If the “Lord of the Bears” books were put into one long running novel, I would consider book 3 to be the best place to STOP the first novel (with 4 being a great place to start a sequel novel, had it been in that format). The story does just squish so much into the first two that it really feels like they should all run together as one long narrative. I’ll probably keep saying that in every book, just like I’ll probably say that I disliked the fast and sometimes choppy pacing. That being said, it is a lot more bearable now. See what I did there? Seriously though, this is actually better than the first two. It’s very clear the author is just getting more and more comfortable with this premise and is taking more chances with it. I do find the constant focus and reminder of the love between Jenny and Logan to get old, run a little too long, and seem to play little part in some of parts where they were located. This doesn’t make them terrible, but it does get a little tough to being reminded every two minutes how powerful their love is. It’s not something that is put into question too often (not that it never does, it does…especially in this book).

I actually like Markus. I almost felt sympathetic for him at first, but the more the story goes on, the less sympathetic I felt, but I still enjoyed him. There was something about him that made him a threat but not a threat. I won’t give away any of it, since the story is short and this plays a major factor for a good chunk of this story. What I will say is that his character was interesting and, until it’s pointed out, you’re not sure exactly how genuine he is. Is hey lying? Is he telling the truth? Is he telling a HALF-truth? That being said, I think some of the interactions between Markus and the other characters are a little disjointed (most particularly when it comes to him trying to speak to Jenny). I still LIKE his character though. I also like how the threat could have potentially been terrible on a physical level, but the real hammer to the situation was what this threat would do emotionally to the characters. It brings up a lot about the desperation and the trust when it comes to a disagreement on a large scale between the characters.

The fight scene though was just not doing it for me. I understand what the author was trying to do and these high-action scenes are a real pain to write, since it’s putting into words something she sees visually in her head like a movie. It’s obviously not an area she’s perfected yet, and it shows, but you still get the idea. It normally wouldn’t bother me so much, but I did get a little bit confused mid-fight about what was going on.

As usual, I will fault the pacing on this. Overall, the pacing is getting a little better and I am resolved to just have to accept that it will be at this pace as the series goes on (but I’m still going to complain from time to time), but that being said, I do think there were some parts that needed to be drawn out a little more. I mean, aside from its general pace. Even at the quick pace, I think certain scenes and situations would have paid off much more if they were stretched out a wee bit more and immersed the reader a little more into Jenny’s situation. It just felt like it skipped over it so fast when there was a little more potential to tantalize readers and make you feel a little more nervous for what Jenny’s decisions could mean for her relationship.

I do like that the story takes you in one direction at the start and then has you in another court in the end. Perhaps it’s just given away a little too obviously in the later part of the middle, but I think that’s up to personal taste. I did get something out of it, since, as I said, I actually rather liked the character of Markus. I honestly really did wonder what would happen at the end and what decisions would be made and what consequences this would lead to. I liked that the “answer to all of Jenny’s problems” was so obvious and in your face. With how the first two books were written, I honestly thought this was a bad idea, showing a real lack of storytelling element by the author by making answers way too obvious. Well, I ate crow when I read on to find that it wasn’t QUITE as simple as it let on and there really WAS a lot more to consider. With this monkey-wrench thrown in, I honestly didn’t know what path Jenny would choose. On the one hand, I wanted her to do this one thing, but then figured that it wasn’t worth it and she should do this other thing.

While fast-paced, it is very clear that Jenny has this option put out in front of her and she really does battle herself over it. There’s a real conflict in her and none of the answers are easy to accept, which actually made this one the better of the three books, since now you really get into one of the psyches of the characters. We kind of get glimpses from Logan throughout and little nothings here and there from Jenny. Should she move in? Will they do this? Will they do that? But, now it’s really a serious decision she cannot just make so lightly and, for the style the story is told it, it’s very clear she struggles with this decision and what her ultimate choice will mean for her and how it will change her relationship.

There is a scene in the end that mentions a Shifter Council. This actually isn’t a bad idea, though I’m not entirely clear as to how it works. It’s hard to really understand how every clan functions and how it chooses its lords. It’s not clear how much of the world this council encompasses. Is it just a local clan, a specific clan, all clans within this group? It’s very unclear and perhaps it’s never meant to explain it in that great a detail, but there are things that happen involving some of the clans that make me wonder how certain things are handled on an individual level (via clan) and what losses of leaders mean to the clans personally affected and how this somehow becomes issue with clans collectively (different types). It’s not the main focus and it’s really meant more to build up the desire to read book 4. On the one hand, it was awkward, which was a bit annoying, but it apparently did what it was supposed to do since I started reading book 4 immediately afterwards.

So overall, this was actually a pretty good story and it is driving things along. As I said in the beginning, if all the books were to be told as one long novel, Book 3 would be the end of the first novel where Book 4 would begin a second novel. This is where you feel enough of a shift of tempo, mood, topic, and even a little time to make the distinct sections. I’m not sure how long this series will go on. They are coming out at such a fast pace that it’s really hard to see where this end will be or how the end will go. There are a lot of unanswered questions and now there’s some world building starting up…sort of. I can see what feels like experimentation in this book and some of it works and some of it doesn’t, but the attempts are good enough to enjoy to some capacity.

If you’ve made it to book 2, definitely check out book 3. The dynamic of the story changes just enough to keep it from getting dull and start to make the reader curious. Those who have made it this far, I have a feeling they’ll be eager to see what goes down in book 4.

Paranormal Shape-Shifter Story, Part Three

Logan and Jenny have a fairytale relationship. Then, without warning, an outside force threatens their happiness.

Jess Hayek continues the story in Lord of the Bears (Bear-Lord Book 3). Ms. Hayek does an excellent job with the short story format, proving her prowess as an erotic storyteller.

Love So Strong That Its Beyond Words

I gave this book a rating of 5 because I loved it. Logan would do anything to protect Jenny. He loves her with all of his heart. I recommend this book to anyone who is 18 or older and loves shifter books.

Interesting story...

About a girl I'm not sure I like and a sexy rich shifter. I am pretty sure that I am not going to get more of the series. It was free and I am not entirely sure if it was worth my time. I might give Jess another shot with another one of her books.

A Vampire?

This book introduced another supernatural creature. .a vampire and a slimy one at that. And this book like the first two are just real plain, fast reading. There's not a strong plot in these books. Just easy , fast reading.
