I honestly don't even know where to start, kind of like this book.
Unfortunately, this easily could've been a novella and cut from 275 pages down to about 125. The biggest issue is all the deadwood. The dual POVs constantly overlap, but instead of adding new perspectives, they just repeat the same scenes and thoughts. I found myself skipping paragraphs because I'd already read the exact moment from the other character's POV.

The FMC is immature, not memorable, stubborn, and spends most of the book stuck in her own head. She talks nonstop about avenging her family after they're killed by a dragon, but never really does anything to move toward that goal. Instead, it's page after page of self-doubt, complaining, and going back and forth between "I'm powerless" and "I'm going to get revenge." She doesn't grow much by the end, either.
The MMC wasn't any better. The author clearly wanted him to be irresistible, but he just fell flat for me. He went back and forth desiring the FMC, but it was all stiff. Many of his chapters are spent arguing with his dragon, which felt very Fourth Wing-inspired without bringing anything fresh to the story. The dragons lines didn’t bring anything of importance, so he was underwhelming.
My biggest problem is that... nothing. really. happens. The opening is strong: her family is murdered, her village is destroyed, and it feels like we're setting up an epic revenge story. Instead, she becomes a maid at Dragonspear Academy, and that's where we stay. The plot never seems to leave the school, and it never builds into the story it promises.
The pacing is painfully, let me repeat, painfully, slow. Entire chapters are devoted to cleaning, internal monologues, or drawn-out fights that could've been half the length. Then you get the same scene all over again from the other POV. It felt like the author confused page count with plot progression.
It took me almost two weeks to finish this, when I usually finish a book in a couple of days. I kept waiting for it to go somewhere, and it never really did.

I went into *Wings of Destruction* fully expecting a carbon copy of *Fourth Wing*. Dragon riders, a prestigious academy, the usual beats — and I was absolutely, completely wrong.
This book is its own thing entirely.
Story:
The story follows dual POVs: Morgan, youngest daughter of Illonia Whyte, leader of Fallkirk — a village of unicorn-riding warriors — and Kieran, son of the general who destroys everything Morgan has ever loved.
Morgan has just been accepted to the prestigious Dragonspear Academy when Fallkirk is attacked and razed on the king's orders. Her family is killed. She survives only because her mother sent her ahead with the elderly and children. Kieran father uses him as a weapon during the attack and after, sends him out to capture any survivors. Kieran captures Morgan and instead of killing her as his cousin suggests Kieran choses a more painful type of torture.
Instead of arriving at Dragonspear as a student, Morgan arrives in chains as an indentured servant, scrubbing floors in the same halls she was meant to walk as a scholar.
Morgan struggles with her situation and Kieran, who is also a student at Dragonspear, is dealing with his own plots of revenge.
My thoughts:
I had to stop reading after chapter four and debrief with my best friend. I was that mad. That upset. That devastated for Morgan. The writing earns those emotions — it doesn't manufacture them.
What sets this book apart is how real Morgan's grief and fury feel. There's no neat healing arc, no love interest who kisses the pain away. She is *raw*. She is *hurting*. And Fenley Black refuses to sand that down. Kieran falls first, and hard, but Morgan's hatred of him — of his father, of the king — is completely valid and fully honoured by the narrative. This is a genuine enemies-to-lovers, not the watered-down version where they secretly like each other from page one.
Kieran is equally well-drawn. His trauma runs deep, his walls are thick, and there were moments I wanted to shake him because some of the tension between them could have been avoided if he weren't so guarded — but then again, he *has* to be, given everything, so I can't even be mad about it.
The world-building is rich and immersive without being overwhelming. It pulled me in and kept me there. The pacing does drag in a few spots, but they passed quickly. I also love that the humans dont have magic and while the creatures (dragons, unicorns, hydras etc) are a big part of the story, they feel naturally incorporated. It wasnt like other dragon rider books where the main "selling point" is the dragons.
This book made me cry, gasp, and giggle — sometimes within the same chapter. I wish I could go back and read it for the first time again.
My only real complaint is that book two isnt out yet, because I am *ready*.

I went into Wings of Destruction expecting the usual dragon-academy romantasy vibes, but I actually found myself enjoying the way Fenley Black put her own spin on the trope. The combination of dragons, unicorns, political conflict, revenge, and an academy setting gave the story plenty to keep me interested.
Morgan was definitely a character I had complicated feelings about. She has every reason to be angry after everything that happens to her, and her grief and determination to get revenge are a huge part of her character. At times, though, her anger and internal struggles felt a little repetitive. I appreciated that the story didn't expect her to simply get over her trauma because of a potential romance.
Kieran was probably the character I found the most intriguing. There is a lot more going on beneath the surface with him, and I liked the morally gray aspects of his character. The dual POV also worked well for showing just how different their motivations are, even when they are unknowingly working toward some of the same goals.
The enemies-to-lovers aspect is definitely a **slow burn**. These two have some very legitimate reasons to hate each other, so I appreciated that the romance wasn't rushed or magically making all of their problems disappear. There is plenty of tension, but it feels like this relationship is being set up to develop over the course of the series rather than being wrapped up in one book.
The world itself was one of my favorite parts. I liked that dragons aren't the only mythical creatures involved, and the inclusion of unicorns, hydras, basilisks, and other creatures made me curious about what we'll get to see as the series continues.
There were definitely some pacing issues for me, particularly in the middle where the story felt like it slowed down and some of the internal dialogue became repetitive. That said, there was enough intrigue, tension, and unanswered questions to keep me interested in where the story is going.
And that ending definitely feels like a "well, now I need book two” situation. 😂

I loved the dual POV because getting inside both Morgan’s and Kieran’s heads made the whole situation so much messier in the best way. Morgan is carrying so much grief and anger and honestly, I understood why she had about zero patience for Kieran. She is stubborn, fiery and definitely not interested in forgiving anyone just because they happen to be attractive. Respect and Kieran, the brooding, morally questionable, emotionally constipated energy was STRONG. But underneath all those walls, I really liked getting to see what was actually going on with him. His relationship with Mozi also gave me some much needed moments of humor because apparently even dragons have opinions and no problem making them known.
The academy setting, dragons, unicorns, political tension and all the messy history between the characters gave this a lot more going on than just “hot people at a magical school.” And while there are definitely some familiar romantasy ingredients here, it has its own identity. The romance is slow. Like… bring snacks. But I actually think the pacing works for these two because Morgan has some VERY valid reasons not to trust Kieran and watching that wall slowly start to crack is part of the fun.
I will say there were moments where the pacing dragged for me and Morgan’s constant anger occasionally had me thinking “Girl, I KNOW, but please breathe for five seconds.” I understood where she was coming from, but some of those internal spirals started feeling repetitive. Still, the emotional side of this book worked for me. There’s grief, betrayal, revenge, complicated loyalties and enough tension to keep me suspicious of basically everyone. I also appreciated that the romance doesn’t magically erase Morgan’s pain or make everything suddenly okay.

WINGS OF DESTRUCTION is the first book in the Dragonspear Academy series. It starts off strong, with a village being wiped out by the king's army.
Morgan, the daughter of the village leader, watches as the unicorns and their riders, including her mother and sister, are turned to ash. Although she has been hiding with others from the village, they are found. The others are killed, and Morgan is sent to Dragonspear Academy as a servant.
Kieran is the general's son who doesn't want to complete his orders, but understands that he must. He and his dragon, Mozi, fight the unicorns first, before his father tells them to clear out the area and lays waste. As the story progresses, you find out that Kieran is trying to stage a rebellion against his father, just the same as the village was, but in a different manner.
There were parts to this that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is slow-burn to the nth degree, and to be fair, not a lot actually happens to move the story along once they're at the academy. I mostly liked Kieran's character, although I found Morgan's quite hard to like. I understand her raw grief, but there were too many self-pitying monologues for my liking. She was incredibly antagonistic, right to the last page. I'm guessing this book was mostly putting the players on the board, and I remain hopeful for more action in the upcoming books.
All in all, this was an enjoyable read that I can recommend, and I look forward to continuing with the series in the future. 3.5 very good stars, rounded up where necessary.

I expected forth wing vibes to start but as red through the book I realised I was totally wrong. This book has its own unique individual story that is well written and has its own surprises along the way.
Is the dual POV : Morgan is the youngest daughter of Illonia Whyte, the general of the unicorn hurd in falkirk. Morgan was accepted into DragonSpear Academy where she hopes to find a mount of her own. Unfortunately her plans don't go to plan and she has to fight to survive in a new place while dealing with grief, loss and anger. Morgan tends to be stubborn and have a hot temper mainly towards the particular blonde. She also has a good sense of humour and has a good determination to overcome challenges.
Kieran is the son of the general Roman Ryson. A particular nasty man with the taste for vengeance and power. Kieran does not want to follow the path his father has set for him. Kieran is determined to overthrow the corrupt King. He has a lot of trauma and back history that he has to overcome. His mount mozi is a grumpy dragon who helps keep Kieran on track, usually at Karen's expense.
The story has a slow burn romance with a great amount of humour and backstory throughout the novel.
I found this book incredibly hard to put down, The story holds you captive right to the end. It has an incredible emotional rollercoaster to endure from laughing to crying and everything in between.

The story is told through dual POVs between Morgan and Kiernan. Morgan is probably one of the least likable main characters I have read about. She has some serious attitude problems, but it kind of works for the situation she finds herself in.
This is a slow-moving story that focuses on building up to what is coming next. If you are looking for a fast-paced story with battle after battle, then this probably isn’t for you. However, if you want a book that allows you to slowly become immersed in its world, then this may be exactly what you are looking for.

I wanted to really like this story. I felt like it had the potential to be great, but there were just so many hindrances.
Morgan's village is under attack. General Ryson, with his army of dragons, wipes out her home, killing her mother, the leader of their people. She is captured and sent to Dragonspire Academy as a servant.
First, a map would help. There are battles going on in this world, and a map would definitely help the reader in understanding.
Second, the main characters. Morgan, the FMC, is annoying, impulsive, and very antagonistic. There's very little in the story done to endear her to the reader - no friends, no helping anyone, etc. She has a lot of repetitive internal monologue that involves a lot of whining and complaining.
However, Kieran, MMC, who is a secret rebellion leader, is willing to risk everything for her?! Like even his dragon tells him that it's a stupid idea.
But by the end of this book, I found myself asking what really happened? Most of the action happened at the beginning, and very little got accomplished after that.

I received an Advance Review Copy of this book, and I am completely obsessed. Fenley Black has crafted a dark, breathtaking fantasy world that grabbed me from page one and refused to let go.The forced proximity and enemies-to-lovers dynamics in this book are top-tier. The tension between the ruthless general and the heroine is thick enough to cut with a knife. I loved how unapologetically morally gray the characters are—they make frustrating, human choices that make the stakes feel incredibly high. The dragon lore is beautifully woven into the plot, adding a savage, epic scale to the intimate character conflicts.The only reason this isn't a full 5 stars is that the pacing slowed down slightly in the middle third of the book, but the explosive, heart-wrenching finale more than made up for it. I am still reeling from that ending!If you love brutal fantasy worlds, monstrous dragons, and romance born from hatred, you need to pre-order this immediately. I cannot wait for book two!.

Okay, I seriously need the next book after this one because I am NOT ready to be done with this story. This was easily one of the best books I've read in months.
I loved the whole dragonspear academy concept, but what really pulled me in was Morgan. She's angry, stubborn, determined, and carrying so much grief and hatred after everything was taken from her. Watching her be forced into the very place connected to the people who destroyed her home made for such a tense story.
And Kieran.the dynamic between him and Morgan had me wanting to see where things were going, especially with all the distrust, secrets, and complicated feelings between them. Their relationship feels like it's only just getting started, which makes me even more impatient for the sequel.
There were dragons, unicorns, battles, revenge, enemies, secrets, and plenty of tension. I honestly flew through this one and by the end I was already thinking can I read book 2.

I literally read this in 2 sittings. Who needs sleep? Not me!
Loved the dual POV, the fact that its actual enemies to lovers and getting to see the hatred duelling with reluctant attraction. Both main characters are beautifully written, both have flaws and personalities rather than being cookie cutter inserts. Theres moments where I wanted to shake Morgan until her teeth rattled, and moments where my heart shattered for her. The world building is meticulous, layering information and intrigue and setting up beautifully for the next book. I can’t wait to see what happens next!.

I thought this started out really strong with Morgan and her village. Once she makes it to DragonSpear as a maid instead of a student, things slow down a bit. I still enjoyed the story and read it pretty fast. The FMC did get on my nerves a bit, she wouldn't listen to anyone and just constantly made things worse for herself usually on purpose. Kieran, the MMC, was really into keeping Morgan alive and at the school. He seems to trust her, even though he has no reason for that and she doesn't give him any either. Would definitely read book 2 and hope for some character development for Morgan. Hopefully Astrid will talk some sense into her.

This was such a great start to a new series! The beginning was so fast-paced and full of action it sucked me right in. As the story progresses, we follow Morgan and how she handles the cards she was dealt and the consequences of her own choices.
This has all the makings of a good slow burn with enemies to lovers. I did find some of Morgan's self-pity a bit frustrating the longer it lasted; Astrid is the real MVP.
I am very much looking forward to book 2 to see how she progresses both personally and with her relationships.

I read this book early thanks to the author and Booksprout. I give it a 3.5 star rating. Because the story has potential and made me curious enough to read book 2 in this series. The story is about a woman who lost everything to a Prick of a man who want's to rule the Kingdom whatever the cost. When her village and her people including her mother and sister got burned to the ground done by the general. She seeks revenge. It happens that she was spared by his son. She is forced to become a made and unknowing that she and the son of the general have the same goal. The book was sometimes very slow and repeating. But if you like dragonriders and a Academy setting this is a good book to read.

Lots going for this book and plenty of potential going forward for the continuation. Very Fourth Wing vibes and deja vu. Not a bad thing and there were differences that kept it interesting. Only criticism would be it's slow paced in parts and a very slow burn 🔥 as in....we'll have to wait for book two for more than a simmer. This book is over 500 pages and probably could have been a lot shorter as nothing much happened, and the ending was more like the start of the series. Hopefully the FMC will stop circling around her grief and doubts and become the warrior she sees herself as, in the next book. Given 4 🌟 as it deserves more than a 3 as it did hold my interest which isn't easy to do

I absolutely loved this book! The dual first-person POV (FMC & MMC) made the story so immersive, and the mutual interest between two characters who are truly enemies had me completely hooked.
The world-building was fantastic, filled with dragons, unicorns, magic and so much more. It feels like we've only scratched the surface and from the end I am excited to see the rest of the series!

The beginning hooked me: unicorn riders are called to fight basilisks, hydras, and dragons. Morgan is the FMC and she goes around to collect everyone who isn’t fighting and get them to safety. Kieran is the MMC who is a dragon rider and the General’s bastard son. This book had promise, but it became repetitive with the dual POV saying the same things from each view. Lots of back and forth on feelings/revenge thoughts, but it doesn’t go anywhere. Very slow and could have been a shorter book. Most was fluff that wasn’t needed.

Took me a while to start reading this book but when I did the story is straight in with a bang. Its got everything you want in a fantasy, dragons, unicorns and mythical monsters galore.
I did find the main female character very pig headed but there were reasons for this and she was her own worst enemy at times.
There are some great side characters the headmistress,Astrid and Milkin and I hope they feature in the rest of the series.
I would have liked more spice but all in all it is a good start to a new fantasy series and I cannot wait for the next ones.

However I did spot quite a few spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes - there was no option to mark these for the author. If you can get past this then it's definitely worth a read.

I'd say 2 1/2 star since I'm bouncing between two and three.
I couldn't get into it. It's not enemies to lovers, more like one side hate to lovers. It felt very similar to others like this. The whole oh look he's killing my family and friends but he's cute, while Morgan is supposed to be watching the survivors was face palm.
I wanted to love this book, I really did. But it felt lacking, not alot of substance for me.

I really like the premise of this book and its characters. They are well written and make you feel with them and desire to know the rest of their secrets and their stories. With that said the vast majority of this book spends way too much time drawing out unimportant scenes and the plot line stalls far too often for repetitive and unnecessary inner monologue. With that said you are given enough intrigue that you will be signing up for book two immediately.

Not many books make me cry. This one had such in depth feelings portrayed from the FMC that I cried. Her struggle throughout the whole book was tough but I was glad to see a bright spot towards the end. There is lots of action. I love the behind the scenes work being done by a few characters. I love the hate and yearning between the MMC and FMC. I can’t wait for the next book!.

This was a good story and very well written but that’s about it. I enjoyed it but didn’t loved it, but that’s on me. I think I’m getting “away” from fantasy the older I become.
But the book was good and the storytelling was very beautiful and I’ve read some of the parts out loud to my daughter, she is 13 and starts to enjoy this type of books and she really liked the parts she got to hear.

This book drops your right in the middle of war as soon as you start it, slowing down tremendously after that, with no more action to follow.
My heart was breaking before the end of the chapter 3.
The plot is promising and Morgan goes through hell before ending where she is supposed to be, but this is just the start of her story and there is still tons to come in future books

I was happily surprised with the narrative. This could have easily gone through the easy FW route. But no! We have a powerful, yet tantrum-prone, FMC, a cool and successful, yet ambivalent and self-doubting, MMC, and this was truly refreshing.
And there's dragons! What's not to love?

I loved it and I need book 2 now! I was sucked in from the very start. The story is original and you really feel for the fmc and mmc. There are different kinds of creatures to bond with. Not only dragons but also basilisks, hydra's and unicorns. This book focusses on how Morgan looses everything and how she tries to keep standing in an hostile environment. You also get the sexy mmc who needs to hide his big heart from everyone. This first book is a drama with seksual tension and I'm hoping for more action in the second book. At the end of the book things are starting to look up and i really need to find out what happens next!
