About the author

Hope Toler Dougherty holds a Master’s degree in English and taught at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, and York Technical College in Rock Hill, SC. Her early novels are Irish Encounter, Mars…With Venus Rising, and Rescued Hearts. Her Forever Series includes Forever Music, “A Hatteras Surprise,” a novella featured in Candy Cane Wishes and Saltwater Dreams, Forever Home, Advanced Writers and Speakers Association (AWSA)’s 2023 Romance Novel of the Year, and Forever Free, first place in the Faith, Love, & Hope Reader’s Choice Award for 2025.

A chronic community and church volunteer as well as a member of ACFW, NC Writers’ Network, and Neuse River Writers, she shares her belief in God “Who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” in her daily life and stories.

I enjoyed this slow burn romance with a twist when the guy protagonist’s younger sister showed up unexpectedly. It is a good domestic read with deep development in the three main characters. The title is appropriate for all three of them as a healing metaphor.

Hope Toler Dougherty's have won prizes before. With this one, she'll do it again. She's delivered good humor in an intricate but believable plot with delicate but convincing character interactions as the hero and heroine's clashing fears and missteps slowly advance to a solid love relationship. This is paralleled by the excellent learn-as-you-go growth of an older-brother raising a half-sister relationship. In addition, Dougherty's portrayal of the gradual mutual attraction and kisses in the romance relationships seem very accurate and well-researched--one of the best written accounts I've read anywhere. I'm pleased to highly recommend Beach House Rescue.

Who wouldn’t want to escape to the beach?! Tessa needs the escape. Wyatt needs the escape. Tessa’s friend Wren owns a beach house that she wants to renovate, so she sends Tessa, an artist with an eye for design, to the beach house. Wyatt’s friend Peter is contemplating putting a beach house up for sale. He happens to be married to Wren, so he sends Wyatt, who has a broken foot and is taking a leave from his job, to stay in the beach house. Cue awkward meet-cute involving the police.

I loved these characters! Tessa, Wyatt, Wyatt’s sister Skylee, as well as the many characters they meet in the small beach town. I enjoyed reading the characters’ backstories and how they naturally fit into the story. More details come to light throughout; they’re not just thrown at you all at once. Skylee’s and Wyatt’s relationship development was probably my favorite thing about the book. Though it was fun watching Tessa and Wyatt fall for each other, I felt that the brother and sister relationship was exceptionally done.

This is a Christian fiction novel, so you can expect some inspirational themes. I thought it was great that Tessa, Skylee, and Wyatt got involved in volunteering for VBS at the local church. Some tropes you can expect include grumpy-sunshine and of course, forced proximity. After all, they are in the same beach house! This is a clean romance with steamy kisses only. The sensitive themes that are addressed are done in a way that doesn’t give too much detail, but you understand what they are just from the author’s skillful writing.

I highly recommend Beach House Rescue to Christian fiction readers who love books with a small town beach setting and characters who worm their way into your hearts.

An awkward first meeting leads to a friendship fraught with hesitancy and hidden past life events that cause both characters to be cautious and apprehensive in new situations . . .

Tessa Trask is house sitting for her best friend, Wren, and Wren's husband, Peter, at the couple's beach house. When someone enters the home while she is napping and accuses her of breaking and entering into the home, she accuses him of being an unwanted intruder.

After discussing the matter with a local police officer, Alex, and confirming with Peter and Wren that both individuals have permission to be in the home, Tessa and Wyatt try to make the best of an uncomfortable situation.

Wyatt is intense and abrupt; Tessa is creative and impulsive. How could things get any worse for these two misfits?

This story includes a lot of heartache and traumatic past experiences for both characters. However, when they join together to nurture another character to get past her own traumatic events, they find that there is light on the other side of their own troubles.

I enjoyed reading about Tessa's artistic endeavors including her sewing designs and how she creates new items from repurposed linens and home décor. Wyatt is a successful businessman who is also an Army veteran.

The story has a good faith thread along with many new relationships with others in the community who need to experience some kindness and joy in their own lives.

2.5 stars. I liked the concept. I enjoyed Tessa and Wyatt's irritation yet growing admiration for one another. The setting was blissfully summery, loaded with beach visits, leisurely time together, and ice cream, and the characters both had intriguing backstories. But I had a hard time enjoying this book for several reasons.

I loved Tessa and the way she supported Wyatt in his relationship with Skylee. I loved seeing her artistic leanings, and especially some of the fun sewing she did! She had such a sweet personality, and she reminded me of myself a lot of the time--not at all afraid to speak her mind, and very chatty and bubbly. I wish we got to dive a bit deeper into her backstory, though. Why did people think her art was so subpar back home? What about the fire that destroyed her art? There are so many things mentioned that we know are affecting her, but it's not really delved into.

Wyatt was kind of a piece of work, but he had a good heart, and that especially shone through in the way he cared for his sister--even when he was a bit brusque. With the whole foot situation and lawsuit, I get why he had a bad attitude. Although that information was revealed far too late for my liking--I thought he had an injury from the military or something. He grew on me, though.

My biggest issue with this book was Skylee herself. I loved the girl. But the narrative kept referring to her, a fifteen-year-old, as "the young girl." I was bugged. Fifteen-year-olds are in that weird space between kid and adult, but so desperate for independence and to be treated like a "grown-up", so thinking of her that way seemed off. And honestly, Skylee was written as a very stereotypical and obnoxious teen: breaking into tears and running off at the drop of a coin, calling everything "lowkey cool" (I got sick of reading that), and basically having very little depth. I'm probably ultra-sensitive to this since I'm the oldest of five and all my siblings are currently teens, and I co-lead a Bible study that has a lot of teens in it... but yeah, it definitely bothered and annoyed me at points.

Wyatt also drove me crazy with his aversion to Skylee being involved with art. I get it. He was prone to some big reactions due to his childhood. But it so often felt like he was majorly overreacting. I wish he would have just taken some time to process things rationally.

Also, as fun as the premise of them having to stay in the same house is, it felt very inappropriate the second things got romantic between Tessa and Wyatt, especially since their relationship was VERY physical once it got physical. They were basically having a full kissing (and neck-kissing and earlobe-nibbling) session every chance they got for a day or two. Their "romance" felt very based on physical chemistry and desire to kiss, which made it feel shallow. And I just don't think that models healthy boundaries in a Christian relationship. Aside from Skylee's presence, what was to keep them from going farther?

All that said, I still would say it was a fun, beachy contemporary read. The faith content was very light, so I would call it clean more than Christian, but I did enjoy reading it!

BEACH HOUSE RESCUE really turned out to be a wonderful read for me. Secrets are not so easy to hide, what happens if it all comes out? BEACH HOUSE RESCUE is all about two strangers getting thrown in to an awkward situation. They need to figure out how to get along and let go of their past hurts. How can they ever be happy if they can’t let the past go? If you want to go to the beach one more time before summer ends, pick up BEACH HOUSE RESCUE and join Wyatt and Tessa as they try to figure out their lives. Throw in Wyatt’s teenage sister, Skylee, and life at the beach gets very interesting!

I really enjoyed the beach setting. There is a great set of characters and I wish I could read more about the secondary characters as well. I think the pacing in the book is great and gave a good foundation for the story.. I had a great time reading BEACH HOUSE RESCUE. Hope Toler Dougherty pulled me right in and hooked me from the very first page. She is now an auto buy author for me. Her characters feel very real. They aren’t perfect and while they all have flaws they are also very lovable. I now know I will devour everything this awesome author writes and do it all easily with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes.

BEACH HOUSE RESCUE is a sweet novel about letting go of the past and making amends. Of rediscovering what its like to be in love again, friendships and of coming to terms with loss. In a week where I have started four or five books and given each up at between 30% and 50% I read BEACH HOUSE RESCUE straight through because the story is an easy read with engaging characters, a fun plot, and a believable storyline. Hope Toler Dougherty writes snappy dialogue, wonderful friendships, and laugh out loud moments to give the story the perfect balance of humor and “will somebody pass the dang tissues?! Tessa and Wyatt deal with some heavy situations, and several shocking revelations change everything for them. Hang on to your seats, trust me!! BEACH HOUSE RESCUE is my first book by Hope Toler Dougherty and it won’t be my last!

Beach House Rescue is the first book I have read by Hope Toler Dougherty. I look forward to reading more of her works. This book was such a fun beach read.

Starting with a fun meet-cute, two strangers, both given permission to stay in their friends’ beach house, think each other is an intruder and the cops are called.  Tessa and Wyatt do not get off to the best start under the circumstances. I loved watching them trying to co-habitat while both working through their personal issues. Then, when an unexpected knock is at the door, and Skylee, Wyatt’s half-sister, arrives at their door, the dynamics change. Skylee is fifteen and sought out her brother to try and help her out. Wyatt finds himself taking over custody of his sister. Working through being an instant father, Tessa is there to lend some support.

  The character development was great. Tessa is trying to navigate her artistic side and make her dreams a reality. Though Tessa has such a big heart and brings Skylee right under her wing to help her out.  Wyatt has lots of baggage to work through; growing up with an artistic mother who was flighty, he still has a lot to work through and is very judgmental and standoffish towards “artsy” people. We finally got to see the redemption arc, but it was a slow build to this.

This fixed proximity, opposites attract romance was kisses only and, at times, a little bit steamy.   

The faith elements were sprinkled throughout, helping with VBS and attending church and youth group.

This is a really great beach read to disappear into this summer. I immediately loved the setting of the book, it really made me feel just like I was at the beach and in this lovely small town. I could picture everything the author described, from the setting, to the food, to the town and its residents.
I also really loved Tessa's character and how she sees the world through her art. I admired how she took normal, every day items that most people would discard, and made beautiful art out of them. I also really liked Wyatt's niece. She added a lot of fun and dimension to the story and was very well done. It's not often that authors get the teenager vibe right, but this one definitely did.
At first, and honestly for quite a bit of the book, I wasn't really keen on Wyatt. He's a good guy but he kept hyper-focusing on keeping his niece from doing art of any kind. There were times I just wanted to smack some sense into him.
That being said, the author did do a great job on Wyatt's story arc. It was nice seeing him work towards loosening up and changing his view on art. I think his struggles are something anyone of us could relate to in some way. The chemistry between him and Tricia was very well done. Very swoony. And the things that kept them apart made sense, they weren't just made up problems to keep them apart.
Overall if you enjoy a light, summer read, along the lines of a Becky Wade type book, then give this one a try. I think you'll really like it.

A beach house - the perfect place for a summer getaway, unless you end up with an unexpected and unwanted house mate. It's not their fault, but the situation is awkward. They each have a valid reason for staying there. Artsy Tessa Trask and businessman Wyatt Henry are on a collision course from the beginning. Grumpy Wyatt immediately tags Tessa as unreliable because she's an artist. Tessa doesn't like him either, but she's willing to make allowances for the sake of keeping the peace. They will stay as far apart as possible.

As the personalities and motivations of the main characters are revealed, their relationship also changes, especially after Wyatt's fifteen-year-old half-sister unexpectedly shows up on their doorstep. Skylee is looking for a safe haven and a relationship with her brother. Wyatt is nearly overwhelmed, and Tessa steps in as referee, which is great in Wyatt's opinion until he discovers his sister's interest in art. I love how the brother/sister relationship develops. Secondary characters add a lot to the story.

Wren and Pete own a beach house. Wren told Tessa she could stay there and renovate it. Pete told Wyatt he could stay there to recuperate from a broken foot. However, nobody told Tessa and Wyatt that the other would be there. Talk about awkward! To complicate things, Skylee, Wyatt’s teen sister shows up.
Thrown into the role of bachelor dad, Wyatt is out of his element. Tessa is creative and artistic but needs to find her niche. The problem is, Wyatt cannot forget how his artistic mother did not take care of him as he was growing up. And he sees Skylee having an interest in art also. A little friction there… until Tessa and Wyatt start to be interested in eachother.
The setting was beach perfect with sandy walks and shell collecting. The character development was sound, the faith element was subtle but solid.
This was a great summer, beachy read.

Talk about a memorable first meeting! Tessa Trask believes Wyatt Henry is a burglar who's invaded the beach house she's living in for the summer, and he's certain that she's a squatter asleep on his couch! I laughed out loud during these opening scenes, and It didn't take long for this mix-up to turn into an ongoing battle to see who could outlast the other! Tessa and Wyatt were both determined to spend their summer in this beach house!

Author Hope Toler Dougherty's engaging story shows that a loving, supportive family unit isn't always dependent on blood ties. Perseverance, a little humor, and a lot of grace are definitely the keys, but Beach House Rescue has so much more! A beautiful setting, relatable characters, and intriguing circumstances are mixed with a generous amount of faith and forgiveness, flavored with sweet romance, and allowed to simmer until boiling. The result? A swoony, clean, contemporary beach read!

Now that’s a different twist on enemies-to-friends meet-cute.
I love the opening, the shock and surprise, and how both characters were so indignant. I appreciated that they called the sheriff and their friends to sort out who belonged there and who didn’t. And I loved the surprise visitor.
But I felt that the pace of the story was slow. It seemed like a lot of the same dialogue over and over again, (correct me if I’m wrong…) and progress dragged.
I am also an artist and Interior Designer, and loved that the author chose that as Tessa’s career. In some ways, Tessa seemed much like me.
Wyatt, however, was a difficult character for me, holding on to things from his past and letting that shadow his judgment. It did, however, create the conflict in the story.

I reviewed an advanced copy. The thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own after reading.

This novel hooked me in the beginning. The author sets up a great beginning! The police are even called in a hilarious series of events. However, of course it all works out in the end and the two couples involved couples enjoy the haphazard match-making.

I will say I had a few moments of feeling the plot was a little slow. Also, a couple of times I wondered what the author meant by something written.

That said, I thought the characters were excellently driven. It was character driven and we got to see things from both perspectives of the two main characters. I laughed, I cried, and I got angry at a character, but those are all elements I look for in a well-written book.

So yes, while there are just a couple of things I didn't necessarily like, overall I give it 5 stars.

This book is for those that like clean, Christian romance. You'll really enjoy it!

I really enjoyed this book. The main characters, Wyatt and Tessa, got far more than they anticipated with their beach house mix up. Wyatt had a complicated past and before he could open his heart to Tessa, he had to work through some preconceived stereotypes. I thought his internal struggle was realistically written and I enjoyed watching his and Tessa’s relationship develop. I also appreciated Wyatt’s willingness to give his 15 year old stepsister a chance when she showed up at the beach house unannounced. Their relationship added a layer of complexity to the story which made it feel even more believable to me. After all, life is messy and most families have at least a little dysfunctional behavior! I loved how they worked through all these issues. One of the things I have always liked about Hope Dougherty’s books is that her characters’ faith, which is woven throughout, is realistic, not “preachy” or obnoxious. Their faith feels and sounds authentic.

Tessa awakes to a man calling the police on her at the beach house she is staying in. She panics but thru a misunderstanding Tessa and Wyatt have both been offered use of the beach house for a time. She is there to redecorate and update the house. Wyatt is there to recover from his foot injury. Can they agree to stay in the spacious beach house together? He downstairs and she upstairs? Then an unexpected visitor arrives! Can they figure it all out and get their lives straightened out? There might even be a little romance thrown in!

A good story and a good read.

What happens when two people are invited to stay in the same beach house—and neither knows about the other? An awkward introduction, a call to the police, and a summer that becomes unexpectedly complicated ... and romantic.

I’m always looking for a good beach read, and Beach House Rescue didn’t disappoint. The author’s conversational writing style pulled me into the story from page one. I loved the setting, humor, character growth, and themes of faith, family, and forgiveness. This was the perfect book to read while winding down before bed—light, relaxing, and a welcome escape after a busy day.

This is the second novel I have read by this author. I was excited to read this novel because it is set at the beach in North Carolina. The two main characters are Tessa Trask and Wyatt Henry. In chapter eleven, Wyatt’s sister shows up in the plot. She throws a very interesting twist into the story. One lesson you can learn from this novel is that you cannot judge someone by how they compare to someone else because even though they may have some similarities, they will also have some differences. Another lesson is that you should not let your past define you or keep you from the future you want. I definitely recommend this book.

I was drawn to this story immediately. The beautiful book cover. The beach destination. Plans gone awry. I knew this would be a must read for me. It did not disappoint.

Beach House Rescue is a sweet story about a grump, a free-spirit, and an angsty teen unexpectedly sharing a beach home for the summer. All three characters bring along their own unresolved, emotional baggage. The author uses humor and insight to bring to life each character’s vulnerable side and growth as they try to work through their own fears. Beach House Rescue is a great read filled with faith, romance, and a slice of vinegar pie.

Tessa and Wyatt both end up at their friend's beach house. This was not planned. Each of their friends had sent them without consulting each other. After getting off to a rocky start, they ended up coming to a truce and becoming friends through their time together. One evening there was a knock at the door. Wyatt's step sister, Skylee stood on the porch. She had hitchhiked there. She left her Mom due to issues at home. As Tessa, Wyatt and Skylee begin to know each other and forge a routine, secrets begin to come to light. Join this wonderful story of healing and new beginnings.

Beach House Rescue is the first book by Hope Toler Daugherty that I’ve read. It’s a sweet clean romance about a summer vacation home mix up. Sometimes we’re surprised by how God works and we have to stand back and watch.

Tessa Trask and Wyatt Henry both arrive at the beach house not expecting anyone else. Seems they both are friends with the owners, Peter and Wren. Wren gave Tessa permission and Peter gave Wyatt permission.

Tessa and Wyatt are total opposites so this turned out to be a summer to remember and an ending neither saw coming.

I really enjoyed this beach read! The opening line had me instantly hooked and the story is a lot of fun. I loved the surprise visitor and all they brought to the storyline as well as the relationship between Tessa and Wyatt. I loved the deeper elements to the story that brought a great layer to the read without dragging it down. All in all, a perfect summer beach read or a read for when you wish you were at the beach!

This story captured me from the beginning. I didn’t want to put it down. This a wonderful story with very likable characters. Tessa and Wyatt on thrown into a situation neither were expecting to be in - summer roommates. Tessa is free-spirited while Wyatt is very disciplined. But they manage to make their situation work, barely until a surprise visitor arrives. This story had a wonderful setting, the beach, but also shows the characters growth. The story is filled with humor, family, forgiveness and faith.

Not only because I’m a beach lover, Beach House Rescue engaged me quickly due to Dougherty's intriguing plot and complex characters. Tessa and Wyatt clearly do not want to be in the same house, but are both too stubborn to leave. However, as they persevere, an interesting tension develops between these two strangers. Can they find respect and common ground? Pushing aside their distrust becomes more imperative when an unexpected visitor arrives. I enjoyed Beach House Rescue immensely (I just wished I’d been at the beach, too!)

This book was so much fun. Full of lots of romance tropes: forced proximity, insta-dad, grumpy-sunshine, it had you guessing exactly how things would work out at every turn. I especially loved all the artsy parts, but the beach, many trips to the ice cream shop, and kisses made it even sweeter. This is the perfect beach read for this summer.

This has been a perfect summer beach read. From the start, the grumpy-sunshine romance trope grabbed my attention, and I was invested in the characters.

The banter between Tessa and Wyatt as they were forced into time together was fun. Hope Toler Dougherty did a great job of incorporating more serious topics, like overcoming the past and having hope for the future, with a sweet romance set on the beach.

This was such a wonderful summer beach read. I love that Hope Toler Dougherty brings Christian books to life through her writing. Two people starting out as adversaries and learning how to work together and the beach doesn’t hurt either. Throw in all kinds of unexpected roadblocks and see where this goes! Where do Wyatt, Tessa and Skylee end up? You’ll have to read and find out!!

What a fantastic read! I found myself thinking about Tessa and Wyatt’s story while at work counting down the minutes until I could continue with the next chapter! I loved how different they were from each other but yet fit so perfectly together. 100% recommend

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The writing is cohesive, the characters are well developed, and the ending is the best!! It has a little fun, new beginnings, and a lot of romance, all with a Godly theme. It’s a must read!
