Kate Mulvaney: eccentric, miserly and stinking rich.
Although she is disliked by all her famous Hollywood relatives, it is her money that bankrolls them.
So why was she murdered by one while travelling through France?
Dade Cooley, Kate’s 60-year-old San Francisco lawyer, arrives on the scene to put his amateur detective skills to use.
With the help of his astute wife Ellen, he discovers the motive is linked to a ruby worth a cool ten million dollars.
Seven suspects for the murder emerge, from Kate’s sister Maggie, a movie star desperate for a role, to her husband George, the sole heir to her wealth.
As Dade gets closer to the truth two more brutal deaths occur within the family.
He must act quickly before there is more bloodshed!
The blurb got my attention so I requested to review this from Net Galley from Endeavour Press
It was a good mystery. We found out whodunnit in the end.
It wasn't edge of your seat mystery it was like watching one of those afternoon crime dramas on TV that slowly unfold. Adverts in between you could get up and go comfortably to make a cup of tea without fear of missing anything.
This book was in the great Agatha Christie style. Lots of possibilities and motives and lies and half truths. Dade Cooley must sort thru it all while in France to figure out who killed his client, Kate. Double crossings and egos are thrown into the mix. This was an older book that I picked up at a garage sale and was the best 25 cents I've spent in a long time.
This was part of a bundle I purchased called THE COMPLETE DADE COOLEY SERIES BOOKS 1-3.
What I've discovered about this author he likes to have many villains to choose from. There were so many twists of whodunit villains, that I didn't care. He takes you down a rabbit hole who the murderer is, to change it to someone else. Pacing was slow at times and I'm not all that into the H.
I read the first book in this series, and he was a criminal lawyer and left that profession and went to become a detective or PI. Why the change wasn't explained.
Lord's name used in vain many times and crude words. Some editing issues but I could figure what it was supposed to be.
Cheating off page by secondary characters, 3 murders to figure out, no cliffhanger and we know who the murderer is - finally! (ljb)
Nobody Cared For Kate by Gene Thompson is a mystery and thriller read. Kate Mulvaney: eccentric, miserly and stinking rich. Little slow in places but I managed to read it. 4*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.
Dade Cooley (pronounced "Dead" if you happen to have a French accent) is an attorney in San Francisco who is called to help out a client in France. But before he can get there she is murdered by someone near and dear to her. Asked merely to help translate and give background information on the potential suspects, Dade turns into a cross between Christie's Hercule Poirot and Tommy Beresford (with Dade's wife Ellen stepping in as Tuppence). The action is slow moving and methodical but once in awhile goes off on a tangent. Overall an enjoyable book unless you need rapid paced surprises and shocking twists. If you enjoy Agatha Christie, then you will like Nobody Cared For Kate.
A preview copy of this book was provided by NetGalley in exchange for an objective review.
Enjoyable read. Suspects abound. In the end it was a surprise to find out who the murderer was. Not even someone I suspected. Little bit of a French history lesson. Makes me want to dust off my passport and head to France and follow the same path as the book.
The writer kept me guessing almost to the end...which means this was a good mystery novel. Reminded me of Agatha Christie. I would definitely recommend reading if you enjoy suspense.
I liked the book but disliked the majority of the characters. That tells me that they were well written!! At times I wanted the pace to speed up but that would have been counter to the story itself.
