When a new scanner at the Pig Palace Food Emporium erupts into a swirling portal, revealing a stunned British soldier, grocery checker Ivy O'Neal is sure she's the victim of an elaborate hoax--until she sees her own face in the artwork of a long-gone Edwardian painter.
Haunted by the woman who appeared to him in the midst of battle on the barren South African veldt, Harrison Darby, Lord of Wyndham, fears he's gone mad. Recovering from injuries, and awaiting court-martial proceedings for an order he did not give, he can't stop painting the woman in ivy nor the ridiculous caricature of a pig. Odd items begin to drop to the floor of his room from the recurrent swirling lights, and then the woman herself drops to his feet, confirming his insanity, and stealing his heart.
Publishers Weekly called Pajer's A SPARK OF DEATH “deft and highly entertaining,” and the New York Journal of Books said it was “a breathless journey from beginning to end.” With THE FIRST TIME, award-winning author Bernadette Pajer departs from historical mysteries to take readers on a romantic adventure to rescue a troubled soldier and discover a love that is timeless.
Bernadette Pajer spent her childhood in Seattle, surrounded by the beautiful Cascade and Olympic mountains and Puget Sound. She holds a degree from the University of Washington, Bothell, where she studied CLA (Cultural, Literature, and the Arts) in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Science program. Research is her favorite activity, and she happily delves into Seattle's past and the early days of electrical invention as she plots Professor Bradshaw's investigations. She's a proud member of MWA, SinC, NW Science Writers, PNWA, and the Seattle7Writers.org.
Wonderful read! The clever plot was carefully crafted and the characters were developed to perfection. When I finished it, I was truly sorry to say goodbye to the stars of her show. The book left me wanting more Bernadette Pajer, too. But she always makes me want more! When's the next book coming out, Bernadette?????
Not sure why this book is listed twice, but I'll say again -- Bernadette Pajer has written another winner! She's done a magnificent job of creating a plot that grabs you and holds you, then leaves you wanting more. This is one book I'll read over and over!
Love time travel books and of course soul deep love, who doesn't? The story was interesting, the characters enjoyable. The story reminded me of one of my all time favorites.
The time travel device here is a scanner??? Nonsense. Its more historical fiction than T/T set in South Africa in 1901, during the Boers's War, interesting but didnt go so far in historical details, the romance was sweet and clean and with a bit of adventure.
What a wonderful read! I especially enjoyed the unexpected moments of humor, the settings -- contemporary Seattle and the South African Boer War -- and, Ivy's growth from a woman who takes life as it comes to a woman who fights for what she wants and loves.
Bernadette's now stretched her horizons to two fiction genres, which will please her Professor Bradshaw Mysteries fans and introduce more readers to her talented writing.
