The Paine Protocol: A Cold War Thriller Based on a True Story

Some secrets don’t stay buried.

When five-year-old Mark Paine Fisher lost his father, Captain Robert T. Paine, USAF, in a 1966 plane crash in West Texas, he was told it was a tragedy.

A small aircraft. A training flight. A young father who never came home.

For decades, that was the story.

But grief has a way of leaving clues.

Nearly sixty years later, family silence, missing records, and unanswered questions pull Mark into a Cold War mystery he was never supposed to uncover. What begins as a son’s search for the truth becomes a dangerous journey through classified files, buried government secrets, and the long shadow of a father’s final mission.

Blending fact, fiction, imagination, and suspense, The Paine Protocol is a gripping spy novella based on a true story about father and son, unfinished love, family legacy, and one haunting

What really happened?

Because sometimes the deepest mystery is not only what happened to the father. It is what happened inside the son.

Wow. True story with fiction filling in the blanks. Another case of authority running amok.

This story has so much heart. The bones of the book were really strong and I loved the way the story explored family, untold stories, and the ties that hold people together. There were a few inconsistencies along the way that occasionally pulled me out of the story, but overall they were easy to overlook. A touching, engaging read with a beautiful focus on family.

Fast paced, personal, intriguing. The Paine Protocol artfully combines a real life event, historical setting, with a story that keeps you turning the page. I can hardly wait for the sequel.

The Paine Protocol -

Ehh.... This was an OK read. It was also a short read. And... from a pilot's first lesson through each required "biennial", he/she is almost always tasked with performing and setting up for, a "power off landing" (simulated blown engine). The author's conclusion that just because a plane suffers engine trouble it is therefore going to crash with 'loss of life' expected, is inaccurate and improbable. If the author were to correct this and include a short chapter regarding how the accident was setup to happen while the plane was over dangerous terrain etc., it would be a more palatable scenario for pilots reading the book.

It feels like it was written by AI

I got my copy for free, but the opinion is my own. The writing style feels detached, mostly 3rd person perspective. I liked the context of the historical government cover up of agent Orange and similar issues, but was disappointed in the writing style, even though I acquired the book for free.

The real-life story of truth and sacrifice is established through evidenced discoveries and the legacy of strength and unity continues. An emotional read about the power of family love and support that refuses to break no matter the hardship.

Captivating. My husband was a Veteran from that era and he had his own questions.
