the plan and why they are killing these ppl and not others, but maybe we will find about this in the other books.

My Thoughts on Spell Bound

Initially when I started this book it seemed like I was reading about a group of bullies but it soon became clear Mason was not a bully but then I didn't like the fact that he hung around people who bullied others and did nothing. While Brandon, Simon and Eddie do redeem themselves and actually don't seem to be anything but troublemakers with good hearts this past alluding to bullying has me a bit weirded out.

I loved the world of "The Warlock Brothers of Havenbridge". I loved the mythology and I loved everything about it - the witches, the wizards and of course the warlocks. But I loved Mason challenging the rules of their world even more, I really hope to see more unified action in the future because that would be awesome. I mean these 15 members of "The Protector Covens" just have so much potential and the way they quibble but still celebrate all major festivals together makes them feel like one big dysfunctional family.

I loved the dynamic between Mason, Thad and Pierce. The ribbing was hilarious and I could see the bonds at their hearts. But i knew that had to change while it would be okay when everything was hunky-dory when things start to unravel I felt like these three needed to work together and that did happen just a tad late, like there was a point when I was like no more bickering from these three they need to start working together again but this error was swiftly rectified and reinforcements came from quite the unexpected quarters of Thad.

Oh! Miranda and Mason have such great best friend potential. I mean personally I can't wait for these two to figure it out and finally defy the rules governing the interactions between these three magical races especially between the Protector Covens.

Mason and Drake were exceptionally amazing. I mean they shared just the sweetest moments together. That butterfly moment in Drake's backyard will stay with me forever. I mean just seeing the light of love shine through Mason's personality was such a fantabulous experience. Just amazing! I do feel like we left these two a bit too early but since I know the fourth book has them back at the helm, I'm not too worried.

When I was feeling out the tags for this book I was kind of hovering over the humorous tag. But personally I really enjoyed this book from Mason's point of view. Mason had me laughing and feeling and being in his head was just so great. I wish we get a future opportunity to be in his head, because it was one of the best parts of this book. Also I can't wait for him to come into his powers, that will be like so... Awesome!

This series has me hooked and I am glad it reminded me of why I love fantasy.

It's too bad, because I was moderately interested in the world-building and the murder mystery, but I just cannot with this cast of smug, rich, rude, entitled, classist a-holes. I hate every single character, and mostly (this is the damning part) in exactly the same way.

Mason Blackmoor is a powerful warlock… who doesn’t have control over his powers. Whenever he uses them, they more often than not seem to backfire on him. But while he may be a disgrace to magic users, he’s feared by humans, especially those at school. Until Drake, a new kid in town, challenges Mason and shows him not every human is afraid of him. But before he knows it, he’s thrust into solving multiple murders where Drake just so happens to always be a part of. Can Mason figure out who’s killing people and why Drake rubs him the wrong way before it’s too late for both of them?

I’m going to be completely honest. I went back and forth on whether I’d read this book or not. I saw the cover and read the blurb and it caught my interest immediately. However, I was scared to read it because I haven’t had much success in this author’s other works. Even so, I decided to give it a try because I’ve been jonesing for more stories like these (has anyone else noticed the shortage in paranormal stories lately??). I’m so glad I did because this one was definitely worth the read! It’s a captivating story built around a world on witches, wizards and warlocks. I loved the different factions of the white, gray and black magic.

With that said, the characters were definitely the highlight of this book. Not even just Mason and Drake but also the secondary characters like Mason’s brothers, who’s bickering and fighting led to some interesting situations!! Still, Mason was my favorite because of his ‘I don’t give a fuck’ attitude. He has a temper and he flies off the rails at times but when Drake challenges him, it was like sparks flew. I loved, loved, loved that Drake wasn’t afraid of Mason and that his stubbornness caused so much conflict between them. Their chemistry together caused so much tension because it went from hate to unsatisifed lust to love and I adored how it developed!

I had two minor issues with this one. For one, it took everyone a really, really long time to realize there were two culprits and I felt like the second culprit was undeveloped and almost forgotten. Granted, I know this is most likely because it’s a series and he plays the big overall conflict so overtime we’ll explore more of that. However, I just felt as if the shadow weaver was mentioned a few times but it didn’t really go anywhere with the story. Yes, I know he’s connected to the other villain but I just felt like it wasn’t as developed or explored as much as it could have been to the point that leading into the second book would give the reader more of an idea of what the Blackmoors are dealing with… and I don’t have that feeling.

In the end, though, this was a fun, fast-paced and exciting book. I was hesitant to read it because I haven’t had much luck with this author but once I started, I was immediately pulled into the story. I absolutely adored the characters, their chemistry and most of all the way the story played out. I cannot wait to read the next book (although I’m a little scared it’ll be menage – not a big fan of those or love triangles) but I’ll still give it a chance because I’m not done with this world just yet!

Jacob Z Flores is an author whose name has been on my wish-list for a while now, which is why I jumped at the chance to review Spell-Bound.
The novel has a combination of romance, danger, mystery, suspense, magic and that hint of sex; meaning that though it is primarily written for a Young Adult audience, it also easily crosses-over.
From the book’s title and the series’ name we know that Spell-Bound is centred on a magical family – but the Blackmoors are more like the Malfoys than the Potters. Jacob Z Flores is careful to define the differences between witch, wizard and warlock, the varying types of magic each possesses and the prejudice this causes,
‘ “How can gray magic remain neutral if it is constantly influenced by white or black? How could white magic promote spiritual connections if tainted by the selfish nature of our ways. For that matter, how would our black magic fare if we didn’t focus on our individual wants or needs? In order for us to remain stable, and for this world to persist, we have to exist as we are.” ‘
Mason is considered to be deficient in the eyes of his brothers and father because he is unable to control his magic. Yet this also means that Mason is one of the most likeable characters in the novel. He has none of the arrogance of his brother Pierce or the piousness of Thad. Mason proves that he is thoughtful, genuine and loyal, despite being part of one of the most powerful black magic families.
In contrast to the evil which threatens Havenbridge, Jacob Z Flores gives us Drake and Mason’s relationship which though intense, also has a sense of innocence with both young men agreeing to proceed slowly although Mason is certain of one thing,
“Whatever existed between us went deeper than just wanting to jump each other’s bones. It was almost magical, as if from the moment we met, Drake and I had been spell-bound.”
I loved everything about this story, particularly the fact that at no point does the plot slow down or weaken. Spell-Bound is already listed as one of my favourite books of 2015 and I know that Jacob Z Flores is an author I will read more of very soon.

This was a wondeful read! I devoured it all in one day. So, here´s the deal, if you like wizards, and warlocks, and witches, and shifters and all magic creatures, you may totally enjoy this one.

Spell Bound is a fantasy/PNR book that is centered around Mason, an 18 years old warlock who lives in Havenbridge. In the beginning, the first two or three chapters, I disliked the guy. Completely. He was cocky, and arrogant, and a little annoying prick… But that changed, and I ended up adoring him. The guy grew on me, what can I say! :P

One thing you must know about our young warlock is that he has zero talent to perform spells. Whatever he tries backfires him, but then, he meets Drake, and Drake changes it all.

Drake is pretty much Mason’s match. Not in the magical sense, because Drake is not a warlock, but he doesn’t take any of Mason’s bullshit. It was fun to read, and it was lovely to read how the attraction they felt for each other grew strong as the story went by. They are so cute together, and so sweet. As a personal note, I need you to know that I normally don’t do well with much sweet in my books, but for some reason I kept grinning like a loon here, and I really liked that. I think my cheeks hurt from all the grinning. Haha

Even though we have the romance element, there is much more to this book than that. We have a super interesting family dynamic. I like both of Mason’s brothers, and I also liked his dad a lot. I liked how loyal and strong they were as a family, even though they didn’t know they were. I love how they take Drake under their wing in the end. It was so lovely to read.

The author makes a good work usig the Magic world to portray different things that we could see nowadays. I particularly loved that everyone in the magical world was perfectly well with any kind of sexual orientation. I LOVED this. It was refreshing and great to read. Kudos for that!

As you imagine, because there is magic, there also is a lot of fighting. We have our warlocks using their active powers and the thing becomes really fun to read. There’s a mystery to be solved, and in the end it wasn’t really solved, which I’m guessing, sets ground for the next book – (YAY).

Wow – this is an amazing new genre (I think) for Jacob Flores! He did a terrific job with this new series (Yay – a new SERIES!).

Mason and Drake are both high school seniors (over 18) when they meet. Mason is the leading “bad boy”, a warlock of black magic (not bad, just a different energy). Drake is the new guy, Southern drawl sticking out in the North East town in Massachusetts.

They have an instant attraction and as the book suggests, they may in fact be Spell Bound, or soul mates.

There is some dancing around their attraction but they pretty much hit it off right away. What keeps them separate is the fact that humans can’t know about Warlocks and there is something about Drake that strikes Mason as “otherworldly”.

Between making googly eyes at one another, both boys are involved in the mysterious deaths that keep popping up around town.

When push comes to shove and the danger arrives at Drake’s door, secrets get revealed and some really hard decisions have to be made.

One other big wrinkle – Mason doesn’t actually have control over his magic – though being around Drake seems to make it easier – the question is why? What will happen when Drake finds out? Will the two even be allowed to be together? What will happen to his magic if Drake and he can’t be together?

**
Though this at times feels like a YA book, it is filled with adult issues and the smexy times are pretty “adult” though not very numerous.

I think I’d call it New Adult and feel comfortable with that as a category.

The paranormal stuff is outstanding in this book – magic everywhere! I love it when the author actually USES magic in their storylines rather than having the magic only be important as regards a “mate” or significant other.

The dramatic murders and that mystery move the story along quickly but don’t overshadow the romance.

I was very impressed by this book and look forward to reading the next book SOON!

Urban fantasy that failed to pull me into their world. The warlocks had high opinion of themselves, but all they did was getting their ass kicked by the enemy. Actually, all characters mentioned here were useless, and even when the MC got his power, he really didn't become BAMF. As for the romance, it's rather instant and boring.

There's a lot to like about this book, I loved that Mason was the black sheep of his family, I loved that Drake called him out on his bullshit. Drake made Mason more aware of his environment, heightened his senses if you like, and finally brought out the power in hi
I appreciated the humour in these men and their inability to keep their shirts on, it seemed that chaos followed Mason everywhere and he wasn’t above throwing down and giving us readers a little eye candy moment. Phwar!

I think if you are into the whole Supernatural sub-genre and you enjoy a gratuitous mind ogling of super sexy, succulently sculpted men then you would probably enjoy this book. I wouldn’t normally choose a high-school based romance but given the MM theme I jumped at the chance. I love those awkward early stages of romance you get from first timers who are still trying to figure out how it all works. I would say the first time sex that these guys have may have been a little ambitious, but hey? Who am I to say how much cock a guy can take the first time round?

So-so.

The beginning was good...the whole high school thing, a new boy, warlocks/witches/wizards in hiding, a threat to the town, evil creatures murdering people...

And then the romance starts developing between the warlock and the new guy. Very cliché, but I was so ready to gobble the trope up. Until it all went wrong...the relationship was all infantile bickering, and then turned all saccharine sweet, with hand-holding and plenty of tears. It was downright cheesy at times.

Complete with the abrupt ending, it was very frustrating.
