Rate this book
Prince Ryuu hates his father, Emperor Midian. When he’s forced to buy a slave, he defiantly chooses Drakon instead of a woman. Because he’s determined to overthrow his father’s empire, he can’t afford to show vulnerability, but Drakon is more compelling than he’d anticipated. For an Arethuza warrior, affection is a weakness that can lead to death.

Drakon isn’t really a slave—he’s a black dragon, considered cursed by everyone. Despite his people’s distrust, he will do anything to keep them safe, even submit to an Arethuza prince. He never expected to find love, and that complication could ruin his plans to sabotage the emperor’s war campaign. Though Ryuu is his fated mate, their fledgling bond is a secret too dangerous for Drakon to reveal.

Will their duty tear them apart? Can honor prevail in a war that might be too violent for even the strongest dragon warrior?

Awesome but way too short fantasy shifters story! Loved Prince Ryuu and Drakon, a Dragon shifter! Yay! Those two are so fucking hot together, they could have melted iron!!!

All in all, it was an awesome fast paced read and I enjoyed the fantasy setting. Would love to read more about Ryuu and Drakon’s world!

Now off to track down more Dragon shifters stories!

It was enjoyable but nothing more...

The writing style seemed so... simple, I guess. But again, I'm reading Captive Prince right now and it sets a super high standard 😉

What can I say except the story line was well written and the characters were well established but it was missing a little something extra.

I absolutely loved "Captive Fire"!  Just straight up loved it.  It was an incredible story of love and good triumphing over evil.  There was romance, action, intrigue, and sex.  Oh...and did I mention dragon shifters?  Oh yes.  Dragon shifters.  **SWOON**

The blurb sums it up pretty well, so I don't want to rehash all the details.  Here's a quick rundown.  Prince Ryuu is being forced by his father to take a slave.  The King wants him to choose a female so Ryuu can start cranking out heirs, but Ryuu has a different plan.  He chooses a male, not only to defy his father, but because he simply prefers men to women.  Drakon (really...the name tells you all you need to know), the slave he chooses has an alterior motive by being up for auction.  All becomes clear rather quickly as the story takes off.

I loved the chemistry between Ryuu and Drakon.  Of course, it's an Erin Leaf (LOVE her!!) story, so they're VERY sexy with heat just radiating from them, but there was also humor, affection, and a very powerful love between them.  It's not a very long book, so their relationship begins rather quickly, but that's ok.  It's not something that is forced on the reader.  You really want them to bet together as soon as possible because you know that they're meant to be mates.  There's some other stuff too, but I'm not telling!  **Kenna makes lip zipping motions**

Along with the love story, there is a fast paced plot.  I enjoyed the battle scenes, and I really liked when Drakon is reunited with his people...the people who (he thinks) want nothing to do with him.  There was plenty of tension, and it held my attention through the whole book.  I was never bored, and I was very satisfied with the ending.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book.  It's got something for everyone...and everything for a lot of others.  It's awesome! This book was reviewed by a member of the review staff at Cocktails and Books. The name of the reviewer can be found under the post categories.

3.5 star review by The Blogger Girls.

This is a fun, jam packed little dragon story. It’s short but complete.

Ryuu is biding his time until he can take down his evil father. In the meantime, his father is forcing Ryuu’s hand in providing him with an offspring which he believes will give him a strong, hopefully dragon blooded, child. That is, after all, why he married Ryuu’s mother, the woman he took after he raided her people and who it is rumored to have dragon bloodlines. Thinking to thwart his father’s plan, Ryuu takes on a male slave.

Drakon is sweet, but he also has a plan to take out the evil king. Basically shunned by his people for being a black dragon, the most feared kind, he decides to go it alone and allows himself to become a slave. It is pure luck that he ends up with Ryuu.

It takes some time for them to fully trust one another, but they align themselves pretty quickly as circumstances somewhat force that to happen. I really liked them together and was pretty much rooting for them from the get go. There is plenty of mystery and action to go along with the romance and hot sex.

This is a fast-paced read, and I definitely wish it had been longer. However, I never felt as though there was anything missing. It really was a complete story that gave just enough background, world building, plot and relationships to make it whole. If you love a good dragon story, be sure to give this a try.

**Grammar**

I wanna start saying that I could have really loved this book, the idea was great and the MCs were amazing together, but all went too fast and there was so little focus on their relationship or on the story that sometimes I found myself getting a bit bored.

The book starts with Prince Ryuu buying a slave. His father demanded him to buy one, but the man was expecting his son to get a female slave not a man. The Emperor is a cruel man, he is obsessed with power and enjoys having slaves and thinks nothing of the women in his reign, they are only breeders and nothing more. He knows that his son is gay but he wants heirs, he believes that his wife's blood and thus his son's blood, has some kind of power.
Ryuu isnt like his father. He fakes being the perfect son, but in reality he is the most wanted rebel, hiding his identity under a fake name, the Desert Dragon. He is helping the other rebels and planning a coup d'etat to finally free his people of their terrible king.
He doesnt want a slave, he thinks that chaining another person is terrible and that all men have the right to be free, but he needs to follow his father's orders or he will suspect. In the end he decides to get a male slave.
Drakon is beautiful and strong, since the first time he meets the prince he cant understand why the man doesnt act like a master but a friend. He doesnt order Drakon around, he is kind and smart and the other man knows that there is more hiding behind the mask of the perfect prince.
They are attracted to each other, and both dont know why this is happening so fast, they have had both other experiences but nothing is really explained about their past or their previous lovers.Drakon feels the mate pull btw them, but he thinks that this is impossible since a dragon can feel this pull only towards another dragon and for all he knows he is the only one of his generation. He is a black dragon, his people are scared of him and dont want him to be their next leader, but this never stopped Drakon from fighting for them and trying to free them. He is risking his life in this under cover mission to try and kill the Emperor. He was ready to act like the perfect slave but he soon understands that with the Prince he doesnt need to fake. Ryuu is smart and knows that Drakon isnt like he wanna make him believe, but he is much more.
Soon they are talking and confessing their real intentions and Drakon is surprised to find out that the Prince is the famous rebel that is helping his people. Not much later, they end up having sex, but is not only that, they are making love. When Ryuu is sleeping, Drakon starts crying, he found his mate but he is human and he is sure that the prince doesnt feel the same pull.

He is wrong.

The book moves really fast and we dont see a lot of scenes with the MCs together, but the author tells us that their relationship is growing also if we dont see them spend time together or talk.
The Emperor that still wants heirs and knows that his son will never give him some, tries to kidnap Ryuu's cousins, but the prince leading the attack is able to let them escape and fake their deaths. His father is angry and storms into his room. He asks the guards to take Drakon and kill him. Ryuu stops them and agrees to his father terms. He has a month to find a woman and get her pregnant.

His father leaves the room and our MCs are finally alone. They start talking and Ryuu explains to Drakon that he is not gonna do what his father asked him, and that they have only 1 month to be happy, bcs he is sure that once the time is up, his father will kill them. Drakon tells him that he shouldnt be so pessimist and Ryuu replies that he is only realist, but that doesnt stop him from thinking that this month will be the happiest of his life bcs Drakon is with him.

Ryuu doesnt know that they completed the mate bond and he still doesnt know that Drakon is a dragon or that he too has the dormient gene.

When his father finds out that his cousins are alive understands that his son his plotting against him, he tries to kill Drakon and force his son to do as he asked and give him heirs. Ryuu's mother, despite being ill and dying from cancer, tries to help her son and attacks her hustand with a knife. In the confusion, Ryuu's guards and loyal friends, grab their prince and take him out of his room, Drakon that was fighting against the guards dragging him and now free, follows them. The prince is in shock and only Drakon's words are able to make him focus again. He is mouring his mother but he knows that if they dont escape their plan will never work and his father will continue abusing his people. His mother is dead but her sacrifice will free their people and him.

We dont know what happens after they are able to escape and this was one of the thing that annoyed me, I know tha the author needed to go fast since the book was short but I wanted to know more about them, their friends and their planning.

We see them one month later attacking the palace, and is in this occasion that finally Drakon confesses to Ryuu that he is a dragon and that Ryuu too has the gene. Something that he found out only after he understood who was Ryuu's mother. They are still talking, and really maybe explaining this in the middle of the battle wasnt the smartest thing, when their spaceship gets hit by a laser cannon. They are crashing and Drakon doesnt have any other choice, he changes into his dragon form and saves himself and his mate. Ryuu is surprised but at the same time he isnt scared. They are winning when a laser cannon hits one of Drakon's wings and breaks it. They are falling and Drakon has lost consciousness and Ryuu doesnt have time to think, something inside him is asking him to change and he doesnt know what this means. Few seconds later he transforms in his dragon's form and is able to save them both, crashing on earth with his body around Drakon's.

They win the war, but Drakon is badly hurt and doesnt wake up. Later when they meet with Drakon's people and Ryuu asks them to heal him, they tell him that only his mate can heal his dragon form, bcs only a mate can push the other to change and start the healing process. They dont know that Ryuu is Drakon's mate or that he is now the new Emperor, but this secret is soon revealed when Ryuu changes in his dragon form, a magnificent silver dragon and heals Drakon.

In the epilogue we see them weeks later (or months? I forgot) and they are now living together in the new palace they are building for the new capital that will reunite Drakon's people(forgot to say that he too was a prince) with Ryuu's people. Finally there is peace and since dragons live for centuries and mated ones also more, this peace will last a lot of time.

The book wasnt bad but missed a lot of things and sometimes one of those was the feelings. I wanted more scenes btw the MCs, about their growing relationship, their friends, their families, their past. The author goes really too fast and doesnt explain a lot of things. Most of the crucial scenes happen off page. Sadly bcs I really liked the idea the author had for the plot, this sort of futuristic/fantasy city, war, and the emenies to lovers trope is one of my favourite.

I really loved the story. It was a little short, but, even from the beginning the characters already felt good for me. Their love was a little instalove, but, I feel that they already respected and liked wach other even before the bond start doing its thing.

I like the set up of the plot. The world is also interesting, but I wish the author had spent more time in the beginning to establish it more. The climax is a bit confusing imo.

This was a surprisingly dark and heavy but still very hopeful and sweet dragon shifter story.

It’s high on angst and its sort of a dystopian flavor dragon shifter story but it has all the elements you’ll want if you like insta love/lust and fated mates with some high adventure thrown in.

“Captive Fire” by Erin Leaf is an erotic m/m paranormal romance featuring Prince Ryuu, heir to the oppressive and misogynistic Emperor Midian. His choice of a male slave, Drakon, has multiple implications…for both of them. Ryuu doesn’t realize that his new companion has ulterior motives and far more power than is apparent, and their attraction to each other puts them both in mortal danger. They will have to learn to trust each other in order to access the true benefits of their pairing, but can each dare let down his guard?

It is difficult to establish a distinctive world with unique characters within the confines of a novella but the author effortlessly drew me into this world and made me care about these characters. I love stories with dragons, and the mystery that surrounds the concept of dragons with respect to these cultures adds to the intrigue of the story. The sensual interludes are combined with harrowing threats to these two sexy males, and the heartwrenching decisions that must be faced cause the reader to both sympathize with the main characters and loathe the villains who cause the conflict. Given the brevity of the story, there are many details that it would be nice to have and some of the action is very compressed, but I was intrigued by the overall story and sad to see it end. I would definitely like to visit this world again and get a deeper connection to more of its peoples, so I hope there are other titles still percolating in the imagination of this talented author!

I really enjoyed reading Captive Fire by Erin M. Leaf. The characters were vibrant and the story very different from any dragon shifter story I have read so far. I like how this is a well rounded story and feels very finished. It could even be a series there are characters that could be spun off too. Prince Ryuu is living under the thumb of his vicious and horrible father. His father demands he take a slave. Ryuu does even though he deplores slavery. It is not the slave his father wanted for him. He picks a man. One who is off in the corner but calls to his soul. Ryuu, is kind hearted. He has a clear set of morals despite his father and he is brave. He risks his life many times in this story for what he believes in.

Drakon might look like a slave but he is anything but one. He needs the prince to choose him so he can complete his mission. But once he gets to know the prince and what he is like, maybe joining together is the way to go and defeat the king once and for all. I liked his sense of honor. He knows what he must do to save his people and he suffers for it gladly to save them. He has honor, and a kind heart. He recognizes the fact Ryuu needs him as much as he needs Ryuu.
Over all this book is really well done. I loved the whole politics of the planet. I liked getting to know Drakon and his people too. I would love to know more about them all in the future. This is one story I really couldn’t stop reading over and over again.

Another great find from the recommendations. This story has everything; romance, tyranny, rebellion, plotting, prejudice, shape shifting, and injustice all set in a fantasy setting. The book is kind of like a cross between Spartacus war of the dammed and game of thrones (and believe me I had many of those visuals while reading this book).

I loved the strength of the two main characters Rhyu and Drakon. They suit each other so well, so similar yet so different. Light and dark just like their dragons. I like the fact that Rhyu chooses Drakon as his slave to save him but that Drakon saves him in return and that it is the love between them that helps Rhyu to find his dragon and cure his mate, just as it was Drakon's love for Rhyu that helped him to sacrifice himself to save his lover.

One of my favourite scenes is towards the end in the desert where Rhyu meets Drakon's family. Everyone has family like that. Those that care, and those that seek to control or have prejudice. Thankfully love wins out.

Oh what a great book! I loved everything about it. The characters were great (and well thought out and written). The world building was excellent. The descriptions were very detailed, so I could get a proper image of the landscape. The heat between Ryuu and Drakon was perfect. They burned up my Kindle. I love how they interacted with each other. They fell for each other rather quickly, but it's makes complete sense. They both have something the other needs...comfort and closeness especially. The underlying plot had a lot of action and some mystery too. Really, this is just an awesome book.
I love everything Erin Leaf writes, but with "Captive Fire", she set a new bar. I highly recommend it.

Rating 3.5 This was enjoyable for its interplay between Ryuu and Drakon. It seemed a little strange that Ryuu trusted him so much from the very beginning but it was explained away. Both men have secrets and are caught up in a war for each of their people. There is a palpable sense of urgency and suspense as time runs out and the Emperor's threats loom larger and larger. The ending is very satisfying and the epilogue well done. The sex was more sensual rather than straight erotica. I will definitely check out more of Leaf's work.

This is the first book I have read from this author and I was pleasantly surprised!

Erin knows how to keep a readers attention with romance and humor with action and science fiction thrown in for good measure. It was easy to keep turning the pages and keep very interested in the story. I enjoyed the characters just as well.

I can't wait to read more from this author. Another author to put on my favorites list!

This was a cute but short story of dragon shifters. Ryuu and Drakon are bonded mates who are trying to dethrone the emperor or Ryuu's father. Their relationship started out in an unlikely way but then they realized they were working towards the same goal their bond only became stronger.
