Quinn Sawyer didn't apply for a temporary job at the remote O'Connor Adventure Retreat all the way in Alaska because he wants a change of scenery. He loves his sunny Florida, and he's only heading north because he needs answers from Declan O'Connor, the man who dated Quinn's aunt six years ago.
One day, Declan was just gone, and it had been the beginning of hell for Quinn. Most of his family suddenly hated him and still blames him for Declan ending the relationship with Quinn's aunt, though nobody will tell Quinn why.
He deserves to know how it could've possibly been his fault, and he's not going to let the crush he harbored for Declan stand in the way.
After finally tracking down Declan, Quinn gets on a plane. Or death machine, as he prefers to call it. But in his quest to find out the truth, he discovers there's a lot more to the Land of the Midnight Sun than seeking answers.
I'm often stoically silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there's so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There's a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.
Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.
I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There's time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.
Starting reading this, I felt like I jumped to the middle of it! Apparently the MCs had a history, known each other from before, (an attraction that I wasn’t aware of from where/when or even how) and the author just threw it to my face! It was like to me their love came from nowhere! I’m a fan of this author but unfortunately, this was a miss, hope you enjoy it more than me though!
And I’m off to a flying start with my 2020 reading! Yay!
This one had everything I look for in a contemporary M/M romance. Besides being well-written, it also had a perfectly-paced romantic progression, which was exceedingly sexy and heartfelt; the Alaskan setting was beautiful, proving very tempting to this foreigner; the support cast were engaging and likeable; and there was just enough relationship angst to keep things interesting. All in all, this was a definite win!
When Quinn was a teenager growing up in Florida, his aunt was dating a man named Declan. As Quinn became an adult, he and Declan formed a friendship, always seeking out each other’s company at family gatherings and the like. But one day Declan upped and moved away, breaking up with Quinn’s aunt overnight and never uttering a peep of a proper goodbye to confused and heartbroken Quinn, who at that point had formed a bit of a crush on the slightly older, presumably straight man.
Six years later, Quinn is now in his mid-twenties and has been practically shunned from his extended family since around the time Declan left town. Unsure why his family treat him like an outsider and certain that Declan must have some of the answers he seeks, Quinn tracks Declan down, finding him living and working at his brother’s Alaskan wilderness retreat.
With a bit of subterfuge, getting a job he’s technically not qualified for, Quinn shows up in Alaska, quickly coming face-to-face with a very surprised and cautious Declan, who doesn’t quite know what to expect from the sudden (re)appearance of a guy he hasn’t seen in years.
Quinn and Declan have always gotten along well, and now that Quinn is older and more mature, the two quickly come to realise that the friendship they started so many years ago may hold the potential for so much more now they are on even footing. But before anything can truly happen between the two men, Declan has some confessions to make.
Declan holds a lot of guilt and shame surrounding the reasons why he left Florida all those years ago, but once he hears that Quinn has been treated poorly by his family, possibly because of Declan’s own past behaviour, he decides to risk Quinn’s judgement to tell him the truth – even if it costs him a romantic relationship with the one guy who could become his everything.
Aside from the initial set-up surrounding the reasons why Declan left Florida and why Quinn’s family turned on him, I enjoyed all other aspects of this story. With an age-gap of fifteen years, Quinn and Declan’s love story was an easy one to believe in. Their chemistry as friends and then as lovers was palpable – made all the more fun to read with Declan’s slightly kinky nature and Quinn’s excitement and willingness to consent to all of Declan’s sexual desires. It was hot; they were hot.
I thought the way Quinn and Declan navigated their relationship through all its roadblocks and complications was very mature. The whole long-distance and lives settled in separate, very different states thing was handled well, too, and I loved how well they communicated and compromised to make it work between them, at whatever cost. This kind of adult, true equals, give and take attitude to making a relationship work was probably the element I most appreciated about this story – one that’s so depressingly and annoyingly lacking in many of the romance books I encounter on the regular.
As I said above, I also loved the Alaskan setting. It was a very visceral reading experience for me. Cara Dee did a fantastic job capturing the breathtaking scenery and wilderness, as well as encapsulating the essence of the Alaskan people and the major life-impacting differences between their climate and culture compared to other parts of the world. It was especially fun to watch how Quinn slowly acclimatized to Alaska as the book went on, being so very different from his time in sunny Florida.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story – so much so, I can easily imagine myself re-reading it in the not too distant future.
Edited review: A conversation between 'Old me' and 'Present me'.
Old me:"*phew* that was HOT, and funny and also... Daddy kink... *wideeyed, blushing stare*"
Present me:"Daddy kink??? Oh, you poor, poor, naïve, idiot you!"
Old me:"But... But... Declan wants to take care of Quinn, and do nasty, dirty stuff to him, and Declan LOVES when Quinn is wideeyed and childishly enthusiastic."
Present me:"Yeah, but 'Daddy' is not mentioned even once, I think. Though Declan do like Quinn to be cute and innocent... And then to FUCKING RUIN him... But daddy kink?? Oh darlin'..."
This is STILL a fun story. And I have to say, I now have this dream of going to Alaska, even though I don't do well in the cold. Cara Dee created a fun cast, an interesting plot and a believable love story.
One of the reasons this is not a 5-star read, for me, is the thing with Lynn. It was a WEE bit weird and OTT with Quinn's idiotic family, luckily it didn't take up a lot of space in the story.
And then that some of the smut-scenes were skipped. I would have loved to see the 'daddy kink' -*my eyes still rolling at myself*- explored further, since Declan felt so BAD about what he wanted to do to Quinn, but we never actually got many of those scenes "lived out"... *still pouting* But yeah all in all I loved the setting, I loved the characters and I loved the humour.
I've really been getting into Cara Dee's novels recently, and I think she needs to write faster. Seriously, I'm running out of M//M novels of hers to read, and that is a travesty!
Quinn is a man who needs answers. Six years ago, someone he thought was his friend broke up with Quinn's aunt and disappeared without even saying goodbye. And now most of his family, who are super religious and hate the gay, won't even speak to him. Thank goodness his parents don't fall into that category. Still, Quinn wants...no, needs, to find out what happened and why his family hates him now. It took Quinn six years to track down Declan, and so Quinn is off to Alaska (from Florida!!!) to get himself some answers. It doesn't help, either, that he always secretly crushed on Declan.
When Declan ran away from Florida, he hated that he couldn't say goodbye to Quinn. But fear and shame sent him back home to Alaska where he has worked to not think about his time in Florida. He was just a touch surprised to find Quinn is the man that was hired as a winter handyman, so now it's time to pay the piper and hope that Quinn forgives him.
It didn't take Quinn and Declan too terribly long to figure out that they are each attracted to the other. Nope. And it didn't take them too long to get hot and heavy. They were so sweet together, I just couldn't help but love them. And once the big reveal of the reason Declan left without saying goodbye came out, I was totally with Quinn in directing his anger at said family and not at Declan. Quite a reasonable young man, Quinn is, when he isn't flying from Nome to the Retreat, anyway. Then he's just funny.
Northbound was such an enjoyable story and Quinn has been added to my list of favorite MC's. He's adorable and funny and actually managed to learn to love Alaska. I don't think I could do that, myself. I've had enough of winter. But I loved that Quinn took a chance. The Retreat sounds beautiful and rustic and I can certainly see the appeal.
I loved this story and I loved the Alaskan setting. Although I could never live up there, I believe it is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
At first I thought Quinn's decision to go to Alaska to find Declan and demand explanations was a bit over the top. As the story progressed I understood it better.
I don't think that Declan was as kinky as he claimed to be. He just liked to be with younger men and the age gap here is delicious. The sex was pretty awsome, the romance too and generally it was a great story.
This was good, but I need more. Declan claimed to be kinky, but I never saw it. Quinn claimed to be an aggressive top, but you couldn't prove it by me. I will read the next installment and hope it's more.
3.5/5 - Really nice, simple story. Declan and Quinn were so cute together too! I just wish the plot had been a bit fuller, and the story a tad more compelling. Nothing I really had an issue with in particular.
Did I start and finish this one the same day? Yes I did. Did I love it? Yes, I did.
Another one with the age gap theme that I am totally digging. This time we have Quinn, the 25 years old who relocated to Alaska under the pretense of working for Declan, the 43 year old Alaskan who in the past dated Quinn’s aunt (???) but left her for apparently no reason and ever since Quinn’s family hates him. I know. You must be thinking what? Yeah. So was I.
So Quinn moves to Alaska to find out why Declan left and why everybody blames him. HINT: they are both gay and attracted to each other. IKR?! What a shocker.
One thing I have to give to Cara, she totally made me want to visit Alaska and I hate cold weather. But she made it totally adventurous. Well, aside from that, it’s hot as fuck because did I say age gap? So yeah.
I’ve mentioned now in other two reviews that Cara’s books sometimes feel a bit rushed, not the books but the relationships. I feel like the guys jump into ILYs and stuff too fast. Maybe I’m just an angsty whore who loves to suffer...there is this possibility and these books are basically angst free.
DNF @ 82%. I'm not going to pan this, because I can see how it might work for some people. But not for me, and the nail in the coffin was this line of dialogue: "Daddy, I'm hungwy." Hungwy? Yes, a little child was shoehorned into the story at 70%. I don't read m/m romance in order to spend time with toddlers, and I wouldn't have even started this if I'd known one was going to be getting page space (not to mention the ridiculously lisping dialogue). This gets filed under "Not My Thing."
This is not a taboo trope I’ve read before. Your Aunt’s boyfriend 🤔🫣.
This was super hot and sweet. There’s a few problematic things but it was written awhile ago so I’ll forgive. Like using the term clean… instead of negative.
Quinn goes up to Alaska in search of Declan. He wants to know what caused him to disappear 6 years ago from his life. The background on that was strangely hot. Declan definitely had his reasons.
The chemistry was hot with these two. I really enjoyed their story and how they were able to solve the long distance issue. Loved the HEA. Now off to read Kyle’s book.
There was some kinkiness discussed in this book that wasn’t delivered and considering this is Cara, I was reeeeeally disappointed. But… this is older Cara so I’ll forgive her this time. This was still super sweet and thoroughly entertaining.
Yes, I liked it a lot and couldn't stop reading :) Ok, I could have done without the setup for the follow-up, don't like that, wasn't needed as I am already looking forward to reading that book, too.
The first 50% were highly enjoyable. Quinn's a very likable guy and I love his voice a lot.
Declan, hm, he is all right; not too fond of him though, that's perhaps why the second half was rather boring :( I was about ready to move on and leave them where they were at 50%. Happy and Together.
Declan claimed to be super kinky, like "I'm almost ashamed just how kinky I am", but, uh, I didn't see it. Their sexy-times didn't blow me away like I hoped they would.
Engaging romantic read with the Alaskan frontier and some baby kink thrown in for excellent measure.
Then we get to reuniting in front of the neighbors. Easily one of the dumbest scenes that I’ve read in a long, long time. Throwing shade at the neighbors. Stupid. How old are you?
I couldn’t wait to get through the last few pages. It’s like the timer went off.
I have no words to explain how excited I was to find out that Cara Dee has new MM book coming...After all,Aftermath by this author is my favourite M/M book ever, and I absolutely loved all her other MM titles...and that right there sets bar pretty high. So,has this book met my expectations? Well,I was worried there for a while, but in the end - yes,it did. Because, really,Alaska wilderness,May/December romance and dogs? I was sold by the page seven...
This book is part of The North Novels series, but the second book will be dealing with different couple. Just so you know...
Blurb pretty much tells you all you need to know regarding the storyline. It revolves around Declan and Quinn, their relationship and its progress to love, and how far they are willing to go for it...As is the case with all Cara Dee's characters,it's hard for me to write about characters, and what exactly I liked about them. Why? Because they seem so real to me...like if you asked me about some friend of mine and why I like her/him. I would be tongue-tied. Of these two,I liked Declan better, there was more substance to him in my opinion, but together - I loved them...
From the blurb, you would expect the main point of this book would be why Declan left six years ago so abruptly, and why Quinn was treated so badly by his own family after that. But,there was not much to it,and that was resolved easily.
What this book is really about is love, and places we are willing to go for it... After all, "Love could take you thousands of miles, but why make the journey if you didn’t enjoy the destination?"
So I definitely have a Alasca wilderness kink, I assume that! And I can’t even explain why, but it’s there!
This book, wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t top shelf either. This one suffer with the novella syndrome, to make this truly great, much more was needed and it huts the story.big time! We needed more Alasca shenanigans, more descriptions more characters development , more!
Also the third person narrative really confuse the hell out of me.. it took me 50% to finally get who I was reading and appreciate the story.
They were so adorable sexy it hurts! Absolutely adore the end, and Declan showing up like that 😍😍😍 they’re dirty talk and sex scenes were insanely hot. But Cara girl…. Stop with the fade to black and behind close doors stuff… it leaves us wanting…. Not cool!
3-3.5 stars. I love age gap in my m/m romance. A lot! And when it's not made into a huge issue, and have half of the plot focus on the subject and turn it into a complication?? YeS!!
I enjoyed this book. Loved the characters. And learning about Alaska (I knew nothing and it's full of info for an ignorant)... I just liked it a whole lot.
I don't know if it's good or bad, but, The "kink" thing was none existence in the story! I'm not a fan of it, so it didn't bother me all that much, but if you're looking for it, look elsewhere.
I liked the book. Although there are some hot sex scenes in there, it is more on the love side than the kink side. Declan does mention at one point that he likes kinky domination, but there are no such scenes in the book. So if it is what you are after : wrong pick.
But the love story is great, Cara Dee is good at describing how both Declan and Quinn evolve. Character development is great for such a rather short book.
Sweet story that was a quick and easy read. I found the backstory and Quinn just heading to Alaska at the beginning kind of unbelievable but everything else I enjoyed. Looking forward to the next in the series.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Loved Declan and Quinn and they were so good together. There may have been an age gap, but you really don't feel it much. All in all a sweet romance story. Looking forward to reading the next one.
