I Faced the Wind “An insightful look into our pioneer past.” —T.C.Christensen, producer/director of Seventeen Miracles, Ephriam’s Rescue, and Emma My Story. Caroline defies her mother and follows her heart to marry Mormon frontiersman, Mosiah Behunin. “You’ll be raising your children in some lonesome valley where white folk never go.” Ma predicts sourly. But Caroline shrugs off her mother’s bitter words—sure that the ruggedly handsome man who has stolen her heart wants the same things she does. However, Brigham Young learns that Mosiah—who settled Zion Canyon with his parents—is friendly with the Indian people and speaks their language. Mosiah is called to take his young family and live among the Indians to defray the Indian uprisings that threaten the budding settlements. Caroline is terrified, but, at length, follows her husband to live in an Indian wikiup. The years that follow will be fraught with almost insurmountable challenges. Mosiah’s life is constantly at risk, as is her own and sometimes her children’s. Can Charoline find purpose and joy as she steps forward with her face to the wind?
A fantastic book by the great-great granddaughter of the 'heroine' in this book, Caroline Behunin. While it is historical fiction, Newbold is careful to explain what is taken from actual journals and other historical records, and what she fictionalized to fill in the story.
Mormons in Utah tried to convert the Native Americans in the late 1800's. But unfortunately for both the settlers and the Indians, when it came time for revenge, one settler looked just like the other and one Indian was the same as another.
Having read several books by and about Mormons, I had mixed feelings, but I found this book to be exciting and inspirational. I give Newbold a lot of credit for her research into her family, and her excellent writing skills. I would read her other books because I liked her smooth style.
This is an amazing book, only better because the author is writing about her family. If you like history you will enjoy reading this book. It's like stepping back in time. You really get connected with the characters in this story. I enjoyed reading this book very much. Did not want to but it down. I won my book from Goodreads Giveaways.
It’s one to feel the breeze in your face. It’s another to face the wind that caresses one moment and lashes out with whips in the next. I Faced the Wind is no book for the faint hearted. There is an abundance of love, opposition and gruesome murders; there are the universal threads of truth and faith binding together the story of Caroline Hill through the eyes of her great granddaughter.
The story is through the words of Caroline, but there’s a compassionate perspective shown to every character. I Faced The Wind – A Frontier Saga runs the cinema reel of the frontier times through the pages of the book. There’s a constant tussle for survival from the very start. But the freedom of thought and action strikes like a thunderbolt throughout the book. Read more at https://thisshortstory.wordpress.com/...
Loved this book! I especially enjoyed the chapter notes after each chapter saying what is true accounts and what the author added. What a remarkable family! I find strength in pioneer ancestors and all they endured with faith and hard work
Amazing true stories, and even better-I found out Caroline is my ancestor. I thought the author did a good job recreating the personalities of the characters.
