The Arrest

Rate this book
The Arrest was a finalist in several literary fiction contests and was nominated for a Pushcart Publisher’s Prize. The author, Jane Piirto, is an award-winning novelist, poet, and scholar.
The Arrest is a quirky and exciting road novel whose main character, Maya Corbin, travels from Flint, Michigan to the Florida Keys; to Aspen, Colorado; to Minneapolis, Minnesota; to eastern South Dakota; to Duluth, Minnesota; to the Marquette, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan; and back to Florida.
The Arrest takes place in the 1980s, at the time when two-career families began to increase. With the new sexual freedom as a result of the existence of the birth control pill, marriages broke up and the divorce rate soared. Men were getting vasectomies. However, accidental pregnancies occurred no matter what the precautions.
There were no pregnancy tests in the drugstore; rabbits had to die. Pregnant women drank, smoked, and even respectable people took drugs casually.
Religious right moguls created pyramid schemes.
Rural women sang barbershop in Sweet Adelines.
The Arrest is a suspenseful romp through America with betrayals, captures, geographies, and confusions. What will Maya do next?
Maya Corbin’s husband James serves as a kind of moral barometer, yet he committed the act that started the action. The book explores maternal instinct versus marital duty in the milieu of the 1980s. One of its main characters is a newborn baby.
The Arrest is a good read. “I was with her all the way,” said one reader.
