It’s hard for me to put into words just how inspiring, incredible, and genuinely unforgettable this book was. (Insert every possible synonym for “amazing” here.) I’m not someone who always writes reviews, and I may be a little biased, but the story Abby tells in this memoir is truly one of a kind.
Maybe I’m even more biased because it amazes me that we’re the same age. While Abby was out serving on the Halifax Fire Department, I was, to be frank, acting a fool and trying to fit in with people who never really cared about me. It’s a surreal realization that we were two girls navigating similar life experiences at the same time, living so close to one another, yet we hadn’t met. We probably drove past each other more times than we’ll ever know. (If you’ve ever been to Halifax, you know there really isn’t much roadway to work with. lol)
This is the story of a young woman who found her way, found herself, and grew into someone incredibly strong, resilient, and inspiring. Through heartbreak, mental health struggles, and the emotional weight of endless 911 calls, Abby shares a powerful story about self-discovery, healing, and finding the strength that was within her all along. She challenges the idea that you need to chase a heroic job or purpose to be “worthy.” In the end, you just need to be happy with yourself, who is in your life, and make an impact, no matter how small it may seem to others.
Abby has never failed to amaze me, and this book only deepened my admiration for her. It’s a 10/10 read; Honestly, it deserves even more than that.
Abby, I am so incredibly proud of you. I love you so much, and I hope everyone gets the chance to read your story. I know this will be a re-read for me.
You don’t have to be a first responder to relate to this book at any capacity. This book is so vulnerable, and comforting! The way Abby describes the healing process is exactly what I’d suggest and tell others. From the beginning of the book, I was pulled in and couldn’t wait to see what more she had to say. I recommend this to anyone who feels like they’re struggling in their own journey. I can’t wait to pass this along to one of my friends that I know just has to read this too.
