This is the COMPLETE collection of the award-winning Young Adult adventure series!
200 years ago, the Brothers Grimm unleashed their stories upon the world. With the stroke of a magic pen and a deal with a malevolent force of evil, they forever changed humanity's fate.
Now the characters of the Grimms' fairy tales walk among us. With every day that passes, they grow more evil. They are the Corrupted, and only a hero can stop them.
This is the story of Alice Goodenough, the last in a long line of heroes who have bravely given their lives to snuff out the evil force that does not belong in this planet. Her story begins during summer vacation, when she happens upon a magic pen and an invisible rabbit named Br'er who is tasked with teaching her the ways of the hero. With the help of the magic pen, Alice must vanquish the terrible creations of the Brothers Grimm, relying on her dreams to guide her to her next target. Cinderella. Fundevogel. A fisherman. An evil wizard. A trio of dwarves hellbent on controlling the world. But to become a great hero, Alice must give up her old life so that she may protect those she loves most. Otherwise, evil will find her.
And evil will kill her.

I have been reading this story, calling it a book is so beneath it, for 6 days....I can finish most books in a day, day and a half..but, because it was 12 stories in one, and drove me to other stories for reference, it took me more time...with that said, I absolutely could not put it down. I read on my phone so every minute not working, driving, or taking care of my home/kids, was devoted to this story.
While this is categorized as teen/young adult fiction, even the most seasoned reader can enjoy this tale. It's a very interesting twist on the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales that makes you not only recall the tales (and research the ones you don't)...but creates a desire to go back and read the tales to reacquaint yourself with the monsters of this story.
I rarely give reviews on books I've read, other than providing a star rating, so...for me to take the time to read this tale and write this review...that shows how much I absolutely loved this fairy tale story.
I received this book from Xpresso Reads in return for a fair and honest review.
I honestly don't know where to start with this book as there are so many good points. I guess a good place to start with what you actually get with this book. This book contains all 12 episodes of the series, as well as the bonus "Lost diaries" of previous heroes and all of the collected Grimm's Fairy Tales so it makes for a very long and satisfying read.
The best way I can describe this set of books is to tell you to imagine Buffy the Vampire Slayer but instead of the Scoobies and her Watcher, imagine a great big, talking, sometimes visible, white Rabbit called Briar to his friends, otherwise known as Br'er Rabbit.
The wit is fast and sharp and on pretty much every page. There is also exhaustion, pain, temptation and there is even time for usual teenage angst. There are no plot-holes and the story continues in a smooth flow, making your reading of it completely and thoroughly enjoyable. Be prepared though, if you're anything like me, you will cry! And not just once, either. Characters that you don't like to start with with insidiously get under your skin until you do like them and then, of course, you worry about their well-being. (Yes, I know it's a book but it's written that well that you do care!!)
These fairy tales stay true to the originals by the Brothers Grimm, they have not been disney-fied in any way. You could even say that they are 'grim' as they involve people being eaten, violence, self-mutilation. These are all things that actually happened in these stories before they were 'softened' for today's children.
If you want a change from Disney, if you like a butt-kicking, fast-witted but altogether relatable Hero, if you want the warmth that the friendship of the Hero's helper or if you just want to read about fairy tales, then I can definitely recommend this set of Chronicles. Seriously, I can't recommend it highly enough. Absolutely brilliant.
One word: AWESOME It's not just a retelling of the Brothers Grimm Fairy tales. The authors made it more than that. They created a universe revolving around their stories in a modern setting, filled with adventure and a whole lot of kick-butt action.
I really enjoyed this YA urban fantasy series (12 books total, I think—1,823 pgs in all). The main character is great. The premise, although in itself perhaps not unique, had some really clever elements I haven't come across before. The writing is not perfect. Sometimes there were some clunky sentences, repeated phrases, and I really really really didn't want to read "gawd" one more time... But all in all I'm glad I read it and I'll read more by Brosky.
What an interesting premise and engaging characters. I got a little bored trying to read the whole series in one go, but on the whole, each installment was thoroughly enjoyable!
I just loved fractured fairy tale books but finding one that are good is pretty hard.
The first story was so so, didn't really enjoy it but glad that I gave it a try. In the first book, the MC was typical YA protagonist, nothing really special about her. What I dislike was how MC keeps on talking about her "prefect" boyfriend. It was really annoying but I really liked the twist . I really hated the author of using "Gawd" all the time, there are times it was unnecessary and I am 100% sure no teenager swear with "gawd". Its just annoying.
After the first book, MC developed into a kick ass character and this transformation of character I really enjoy. The different representation of the fairy tale character in this story was fun to read. Overall I find the story was pretty interesting and it was an easy read.
A very unique telling of the Grimm's and the universe around them and their stories. A young girl working as a volunteer at the library stumbles upon a giant talking rabbit. She has been chosen to continue on a centuries old custom of fighting back the darkness that the Grimm brothers unleashed. Things believed to only be stories are now or have been coming to life. And it is not just limited to key heroes, heroines, or villians. All matter of things are loose and the only one that keep them all in check and continue to fight to put them all back is a young girl who just wants to enjoy the love see has finally found. Only, that in of itself is not what it seems and there is no avoiding what her destiny holds for her. She practices fencing so she has an advantage but the enemy are multitude and it will take all her cunning to stop what is coming. And a pen. The very pen that the Grimm's used to start all this so long ago.
I didn't mind the first book but then midway or so into the second one I just couldn't continue with it. Alice started to grate on my nerves (Gawd!). I didn't feel that her character grew or took the situation seriously in a believable way. Kudos to the authors for wanting to make her intelligent and a typical teenage, but I think they tried too hard to do this and it all felt stilted. Also the detail... oh the detail, every little move including going to the bathroom is documented and me being a "story junkie" I just wanted to get to the plot. I also haven't read all of the Grimm fairy tales so it was really hard for me to get everything straight, I guess I would like to at some point but it's so long and sometimes boring and flowery so I read a summary but it doesn't seem like that was enough.
Unfortunately this series had a lot of promise it just wasn't for me.
I enjoyed it only to the point it kept my mind busy and I wanted to see where the story ended up...Some of it is so choppy and some things NEVER get tied up at the end. I enjoyed the interesting take on Grimm's fairy tales and where the author takes them, but I felt it could have tied together better, closed off better. I did quite enjoy the descriptive writing during fight scenes. That was probably my favorite part, each battle draws you in like you can see the weapons move, hear the steel clang together, etc.
Book compilation decently written but for the near instant ending & the fact that the author seems to let a bit of Leftist viewpoints permeate throughout. As long as you don't let it brainwash you (mostly written for teens to young adults) then enjoy over 40hours of Alex's reading to you. Not sure about now but if I recall it was free or very inexpensive on Amazon last month.
One of my favorite series that I've read over and over again. Such great, lovable characters and I love the humor and adventures. Made me SO tense and emotional throughout the whole series. I just wish the series had ended a bit differently 😔. The series definitely took a turn dow the DARK road. It was really bittersweet with where all the characters ended up, but at least Alice ended up with the right guy in the end 🥰 in more of a realistic modern happily ever after.
Great concept but poor execution for me. This is definitely a YA book for younger readers despite some of the adult themes. The characters are immature and shallow and I couldn't get into it. Got about 6 chapters in and decided that I couldn't waste any more time. I would recommend the Splintered series by AG Howard over this one.
Corruption within fairy tales leads to a hero who has to defeat evil. With the help of Brer Rabbit and her friends Alice becomes that hero. A wonderful book, full of strange creatures and enthralling battles. Tales within tales lead to an epic battle and the loss of a trusted friend. I totally recommend this book.
This was a fantastic series to read. From start to finish, I loved the blend of fantasy and real life. The character development was spot on. Also, I love the twist that showed how good or bad the characters could be.
3.5 stars. What I liked about it was that it was over 1500 pages. 😀. Enough to keep me busy for about a week. Not strenuous to read, obviously Young adult and geared towards that readership but all in all, I really enjoyed it.
I LOVED this series. It's a fun take on the familiar (and not-so-familiar) Grimms Brothers' fairy tale characters with a relatable heroine that I enjoyed rooting for. If you're a fan of twisted fairy tales and/or strong female leads, you'll love this series too!
A fun adventure through a fantasy that brings to life all the characters of Grimm's Fairy Tales. No matter how good/sweet/etc the character was in Grimm's, they are now evil personified and it is the Hero's task to remove/destroy each and everyone who has now appeared in our world.
A great set of a nice YA books with a little bit less love stories (which is a good thing in my eyes). A VERY lovable characters (I really need a Briar in my life right now; or any really good friend that actually cares about me that much) and nice stories. Highly recommended!
This was one of those books that I always had in the background as a back up read when my other books were finished. I enjoyed the different look into the world of the Brothers Grimm, especially the hero twist. Glad I stuck with it and finished it!
I've read this book numerous times and it never fails to please. It is imaginative and compelling. I do not want to bore you with all the details or summarize all of Alice's adventures. I'll just tell you that the book is truly magical and leave it at that.
This omnibus edition of this YA series goes well beyond the stories compiled by the Brothers Grimm. There are references to Moby Dick, the Uncle Remus stories along with other fairy and folk tales.
I absolutely loved this book! I enjoyed all the characters except the sausage guy, lol. I loved the storyline also. It's an entertaining series of tales about friendship and heroism.
These books were quite enjoyable. I listen to the stories as I'm doing chores. I really enjoyed them even though I'm many years past being a young adult. I bet young adults would really enjoy reading these books.
Spoiler alert!!!! I was sad that seth dies. How could you kill him i get it but is not the happing ending i was expecting. Anyway read you may like it.
What an amazing journey. I was cheering for Alice all the way and shared her joys and her grief. The author made his characters come to life, again amazing.
