Something to Hide by D.B Donalds is an independently published contemporary romance. This is the first book in a planned trilogy.
I was provided a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
It has been thirteen years since Sophie left the world of television, stopped drinking, went back to school and found a descent job. She keeps her head down, works hard, stays away from social scenes that could cause her problems and tries to deal with all the demons of her past.
An encounter at a gas station of all places with a guy named Nicoli turns Sophie's life into plot television never could have dreamed up.
Nicoli is the son of a mob boss. He has removed himself from that life, but his father still has to control things in his life when can. Nicoli giving up his playboy lifestyle and dating a regular girl doesn't fit into his father's plans.
Sophie knows Nicoli's family situation, and to make matters more complicated Sophie's best friend works for the FBI.
After ten long years of putting men on a back burner, Sophie falls under Nicoli's spell. Once they start going out, they rarely come up for air... except when someone is trying to come between them, and well, there are quite a few people in seems that would like to see them go their separate ways.
It is my understanding that this is a first novel for this author. There are few things that experience will help to rectify, but overall this book was a good start.
The story is told in part by Sophie and in part by Nicoli using first person narrative. Nicoli is a real charmer and once he sets eyes on Sophie he doesn't let her go. Sophie doesn't have the confidence Nicoli does and really needs someone that will hang in there despite quite a few difficulties such as Nicoli's former girlfriend, his father, Sophie's best friend, and then ... well there is in all fairness a cliffhanger. Some people just absolutely hate cliffhangers. If there is going to be a long time between books, then yes, it sucks. But, you know you deal with this issue in TV shows that make you wait for two years before there are new episodes and the same with some movies. So, for me it's no big deal. We know going in that this is a trilogy. The next book has a very intriguing title of Something to Fear. So.... Stay tuned!!

Great first novel.
I must say I’m impressed by the first book written by DB Canavan. Something To Hide follows the lives of Nicoli and Sophie as they figure out the world around them.
Sophie Connor has had her share of problems. The last thing she expected was to fall for the son of the Russian mob. She has a past she needs to keep hidden in the past. But secrets don’t always stay hidden.
Nicoli Petrov is the son of the Russian mob boss. He has tried to be a legitimate businessman but the connections to his father are always there. Just like Sophie, he too has secrets he wants to keep buried in the past.
Something To Hide is full of suspense, family intrigue, and a steamy attraction that will heat up your Kindle. Looking forward to continuing Sophie and Nicoli’s journey in Something To Fear.

Sophie Conner has struggle to get herself to where she is now. She's been concentrating on keeping herself on a better path so that she can show the people in her life that she has truly changed from the person she used to be. Nicoli Pretrov is from a major crime family wanting nothing to do it he starts his own business from the ground up and is making it a success. Neither is looking for a relationship and seem to be happy with how their lives are or at least content. It all changes one day when Nicoli sees Sophie at a gas station.
Nicoli is used to getting what he wants and he really wants Sophie. After a chance meeting in a restaurant Nicoli begins a endless pursuit of her until Sophie agrees to go on a date with him. Sophie guards her heart tightly due to past traumas and doesn't want anything to do with Nicoli at first but he convince her that he won't hurt her that he wants a chance to prove it. He wants to keep her separate from anything to do with his family not because he is ashamed of her but because of how his family is towards anyone they disapprove of. When the inevitable happens and Sophie meets his family his father warns her away from Nicoli by threatening to expose her past.
Nicoli and Sophie have many obstacles they face and it seems whenever they overcome one another pops up. Everything goes well until Nicoli's father decides he is done waiting for Nicoli to leave Sophie and takes matters into his own hands. Even with the small trust Sophie and Nicoli have built between them it doesn't take much to put doubt into Nicoli's mind and things turn ugly.
This is the first book I've read by this author and it definitely won't be the last. I couldn't put this book down once it was finished I couldn't stop thinking about it. The very next day I bought the next installment because I had to know what happened next. This book with draw you in so deep everything else just falls away. I love Sophie and how far she came from everything she had to endure. She is by far one of the strongest characters I've read about this year and I don't think I'll be forgetting her anytime soon. Nicoli is a total alpha male when he is in it you have all of him but get on his bad side and heaven help you. He is younger than Sophie and it show by how he acts in some parts of this book. This author will be going on my must read list. I definitely recommend if you haven't read this series that you start. A 5 star read in my book.

Love DB Canavan books love that it holds my interest love the characters in the book I laughed , cried I would remend this book
