When 17 year old Liv Larson and her brother are sent to separate foster homes, she becomes content with her isolation and dedicates her every breath to getting him back. After months of solitude and anti-social behavior, Liv’s best friend Riley drags her to a Rooftop Party to view Icarus (the once in a lifetime solar flare) where Liv finds herself inexplicably drawn to Zander James, the mysterious boy with the crooked smile. For a few hours, Liv’s troubles finally feel a bit less overwhelming—that is until what should have been a small flare erupts into a massive solar storm forcing them all to seek shelter in the school’s basement. Cut off from the rest of the world and with no signs of rescue, fear and paranoia set in and battle lines are drawn, dividing their ranks. What is left the group must embark on a perilous journey to save one of their own and find their families…but, something sinister awaits them in the shadows and it’s undeniably connected to Liv.
Can Liv keep her promise to reunite with her brother? What are she and her friends willing to do to survive? Will their bravery and determination be enough to save them all from a rogue government, a terrifying virus, and the things that go bump in the night…Or was Icarus, indeed, The Killshot?
“Killshot is the action-packed, post-apocalyptic thrill ride you’ve been searching for. It’s gritty, violent, and full of enough gore and suspense to keep you on your toes. A heart-stopping journey into a dangerous new world that takes on dystopian without going zombie …Bursting with explosions, immense heat, and bloodshed, Killshot is a survivalist’s dream read.” – Jordan, YA Book Madness Blog
“Aria writes Brilliantly…The descriptions are fabulous and you feel every trauma that they suffer.” –Claire at Bare Naked Words
“Everything about this book is fantastic…The descriptions, the dialogue between them; it’s like you are right in the sweltering basement of the high school with them, waiting for the end” -Author M.A. Stone

Aria Michaels lives in a small town in Illinois with her loving, patient, husband and her six (yes, SIX) energetic boys. Always the creative type, Aria fed off the encouragement of her mother, and started writing and illustrating her own stories at a very young age. Aria's passion for creation and love of the human spirit followed her to the university level where she graduated with an Associates Degree in Fine Arts, and a Bachelors Degree in Communications, with a minor in psychology.
After years of juggling parenthood with her a career in higher education, the universe finally called Aria back to her original passion...writing. When she isn't glued to her computer, or painting her next masterpiece, Aria can be found playing in the dirt with her kids, snuggling up to a good zombie flick with her husband, or sipping a glass of wine by the fire with friends.
The audible book was gifted to me in exchange for a review.
This book really starts off grabbing the reader. I found the storyteller's voice, Liv, to be compelling. She has a way of dropping in parts of her story without inundating the readers. The set up is great and then when you think everything is going to be honky-dory, it all takes off.
A+ for a unique storyline, set apart from the typical. And also, I loved the pacing of this book. It kept me busy while I worked out, which a huge thank you to the author. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great dystopian/fantasy novel. Although keep in mind that it is really dark at times. Really looking forward to second installment.
Did I read the same book as everyone else did? Because I'm having a hard time believing these reviews are genuine. As an avid reader of all types of books, I really wanted to like this one, but it fell far short of the 5 star review expectations. The next Hunger Games? I think not.
Here's what the author got right: Her cover art looks nice and clean. The storyline itself was good. It had an interesting plot. A solar flare so hot it causes people to burn up on the spot? A mystery involving the government and a top secret project? A heroine hell bent on reuniting with her younger brother, the only family she has left? Yes, please!
Here's where it all went wrong: The writing. The writing was mediocre at best, and the editing was bad enough to take me out of the story nearly every other page. Do you like adverbs? Because this book is riddled with them. Narrowly. Dryly. Nervously. Reflexively. Cautiously. Slowly. Furiously. Desperately. Dramatically. Potentially. Carelessly. Gently. Directly. Organically. Heavily. Languidly. Practically. Broadly. Uncomfortably. Playfully. Willingly. Reluctantly. There is an awful lot of "telling" and very little "showing" going on. Does the author not have faith in her readers to pick up on nonverbal cues, emotions, and body language? And how many times do we need to be told the guy has copper colored eyes? Unless this is going to play into something important later, right now it's just redundant.
There are missing words throughout. Small words that your brain automatically fills in for you, (like he, she, the, and, etc), but they are missing nonetheless. For example, "Never do that again," Zander scowled at me, as cleared flower bed in one bound.
And sometimes there are extra words, that aren't even really words. "Zander and I stepped through, and closed janky the door behind us."
The author also misuses words. "Razor back tank top" when it should be a "racer back tank top." The word "moister" when she means "moisture." Was the use of "J.I. Jane" deliberate? It makes me feel as though the author does not have that much pride in her work to let it out into the world looking so sloppy.
There is also the question of rank. I may not be the smartest when it comes to rank in the military, but I had always thought a Lieutenant ranked above a Sergeant. So why is a secondary character calling Liv, who is supposed to be the one in charge and giving orders, Sergeant? While Liv calls her Lieutenant?
There are consistency issues as well. Why, if they've gone on and on about how hot everything is to the touch, especially metal, are characters creeping through the high school with their backs pressed against the metal lockers? And why, if it's so dark in the high school basement where they're hiding out that they can't see anything, can they still magically see each others' facial expressions?
There is a question regarding song lyrics. In one scene, there are 3 or 4 lyrics to a well known song used. I'm just wondering if the author is aware, (or cares), that in order to use song lyrics in a work of fiction, she has to gain permission AND pay for them? Same goes for her book trailer. I worry about the legal ramifications of using a copyrighted song and screenshots from a copyrighted video game for the purpose of selling her product. Neither the songs nor the video game fall under the guidelines of fair use.
This book was hailed as having a lot of action and drama, maybe even some scary bits. I didn't come across any of that, and I was disappointed. There was nothing about these characters to make me care about any of them, except the little brother, and he was in it for a mere 5 seconds.
What I did find were quite a few F-bombs. For a book categorized as YA, the F-bomb being dropped liberally throughout was off-putting. Do teenagers really talk like that? Sure. Are there other YA authors that feature the F-word? Of course. Sarah Dessen. John Green. But their books are also considered literary works. This is no literary work.
In conclusion, I give this book 2 stars. One because I liked the premise, and the other because I forced myself to finish it and not walk away after two chapters. My advice to the author is to hire a professional editor next time. And if she did use one for this book, to demand a refund and find someone else.
The book is fast paced and a real page turner. The characters are excellent and likable. I would definitely recommend the book for all age groups. The concept is a nice change from other apocolypse styles you'll find, and I think it really lends itself to the story and the characters. The author does a nice job telling the story and maintaining the pov. The story is fun to read and exciting, with plenty of drama action and romance for anyone. Must read !
This book is amazing!!! The story that Aria Michaels created just wraps you up and does not let you go! It keeps you on edge wondering what's gonna happen next.......I can't wait to see what is in store for Liv and everyone else!
I'd heard a lot about this book before I'd even looked into it properly, so when Killshot fell into my lap, I was more than excited. Turns out I had good reason to be.
Aria Michaels writes this novel with such detail and such intelligence that, at times, it forces you to take a pause for breath and just appreciate the intricacy of the story being told. The world she creates is a mass of noise, colours, emotion and vivid imagery. The protagonist, Liv, is a true force to be reckoned with and no matter what is thrown at her, even when the outcome isn't what anyone wants, you have no doubts in your mind that she's going to run into the problem, rather than away from it. Exactly the kind of heroine I adore!
With supporting characters such as Zander, Jake and Riley (to name a few) helping to bring the adventure to the forefront of your mind, you can't help but fall in love with each and every one of them - all for entirely different reasons.
There are twists and turns at every corner and I could bet my stripy left sock on the fact that no one, not even those most well read of readers, will be able to predict what is about to happen during this adventure.
A few of my favourite non-spoiler quotes are below;
"All at once, the sky began wavering like hot asphalt on a summer day and softened to a milky white glow. All trace of the massive primary flare began to melt away. The colors moved organically, like a school of fish weaving around obstacles. Bursts of soft orange slid languidly through the buttery yellows, before spattering and spreading like huge raindrops."
"After what seemed like hours, the colors muted and slowly melted together. The heavenly artist had grown tired of his work and had seen fit to rinse it all away."
"Real life was not like in the movies; things didn't just magically work out for the best."
"As we turned our back on fire and headed east, I found myself hoping that white picket fence would to ash, too. Its existence in this world seemed like a sick joke."
"You only lose control when you choose to give it up. Regret, fear, pain? They are nothing more than vicious parasites, do you hear me? Parasites cannot survive without a host. As long as you stay strong and you continue to fight, those things will never have power over you."
So for me, this is a winner! If you haven't already got a copy, go get one right this second. You won't regret it.
Life hasn't been easy for Liv Larson. Both her parents died and she is separated from her younger brother, Beans, when they are sent to different foster homes.
Liv's old life is over. Once a promising athlete she abandons it, burying it under her grief. Her outlet is art and her friendship with her soul sister, BFF, Riley. Her dream is to graduate high school and reunite with her brother Beans.
A once in a life-time event, turns into a nightmare where classmates are incinerated, a virus is let loose, and the world stops working. Teamed with a rag-tag group of friends, semi-strangers, and a love interest, Liv sets out to get answers and find her brother.
This is a compelling story, a real page turner. It's filled with likeable characters, action, surprises, and government conspiracies.
I hate doing this, but it has to be said: there are a number of typos in this work and I found that distracting from the overall quality of the work. This is a really good book and will appeal to YA/Dystopian readers and also, those that like mystery with strong female characters.
I look forward to the next one to see where Liv and her team's future takes them.
Killshot is Powerful, Energizing, and will Blow your mind..
Aria Michaels has the ability to suck the reader in and take them on the journey with the kids in the book, making you feel everything they are on this journey..
I was totally not prepared for what I thought this would be. After reading the first book Before the sky fell, I was thinking that this would be a continuation of an older sister trying to put her life in order and get her brother back from Foster Care. How wrong I was, but in a good way. Yes Olivia (Liv) still wants to get her brother back, but what happens at a high school rooftop get together to witness the rare Icarus Solar Flare, will forever change EVERYTHING!!!
A bunch of teenagers, a night full of a promise of fun, will come together and merge with what only one could call The End of Time, as we know it.
Some will survive....Some will not...But the Others...can only be call Demons...
Olivia, Zander, Rylie, Machia, Jake and other teenagers will come together to fight to live no matter what...but what they see when they venture outside will have you even thinking, Is this The End..
So what will happen to these teens... well I am not going to spoil it...But I sure as Hell can not wait for the next book...
*UPDATE (9/30/2015): Since posting my original review Aria contacted me and asked if I wanted to help her with proof reading/editing Killshot, of course I agreed because I love being able to help authors out when possible. Now that the editing errors have be eliminated I have raised my rating to 5/5 stars!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
From the moment I read the synopsis I knew Killshot was a book that I needed to read. Killshot focuses on Olivia "Liv" Larson, an average teenage girl that has suffered from more than her fair share of loss. After her parents untimely demise Liv and her brother Luke aka Beans are split up by the foster system, but Liv promises that they will be reunited "Even if the sky is falling," foreshadowing? I think so!
Not only does Liv's best friend Riley guilt her into attending a Solar flare party but she sets her up a date for the party, which is not part of Liv's plan. Enter Zander, the boy with those amazing cooper eyes. The moment that Zander and Liv met was one that I will probably compare every girls meets boy moment in the books I read to because it was not the cliche you seem in most book but moment that will make you laugh. Even though Liv is interest by Zander she keeps pushing her interest in him aside because she has a promise to keep and she thinks that he will be a distraction.
Liv and Zander make their way to the Solar Flare party, that is made up of Riley, her boyfriend and a small group of other classmates. The solar flare, Icarus, ends up being a much bigger solar storm than originally thought. The ragtag group of classmates is forced to seek shelter in the schools weight room from the increasingly high heats that are left behind the the aftermath of Icarus. After realizing that rescue is not coming Liv and her group of classmates realize that they will have to take fate into their own hands and figure out what is going on and find their own way to survive in the world left behind by Icarus.
All in all Killshot was an amazing read that seemed kind of slow at first but once I hit the 50% mark it seemed as though the book was over before I knew it. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves a good YA dystopian novel. The only reason this book was not a 5/5 for me was because it had some small issues in the editing department, that would have be so easy to accidentally overlook while editing. This editing issues are nothing major and very rarely does it take you out of the story, they also could easily be fixed with a quick read through and update to the kindle edition.
I honestly can hardly wait until the author, Aria Micheals, releases the next book in this series because I am dying to know more about Liv, Zander and all the other wonderful characters in this book as well as life after Icarus.
Wow .... I'm experiencing that speechless, blown away state that a truly amazing book leaves you in. The main characters of this book are all teenagers trying to survive the aftermath of an apocalypse. However at no point did this feel like a young adult book , just a very good one.
The author very cleverly chose realistic backgrounds for the characters so that the challenges they encounter and their 'adventures' are generally believable. The twists and turns of the plot, the mystery and suspense and the quality of writing had me gripped until the end.
As with stories of this genre the group suffer heartache and loses, more than one part of this story tore at my heart. Micah's secret, boy that one knocked me sideways. Bits of information, warnings and overheard conversations all tie together to deepen the mystery and add to the suspense, whilst also giving us a clue as to what might be the truth of the catastrophe.
Whilst Liv (Olivia) is the main character, since the book is written from her POV, the whole group of teenagers are important throughout the book and play their part in finding their way to salvation.
The story concludes in book 2, this one thankfully doesn't end on a biting your nails cliffhanger, but rather at a natural break point. I can't wait to read book 2!
Arc provided on behalf of The Wandering Bookaholic in exchange of an honest review
When I started this book, I thought it would be a fight for survival in a completely different way. At first when I realised it was heading in a different direction, I wasn't sure about it. But it turned out pretty good......But now I want more
‘Killshot’ is the amazing debut by Aria Michaels, and let me tell you it is one hell of debut at that. This book will have you engrossed and on the edge of your seat throughout its entirety. I was hooked, and fell in love with the story as well as the characters.
I don’t want to go in to too much detail on this book as there are so many aspects and layers to it that I don’t want to ruin it for everyone. But, what I will say is the synopsis for this book really does not do this book justice. It may not sound like your cup of tea, but believe me...You Will NOT be disappointed.
Olivia ‘Liv’ Larson has got to be one of the strongest characters I have come across in a while. She is strong, brave and takes charge when the shit hits the fan. Everyone looks to her for guidance and she takes it in her stride, all the while trying not to show just how terrified she is.
“Listen to me, Liv Larson. You are, by far, the most stubborn, exhausting girl I have ever met in my life. You insist on doing everything the hard way, you constantly put yourself in danger, and you have absolutely no sense of self-preservation....but you are also the smartest, strongest, most brave person I have ever known. You have this energy about you that feeds the courage of those around you. I know you have your doubts, but the rest of us do not share your opinion. Like it or not, you are a natural born leader...and we would follow you over a cliff.” ~ Zander
Zander, is hot. Really hot, and the moment Liv meets his eyes, there is an inexplicable pull towards him, one which she doesn’t understand nor like.
“Despite my fervent resistance, this boy I had known for less than twenty-four hours, had managed to awaken a part of me I had forgotten existed. From the moment Zander walked into the diner, I had found myself inexplicably, and undeniably, drawn to him. I could not explain it, but there was something about him, and I had no idea what that something was, just that it made sense. The connection, however confounding, felt right to me, and no matter how hard I tried to deny it, I knew I could not walk away from it—from him.” ~ Liv
Aria does an amazing job at helping the reader understand everything that is happening and why. You can tell that it’s very well researched and you really get a feel and picture of what everything much look like.
And, although this is a Dystopian genre novel, full of suspense, and anguish, there’s also a bit of romance...Now you really can’t go wrong with that.
The characters are very well developed and very loveable. Although you have the two main characters, Liv and Zander, the secondary characters play just as an important role. They each bring a specific attribute to the group in the fight to survive. The way they stick together and deal with what’s happening is commendable and inspiring.
The emotions are very much believable and relatable to the situation and are dealt with a kind of maturity you don’t expect to see that of people at that age.
I was intrigued to learn about the solar flare itself and why it ended in the way it did. It’s gripping but very believable at the same time. It’s the type of situation that you can actually see happening in real life.
This is a story of survival, friendship and the road to salvation. With dangers along the way and betrayal among the people you believe are there to help, Liv, Zander and the rest of the group must stick together if they want to survive.
I loved the writing. I loved the plot, and I loved the characters.
Bravo Ms. Michaels. Bravo, for this truly remarkable book. I look forward to the next book and every other book you release in the future.
I very highly recommend this book, and will not be disappointed at all.
Received ARC in exchange for honest review OH BABY! This is a goodie! For all you sci-fi apocalyptic lovers, you will love this little bundle of awesome sauce.
Okay envision that the movies The Breakfast Club(yes that 80’s classic, don’t laugh), Armageddon (I know you cried at that one don’t lie) and Resident Evil( nightmare fuel) all came together and had some crazy hybrid book child and you will have Killshot, by Aria Michaels.
Killshot revolves around a group of high school semi-friends. I say semi because not everyone in the group actually likes each other but they do all know one another. This rag-tag group of misfits mainly consists of
Olivia or Liv our lady lead and resident bad-ass, tomboy leader; Riley, Liv’s perpetually optimistic adopted sister; Micah, Riley’s beau; Zander, Micah’s oh so swoon-worthy cousin and main male lead; Jake, the nerdy, highly intelligent and loyal sidekick; Falisha, the kick-your-butt/undercover Einstein/cheerleader.
This not-so-merry band of high schoolers gather together to view the once in a lifetime celestial occurrence called Icarus. A Solar Flare headed straight for earth. But they soon realize that what they thought would be a sight they would never forget turns into a devastation they may never escape.
Gather Sci-Fi fanatics cause this is where it gets good! Icarus causes a solar reaction that literally turns the atmosphere into a burning scorching sun, complete with fire and brimstone. Pavement and sidewalks are melting, temperatures are rising, buildings, trees and people are burning on the spot and the air is getting harder and harder to breathe. When our group gets trapped inside their high school it’s up to them to hone their abilities and work as one to survive the disaster.
BUT WAIT!!! There is more…Icarus didn’t just set off a catalyst of natural destruction, oh no…there is something else lurking in the air. A virus. One capable of changing the genetic make-up of the person infected seasaw-ing between crazed monster to heightened superhero.
With members of the group exposed, desperately seeking their loved ones and more of the events leading to Icarus unraveling, the group is taken further down the rabbit hole to hidden truths, conspiracy theories, unfathomable lies and destined connections.
Did I hook you yet?!? Well let me make it easy. This book will have you completely engrossed and on the edge of your seat. I could not put it down. Just when you think you have it all figured out Michaels throws in another twist to screw with your brain, in a good way of course ;) The characters are well developed and likable if not lovable. Every character is an important piece of the puzzle and necessary member of the group with each person providing a strength that will allow the group to survive. I love how the friendships and bonds start to form over the course of the story and how each character matured at a convincing pace. The emotions emanating from the story are believable and relatable, from desperation to determination, sadness to love, and pity to hope. And of course the plot is just awesome. There are thrills, chills, monsters and heroes. The story is inventive and well written. Despite the multitude of characters the dialogue was very clean and easy to follow and the ending will leave you itching for more. I highly recommend this book, Aria Michaels does a fabulous job with her debut and I can’t wait to read the next book!!!
This book took me by surprise, in how much I loved it!! It is over 13 hours long but it wasn't long enough!!
You are pretty much pulled into the book from the first page and it's non stop from then on. It's not just that there is action, there's plenty of that, it's that the story is intricate and so believable that it's quiet scary. You could imagine a solar flare happening and the intense heat that it causes. You could imagine the devastation that it causes on a global scale, you can imagine the fear of the kids that are stuck in the school. You can vividly imagine this because the author puts so much into her tale and describes it so well that it's like you are a part of the story.
Now it's not just the solar flare that causes the devastation. The author puts a whole knew and unique spin to her story that was, again, believable. She did her research into diseases!! I loved that little spin. ;)
As well as the amazing plot, we have equally, if not more, amazing characters. Liv is a shell of her former self. Both her parents are dead and she was separated from her little brother. She vowed to get him back when she was 18 and that plays a big part of the book. Her determination and grit was admiral. Liv was definitely a worthy heroine. She knew her mind and did what was needed. She was level headed and brave too, and I loved that about her.
This book will chew you up and spit you out. It was such a fast paced and engrossing read that I found myself not wanting to take out the earplugs because I had to see what happened next. It is the type of book that once you start, you will not want to finish!! It's everything you could want in a great post apocalyptic read and one I hope gets more attention, because it's that good. Aria Michaels has created a harsh and horrible world, but one you will dive into. There is so much going on in every page that it will blow your mind.
Anyway, I absolutely loved this page turner and can not wait for the next one. From it's ragtag group of lovable characters, to it's gripping and intriguing plot, this is a must read.
The audio of this was fan-friggin-tastic. I loved Rhiannon Angell and the voice she gave to each character. She really knew her characters and what inflictions to give each. She breathed life into the story and made it play out like a movie in my head. I had no problem distinguishing each character, which is always a plus!!
*I received this for review from the narrator for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own!*
I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion. Seventeen Year old Liv Larson lost both her parents just a few short months ago. Liv and her little brother were put into foster homes. And now all Liv’s goals are to finish high school find her little brother and get out of the small town in which she lives. Her life has not been quite as bad as she thought it was going to be as she was put into a home with good foster parents and she also gained a sister, Riley in her new home.
Liv is just trying to get through the next few months until she graduates and she can hit the road. She just wants spend all her time alone in her room but on the night that the solar flare, Icarus is supposed to happen Riley talks her into to going with her and their classmates to watch for Icarus. But the one thing they never expected was for Icarus to hit earth but it did and caused a major catastrophe.
When they sort of figured out what was going on they all went to the basement and stayed there for a while. But some of their classmates couldn’t take it anymore and decided they were leaving. They didn’t trust Liv and what she was telling them. All she was doing was trying to keep them safe and alive. So the group split up and one group left but Liv and her friends stayed until they thought it was safe or as safe as it was going to ever be and then they left as well. They didn’t have any choice they were running out of supplies plus they needed medical help.
Liv met Zander at the Icarus party and Icarus wasn’t the only thing that was getting hot. She knows she was set up by her sister Riley and her boyfriend Micah. Liv and Zander hit it off right away. Each of them found out real quick like that you could fall in love with someone real quick especially when the world has been destroyed along with just about everyone in it.
Killshot is filled with a lot of sadness and happiness as well. When you pick up your copy of Killshot I suggest that you have a box of tissue close by because you are going to need them. All of the main characters are great people with great big hearts. I don’t know if I could actually tell which one has the biggest heart. They all are the most caring, strongest and loveable people you will ever meet and their story is one of the best ever written. Killshot will stay with long after you have laid it down. I don’t think I have ever read anything quite like Killshot before. I can’t wait to read the next book and see where Liv, Zander, Riley and the rest of the characters take us on their journey.
I completely loved this book. If you're a fan of The Hunger Games or Divergent you need to grab Killshot.
Olivia, Liv, is an orphan. Separated from her brother Lucas (Beans) by foster workers she is getting though life and high school as quickly as possible until she is 18 and old enough to get Beans and look after him herself. Persuaded by her friend Riley she goes to watch a forecasted Solar Flare from her high school roof, only to find herself banded with a group of high school students as the sky falls in.
Aria writes brilliantly, you really get a feel for these high school kids without the book or story feeling ‘teenage’. Liv is a really strong character that you immediately bond with, as is Zander, he’s to young for me to mention how hot he is (totally hot - like Zac Efron hot!!) which is a good job as they are affected by the solar flare and to be honest are going to need to draw on any strength they have.
**“Listen to me, Liv Larson. Like it or not, you are a natural born leader...and we would follow you over a cliff.”**
As information becomes sketchy and supplies run low they decide that they need to venture out and assess the situation, only they could never have dreamed what they would find.
The descriptions are fabulous and you feel every trauma that they suffer. Liv, Zander and Riley have to watch friends go through hellish situations (poor Micah - who was so brave, Mrs Proud and Johnnie, my heart so felt for Johnnie). There are also several situations were you really can believe that in life and death situations like this humans will behave both amazingly, and disgracefully …
If this book is your genre, or even if you are looking for something a bit different - you need to grab this book - you will not be disappointed.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book. The narrator's voice was pleasant and sounded suitably teenager-y (not that teenage females sound much different than adult females.) The character voices mostly sounded pretty similar to me (there were two or three exceptions to this), but they were almost always accompanied by character tags, so that didn't really matter because I still always knew who was speaking, and I'd prefer similar voices with character tags to voices that just sound like caricatures. I did occasionally find myself tuning out the story, quite likely because of the narrator's voice (and my own failings as a human being). Her narration never felt excessively dramatic (which is a good thing) so I would sometimes just kind of forget to pay attention for a minute.
As far as the book goes, the descriptions were on point. I've been craving a greasy small-town diner burger since the beginning of the story and that's not something that exists in Germany (Germany has some amazing food, but good hamburgers are not on that list). Beyond that little annoyance, I could easily see myself facing the new world with Liv and the gang. I was right there with them and I don't usually feel that invested when listening to audiobooks.
The one thing I didn't understand is why everyone expected Liv to know what to do. I understand why she initially took charge, that was made very clear and makes perfect sense, but it doesn't explain why everyone else present seemed to expect her to have all the answers, and they really seemed to. This was a recurring question for me.
Overall I give Killshot 4.6 out of 5 stars because it totally gripped me.
I've been wanting to read this book since it first popped up in my Facebook feed. The premise captivated me and I couldn't wait to knuckle down with a copy and get stuck in. So when I won a copy in a giveaway, I was beyond excited.
What can I say? It absolutely didn't disappoint.
From the outset, the reader is drawn into the story. The main protagonist, Liv, is feisty, courageous and quick witted and tells the story of what essentially feels like the end of the world with panache.
This book was a page turner right from the start. Every night I was reading well past the time I ought to have been snoozing, desperate to find out what happens and what the devil was going on.
What seems to start out as a simple post apocalyptic survival story, with a love story weaved through it, eventually emerges as something much deeper and much more sinister, and I am so excited to find out what happens on the next part of this epic journey.
There are twists and turns throughout, with intelligent use of science fact and fiction and Aria weaves them skilfully into what is, essentially, a story about the human spirit and will to survive, against almost insurmountable odds.
This author is definitely one to watch in the dystopian author category. (Incidentally, my favourite book genre.) I look forward to more from her with great anticipation.
My only complaint, and it is a minor one when placed against the strength of the story and the quality of the writing, was that the book could have done with a simple line edit to fix typos missed by the author. But, as an editor, I can say that it didn't detract from the brilliance of the writing at all.
Wow, Killshot had me hooked from the very beginning. Liv is a young 17 year old orphaned girl, struggling to make it through high school. Wanting nothing more than to get away from her small town and everyone in it. Being separated from her younger brother was killing her, and she would stop at nothing to be reunited with him. Doing everything in her power to keep the promise she made to him; not even if the sky is falling. Who would have known that those words would truly mean so much in this story, in Liv's future. The one night of comet gazing turned her life and those around her upside down. That night, Liv also found an undeniable connection with Zander, her best friend/foster sister Riley's boyfriend's cousin. Who would have thought that their connection would turn out to be so much more. As Liv, Zander and friends fight for survival, they come across so many threats and obstacles; losing loved ones but also gaining allies. So much is revealed in their journey as they encounter different people and creatures.
I often found myself crying, feeling the pain, loss, defeat, and the unknown that these teenagers had to deal with at such a young age. I loved watching Liv, Zander, Riley, Jake, and Falisha evolve throughout the story. Growing stronger, protecting one another, becoming family and never giving up. I can not wait for the next book to come out so we can see what these brave young souls do and end up. Great job Aria Michaels!
I willl review this uber soon, just need to figure out the best way to tell you how amazeballs this book is:) EDIT= see following for review
I never have really came up with words I felt accurately portrayed the full extent of enjoyment one can derive from reading Killshot. It's not only gripping, poignant and witty, but also a bit emotional and possibly suspenseful in a sense- you just can't wait to read the next page! Liv is a great example of a teen struggling not only with coming into adulthood, but also a slew of adverse circumstances. She does what she must to keep a promise she makes, something that's very important in the Larson family. I also totally floved Riley and Zander, and was rather freakishly drawn to the oddballs in the gang. Of course you could go read some boring zombie book for the upteenth time, but you'd be much happier if you checked out this rollicking read. An apocfic for the ages, you had better go grab yourself a copy today, just in case. 5 stars duh
Killshot is an addictive storyline with sensational character development. I felt like I really got to know this group of rebels, and I can’t wait for the series to continue to reveal it’s secrets! I loved learning about not only the detailed appearance of the characters, but their quirks and each of their specialized contributions to the team.
All technical aspects are well researched and developed to help the reader understand why things are happening instead of just telling us that they are – all while maintaining the suspense; and who doesn’t love a little romantic twist to swoon over?!
I was on the edge of my seat to learn about the details of the solar flare event and how it was going to affect the characters, as Aria effectively offers the perfect amount of information at just the appropriate turn in the story. A completely fluid and comprehensive read! Loved her debeut novel, and I am beyond excited for the next one!!
This is not my usual genre. I heard good things, I tried it out. Within the first three chapters I was hooked. It's easy to relate with the characters as well as fall in love with them.
What starts out as an innocent night out watching a comet with Liv's best friend and a few acquaintances from school turns into more. Much more. No one was prepared for the world to end. Except for maybe Liv whose late father insisted on her learning more than just the camping basics.
Can Liv's slightly advanced survival knowledge help her save herself and the rag tag group of survivors she's with from the new conditions of the world? Probably. But add the threat of the government and an alien virus to the mix and their future looks a little grim. Travel with Liv and her group as they discover what they're capable of and what the Killshot really is.
I have to say that the story was FANTASTIC. I gave the book 2 stars based on the fact that there was a LOT of errors. I wondered if the author even hired an editor. I usually don't take more than a few days tops to read a book I am enjoying. The errors were very distracting and annoying. After so long I wouldn't be able to take it anymore and needed a break, so I took a long time to finish. There were words missing, the wrong form of words, and random words that didn't make sense. It wasn't just a couple of times, sometimes it was multiple errors on 1 page. I would have given this book 5 stars if it was not for that. The story was very unique and interesting. I did feel like the story was drawn out in some spots and rushed towards the end.
Wow this book is good. I never write reviews for books but I just had to for this one. From the time you pick it up to the last page you feel for these characters and the struggles they face. Every one always says "I couldn't put it down" and I have always taken that with a grain of salt. Quite literally I never put this book down. I picked it up yesterday and only stoped to sleep. I would recommend that you have a free weekend because this book will dig its nails into you and won't let you go.
Killshot is the action-packed, post-apocalyptic thrill ride you’ve been searching for. It’s gritty, violent, and full of enough gore and suspense to keep you on your toes. A heart-stopping journey into a dangerous new world that takes on dystopian without going zombie, Killshot blends science fiction with natural disaster and astronomically bad luck.
If you love YA dystopia with strong female leads, you will really love Killshot. The world is vivid, the characters dynamic, the stakes high - you will root for Liv and her team of misfits all the way through. I've read the comparisons to Hunger Games and Divergent and totally agree with those reviewers. This book also reminded me of John Marsden's Tomorrow Series, which was my introduction to this wonderful genre. Can't wait for the next installment!
Wow! This book definitely exceeded my expectations. I expected this to be poorly written, jump around, repetitive and go no where, but that is not at all what happened! I seriously could not put it down. I was either doing school work or reading Killshot. I can not WAIT until Aria's next book :D
This is one author who knows how to pull the reader in and make them part of the story. I was hooked from the first chapter. I would recommend this to everyone! I hope that the next book in this series is as good as this one. I am anxiously awaiting the release.
What a great read! This book has it all! Great characters that you want to know more about, an amazing plot that keeps you wanting to know what's next all the way through, and it is descriptive enough to help the reader feel like they're there. I am anxiously awaiting Before The Sky Fell.
Amazing read doesn't do Killshot justice. Once I picked up the book I couldn't put it down. You can almost feel the chemistry between the characters. Aria Michaels definitely has a way of writing that sucks you into her story. I’m now impatiently waiting on her next book.
