Miami Jones: Toes in the Sand Collection

Rate this book
The first four novels in the series reviews are calling "A five star romp by one of the best mystery writers around." This omnibus edition contains the first FOUR books in the Miami Jones series, with over 1200 pages of fun, mystery and good dose of Florida sun

Meet MIAMI JONES.
Former ballplayer, private investigator and lover of palm tree print shirts.

Join Miami and his band of friends and associates as their quiet drinks under the palapa at their local bar are interrupted by cases that only the Miami Jones can solve.

Stiff Arm Steal

The prize possession of former football hero, part-time media personality and full-time blowhard BJ Baker has been stolen from his palatial Palm Beach home. Baker has called in the Mayor, the police, the sheriff and everyone else he can co-opt into the search. But if he really wants the person who can find it, one name keeps coming up. Miami Jones. Problem is, he can't stand Jones. And the feeling is mutual.

Miami takes on a jealous husband, a feisty ex-con and a police detective desperate to claim everyone else's 15 minutes of fame, and he finds that Florida is home to so many retired athletes he could start a pensioner football league. But can Miami hunt down the culprit before they graduate from theft to something far more deadly?

Offside Trap

A university president with delusions of grandeur. A property developer with mob ties. A crooked politician fast-tracking projects for cash. Just another day in South Florida.

When Miami Jones is hired by an old college friend to investigate the drug overdose of a star student-athlete, he is thrust into the dark intersection of academia, politics and the Miami drug world, where he finds himself fighting to not just solve the crime, but to save those he loves most.

High Lie

Miami Jones knows that South Florida has its fair share of sharks, and not all of them live in the ocean. When a young boy is dumped in the water off the coast, Miami goes looking for answers. What he finds is a world of crooked bookmakers, slick Las Vegas Casino moguls and a desperate band of brothers playing a forgotten sport. Forgotten by everyone except the person who wants the players dead.

Miami takes Florida sliding down a sinkhole rather personally, so now he’ll stop at nothing to prevent the circling sharks from consuming his beloved home.

Dead Fast

To most people Jamaica is sun, sea and rum drinks by the pool. But Miami Jones and Danielle Castle don't vacation like most people. After witnessing an assault on a young man in Montego Bay, Miami and Danielle are hired to protect a young athlete with Olympic dreams.

But there are lots of athletes with those dreams, and not all of them play by the rules. Miami and Danielle find themselves up against corrupt officials, athlete managers with a kit-bag full of dirty tricks, and a local police force that might be in it up to their necks. In a paradise where running fast is the national pastime, Miami and Danielle must go at full throttle to protect their client and help him hit the finish line alive.

It Gets Better and Better

I read "Stiff Arm Steal" awhile back and had mixed feelings about it. I wasn't sure why so I moved on to other books. This boxed set was offered in a mailing as a bargain so I snapped it up. In fact I had forgotten the author's name. I started reading, then realized I had read it and jumped to the second book in the set. Something about the writing style happened between book one and two because the second book hooked me on Miami Jones. I read straight through the set then snagged the prequel offered by joining the author's email list. It may be the best yet. Now to download the rest of the series. I am now enjoying Miami Jones and friends completely. Get the set and jump in.

I picked this set in a whim while browsing the Kindle store. I've been a fan of the South Florida mystery genre ever since reading Tourist Season many years ago. These were all very enjoyable and can be read as standalone books but I recommend reading them in order and then jumping to the fifth book in the series. Miami Jones is a nicely fleshed out character and the rest of the cast is good, including my dream bar, Longboard Kelly's.

STIFF.ARM..STEAL.
Who wouldn’t love Miami, a lot of stiff politicians, police chiefs to name a few. Why because he seems laid back and with a sense of humor he adds to their conversations. Don’t be fooled by this persona he is great at figuring out the crime. He will give free and fatherly advice to a woman who was sad, too many years in a marriage that was sad. He reassures her, she will be fine. This was about the Heisman trophies which with his comments added a good base for this story. A definite five star.
OFFSIDE. TRACK
Miami doesn’t like to hear a young promising kid has OD and it nags him to know why. A case where people say that know nothing, or anything about drugs. Then he finds he is being lied to. A story that has a small college who wants a winning sport team, the drugs and politics that go along with this. Good plot, and Miami with his humor that slips into the conversation. Good plot to figure out who all the players were.
HIGH LIE
Lucas a friend of Miami fishes a young Cuban kid out of the water. Thugs had held him up for a few hundred dollars and tossed him in. Finding it was money the kid saved to send to his papa. As usual Miami uncovers more when the jai alai team are being threatened and finding out why. Good fast action and ever dull with Miami around.

Just finished the first in the Miami Jones series, "Three Strikes", which is available only from the author's website. Easy well-written read. Plenty of plot complications and interesting, believable characters. Will dive into the rest of the set shortly.

Fun, light, Florida setting, very enjoyable read. I have read every book in this series and found them to be well written and enjoyable. The stories of hurricanes, in state school rivalries, and other aspects are very well captured.

High Octane Adventure!!!

Miami Jones - the hottest Private Investigator you’ve ever met. John D. MacDonald’s books about Travis McGee were great, and now we have A.J. Stewart - today’s greatest contemporary American mystery writer! Miami Jones is Number One!

Danielle is as good as Miami.

Another great story with a few new twists. Multiple bad guys and a few on the right side, as usual. Keep em coming.

Love the characters

Characters were very good but did not give 5 stars because the stories were a bit over the top with violence. Lost a bit of reality.

Fans of ace detective and former baseball player Miami Jones can O.D. on his exploits in the new Miami Jones Florida Mystery Series Box Set – Books 1 – 4: Toes in the Sand Collection by A. J. Stewart. I’ve read the separate books, and found them to be top-of-the-line mysteries written in the inimitable style of Elmore Leonard. Crisp, tight dialogue and riveting action scenes, laced with a large dollop of wry humor characterizes Stewart’s writing.
In Miami Jones the mystery reader will find a character to identify with. He has the sense of justice of Spenser, and the sense of humor of Milhone, and whether he’s looking into a drug overdose case involving a college student, or helping a wealthy former football star recover his stolen Heisman Trophy, Miami approaches each case with the same sense of ‘playing by the rules—until the rules don’t work.’
Stewart paints a vivid picture of south Florida and has an encyclopedic knowledge of baseball, which he wisely doles out in small and scene-appropriate doses.
Looking for some good summer reading? Get this set and you’re set to go!

So glad I found this series.

I picked up the first book Stiff Arm Steal as a freebie at Amazon, and a couple of chapters in I knew I'd be getting all the books in the series. I was delighted to find them bundled together, boxed 1-4, at a bargain price.

Miami Jones comes across to me as a mix of Magnum PI and Jim Rockford, plus his own unique self in there too. The stories are good, the secondary characters interesting. Good humor, human interest, and background keep the pages flipping.

I'm asking A. J. Stewart to please write more and write fast.

A joy to read!

I read the series back to back and lost a lot of sleep. If there were a way to rate 4.5, I would have done so. There were some minor editing glitches, and the prose was repetitive on occasion, but not enough to detract from the overall enjoyment. The descriptions of people and locations were not so detailed as to drag. All in alll it was a joy to read. Thank you Mr. Stewart.
