"There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice."
The world didn’t end. Life didn’t stop. That’s the strange part.
For Lila Carter, surviving the aftermath of a devastating summer isn't about grand breakthroughs; it’s about becoming fluent in avoidance. Returning to her Seattle high school after a quiet implosion, she is determined to project total control. Her face is composed, her voice is steady, and her secrets are safely locked away behind therapy room doors. She is a master at appearing completely unchanged.
But internally, the noise has never stopped.
As her mother embraces a terrifyingly stable new normalcy and her former best friends treat her like a ghost in the hallways, Lila finds herself caught in a delicate, painful emotional friction. Hanging in the margins of her fragile recovery are Eli and Caleb—two completely different forces who hold pieces of her past. One promises a dangerous wait, while the other demands a perfection she can no longer perform.
When hidden handwritten truths surface and old wounds are pried open, Lila is forced to confront the defensive architectures she built out of silence. Can she learn to trust the softness of a life she’s terrified to lose, or will the weight of unspoken words break her completely?
Perfect for fans of Gracie Abrams’ emotional lyricism, Lynn Painter, and Nicola Yoon, I Kept Every Word is a heartbreakingly raw, deeply tender contemporary YA novel about trauma, recognition, and the courage it takes to let yourself be seen.

I’ve never read a book that felt so close to me. A protagonist who actually resembles realistically how I look has always been a game changer. I recommend this book to anyone trying to branch out a bit into the romance genre but also the POC protagonist genre.
