Hard reality
Elizabeth and Lillie are eleven respectively twelve years old. For the first time, Elizabeth is confronted with the harsh reality of their differences. Their colour, their background, their friendship will never be the same. While Elizabeth is still a child, Ellie has to grow up fast, learning to be invisible to the white people, but also learning to take over from miss Reva, who is declining fast. They are both learning the herbs and recipes to heal and also the secrets that may not be written down.
In the meantime, the ledger ladies continue their struggle against those who forge false bills of sale to snatch free people of colour after having stolen their authentic papers.
