While recent polls show a majority of Americans believe the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) is a greater threat than both Iran and North Korea far fewer understand the nature and origin of this danger in the Middle East. ISIS is no surprise event but an inevitable by-product of failed states, overwhelming oppression and massive corruption in the region, as well as dysfunctional policy and interference from the international community – including the United States. A greater understanding of the origins and nature of ISIS will empower a greater awareness of what the future holds. Most certainly understanding will provide greater insight for today’s leaders and decision makers as they determine how to respond and react in the new age of ISIS.
