Saggio preciso e ricco di quel "viddano" che da Corleone ha portato il terrore e la distruzione in tutta la Sicilia, allungando i tentacoli in tutta Italia.
Una bestia con le sembianze di un contadino diventato il capo dei capi della Mafia siciliana.
Crudo, ingiusto e triste come la realtà dei fatti.

Ho voluto leggere questo libro dopo aver rivisto la serie tv tratta.
Gli autori hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro di studio e ricerca. Alcuni eventi sono dati per scontati ma per ovvie ragioni di centralità dell’argomento.
Approfondire la vita criminale di Totò Riina dall’origine fino al periodo più recente è stato un bellissimo percorso che oltre alla vita di uno dei più grandi e temuti criminali dell storia italiana racconta e svela anche dinamiche politiche e sociali che hanno caratterizzano (e chissà se caratterizzano ancora) il nostro paese.
Una storia da conoscere.

Contadini si nasce... ma non si muore

L'escalation pubblica di un uomo nato contadino ma dall'animo criminale, Salvatore Riina, corleonese classe 1930, uno stratega che per sopperire alla mancanza d'intelligenza ha usato l'astuzia, spesso virata alla brutalità, per ottenere ciò che voleva: il Potere su tutto e tutti, spazzando via tutto e tutti.

Ci è riuscito.

Non ha fatto tutto da solo, ha saputo usare le persone giuste e i metodi giusti - specialmente quelli a danno di altri - per seguire il suo Sogno, incurante anche di quell'onore tanto caro a Cosa Nostra.
Meglio non avere certi Sogni.

D'avanzo e Bolzoni, che da giornalisti la Sicilia la conoscono, narrano questa fame di Potere con l'incedere del romanzo-inchiesta, riuscendo nell'intento di intrattenere e soprattutto di informare.

A differenza di quelli che ha eliminato o fatto eliminare, Riina ha vissuto 87 anni, di cui 24 anni di latitanza e altrettanti di prigione.
Quest'uomo non si è goduto la vita, probabilmente non sapeva neanche di poterlo fare, preferiva toglierla agli altri.
Quest'uomo d'onore(?) si è goduto solo il Potere.

Meticulously researched. The amount of detail is incredible. I have no doubt that the original would have been a coherent and compelling read. However, I think that some of this coherency and flow may have been lost when translated into English.

L'intento di romanzare questa completa visione della mafia italiana degli ultimi decenni va a farsi benedire con l'utilizzo di almeno un centinaio di "personaggi" più o meno ricorrenti. Avrei incentrato quanto più possibile la narrazione su Riina e collaboratori più stretti.

The book tells the very interesting story of the rise of a Sicilian mafioso who ruled by terrorizing anyone who was against him, including the Italian state

The book has quite a few issues though -
1. the translation is terrible, frequently having even basic issues like incomplete sentences. I often lost track of what a particular paragraph was referring to due to some unclear sentence structuring
2. the book misses some key portions of the story, for example it doesn't seem to mention a terrorist train bombing orchestrated by Riina

Overall though it's a fascinating story, I wouldn't really recommend anyone to read this particular translation in English

Una fotografia chirurgica - con alla base un impressionante lavoro di raccolta delle fonti - del contadino che ha saputo trasformarsi da semplice viddànu a re, cambiando per sempre il volto della mafia siciliana.
Un lungo viaggio da “Cosa Nostra” a “Cosa Sua”, con un finale che non crea false illusioni: la fine di Totò Riina non corrisponde alla fine del sistema degli uomini d’onore in Sicilia. La strada è ancora lunga e la collusione Stato-Mafia rimane una realtà ancora oggi.

Good book throughly enjoyable well researched and interesting,..but it seems it was translated from Google...many sentences take several readings to make sense..no fault of the authors though. As an aside i could never work out why Riina let The Tractor live,..now i know they were life long friends.
