Hellraiser: Resurrections - The Deep Gospel #1

The Female Cenobite looked up and saw the Engineer. He thought he was remaking her for his purposes, but she has ideas of her own.

A new era of ecstasy and agony begins here for Hellraiser!

The long-awaited return of Hellraiser to comics is finally upon us, starting with Resurrections , a series of five one-shots setting up the launch of a new Hellraiser ongoing series coming to shelves this winter!

The Female Cenobite was dead. Or close to it...until the Engineer found her. One of his most promising Cenobites—laid low by a human. This would not do. The restoration process would be long and painful—oh so painful. But he would rebuild her stronger than ever before…

But when she rejects the Engineer’s plans for her remaking, she’s cast down into the harrowing the place where the larval stage of Cenobites fight to survive. She’s been here before and made it out alive—and she’ll do it again.

Fans of Hellraiser and Hellraiser II will love the revival of the classic Cenobite as told by writer Tini Howard and artist Jenna Cha, as she embarks on a new path—one that leads to a collision course with her old demonic order.

I really enjoyed this. After the Female Cenobite is killed in Hellraiser 2, the Engineer is set to restore her. She rejects having her throat wound repaired and is subsequently cast out.

'The Deep Gospel' tells the tale of how a Cenobite becomes to be and ultimately finds their name.

I enjoyed Tini Howard's writing and some of Jenna Cha's panelwork was beyond excellent.

Interesting issue from Tini Howard and co. I like the kind of philosophical lesson that transpires about denial of pleasure and pain - very Georges Bataille inspired - and we get some more lore about Cenobites are developed. The art didn’t really work for me though - it was too cartoony for the aesthetic of the story.

Damn good.

This was fantastic! This is a definite hitter. I usually don't like Tini Howard's writing but she put up a masterpiece here. The writing was devilishly elegant and intriguing. The splash pages were great pieces of art. A well put together issue. If this is what's to come, Hellraiser is going to be a hot book!
