The Evilution: Rise of the Antichrist (Dark Tomes 1) was an interesting book. I listened to the audiobook version, narrated by SW Salzman, and I have to say his narration was far and away the best part of the book. The story follows several people, but mostly it follows Paul Peter Bradley, his girlfriend Jenny, his old pal Matt, and an uber-genius Catholic Priest Fr. Joseph David.

First of all, I have to say this: I'm a devout, practicing Catholic, and some of the theology espoused in the book from Jenny (a Catholic herself) is just blatantly wrong by 1000%. I understand this is fiction, but I had to constantly keep repeating that mantra as she made claims about end times prophecy and Church teaching which are patently false. But that's really not a big deal, it IS fiction.

The story WAS pretty interesting though. I enjoyed how it took quite a few items from Scripture and end-times speculation and weaved it into the storyline. This was done well, was well placed, and executed nicely. The dialogue was lacking, with characters going on and on in a way meant to convey real-world, imperfect speech, but it was hard for me to get absorbed by it. All the characters are supposed to be literally the smartest people on the planet, but the way they spoke sometimes it was hard to believe that. Nonetheless, the story was strong, interesting, and fairly well-paced.

It read much like one of the Christian end-times books which came out in the 90s and early 2000s, but with an R-rating, which I appreciated. It didn't pull any punches on the violence and gore, but still maintained a Christian perspective with an air of respect. I would recommend this book to people interested in this genre, but it is certainly a niche genre. However, if that is what you're looking for, check it out.

This book sounded like an interesting story and S.W. Salzman is one of my favorite narrators, so I decided to give it a try.

The premise of the story is interesting and I enjoyed the way that the author made the story progress. The idea of a (possible) antichrist using 12 people to do something is intriguing, but that is where I have a problem. Things are hinted at, people die, people fall in love, but nothing is resolved.

I don't mind a cliffhanger in a book, but this one just didn't progress enough to make me ready to jump into the next installment. A lot of ideas are thrown around, but nothing is really revealed. I never really got invested in the story or the characters that much.

Also, the first couple of chapters were really hard to get through. A really long drawn out diatribe by a (supposed) demon/devil in the second chapter nearly had me stopping at that point. If I had been reading a physical book, I am sure that I would have skipped that part.

All in all, I admit to a little disappointment in this book. The narration was amazing (as usual by Mr. Salzman), but the story just didn't grab me. If you are easily offended by the F-bomb or things that might offend your Christian beliefs, I would suggest that you steer clear of this book. I was given the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version of this book through Audiobook Boom! and chose to review it.

I received audiobook version of this book for free from the narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.

I just couldn't make myself get into this story. The writing style was just weird. It was full of long winded sentences with weird structures, which made it not suitable for audiobook format. I constantly had to rewind and relisten. After a point, it became too much effort and I had to quit.

I had managed to listen to ~ half of the book's run time and I hadn't connected with any of the characters. The story failed to engage me or pull me in. Maybe it was just not for me.

Narrator S.W. Salzman did a good job with the content he had. No complaints there. I had earlier listened to his work in another book titled "Korean Road" and had loved that.

Having loved this authors Ian McDermott series, I was eager to read something else by him and started this when I got it! I mean, I'd read it on the cover alone because it's awesome!!! So this was..... weird. I found it confusing and quite long winded to be honest! When they went into the old style talking, it just felt so, so long and unnecessary!! My mind started wandering while listening and I always know that's the time to give up. I did manage to finish the whole book, but it was a massive chore. I'm not sure if I'll continue with the series.

S.W. Salzman did a great job with this. He was the only reason I kept going!! He is clear and concise and had plenty of tones and voices for the different characters.

I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts

This cover is one of the most wicked pieces of artwork on the market today. Unfortunately, the writing contained within was difficult to trudge through.

The majority of sentences were so long my brain couldn't even catch its breath. Dialogue was often long-winded. Unnecessary back story and narrative felt condescending to readers. Too much telling, not enough showing. Adverbs were sprinkled in without care, sometimes three or four in a sentence. The romance scenes had characters laughing and making eye contact at the end of every paragraph. And I found myself rolling my eyes and skimming over paragraphs halfway through the first page.

The premise was intriguing, but the writing style was so jarring I couldn't finish the book.
