That was definitely my favourite out of the collection so far!
Reminded me a bit of a short story from creepshow. Not going to go into details as I don't want to ruin anything.
Very good, check it out

Not the greatest fan of short stories (prob because I find few that I like) so rather than talk about this mediocre offering I shall recommend one of the really excellent short stories I have read recently....but not if you don't like spiders :))

Review:
This 8th instalment in the A-Z of Horror short story series doesn't disappoint. It's a fast-paced page turner, suitably sick and horribly hideous. I'm really enjoying this series and always look forward to the next book being published. Bring on I!

Iain Rob Wright continues his A to Z of Horror anthology with "H Is for Hell," a slight but well written short story that could easily have become an episode of Tales from the Crypt. The anthology, as you might guess, is a series of horror stories, each concerning something that begins with a different letter of the alphabet. Although the style and mood of the stories vary widely, most of them share one thing in common: they are based on a particular basic fear than many people share.

The basic fear in “H Is for Hell” isn’t the underworld or the thought of going there; instead, it’s something much more common and unfortunately all too worldly. It’s the fear of the homeless, unkempt beggars and panhandlers, those who accost us in public places asking for spare change and who often make us quite uncomfortable or even scared in their presence. Author Wright taps into that unease through the person of Barbara, a businesswoman who’s having a particularly bad day. When she leaves work and stops on the way to her car to buy cigarettes, she is accosted by a most unpleasant smelling, disheveled man who asks her for change. Since Barbara is a firm believer that such people’s conditions are the result of their own bad choices, the encounter does not go well. It goes even worse when she accidentally pushes him into the path of a van and then flees the scene. At this point in the story, ironically, Barbara validates her own belief, since her eventual fate winds up being the result of that particular choice.

There’s no real surprise in “H Is for Hell”; most readers will be able to figure out the story’s ending well in advance, and the author drops a couple of big clues about what’s going to happen. But Wright has really written an old-fashioned horror morality play here, one that echoes Crypt in both substance and style. Barbara is the exact type of arrogant, dislikable character who invariably realizes just a bit too late what she’s gotten herself into.

But, although “H Is for Hell” is rather predictable, it’s still rather entertaining. The fun in a story like this is in seeing just what sort of appropriate fate is going to befall Barbara. Wright is a very descriptive writer, and his description of what happens in the rest of the story is quite detailed. Let’s just say that Barbara goes through a very hellish experience, but not one that you would immediately associate with the story’s title.

Stories like “H Is for Hell” work best by taking their time, but Wright rushes through this tale just a bit. As a result, Barbara isn’t as well developed a character as she could have been and reading about her distress isn’t as emotionally satisfying as it should be. It really would have worked better had it been about five pages longer. Still, the basic idea here is quite good, and some of the imagery at the end is definitely creepy. This Hell is definitely home to some good storytelling.

H is for Hell (A-Z of Horror book 8) by Iain Rob Wright a short horror/suspense story.

Barbara runs a successful recruitment company and everything was coming up roses until one morning one of her best sales person decided to leave and set up her own company taking with her most of Barbara's clients.

Her own Father was a bigot and he died from stress aged only fifty-nine and it rubbed onto Barbara as a homeless man begged for some change whilst she was leaving her office but Barbara stood fast to her belief that one should work for a living and not beg for it.

Barbara's decision to not donate money to this homeless man will end up with regret as the saying 'reap what you sow' springs to mind.

2.5 stars rounded up

This is your typical plot where the snob, rich adult gets what's coming to him/her. It's not badly written, but it was unfortunately predictable so early in the story.

There was also an editing or writing mistake in the Kindle version that took me out of the story. It was the next day after the 'incident' and Barbara sped past Margaret, her secretary. In the dialogue, she mentioned her own name instead of Margaret so I was genuinely confused about who said what. that was a break in my theory. I spent way more time reading that whole interaction than I had.

Ever had one of those days?
A day where one bad moment starts an unrelenting chain reaction of suck until you just want to head to the top of a clock-tower for some much needed stress relief?
Imagine the Groundhog Day version of your worst day ever - replayed over and over again. That is the Hell in Iain Rob Wright's eighth installment of his A-Z OF HORROR series, and that is how Barbara is starting to feel.
But, things are about to get much, much worse.

I have come to expect the unexpected with his work. The ending was not at all what I thought it would be. Leaves u wanting more.
