Daughter of Garnet

Rate this book
Once a year, new university graduates gather to learn whom the Gods have chosen to Bless as Alpha or Omega, granting them shifted forms before they enroll in the Institute and learn their place in society. Zoe is relieved to feel no shift overtake her during the ceremony and accepts her new designation with relief.

Except that when Zoe placed her hand on the stone of the Fire Goddess during the ceremony, a voice whispered in her ear, calling her an Omega and swearing her to secrecy.

It shouldn’t be possible. The Fire Goddess has been silent for generations. It must have been the ramblings of her nervous mind speaking in her ear, calling out her fear of being designated as an Omega.

Things are easy at the Institute if she ignores the changes in her body, the Alpha who is convinced she’s an Omega, and the one who thinks she’s wearing synthetic pheromones.

Harder to ignore is her stalker. But he’s harmless, right?

When the Fire Goddess speaks to Zoe and begs for help, Zoe is conscripted into something much bigger than her, and she must come to terms with her new reality before it’s too late.

Daughter of Garnet is the first book in the Garnet Omega duet, and is intended for adult readers.

4.25/5 stars.

Alright, I discovered Monroe's work this year (tightrope duet uh chef's kiss). I've been getting more into reading OV and but I hadn't read a ton with actual shifters yet. So when I heard about Daughter of Garnet, I was so hyped, and I am happy to report it did not disappoint! I mean not only did I get shifters but I got some of the most unique and interesting shifters I've seen so far.

I found the combination of the fantasy/religious elements and the OV dynamics really intriguing and well thought out, and I'm excited to find out the whole story regarding Ilota and such. I liked the idea of the pack as a group being the chosen one, which felt fresh and different.

Speaking of the pack, eeeeeeeee I love! I mean each member felt like their own person with their own flaws and stuff going on. I will say I would have liked to learn a bit more about some of the guys, but I'm hoping that's coming in book two.

I actually found myself relating to Zoe on multiple occasions, especially with the whole situation with Warren (ugh I dislike this man), and I think it helped ground the story in my mind.

I think where this one fell off a bit for me is very much a personal enjoyment thing, not anything wrong with the actual story per se. It's a little hard to describe but while I did have a great time reading this book, there was a noticeable lack of something, to the point where I cannot justify giving the full five stars. I almost want to say that it felt like the book wasn't over... yet it ended. I know that this is part one of the duet, so it makes sense that the story wasn't wrapped up, but in my opinion the amount of story in this installment, while excellent, didn't feel complete. It felt like I was just starting to get a feel for the characters, and an understanding of the world to then have it be like oop it's over see you in three months for book two.

Anyways, loved the plot, truly enjoyed the characters except that one guy (but I am pretty sure I'm not supposed to lol), and I am very excited to see what happens next, especially based off the tonal direction I think we're headed!

If you have ever read Holly Monroe book, be prepared for this to be a different experience. I devoured this book. I read it in less than and you are left on a cliffy so I am foaming at the mouth for the next book.

In this world, every person is broken down into an alpha, Omega, beta designation. In order to determine your designation, after you graduate college, there is a ceremony where you place your hand on four stones that represent the gods. If you are chosen as an alpha or an Omega, you get a shifted form. Those forms are representative of the gods that bless you. Most people are betas and there has been a decline in Omega blessings.

Our FMC wants to be a beta. Both of her parents are betas, and she understands that living the life of an alpha or an omega is restrictive and puts you under a microscope. We really do start off with a bang when she is blessed, but her God speaks to her and tells her not to tell anyone. What follows is her trying to navigate a new academy and keep her designation hidden from her best friend and her scent matches. There is also the larger plot of the omega’s blessings, disappearing, and how gross alphas want to use them as objects for sexual gratification instead of treating them as people.

I truly enjoyed this book. The romance is there and it is an important part of the story. Her mates are selected for her by the gods and how they all fit together is truly great storytelling. However, that is not the main focus of the book. I really enjoyed that the main focus of this book was our FMC and her journey to accepting and trusting herself. The plot against the omega and the misogynistic and patriarchal alpha leader that only wants them as objects and not as real people is very compelling. And I just know that Zoe is going to absolutely rock their shit.

The mates in the story, all have different personalities, different backgrounds, and have truly been written as individual people. There is also some resistance and bullying within the harem so please be aware of that if that is a trigger for you. You can let me know who your favorite is and why it’s Cliff 😂.

As I mentioned at the start of the review, I am absolutely feral for the next one to come out. I would highly recommend, but if you are impatient, such as I, maybe wait until the next one is available as well.

Daughter of Garnet Holly Monroe
Book 1 - duet

Zoe, Cliff & Cameron, and maybe Ray, Dominic 😅 iykyk

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heat Level: 🔥

Tropes: dark, ABO, MFMMM, forced proximity, 🪢, scent matches, secret omega, slow burn

CW/TW: cliffy, violence, bullying, stalking, bonding without permission

338 pages, 52 chapters

First thoughts:

I’ve read a few of Holly’s ABO previously, Trapped on the Tightrope duet and Knot What You Expected. Absolutely devoured them. When I heard about Daughter of Garnet I was beyond excited to know id get a chance to be an advanced reader for it. I’m always here for an ABO omegaverse … full shifter to boot. Take my money!!

In the beginning I was a lil nervous about going straight from university to the institute and how the Zoe would build relationships with anyone other than Betas but it seems as though where there’s a will there’s a way lol The banter goes a long way in this one and I adore Viv. She’s definitely the bestie we all want in our lives. Cliff oh Cliff 😈 Tall dark and delicious 🤤 Cameron gives a whole new meaning to being collared 🥵

For landing us on a hell of cliffy I’m happy with what we got out the gate.

Warren. Ugh. Don’t get me started. 🫣 I cannot loathe him enough. We’ll see how he shakes out but for now he’s trash. Not sure he’s recovering from any. of. that. 😒

If you’re looking for a new take on ABO slow burn knotty shifter pack with a dirty hierarchical afoot then grab this one immediately.

And the next book is coming Nov 26!!

Quotes:

“What are you even thinking about?" How do I tell her I'm thinking about the sabertooth tiger that chased me down in the woods, the strange Alpha who tried to choke Cliff and then smiled as if nothing happened, my best friend, and the weird feelings I have for him, her brother, and why he hates me, and the fact that I may possibly be an Omega? "The weather," I say

I've read several books from this author, which I didn't actually realize until I got to the end of the book and saw the list of titles. I say this because, while I have loved the other books written by her, I didn't go into this book biased because I 100% was not aware it was her work. Do with that what you will.

Daughter of Garnet is book 1 of an omegaverse duet and it does end with a stressful cliffhanger that makes me hope Holly will let me read that one early, too.. It's not your typical omegaverse, does involve shifting, and is heavily centered around religion. Shifting omegaverses and religious (even polytheism) aren't always my cup of tea. Imagine my surprise that I greatly enjoyed this book, despite that. And am very happy that I read it knowing nothing about it except that it was an omegaverse that I was asked to ARC read for.

It is heavily story based, to the point that I could read 10 more books about this world and know a significant portion of how the world and it's governing bodies work, even if all that happened in the following books was smut. Because of the nature of this first book, there was very little smut, though our FMC gets lots of good scenes with the MMCs throughout.

This may be a spoiler, but I'll try to word it as vaguely as possible in regards to this potential trigger. Adding lots of space, so you can decide not to read it if you don't want to.

For those more sensitive to the topic, there is mention of unsavory acts towards omegas as a whole and treating them like ...for lack of better words and not wanting to spoil too much... cattle and community property.

my first review completely got deleted so let’s try this again 😭

i love anything Holly Monroe writes and this isn’t anything different. i was a little concerned about mixing fantasy and academy elements into an omegaverse and it staying a true omegaverse, but Holly made it work that didn’t take away from the core of OV and built such an interesting world.

i honestly really appreciated that Zoe was just an ordinary girl who is Blessed by the Goddess Ilota and tasked with saving the realm. she isn’t some super badass chick, which felt more realistic to me and kept me more engaged to see how Zoe would navigate this all.

this is a slow burn with most of Zoe’s scent matches and her relationship with each guy is different bc of what they know about her or what they think they know about her. each guy has also their own distinct personality. Cliff, her beta and her rock. Cameron, her stalker alpha who is obsessed with her. and then her alphas Ray and Dominic who have a lot of ground to gain in book 2 with some groveling i can’t wait to see.

this does end on a pretty big cliffhanger and i can’t waaaait for the 2nd book in this duet.

if you love omegaverse, fantasy, or academy, would highly recommend picking this up. and maybe we can talk about who we want Zoe’s shifted form should eat 🤣

thank you Holly Monroe for an e-ARC of 𝑫𝒂𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒇 𝑮𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒕 🔥❤️‍🔥

I love a good why choose then add in betas (no shifting), omegas and alphas (which can shift in creatures) into the mix and you’ve got a book that I couldn’t put down.

This was my first book by Holly Monroe but will definitely not be my last.

I loved all the characters in this book even the ones that come across d*ckish well maybe not Warren unless he redeems himself in book 2. Seeing how the different relationships between Zoe and her men grows is interesting and funny to see but you mostly see it from her POV. This book is mostly told from the POV of Zoe however at the end you get the POV for each other men, which does help to understand what is going on in their heads. It helps to understand why they’ve acted in a particular manner (stalking, bullying and general d*ckish behaviour but from a couple, sweetness, kindness and understanding) because while I did like Dominic and Ray, I did want to slap both across the head a couple of time or more for their behaviour

Each plays to the role to help Zoe grow in different aspects of her life. Out of the gents, I love Cameron, the sneaky little stalker, but what I love more than anything is seeing a female bond grow and support each other and that’s exactly what she gets with Vivian. All I can say is yes, yes, yes to this book and cannot wait for book 2.

Would def recommend if you love a why choose, shapeshift, omegaverse storyline

I absolutely loved this book and devoured it!! I can’t wait for part 2 of this duet and to see what happens next! It’s academy setting with omegaverse, shifting and multiple scent matches. All my favorites in one book! The ending had me on the edge of my seat and needing part 2 sooo bad!!!
The MFC, Zoe, is supposed to be beta who is secretly blessed by Ilota the fire Goddess. She is to right the wrongs of the realm while trying to hide her omega/shifting status. This becomes harder and more complicated after finding her scent matches and learning what kind of shifter she was blessed with.
With the help of her scent matches, Cameron, Dominic, Ray and Cliff, will Zoe be able to keep her identity a secret or will she be found before being able to save the omegas from higher ups and the future planned for them?
They all have prehistoric shifters besides her beta, Cliff. (Betas dont have shifting abilities in this story) I love that each of them is so different and come from Water, Fire, Earth & Air. It makes them stand out even more from other shifter books!
The first part of the duet ends with a cliff hanger that will leave your heart pounding and is another amazing book by Holly! One of my new absolute favorites!!

THIS WAS INSANE!!! in the absolute best way. Oh my god. I’m obsessed. I’m still recovering from that ending tho. Oh my god. This was like if omegaverse, shifter romance, divergent, and a freaking suspense thriller were all thrown into a kitchenaid mixer and this absolute TREAT came out!!! I am absolutely obsessed with the FMC, Zoe. I amend her for keeping her head straight with all the twists and turns thrown her way. And her men. Oh my god. I’m afraid to say anything to give it away because it was just so amazing that you’ll have to read it yourself to find out. All of the mmcs were introduced perfectly. Some of them had questionable meet cutes. But dear lord were they all worth it. Cliff my sweet sweet beta babe. You my dear are perfection. 12/10 no notes. And oh my god. The alphas are scrumptious. I have a soft spot for Cameron 😙 Daughter of Garnet was perfectly spiced. I won’t lie, I haven’t been this attached to my kindle in a HOT minute and it’s absolutely KILLING ME that I have to wait until November (even if it is my birthday month) to read book two!! I could re-read this over and over and it still wouldn’t be enough. I LOVE IT! 😍 Thank you so much Holly Monroe for allowing me to read this ARC 💜💜

1000000000000/5 stars mwahh 💋 no notes

I’ve practically read all of Holly’s books and I gotta tell ya, this might be her best yet! I freaking loved it!!!

The world building is easy to digest but it’s enough to paint such an interesting setting. I’m invested from the very beginning until the end. The characters are all so ~secretive and mysterious~ and I enjoyed trying to sus them out.

I always love the combination of dystopian and fantasy and I think this book does it so well. I’d actually love to explore more of this world, especially since it started out with Zoe and her best friend, Warren, literally stripping naked in a public ceremony to get their designation (alpha, beta, or omega) by touching Gods/Goddess-blessed stones.

Then Zoe had a Goddess literally mind-talk to her, telling her to keep her designation a secret.

Like what an opening to a book? I love it!

And then the men? Well, I’m always a fan of men losing their marbles the moment they meet their mate. They’re such idiots fr 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️ Lovable idiots, though!

This also had me cackling several times. I love when books are unexpectedly funny!!

Seriously, I couldn’t put this book down. In fact, I was reading IN THE SHOWER while my hair color was processing. I was that obsessed.

THE ENDING THOUGH???? BRUTAL. I need book 2 now!

Thank you to Holly Monroe for gifting me an ARC!

Daughter of Garnet is the first book in the new fantasy omegaverse romance duet, Garnet Omega. I received an advance review copy and my thoughts are my own. Thank you to the author for my eArc.

What to expect:
✨Why choose (mfmmm)
✨Slowburn
✨Reluctant hero
✨Academy setting/Dark academia
✨Unique shifters
✨Hidden omega
✨Dangerous secrets
✨Scent matches
✨Bullying

The Lovely: As someone who has read a lot of omegaverse and a lot of fantasy, I loved the unique concept behind this story and how it blended the two. The constant tension that the FMC would be found out kept me on my toes and invested right through the very end.

Also Lovely: I also enjoyed how the FMC’s relationships with the MMCs developed gradually. A certain MMC owes her a lot of groveling!

Recommendation: The cliffhanger was a bit brutal and not how I saw that event going. Lucky for us, book two is expected to be released in November 2026. If you’re in the mood for a unique fantasy x omegaverse romance with secrets and slowburn, I think you would love this book.

"You must be new. Omegas aren't supposed to be out on their own after dark. What if a big, bad Alpha tries to chase and claim you?"

Zoe, Cliff, Cameron, Dominic and Ray.

I knew something amazing was going to come out of this book, but I did not expect the angst, the tension, the fury at how stupid Alphas can be, the love of a Beta and how many people I wanted to slap silly!

Zoe is a Beta, well she is recognised as a Beta, but she's hiding the biggest secret of them all and she puts herself in the most danger. In a Academic setting, surrounded by betas and Alphas, life changes dramatically and her secrets start unravelling- and sadly nothing is quite as it seems.
This storyline is addictive and I couldn't put my Kindle down, I have read all of Hollys omegaverse books, not many outside of Holly, but this one is different when adding in different shifters and gods of these shifters, its a creative level of world building but doesn't take over the whole story and the characters. But now I have to wait until the end of the Year for book 2, and this makes me sad!!!

ARC Review ✨

Did I stay up until 1 AM to finish this? I did. I DID. 😂

This was such a great read, but I’m irate that it’s a duology. Yes, I knew this going into it. Yes, I still somehow feel betrayed. 😂

As a girly fully immersed in the OV world, I’ve read my fair share of OV books, and this one was SO cool. At first, I was a little lost trying to figure out the system and how everything worked, but once I got into it, I was hooked.

It gave me very dystopian vibes (pick your poison: Fourth Wing, The Hunger Games, Divergent) and I’m excited to see where this story goes in the next book. There are so many questions I need answered!

My only real letdown? I don’t think it was quite as spicy as I was expecting. I went in anticipating a little more heat, so that was definitely a minor disappointment.

Overall: a really fun, addictive read that had me sacrificing sleep, so take that as you will. 😂

This was everything I ever could have hoped for.
Poor Zoe is absolutely going through it. She deserves the best happily ever after at the end of this. Secrets, changes, a new environment…it’s so much. I totally understand her hesitance to accept that she’s an Omega, especially when she’s not supposed to tell anyone and has to deal with it alone.
The romances and relationships that are developing and growing (and withering) are so well done.
Cliff is a perfect sweetheart, and I love him so much. He’s perfect for Zoe from the start. The other three started to grow on me (even him. He knows what he did). Ray, Dominic, and Cameron are all their own special kind of dumb boy and I loved it.
This whole story feels so fresh and unique. It’s a perfect blend of Omegaverse, shifters, and fantasy. The drama is drama-ing, the mystery is entrancing, and the plot is unfolding amazingly. I had such a great time reading it. The cliffhanger has me holding on for dear life.

I loved it. I loved Zoe and her pack. I also loved the writing. It was very engaging. The pacing was fast which I liked. I loved how we got to know about the different gods in the world. I also liked the banter and yearning between Zoe and the guys. Hopefully, it’s why choose trope because I loved all the guys. I think my favorite is Dominic or Ray. I loved the world. I found the world very interesting. This is my first Holly Monroe book, definitely not my last. I loved how Zoe is the underdog of the world. I also liked the ending. It was fantastic. I did not see it coming. I loved how Zoe shifted into a dragon. I also hated Dominic’s dad. He is evil. Overall, I loved it. I will definitely be checking out more from the author in the future. I want to thank the author for giving me the earc early for an honest review.

Flipping fantastic part one and the cliffhanger will have you yelling NOOOOO to your reading device so be warned.

I enjoyed learning about Zoe, Dominic, Ray, Viv, Cameron and Cliff. This new world Holly drops us in is amazing. Gods, shifters, blessed Alphas and Omegas and Betas. Vivid imagery in her words and it sucks you in from the first page. Zoe makes fast friends with Viv who has an Alpha brother named Ray. Zoe has a best friend and fellow Beta Warren.. during their ‘choosing’ ceremony she gets chosen by the goddess Ilota (fire goddess and owner of garnet) but is told not to show her designation… Zoe goes about trying to find out why she was chosen by Ilota and why she couldn’t tell anyone that she is actually an Omega. She encounters other Betas and Alphas… Dominic, Cameron, Cliff. Lots of action, lots of mystery and a lot of secrets unravel as the story progresses… I cannot wait for the conclusion of this duet!

But, but, but.... it was just getting so good!! and now I have to wait for book 2 to find out what happens 😭😭

I pretty much devoured this book in a day, it was that good! I was invested in Zoe, the fact that she is the chosen one for Ilota to right the wrongs done to the realm. I have to admit, Warren rubs me up the wrong way and I really jope he isn't added to the pack after what he did when he found out about Zoe.

I love that Cliff, was always drawn to Zoe, and doesnt mind her growing her Pack. Cameron, Ray and Dominic....well the last 2 have some making up to do to Zoe and i hope it is in time to save her.

I really enjoyed this book, now I just have to wait patiently for the next one to come along (hopefully Quickly)

This was my favorite Holly Monroe book so far, and I can't wait for the next book! I absolutely loved this take on the omegaverse world and thought it was unique and interesting. I was invested the entire time and couldn't stop reading. I really liked that although this was an academy setting all the characters are over 20 years old. I felt that all of the characters had distinct personalities and there was a nice mix of lovable MMCs and ones that need to grovel. The cliffhanger was crazy but it just has me more excited for the second book. If you're a fan of books like Clash of Claws by Elizabeth Dear, you're going to love Daughter of Garnet!

Shifters ✔️ Omegaverse ✔️ Academy✔️ Why choose ✔️

It’s like Holly Monroe dove into my brain and pulled out a story that is everything I love! (Holly, while you were in there did you by chance see where I put my old iPod nano)

I read this so fast… I literally could not put it down. The FMC is fierce and the tension with the MMCs is 🔥. I was in love with the plot from page 1! There were some Divergent vibes, which I loved!

As a girl who loves a good MPOV, was I a little disappointed most of the book was in Zoe’s point of view? Yes! When I read the table of contents. But when I was reading the book, I thought it was the perfect choice!

Run, don’t walk to read this book! I think this just may be my favorite Holly Monroe book yet!

I fear I am unwell. Fantasy shifter omegaverse set in an academy?? Truly say less 🙂‍↕️.

I freaking loved all the characters but Cameron definitely has my heart for a couple reasons. One hot priest with a croc head but second he's just so funny without trying to be. Zoe herself is amazing ofc and definitely doesn't deserve everything she's going through but she's just doing her best 😭 Cliff is everything Zoe needs him to be but Ray and Dom 😒😒😒 Like rude both of you. And Viv is definitely the best friend everyone needs.

I loved every minute of this and truly how am I supposed to wait for the next one 😭. That ending is MEAN

I started this and couldn’t stop, read until I finished at 3am.
This was unlike any other omegaverse I’d read. The mix of religion and politics with designation was such a powerful combination. The warping of history and erasure of a goddess was enthralling.
There were so many characters to love, hate and tell them to stop being 🐔wombles and get with the program.
Zoe, the fmc, strong, determined, and considering the changes happening to her, well balanced.
Cliff, enough said.
Cameron, stalker. Wonderful
Not going through all the characters, but some you love, you’ll hate by the end.
Others? Still on the fence. You know who you are!
Love, love, love this book! ❤️❤️❤️

I do really like this version of an omegaverse. They actually shift into a creature, which was fun!

The designation are a hierarchy, and where omegas are supposed to be revered and loved; they’re actually being used and abused.

I loved the characters and feel like there was a lot misunderstanding and secrets between them that caused a lot of the strife. The road to trust is not built easily in this story.

Would 💯 recommend for fans of why choose and omega-verse, or even shifters .

This had no business being this entertaining. This is probably one of the more complex I guess is the best way to put it omegaverse books I've read in a while because the world is so different than what I'm used to when it comes to it omegaverse book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I literally screamed what the fuck when I got to the last page and realize I have to wait till November before I get all the answers and see what happens to Zoe and how her pack and her friends get her back and how she survives the craziness in between getting back to her people.

Holy crap was this book awesome! I stopped reading another book to read this one and it was oh so worth it. I stayed up until 130 in the morning to finish at and that doesn’t happen often. To say I binged this would be an understatement. I read the entire book in one day. The story line is interesting and I like that it kept me guessing.

This is honestly one of the best books I have read this year.

This was an omegaverse worth the hype. It doesn’t follow the same rules as a lot of others, and I absolutely loved it. The way Zoe was gaslighting herself in believing that she’s not hearing the goddess. I loved all the MMC’s, some have some groveling to do, but I loved them all the same. Cameron was an absolute asshat and I have a feeling we’re not going to se the last of his bullshit. I cannot wait to read the second book!

Holly Monroe had no right to do this cliffhanger to us. She is a cruel mistress and she loves every second of it!!!

Now here are my real thoughts. Zoe is the WORST CHOSEN ONE but she is the one that we need. This is going to be a pack of misfits that are so perfect to help the chosen one it is amazing. This was such an amazing story that work was the worst thing because it ment I had to put it down!

Daughter of Garnet by Holly Monroe completely pulled me in from the very first chapter. The Mystery, and twists kept me hooked, and I found myself unable to put it down because I always needed to know what was going to happen next. Zoe was an enjoyable heroine to follow, and the cast of characters made the story even more engaging. The chemistry and spice added just the right amount of heat without taking away from the plot, making it an exciting balance of romance and suspense. If you're looking for a fast-paced, addictive fantasy romance with lovable characters, plenty of tension, and a spicy edge, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I always like Holly’s books, but this one knocked it out of the park! The way she’s able to blend the Omegaverse with more of the fantasy elements is pure magic. And the plot twists are absolutely amazing. With ancient gods, mythical beasts, fated mates, and a disgusting government with even worse social expectations, this book definitely has it all. Looking forward to the next book in Zoe’s story

Well, I just found my new obsession in The Daughter of Garnet. Let me tell you, I am now chomping at the bit to read what comes next. Holly has a way of sucking you in with her writing and the amazing storylines she creates. Zoe’s story, mixed with dragons, and the omegaverse era is no different.

Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved this book. I've read other things by this author so I knew I like her writing style, but the other books I'd read were non-shifter omegaverses. I love shifter and I love omegaverses so when they come together *chef's kiss.*

I really love a strong FMC, but I do feel like sometimes the authors do to much to prove that she is strong and doesn't need a man that it gets a bit annoying. Zoe wasn't like that at all, she was strong but in a very human (well shifter) way. Each of her men where unique and had their own distinct relationships with the FMC.

Truthfully my main complaint is that the next book isn't out and now I have to wait :(
