I loved reading this collection of short stories! Eric Cyr is a wonderful writer who captures the humanity of his characters and brings them to life on the pages. The brokenness, the love, and the beauty in the small, and sometimes painful, moments that occur in their lives, allows the reader to lose oneself and become one with the characters. This book belongs in a permanent spot on the coffee table for you to pick up and re-read whenever you need a some time to dwell in the rich beauty of the written word.
This collection of short stories was an excellent reflection on growing up and living in Minnesota, religion, as well as on the various characters internal struggles as they try to live up to their morals. The characters are well developed and feel complete, even in a short story setting, where there's less room for development. The setting itself often plays as a background character and occasional antagonist for those trying to grow and navigate coming of age and adulthood.
Interesting short stories about well-drawn characters who experience life in its varied forms - mirth, tragedy, wonder, and everything in between.
“The snow that hit the pavement broke apart and melted as soon as it landed, like minuscule worlds erased. But Kyle’s eyes watched the large flakes that settled, unharmed, on the bright green blades of grass.” (134)
