When Michael Duncan is sent to investigate the disappearance of several dragon subjects, he finds himself in a bind. Locked in a dungeon, his only hope lies wrapped in a bundle of cloth tossed at his feet. One kiss and his life is changed forever. Hunted by his own people for crimes he didn't commit, Michael has to learn a whole new life at the hands of a beautiful woman. Can she help him clear his name, or will just being in her presence get him sentenced to death? Carissa Markel doesn't know who this man chained to the wall is, but he's her only chance for escape. She has power, but, born without a voice, she lacks the means to wield it. One choice, made in desperation, sends them running for his life. Does she have the strength to help him clear his name? And what will her brother, the King of Dragons, do if he finds out what she's done? That's immaterial, the real question is… can she keep her hands off him long enough to find out?
Originally from Ohio, Julie always dreamed of a job in science. Either shooting for the stars or delving into the mysteries of volcanoes. But, life never leads where you expect. In 2007, she moved to Mississippi to be with her significant other.
Now a mother of a hyperactive red headed boy, what time she’s not chasing down dirty socks and unsticking toys from the ceiling is spent crafting worlds readers can get lost it. Julie is a self-proclaimed bibliophile and lover of big words. She likes hiking, frogs, interesting earrings, and a plethora of other fun things.
I don't tend to DNF books that I'm reading (especially when I'm almost done with them, like this time) but I seriously couldn't stand this book.I thought that this would be a good fantasy/new adult book but all I got were horny characters and major plot holes. And I just couldn't ignore the fact that the main character/the dragon lady decided that it was okay for her to touched Michael,ya know, while he's unconscious.
"Even unconscious, her pheromones made him hard. She ran her hand over the ridge in his pants. He was definitely a prime specimen of his species."
So yeah...I've wasted less than two hours of my life.I could've watched iZombie instead.
Kind of fun in a light, action movie sort of way, but the plot was pretty bare bones, the characters had moments of being amazingly dumb and didn't feel particularly well rounded or interesting in and of themselves, and there was no world building at all.
Where did the dragons come from (several times it was mentioned they "didn't exist" when the main character was a kid)? Why are they policed and protected by humans? When was Eternity (the human security force) formed? How do governments deal with the idea of dragons and their "king", all of whom seem to exist within their countries but aren't beholden to their laws? What's up with the 3 different forms? Why doesn't the princess have a voice and how did they discover this kiss-stealing thing? Why does it only work on dragons? What is rune magic and how does it work? I could go on, but that'd get really long and tedious. Basically what I'm trying to say is that if you're going to throw a bunch of things in to a story to try and flesh it out then you really need to go the whole hog and explain how or why things work the way they do.
I give it 2 "it was okay" stars, but I'm more than happy to leave the story here and move on to other things.
Born without a voice, she had learned how to borrow the voices of other dragons, but it had to be a dragon. He was most definitely not a dragon. Maybe that part of her lore was wrong. Maybe she could use anyone’s voice.
Michael is a human on the Elite squad - bodyguards to supernaturals. He’s investing dragon disappearances when he’s captured and chained in a cell. Carissa is thrown in with him.
When she attempts to steal his voice, Carissa doesn’t realize that would turn Michael into a dragon.
Whoops.
“I know. I should never have gotten my mouth near his, but hindsight’s twenty-twenty. We’ve all made stupid mistakes. This one just happens to take the cake.” Carissa hung her head and sighed again. “We just have to get through it.” She closed her eyes and asked herself, But, how?
It’s funny. Michael has no idea what’s happening until it’s happened already. Also the dragons have a battle form that’s really big, but their main form is a small dragon a little bigger than a cat. I’ve always wondered why dragons shifted to humans if their main form was so awesome. But if you wanted to be bigger than a cat without using your energy and magic, that makes a little more sense.
There’s could be more world building. If you’re looking for a serious fantasy with dragons with extensive world building - you may want to pass. But if you’re looking for a light standalone fantasy with dragons and romance you might like this one. I liked it enough to borrow the sequel from the library.
I was given a rough draft from the author for an honest review... First of all, the cover is absolutely amazing and it captures the book really well. Michael is an investigator that has been around dragons all of his life. He respects them and loves his job. But one night finds his life altered. Carissa finds herself locked in a cell with Michael. She doesn't completely understand what is going on and why she was captured, but when she looks at Michael, she knows that he is only one that can help her. A kiss changes them both. For the simple kiss to get them out of the cell changes Michael's life forever. Hunted by both humans and dragons, can Michael help both him and Carissa. On the Accidental Wings of Dragons, I just have to stay this is going to be a MUST READ! Julie Wetzel comes up with some awesome ideas for stories that are just awesome. Can't wait for this to be released!
I really enjoyed this story which is the first book of a new series about Dragons.
About 220 ish pages of entertainment and an interesting take on Dragon Shifters - I enjoy Julie Wetzel's books she has some really good ideas and knows how to incorporate them into a fun and light narrative.
The protagonists Michael and Carissa kept me entertained with their relationship, there was action and intrigue and the inner dragon voice is really amusing. I'm looking forward to the next book, hopefully it will be a bit longer :)
I found this book to be very unique. The little details about dragons, their colors and brooding were interesting. The voice thing really threw me for a loop. It was an odd birth defect that made things so much more complicated. The author spent so much time explaining dragons that the world & character building were a bit lacking. Still not bad. I did enjoy the story and its uniqueness. Will I read book 2? Maybe.
I'm not a huge fan of Dragon books but this one was pretty awesome. I loved that they had two sizes that they could turn into. The smaller dragon seems cute and adorable. The larger is huge and protective. The story is a little shaky at first but quickly picks up speed. Lots of hilarity, especially when Michael fumbles through being a dragon. A fan of Wetzel's Kindling Flames series, I easily gravitated towards this book. She does a great job in writing a creative story. A vibrant and detailed setting easily pulls the reader in. She doesn't disappoint in this story of romance and dragons. I enjoyed the sensuality of the story and liked that she was not graphic with details. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a new and different read.
**I received this a copy of this book, from the publisher, in exchange for a honest review.**
Dragons and humans live together in this paranormal story, but the dragons need guarding and that is the role of the Eternity Elite. The story jumps straight into the action with Michael Duncan chained to a wall and locked in a dungeon, unable to sit or drink. When a bundle of what he initially thinks are cloths is thrown into the cell, he hadn't anticipated it being the sister of the dragon King, Carissa Markel. She is a powerful mage but is unable to speak unless she "borrows" the voice of someone else. With an immediate attraction between them, can they escape? Why have they been kidnapped?
There's a double dealer, someone is betraying the Elite but can they prove it and bring them to justice? This is action packed but a lot of the time is spent with the two ogling each other. I enjoyed reading it and presume a lot of the questions it raised for me will be answered in future stories in the series. The author has created dragon shifters who can take three forms - human, small dragons or huge ones. The story has a great deal of attention of the brooding of dragons which sometimes detracted from the suspense and plot but it is still enjoyable and I may well read the other books to discover just what the background information to it all is and what happens in future to the new white/translucent dragon!
I usually don't read New Adult books, not because they're older and I'm used to reading about teenagers and the like, but because I always have a hard time finding one that I like enough to actually finish. Of course, this one being about dragons certainly gave me enough incentive to see it through and I'm glad I did.
There was a lot going on plot-wise but I couldn't help but feel like it kept getting obscured every time the main characters thought about how much they wanted each other. It seemed like all they thought about was sex, sex, how Michael/Carissa's body looked, sex, Mine!, and more sex. I was glad that nothing happened until the end, where we don't exactly see it but we know that they finally managed to do the deed after everything that they went through. Anyway, dragons are a norm in this modern world, they have a royalty and apparently the King has a very strong influence in the dragon and human sides too. Basically Carissa, the King's sister, gets kidnapped and ends up in a cell with Michael, who's like a bodyguard for the dragons and is researching about the recent mysterious disappearances of dragons, and while trying to escape, Carissa turns him into a dragon using magic. The rest, you can say, is history. Michael is being targeted by the rest of the bodyguards because they think he kidnapped Carissa, they have to find out who's behind the actual kidnapping, and deal with the fact that Michael turned into a dragon and has a lot to learn, and their growing attraction towards each other.
Eh, the overall story and plot was well-done, but other than that all the time it focused on sex got annoying. The sequel actually looks more promising than this one, with the focus on two new different characters that I'm sure will tie into the plot that this one started. Definitely would like to know more about this world, the dragons, and the characters mentioned in this story.
p.s. This book might not be for everyone! So keep it mind when starting this book
Not what I was expecting. The overview of the book sounded interesting, and it received good reviews, what I got was a dragon romance book. The book centered around sex with an action backdrop. If I would have known this I would not have read it.
However, if you are into romance, sexual frustration and nonstop horny situations then this is a book for you. I did a quick look at the other books in the series and they don't seem to be connected.
As I am not into dragon porn, I think I will pass on the next books in the series.
On the accidental wings of a dragon So I judged a book by it's cover and it's name apparently. I simply can't say more about this book other than I was disappointed. I was looking forward to an enthralling adventure about the mystical creature that a dragon is and instead I got...... Well you'd have to read it to find out because I will not retell the story. Maybe someone else might like it and I wont spoil it for others. 2 stars. Sorry. And you only got the two stars cuz I liked the cover and the idea of the plot you promised me.
Wetzel probably a good time writing this, but I’m not into urban fantasy soft porn—even among dragons. The plot and most “action” involved supposedly mature people who act like teens. Hormonally-challenged teens.
Nope, not much to recommend it. Why not one star? She’s actually a good writer. Judging from her website (only) I guess she specializes in hot romances. There are those who will appreciate this … stuff. But not me.
Cover art is apparently computer generated and not that good.
I really don't like leaving ratings below 3 stars but I just had to. When I got the book from Amazon, I thought the cover promised adventure and a lot of action. But when I read it, I didn't like it.
First, I don't know what world this was or what time. I was left to figure it out by myself.
Second, I thought there was going to be some quest or action. Yeah, there were scenes of action but it felt like it's not the main point.
Then, there's the characters. Why are they just so horny?
The h is sweet, dragon shifter and she saves the H. He is human until she turns him, and then the fun begins. It's almost a childish plot, very much a PG story with goodies and baddies. I would have liked a darker and more mature plot, - just OK.
This book was different from any other dragon book I've read. I like dragon stories and read them often. As I said, this one was different but it was different in a good way.
Michael is a member of the Eternity Elite, who are guards in charge of guarding the King of the Dragons and his sister, too. Michael is chained to a wall, can't sit or get any water when a bundle of "something" gets tossed into the cell with him. He hasn't had any food or water for several days and when the bundle starts to move, he discovers it's a woman. But she is injured.
He can't do much to help her but he does have some morphine in one of the pockets of his pants and eventually she brings him water. Not in the conventional way since there is no cup or any glasses. The water in the cell is not good and she puts a spell on it to make it taste good. While she is giving him water, she turns him into a dragon.
He doesn't find out until they are escaping that she is not just an ordinary woman, she is the King's sister, Carissa. She'd been kidnapped and thrown into the same cell with him. He doesn't know this at the time, but he is the prime suspect.
Now, it's a challenge to keep Michael hidden, prove his innocence to the King, and find out how the real perpetrator is.
The book is filled with action, adventure, and a nice dose of spice that doesn't get obscene. I wasn't too crazy about this big, hunky guy being a dinky little dragon even if he was cute, but it all worked out in the end.
This book really surprised me. It is far and away my favorite book so far this year. I always enjoy Julie Wetzel’s writing style and get lost in her stories, but this one really wow’ed me. First off, it’s really fast-paced. Michael and Carissa escape from a dungeon but just keep getting into sticky situations one right after the other. I laughed out loud several times as their escapades took a devilishly unexpected and absolutely delightful twist. Through it all, Michael is a decent, gentlemanly, sensitive person. He is strong when it counts and he is utterly loyal but he certainly can’t be categorized as “alpha”. I loved his sense of duty and responsibility. Carissa is a strong, privileged woman who is ruled by no one. Her brother, the king, has always protected her and loves her fiercely.
Second, it’s original, set in a world in which an super-secret elite force protect dragons. The dragons are magical and mystical. Carissa’s magical powers are unequaled but she pays a high price for her magical gift.
This is a fresh tale of deception, love, and adventure that proves again Julie’s imagination knows no bounds.
I’ve hosted a lot of Wetzel’s books on my blog, but I’d never read one her books before. Even though the plots were intriguing, she writes fantasy and that I didn’t read. Until I did. Now that I’m a fantasy fan, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one of her books. Man, am I glad I did. I absolutely loved On The Accidental Wings of Dragons.
The book has everything I look for in a great story: likeable characters, suspense, romance and a bit of intrigue. I especially enjoyed how Wetzel created a fantasy world that seemed so utterly believable. It’s our world but with a bit of magic and fantasy thrown in – something every reader can relate to. Wetzel jumps right into the story as well. A man chained to a wall and a woman in a rug thrown into a prison cell. I couldn’t put the book down after that great start. The book was action-packed but slowed down long enough for the romance between Michael and Carissa to simmer and finally boil. Michael’s transition and how he handled it was very realistic as well. His peanut gallery was cute.
Even if you’re not a fan of the fantasy genre, you should give On The Accidental Wings of Dragons a try. It’s a quick, fun read.
A very original read. We are so used o have the female changing to fit the male that it is very surprising when the opposite happens. Carissa and Michael both end up in a dungeon without any idea who put them there or why. The princess of the dragons and the protector. What happens between them is a suite of strange things, strong attraction and a lot of magic!! I loved how they could turn into smaller dragon form, being much more discreet and so cute! The non stop man hunt definitely didn't help a real romance to set in but the fiery passion and fierce protectiveness they share is more than enough the fill in. I had some great laughs at Michael's internal dialogue and at how Carissa would steal his voice whenever it suited her, leaving no real choice but to follow her lead. However, this didn't mean Michael was submissive at all. Both characters have an extremely strong personality, a stubborn streak a mile long and are totally fearless. I really enjoyed their story, I just wished it would have gone on for longer!!
Quite possibly the fastest I've munched through a book. As an author of a Dragon book, it's interesting to see different ideas used around the whole fire breathing monster motif.
This book was very quick to dive into the action and there was no let up until the last pages where the story seemed to stop an act early.
The constant effects of the animal nature of the creatures was explored well for both of the main characters and the passage dealing with the way one character saw the other, how he would call her Mine! as a name was excellent. How that became reciprocal by the end, also a nice touch. It did seem to constantly deal with the sexual aspect of nature all of the time where a more detailed look into anger and violence as well could have rounded the experience for all concerned.
I'll be looking for the next books to see where the larger story goes.
On the Accidental Wings Of Dragons is a paranormal romance centering on a human who has been held captive for days in a dungeon and a dragon princess who is kidnapped and dumped in there with him. Together they manage to escape and form a bond, but their problems just continue once freed and they realize they need to trust each other completely if they are going to get out of their situation unscathed.
I enjoyed this story, it was a quick read that opened up a new world without it feeling overwhelming. It is part of a series but this couple finishes up their story in this book. I would recommend to paranormal fans.
Great story! The characters are richly detailed and the plot is well defined. It starts off with a bang and keeps you hanging on the edge until you reach the end. The world portrayed in this book is detailed, complex, and fantastic. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I have read a lot of stories with dragons in them but never have I read one which had my eyes glued to the pages. I love what the author has done creating a world where they intermingle with humans and the main character was very entertaining. Kudos! This was a very good read.
