I was so looking forward to reading Chimera: Scourge of the Gods, as it promised to be the start of a great series. Unfortunately, I had to bail 1/4 of the way into the book, which is saying something because it's VERY VERY RARE that I give up on a book, but this particular book has numerous problems. And only a small portion of them are the author's fault, because with a little polish, this could be a passable B-movie type read, and that's the problem. There's no polish. The writing tends to be heavy, and a bit clunky, at times, and we have the problem of Information Dump. Yes, the reader needs to know some of the characters' backstories, but this information should be woven into the narrative so we learn about the characters little by little. Large chunks of backstory slow the progression of the story, bringing it almost to a halt, as the author bores the reader to tears telling the reader everything they need to know about the character, and probably some things that have no relevance whatsoever. Stilted, formulaic dialogue create for some eyeroll moments, as they appear to be lifted from bad SyFy movie script. All this is sad because the packaging for the novel is awesome. And this is where the publisher carries their share of the guilt.

The publisher is guilty of creating a great package that captures the reader's attention, but not making sure the inside is worthy of the awesome cover art. Meaning, there's little to no editing involved here. And mind you, this is not the first time I've experienced this.

From poorly constructed sentences, the ignoring of basic grammar rules, and misspellings, many of which would have been caught with a word processor's spelling and grammar check, the reader is constantly being pulled from the story or is forced to go back and re-read something to fully comprehend what the author is trying to express. Which is really a shame, because as I said, this had the promise of being the beginnings of an exciting series. And it makes me seriously question reading more of the author if he's being published by the same publisher, as he seems to have these really great ideas that aren't being allowed to meet their full potential.

Review of this book.

Really great! I enjoyed every minute of this story. Fast paced with many twists and turns. The ending was so incredible. I never saw it coming! This author seems to get better and better with each book! I have no idea where he gets his ideas from. He just needs to keep putting those ideas into new books. He has a winner no matter what he chooses to write the story about. I am running out of words to describe how good his books are.If you enjoy this genre you must read the series, and any other books that he has written.

An author who tells a good story

I really enjoyed this book! This author didn't bow down to the whiners who thinks every story has to be scientifically accurate and steeped in boring realism so they don't have to use there God given imagination because they are to lazy. Thank you to the author for taking my imagination and my mind on a trip of the fantastic. I miss stories like this so much. Now where's the movie!

Fun stuff!

Like a kaiju God of War, Chimera is part video game, part kaiju flick. Godzilla Final Wars with less cheese and gods instead of alien antagonists. If you like kaiju, check it out!
