Vengeance is coming. Monterey Bay, California, has barely survived a brutal attack from the evil invasion forces of Omega, and Cassidy Hart is exhausted. She has lost a friend and gained a new enemy. The militias seem to be weakening, and Omega seems to be getting stronger.
In an effort to recruit more troops, Cassidy travels to the desolation of the high mountains to find the mysterious troops of Sky City, and to eliminate a threat that has long been growing just out of the militia's reach. Cassidy is not alone. Old enemies greet her, and the most dangerous person of all just might be the one she trusts the most. The fate of the free world is at stake. The end is coming. The militias - or Omega - will have its revenge.

Wow! There is SO much action in this book it was very hard to put down to sleep or be a parent! Cassidy has SO many emotions going on with the death of Sophia. It's hard to believe that she was once a very young and naive girl. Well, she's definitely not anymore being a Commander and a Senator and all at the age of 20!?
Lots of twist and turns and even more insight and realization of just how big Omega is and how long they might have been here. Sadly, I'm out of pages and must wait until Book 7 is out to see just what happens. But suffice it to say this will keep you on the edge of your seat if you have enjoyed this series as much as I have!
This series is so well written, you feel you are there with Cassidy Hart and Chris Young in the middle of death coming for you. An exciting 6th installment of one of my very favorite series from one of my favorite authors. Please don't make us wait too long to see what happens next. Summer Lane has me enthralled.
My favorite series in a very long time. I don't know that I can wait half a year for the next book. Cassidy is someone I aspire to be and can't wait to find out how intense things continue to get throughout the series.
The action continues as Cassidy and Chris fight to save what's left of their world. The author has created a great storyline with realistic characters.
Cassidy Hart and her crew are back at it, saving the world, one mission at a time. I love these books, the apocalypse Ms. Lane has created is so realistic that I can easily imagine it becoming our grim reality one day. I love Cassie, she has grown and evolved more than just about any other character I have ever deemed to adore, and at such a great pace too. Ms. Lane is always taking into account her actions and those of the people around her. Cassie lives in a world with real consequences where taking a life, or lots of lives as the case may be, has actually affected her in a real way. She may have once been a naïve little girl but she has become a solider, a leader, a force to be reckoned with in a cruel world. She has bent and changed and molded to her surroundings and the things she must do to survive, to fight. She has never once broken, but she has been hurt and that hurt has left its mark on her soul. I love Chris. I have always loved Chris. First and foremost because he makes me swoon in so many ways! Second because he is just a consistent bad ass. While Cassie has made me fall in love with her through her evolution and growth, Chris keeps my heart simply by being his consistent ass kicking self. From the very beginning in State of Emergency he was the level headed, soldier with a plan, and he still plays that role extremely well. I love how the romance always takes a back seat to the action in these books without the story ever lacking heart or feeling. It's the exact opposite, these books are filled with feeling and emotion and swoon worthy moments but all in such a real way that you never forget that there is a war happening. More importantly the characters never forget there is a war happening, every moment of personal interactions feels stolen, feels real, like this is how it really would be. I never feel like the action gets put on hold so the characters can hook up with one another, but I also never feel like the characters need to take a break and get some loving. I love this series, it has become so much more to me than I ever thought it would be when I first picked up State of Emergency, I can't wait to start reading State of Destruction, and I just downloaded End of Day as well so lots of Ms. Lane's grim but exciting world awaits me.
Each of these books is getting darker as it progresses, I realise that it was dark to start with being that it's a post-apocalyptic world, but it started with a bit of a lighter feel to it, whereas now, with ‘Vengeance’ the story has taken a darker mood. It's a bit like the Harry Potter books, they started out light, but by number 7, it was for Mature Audiences only. And this I think, is exactly what Summer Lane is going for, the books are actually a direct link to Cassidy Hart. She started off as an easy going young girl, but by the time you get to ‘State of Vengeance’, she is not just the Commander who has been bloodied in war, but the Senator for the State, someone who has lost family, friends, and is now a killer. Whilst that might be in self-defence or the defence of her country, Cassidy herself is starting to question her motives, and thus the title of this book, and the subtle (or not so subtle in some parts) move to the dark side. This is perhaps the best of the series, and not because it has the best action scenes or heroes are made or anything else, it's because of the in-depth look at the character of Cassidy Hart. This book looks into her and tries to see what she is becoming as a result of all that she has been through, all that she has lost, all that she has endured, and the answer is not what Cassidy expects. It is not what other characters expect either. This was a great read, riveting, so very easy to read, Summer’s work flows so well that the words just leap of the page and it's a pleasure to read. This particular episode of the series finds Cassidy and her tried and tested group still suffering from the loss of Sophia and the betrayal so close to home. With the battle of Monteray just over, they are desperate for reinforcements and look for help. They find it in the form of a hidden fortress, but can it be trusted? Is Monteray safe? I don’t want to give away spoilers, but for those that love this series, this is one of the best books written by Summer Lane about Cassidy and her struggle through the Omega War. It is absolutely brilliant character writing, and I can’t wait to read the next.
State of Vengeance (or, Cassidy Hart's Descent into Madness) is a taut action thriller that chronicles how the tolls of war are finally overwhelming and swallowing up our heroine whole. She makes some gnarly choices and observations in this one, a product of her finally reaching the end of her rope despite the words of caution and compassion that Chris Young and others give her throughout. Lane dives into the emotional depths of Hart's heart, seeing a fragile, scarred, emotionally obliterated heroine who is no longer who she once was.
Omega are all a bunch of bastards, of course, but it is nice to finally see the series veer away from stock action/end-of-the-world tropes that use enemies as Russians, Chines, Germans and Middle eastern folks almost across the board. The threat really, truly comes from within this time around, and finally gives Omega a more dastardly sensibility because it s truly global in its scope, and it leads to an unnerving reveal at the end that will make your blood run cold.
Hart's voice continues to be more clipped as the series progresses, something which Lane thankfully augments from time to time with some well-needed visuals. Though I suspect if her characters continue shrugging and rolling their eyes as often as they do, they're going to be armless and blind before too long. :) And the same goes for the number of times Hart references the phrase, "This is war," or some variation thereof. The world has ended. It's at war. We get it. There's no need to remind us seemingly every ten pages or so. :) It's almost a drinking game by this point, so here's hoping an editor can help dissuade her from using these crutch phrases and actions in the future, especially since she has proven over the course of this series that she is capable of more than this.
Dont get me wrong. I love this series. The characters are freakin awesome. But seriously.. What the hell is up with Cassidy?!? She was so lame in this.. i wanted to pull her hair! What the heck! She better straighten her shit out by the next book.. cause daaaamn.. Buzzkill much?
I must say that I am impressed with how this story is still keeping my interest after 6 books! This was a great installment in the series. Onto book #7.
